Now that the 2010/11 Fantasy season is finally over we can start to look back and digest exactly what kind of year it has been. We’ll be bringing you a variety of season review articles and even look ahead to those players jostling for a place in our squads next term.

However, just as I did last year, I’ll be start things off by assessing just how well our Captain’s Poll has fared throughout the season.

Just how difficult has the captaincy conundrum proved this season? How has it compared year on year? Those questions and many other little nuggets of interest follow, as I grab my calculator and make a few sums for you…

We’ll start exactly as we did last year by looking at the breakdown of exactly how the poll topper’s fared on a weekly basis. Extracting gameweek 19, where the weather put pay to our best laid plans, it’s clear that captain selection has been tough…

0-3 points: 12 times
4-7 points: 9 times
8-11-points: 7 times
12 points or more: 9 times

Looking at those numbers alone highlights that the captain’s choice this season has been much more hit and miss – certainly compared to last season. Just under a third of the time (32% to be precise) our leading candidate has walked away with little to show for their efforts. That’s compared to an 11% figure last year.

Cesc Fabregas is perhaps a perfect example of how we have suffered. The Gunners Captain topped our poll just twice all season (at home to West Ham and Newcastle) – he walked away with just three and one points respectively. His three goals compared to 15 scored in roughly the same spell last season, clearly took him out of the equation as a captain choice this term.

The most successful poll topper is, as is often the case, a player who’s been given two cracks of the whip in a double gameweek. Having scored a brace in each of his last three double gameweeks Clint Dempsey is not only deserving of a place the annuls of Fantasy history for his bi-fixture habit, but his 18 points in gameweek 34 makes him the highest scoring vote winner. Carlos Tevez’ hat-trick 17 points at home to West Brom in February comes a close second.

There are plenty of cases of “what might have been” Notably the likes of Dider Drogba’s hat-trick in gameweek one (picking up 17 points) – more than doubling poll winner Frank Lampard’s score of 8 points. There have also been plenty of viable top scores pass us by altogether – the three occasions that Dimitar Berbatov picked up mammoth scores -gameweek 5: 17 points v LIV, gameweek 15: 25 points v BIR & gameweek 24: 29 points v BIR/bpl- he failed to make the top three of the poll; the one time he did (this final gameweek) he collected just 5 points.

The same can be said for Frank Lampard away at Blackpool scoring 18 points – he was not in even in the top three, while poll winner Carlos Tevez returned just 2 points at home to Wigan. When Tevez did come good – scoring 12 and 16 points away at Blackpool and Fulham in gameweek’s 8 and 14 respectively – it fell under the captain poll radar. As did Nani picking up 14 points at home to both West Ham and Spurs in gameweek’s 3 and10.

If we take an average score of all of the captains across the season we get an acceptable, but not staggering figure of 7.19 points per gameweek. Compare that to last season’s average of 10.23 and we’ve another indicator of just how we’ve suffered this term.

Obviously if points scoring on the whole was lower across the board then a 7 point average isn’t as bad as it may initially seem – unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. By simply comparing our last two FPL Champions Jon Reeson and Chris McGurn, scores this season are 88% of what they were last year. We may have scored less points on a whole this season then, but the captain’s poll clearly still hasn’t been as successful this time around.

Here’s some final morsels of poll analysis that may also be of interest:

  • Wayne Rooney ended up having a fair few good weeks this season after his tumultuous start. However, the only time he topped our poll (gameweek 30, Bolton at home) he walked away with just 2 points.
  • Didier Drogba was the most captained player this season with seven top rankings in the poll (first four scores: 13, 9, 6, 10. final three scores: 2, 2, 2). What’s more, all of these came inside Chelsea’s first 13 gameweeks highlighting not only Drogba’s dip in form but just how kindly the early fixtures seemed to be for Chelsea.
  • Carlos Tevez came a close second in that race with five poll victories – five of his times in the spotlight came in the second half of the season.
  • The top three in our poll registered three points or less just twice all season; clearly then there was predominantly (95% of the time) a ‘valid’ captain’s choice picking up points somewhere.
  • Nani was the most consistent captain’s choice. In the five time’s he topped our poll he never failed failed to pick up points for his Fantasy faithful.
  • The second and third choices in the poll quite often scored a notably higher score (3 points or more) than the actual leader. This was the case 11 times. By comparison, the leader beat the second and third choices on nine occasions.
  • However, if you wanted to hit that big score (12 points or more) then based on the top three each week, the leading candidate worked out as three times more likely to bring you success.
  • Marouanne Chamakh’s solo point at home to West Brom in gameweek 6 wins the wooden spoon of the season. With Fabregas and Van Persie injured it was Samir Nasri’s eventual 12 points worth backing in this fixture – he only came seventh in our poll that week.

