After being substituted in the 53rd minute of Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool last Sunday, Rafael Van der Vaart – who also scored the opening goal in the match – has confirmed that he is suffering with a stretched calf. The influential midfielder has stressed that he will do all he can and battle on to prove his fitness ahead of the final game of the season against Birmingham at White Hart Lane.

Connecting with fans through his official Twitter account, the Dutch international made the announcement:

“Stretched my calf a bit last Sunday against Liverpool but will do everything to make the last game of the season!”

Van der Vaart holds a very healthy Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership (27%) and, with his early withdrawal at Anfield, those managers – including 8 of the top 10 FPL – will have been anticipating an announcement. Today’s news will be met with a mixed reception however. While Van der Vaart seemingly has a chance of figuring in Sunday’s game, he could also miss out entirely or have his pitch time cut considerably once again.

Even though he has been considered a doubt since the victory at Anfield, media silence on Van der Vaart’s situation, together with his reputation this season, has seen him climb to fourth in our Captain’s Poll with 10% of the vote. A home clash against a faltering Birmingham offers potential profits and the Dutchman is understandably a leading contender for the armband. Van der Vaart has been in FPL staple for many a Manager this term, fetching a tally of 165 points which includes 13 goals and 9 assists.

For many this final gameweek could prove crucial and, with Van der Vaart holding such a prominent place in a high number squads, his situation over the coming days will need to be monitored carefully – the midfielder’s appearance on Sunday looks likely to have major significance to our fortunes as Fantasy Managers and those of Birmingham City. Check out our Twitter stream for all the latest.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

                Could very well be a good (c) choice since Wigans fave tactic seems to be give it to N'Zogbia. Plus Wigan have to go for the win, personally I think they'll do it but I'm possibly biased.

    2 Free transfers

    A) Rooney -> Berb + Silva -> NZog

    B) Rooney -> Tevez + Silva -> NZog

    C) Rooney -> Tevez + Silva -> NZog + Carroll -> Berb (4 point hit)

    D) Rooney -> Tevez + RVP -> Berbatov

    E) Other

    Leaning towards C but is taking Carroll out for one of berb or tevez for a 4 point hit going to work out?

          James and No Cesc..... James, I think you made at least one hit every game week but four (two other weeks were WC use) (just rough count)-- this may explain why your bench score is so good, .....you transferred out problems and you probably started an incoming strong player every week.

          Have you figured out where you would be if you took far fewer hits- you could score very high.

          I have found hits work only about 15% of the time in a single game week. (But if you can't field 11 or need to reshape over a few weeks, they work much better)

    I'm over 100 points clear in my main leagues, but 29 points behind 1st in another, I am tempted to go for it and do the following but it would mean and 8 point hit.

    Lamps, Sturridge, Odem > Tevez, Berba, Nzogbia

    Rival has none of these players currently, it would be a captain differential too! but would mean starting 37 points behind, assuming he takes no hit. You never know I guess!!! but feel I could be setting myself up for a fail of a last game week, perhaps trying to stay top 6K is a better achievement.

      Berba (c) in a 3-3 = 34
      Tevez 2 goals = 13
      NZog Goal/assist plus Bps 8-10

      It could be done...Go for it nothing to lose

      I'm 100+ ahead, so going for overall rank, trying to get in the top 1000 so taking a 4 point hit

        Were not at all, we have a realistic chance of getting 8th place this weekend if we win and others around us don't, which looking at the fixtures is extremely possible.

        A few youngsters will probably be on the bench but I can guarantee neither will start, only Hurst if Reid is injured but he's been tried and tested before anyway.

        But yeah B. 🙂

    Quick poll guys..

    Option A - Suarez + Odem -> Tevez, Fletcher (4 point hit)
    Option B - Suarez -> Berbatov (No hit)

    Option A is a 4 point hit because I cannot afford Tevez in one transfer.

    Mini-league is very much wrapped up after taking a 300 point lead going into the final games of the season (silly and unbelievable I know). It's because my so called rival bottled it a couple of months ago when I started to pull away and he hasn't done a single thing to his team to pull anything back and ignored it and now paid the ultimate price. Such a real shame to be honest as it went down to the last games of the season last time round between us. Thought he'd at least give it ago this year 🙁

      I would only cover one of those two players with your 25 point lead and get ready for him to maybe surprise you with Bent or Sturridge out for someone who could really damage you- like Berbs or Tevez.

      Have you worked out the money aspect of his possible transfers?
