After being substituted in the 53rd minute of Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool last Sunday, Rafael Van der Vaart – who also scored the opening goal in the match – has confirmed that he is suffering with a stretched calf. The influential midfielder has stressed that he will do all he can and battle on to prove his fitness ahead of the final game of the season against Birmingham at White Hart Lane.

Connecting with fans through his official Twitter account, the Dutch international made the announcement:

“Stretched my calf a bit last Sunday against Liverpool but will do everything to make the last game of the season!”

Van der Vaart holds a very healthy Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership (27%) and, with his early withdrawal at Anfield, those managers – including 8 of the top 10 FPL – will have been anticipating an announcement. Today’s news will be met with a mixed reception however. While Van der Vaart seemingly has a chance of figuring in Sunday’s game, he could also miss out entirely or have his pitch time cut considerably once again.

Even though he has been considered a doubt since the victory at Anfield, media silence on Van der Vaart’s situation, together with his reputation this season, has seen him climb to fourth in our Captain’s Poll with 10% of the vote. A home clash against a faltering Birmingham offers potential profits and the Dutchman is understandably a leading contender for the armband. Van der Vaart has been in FPL staple for many a Manager this term, fetching a tally of 165 points which includes 13 goals and 9 assists.

For many this final gameweek could prove crucial and, with Van der Vaart holding such a prominent place in a high number squads, his situation over the coming days will need to be monitored carefully – the midfielder’s appearance on Sunday looks likely to have major significance to our fortunes as Fantasy Managers and those of Birmingham City. Check out our Twitter stream for all the latest.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Nani out for me, don't think he'll play. Going to risk it anyway and my main rival doesn't have him so no biggie if he does. Best midfielder at 4.4? Thinking either Guedioula or Scharner?

      Hijacking is not funny.

Happened to me twice this season. Look through my transfer history and you'll see a Drogba > Xisco transfer. A friend in work did that.

The second time was a rather bizarre Nani > Malouda move. I asked him why did he do Malouda and not someone farcical like Xisco and he said he seen me coming back to my desk and Malouda was the nearest to han. Think Nani actually score well that week too.... ah well.

Yeah but in fairness I think I would have kept Drogba for half a season more if he hadn't have taken him out at that time. He was at his peak and was the best player in the game at that stage. When I inevitably took Xisco out I went for Tevez instead and Drogba started playing really cack.

It kind of worked in my favour.

        That sucks.

Worst that happened to me was last season, I was [very luckily] already on my wildcard, and must have been doing some standard tinkering and left my laptop on the transfer page. By the time I came back to the screen, I had the likes of Tal Ben-Haim lording it up in my team.

If I wasn't on my wildcard already, I'd have completely lost the plot. All that actually happened was I lost 0.3/0.4 value, so not the end of the world.

Lucky boy with the wild card but I bet you were still a little peeved losing that value. I would have been.

The work colleague knew how seriously I have taken FPL this season as I am always sciving on this site. I think that's what stopped him from feckin the whole team up but still, what a pr1ck!

Bent > Tevez worth a 4 point hit? Rival is 32 points ahead of me and will probably have both Berbatov and Tevez.

Or is it worth sticking with Bent, captaining Berbatov and hoping Tevez flops?

Was going to bring in Tevez and berbatov , however i think i have found a stronger plan that involves no spending.

Fletcher is the answer , combined with captaining van persie.

Van persie a strong enough captain choice so dont need berbatov or tevez
Fulham will be terrified of bookings as want to get into europe
via fair play award and arsenal need to win.

Fletcher also has a good chance of getting as many points as
    berbatov or tevez this week

Are you serious with "Fletcher also has a good chance of getting as many points as berbatov or tevez this week"?

We're not that bad defensively, and Wolves aren't going to have it easy against us. We both have a lot to play for, and Rovers in particular will be looking to make the game tight since a draw will probably be a good enough result for us.

Tevez is the most logical choice. Playing with motivation for an in-form team versus a team without motivation and dreadful form.

You've lost it if you think Fletcher's the most rational choice.

Disagree here , when you use the word "us" must mean
you support their opponents so are slightly blinkered here.

For people who cant get berbatov or tevez without taking a hit due to high prices , then i think just getting fletcher in and cptaining van persie (if you have him ) makes sense

          Argue against my logic.

How are Rovers going to approach the game? If we draw, we have Wolves below us already, that leaves 3 teams below us all having to win. We're going to crowd the box, the game'll be cagey, and there won't be many goals.

Our defensive record also reads no more than 1 goal conceded per game in the last 6.

Berbatov and Tevez are far stronger choices if you look at raw potential. I wouldn't get both for a heavy hit, but certainly one.

I kind of agree with you Camzy, the only real coefficient Fletcher has is a high workrate, and they staved-off Mr. Workrate himself last week...more or less. What I'm afraid of, is they do not treat ALL Wolves skill players with the same urgency they appeared to have shown the United players last week.

Defo play safe do you really want to turn your 15 point lead into 7 points?
Make your rival spend the points . He will probably spend 8 meaning you have a 23 point lead , people are going overboard on tevez berbatov and it will likely backfire. Spend nothing and get fletcher

    B)rooney-->tevez and silva --->nzogbia or modric = -4pts

I'd rather have Berbs or Tevez.

Im niot saying hes better than berbs or tevez but
if you need to take a hit to get one of those two then
i think it better to take no hit and get fletcher

I agree that Fletcher is a potential big-hitter this week. Doyle out would strengthen his claims.

Whether he'll score more than Tevez or Berbs is entirely a different matter.

I think they're all good choices this week.

Ever since Tevez scored them two goals last night he seems to have overtaken Berbs as the must have striker this GW. Still can't quite understand why? Anybody care to explain.

        Bolton's form: LLLL
Bolton have no incentive for this game.

        Tevez playing for golden boot.
Man City on good form and motivated to hold 3rd place.

Yeah, had that big argument last night. I still stand by the fact that the stats I posted outweigh the impressiveness of Bolton's home form.

There'll always be evidence against choosing a player based on individual form, fixtures, team form, and if there's nothing else, the fact that so and so just transferred him in so he must be no good!

What would you do if you were world number 1 this week? Make several transfers or sit tight? It's like a 5th set tie break in tennis. If you lose, you'll always regret being too aggressive or too passive whichever was your downfall.

Not really - I can't recall Arsenal's last really good home performance ,even the United win was hardly that impressive and lacked intensity. we start off too relaxed then can't up the pace until the last quarter. In highbury, we'd often and mostly be 2 or 3 up after 20 minutes against lower half fodder....mostly.