There is clear evidence that selecting a FPL captain has been far more difficult this season. The days of backing Cristiano Ronaldo each week are long gone and, with heavy-hitters like Fabregas, Rooney, Gerrard, Torres and Lampard often going missing – we’ve had very few safety nets to fall back on.

For me, that’s been a good thing. Having fewer obvious choices has given us Fantasy Managers something to “manage” – a tough decision to make each week that can ultimately shape our gameweek and our seasons.

We can only speculate how next season will go. Van Persie’s consistency at the end of this season suggests that, if he can stay clear of the treatment table, he could make our lives far easier. That’s a big “if” however. Team-mate Fabregas will need to stay on at the Emirates and be given a role that will see him redisocver his scoring touch; again that looks a big ask. Then there’s Luis Suarez who, based on what we’ve seen so, could emerge as an Anfield Fantasy favourite with assists and Bonus Points to compliment a strong goal haul.

What we do know is that our Captain Poll will be there to offer an opinion once more – only time will tell if your votes prove to have more success next season.

Most inconsistent annoying twat to captain -
Carlos Tevez. Never scored big when you expected him to, and always scored big when the armband was on someone else.

I don't think I ever captained him when he got a big haul either. But I did get him first game back after his injury over winter where he scored 16, that week I captained Tevez, who also got 16 so it was all good!

Friday night someone said "Don't get Tevez in, I have him so he'll do rubbish".

My reply "I've got him which means he'll score a hat-trick"

I didn't do too badly captain wise I think, but then I rarely pay attntion to the poll (if I'm stuck for choice), and I rarely vote either.

Perhaps another issue with the captain poll, is the rise in membership to the site? One could argue that the larger the membership, the more likely the vote will be skewed by lesser managers.

It seems harsh and it's not necessarily true, but I thought I'd put it out there.

I usually vote but don't take notice of the results. Then I do that annoying thing where I come on here and ask people who they think.

Which to me isn't all that annoying because you don't always have the player at the top of the poll and you may have reasons you want backed up, or argued against as to why you should select a captain.

Well how would we start it. Lets say we have 10 of us, the lowest rank gets first choice.
Then do we do the picks by category -
Strikers, Midfielders, Defenders, Goalies then repeat until all slots are filled?

No categories. You have to determine who you pick and in what order positions are filled (so long as you end up with the right number of each player (say 2 GKs, 6 DEFs, 6 MIDs and 4 FORs). It's part of the draft strategy!

All depends who they buy this summer. But there's a good chance it could happen.

If they keep Fabs in the team and injury free as well as RVP injury free then it will help their season. They didn't have RVP for 13 full matches this season, plus a bunch of others where he played a bit part.

Although the end of the season got worse and worse, they would have picked up far more points at the beginning of the season had they had him.

Then again, Man City and Liverpool are going to be stronger next season and Chelsea will be spending and hopefully Utd too 😉

So it's going to be tough all round.

Why are same places reporting that Berbatov and Tevez finished on 20 goals for the season when others are saying 21? Dubious goals?

The Dubious Goals Panel removed a goal each a couple of weeks ago. 20 goals is the correct number for each player.

      http://www.premierleague.com/page/Headlines/0,,12306~2361167,00.html

      11) Manchester United's second goal against Sunderland on 26th December 2010 was in fact an own goal (Anton Ferdinand) and has therefore not been credited to Dimitar Berbatov.

      12) Manchester City's third goal against Newcastle United on 26th December 2010 was in fact an own goal (Fabricio Colocinni) and has therefore not been credited to Carlos Tevez.

Interesting. Did the game get updated accordingly or is it that once the GW is closed there is no going back even by dubious goal panel decree.

No doubt i'm about to get posted a link to the rules I haven't bothered reading - but seem to recall there has already been precedent this season for the rule being bent.

I got R Taylor in too...but don't regret it, I wanted Tevez and Berble for Carroll and Odem, and the only way to afford them was shifting Luiz for RT. Decent chance of a cleanie or an assist. Wasn't worth the 8 point hit in the end, but definitely worth the risk.

Sooo unlucky in a way too. He could have had two assists, one Lovenkrands hit the post the other (and more painfully for me) Ameobi had an effort cleared off the line. That would have been 14 points for me had it gone in. 🙁

Been thinking about what my squad will look like for next season, and its looking to be very top-heavy indeed.

Its hard to see any value in the "big name" midfielders, where-as RVP looks "essential", Hernandez and Suarez could bloom into fantasy legends, Tevez if he stays will continue to score and Torres may well be the pick of Chelsea's attackers. I think Silva could be the top scoring midfielder, and could well come in at under 10 m. Bargain ahoy?

I'm going to double (or triple) at the back on good defence. RVP is a definite, one other big player up front. My mid might be dirt cheap though - Ben Arfa, Pennant, Taarabt (maybe) etc.

an attacking mid like scneider will kepp chico on the bench and they will play with rooney alone upfront, if not rooney wnt be worth selection as he will play too deep and chico will play upfront

I think you are mostly spot on. Over the last couple of seasons fantasy football has changed, very few returns to be had from defences now (hence the likes of Baines as pen takers and regular assisters come into their own). The days of the high value midfielder guaranteeing returns also look to have gone.

Personally my GWK 1 front line is likely to be RVP, Suarez and a.n.other. (would love to have a 4th striker spot!)

My main worry with Silva is pitch time with the ineviatable rotation from City. Valencia could well be a decent pick as hopefully his price wont be too different.

silva and suarez will be 2 tricky picks next season.

silva can simply become a winger if mancity signa creative midfielder as they are shopping and he will become too overpriced and subject to rotation.

with the return of gerrard to liverpool a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely with suarez and kuyt on the wings and caroll upfront. that will hurt suarez scoring prospect.

preseason scouting will be essential before picking any of those two players

I think my best captain choice all season was captaining Bale vs Blackburn after he hadn't done anything for a while. There were some much more obvious choices that week but after seeing Bale destroy Salgado the season before, i expected him to do it again, and didn't he just.

Aside from that i generally captained the players the poll results suggested. Made a few other captain gambles that paid off but a lot that didn't.

In some ways I actually hope that AVB has another season at Porto, keeping the majority of his players from this season. If I were him, I'd want to test my side in the Champions League before moving on.

Ideal situation: getting Hiddink in for one season as manager, then allowing him to move to director of football role, with AVB coming in as manager.

That would have been a bit too much as Beckham only played 3 seasons in the PL last decade and was, erm, not very good in either of them. Same scenario with Henry. Terry definitely deserves to be there for me, as he's been great or good almost every season last decade

Still, three seasons of that quality just isn't good enough for making the team of the decade. I think it was incredibly kind to let Ronaldo in there too.

Fletcher won't play. He was average at best against blackpool and he wasn't even playing very well before his illness. If anyone deserves the 3rd midfield spot it's Anderson on current form but i've a sneaky suspicion he's going to play hernandez to try and stretch the Barca back line. Means Rooney will have to have the tactical game of his life though to stay on Busquets.

It's pretty slow on here today, so please indulge me by listening to the story of my season.

Are we sitting comfortably? Yes? Then I shall begin......

I struggled all season to keep up with the leader in my mini league, reducing a 78 point deficit to just 4 points, only to see him pull away again to lead by 88 points in GW32. He was definitely getting the rub of the green, everything he did turned to gold. He always picked the right captain, the right transfer at the right time and I resigned myself to settling for second spot.

However, something changed in GW33. All of a sudden my picks were paying off and I scored a whopping 126 points cutting his lead to around 30 points. I smelt blood as I began to reel him in, finally overtaking him in GW36 to lead by 4 points. I had the momentum, he was on the racks - I was feeling confident that the title and the cash prize would be mine if I could maintain this run.

It turned out that I was not going to have it all my own way. From nowhere the 3rd placed team overturned a 32 point deficit to go top in GW37 by 1 point - the bustard had Lescott and to rub it in he had Hangeland come off the bench for 21 points!!! S**t, now I had 2 teams to worry about as I sat 1 point behind the leader and 3 points above 3rd place!

The last game of the season was truly squeaky bum time as I began to lose players - Odemwingie, VdV, Huth all injured, Baird (suspended), Kolarov (!), Drogba (dropped). The league leader had only three players out. How the hell could I compete with him?

Only one thing for it: Sh*t or Bust! To stand a chance I would have to cover the players I thought he might get in AND get in a decent differential - and that would mean taking points hits. The sly litle git would be watching me in the run up to the transfer deadline and would see how many points I would drop making transfers so I set up a smoke screen. I made one transfer at 11:25am to give hime something to think about. It worked as he emerged from hiding to follow with just the one transfer. I waited, 2 minutes left, 1 minute, 30 seconds...and BOOM I took another 2 transfers leaving him no time to counteract as BANG! the transfer deadline slammed shut.

I had brought in Anderson as my big differential, with Tevez and Berbatov (C) to counter the transfers I thought he would make. With Huth, Baird, Drogba and Kolarov out I knew I would only be able to field 10 players, but In an effort to make my team as different to my rivals as possible, I benched Foster and gave Mignolet the No.1 jersey and left Kuyt on the bench to give Silva a chance.

Sure enough, he had brought Berbatov in and captained him and he was playing Kuyt. As the team news filtered through, no Kolarov as expected but Silva was in. What's this? No Walcott!!! Now it looked like I would be down to just 9 players with an 8 point hit to put me 9 points behind the leader!

At least I had a chance of securing 2nd place. 3rd place (the runaway leader all season up to GW36) really messed up his transfers, taking a 4 point hit but only able to field 7 players!

The games played out and my Anderson pick was really working out well, and Mignolet was performing heroics at West Ham saving everything they chucked at him. Baines solid for a cleanie, but a penalty would be nice! But he had Lescott. Bloody Lescott! He had done the damage last week and now he was turning the screw. And N'Zogbia hurt me again by bagging an assist for my rival. Had to be over for me now. But wait! Fresh from the bench WALCOTT!!!! YEEESSSSSSS 89th minute GET IIINNNNNNNN!!!!!!!

Now it would be interesting. Points are in. Hmmm a lot better than I thought, I'm leading him by 7 points overall taking into account the points hits I made but I need at least 10 to overtake him. Gonna be a long wait now to see what the Bonus Point judges come up with. C'mon! At last! Yes bonus for Anderson, and Baines! what no bonus for Mignolet!? Sh*t! 3 for Lescott! 1 for his Lampard! Are you kidding? C'mon what's his final tally NOOOOOOOO he has shaded it by 3 points! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Ah well, at least I was challenging right until the end, what with my injured/rotated players. Second place is not so shabby. Lets see how other people got on on the scout forums. Hmmm lot of noise about N'Zogbia's assist. Figueroa got it they say. No, they could'nt have got that wrong, surely? Hang on, yes it could be mistaken identity, that would mean my rival could lose 3 points for the assist. OOOOHHHH THAT WOULD MEAN WE WOULD TIE ON POINTS! WHICH WOULD MEAN I WOULD WIN ON LESS TRANSFERS!!! C'MON SHOW ME THE GOAL. F**K IT WAS FIGUEROA! But will FPL rescind the 3 points?

(Long wait until MOTD later that night). YESSS. N'ZOGBIA'S LOST THE ASSIST. WE ARE TIED ON 2201 POINTS. I WIN ON LESS TRANSFERS 59 TO 61. YESS. I AM THE CHAMPION! EAT THAT! YESSSSSSSSSSSSS! FINAL RANK OF 798TH IN THE WORLD!!!! WOOHOOOO!

Anyway, sorry to bore you, but still loving getting one over on my rivals. My missus is not interested, my rival won't talk to me (BOO-HOO!) so I had to share it with someone.

Cheers. Yeah the smokescreen is a good remedy for sneaky little blighters who wait to see you drop points before deadline before making their moves. He fell right into my trap though. This was after he had tried to psyche me out by claiming that all my transfers were obvious and that I followed the pack etc. Hoping for a re-match next season but he is sulking. Oh well.

Cheers guys. Walcott's goal was a god-send. But I can't believe I went for Mignolet over Foster and dropped Kuyt for Silva. Every point proved to be crucial and those decisions were inspired. (We will gloss over the part where I dropped 4 points to bring in Tevez. Ha ha!)

I think a lot of people took a 4 pointer for Tevez, having gone the whole season up to then with only 1 hit I was really lucky to get away with that on the last day.

              I'm feeling left out here.

If I hadn't swapped Walcott for Modric (for a 4 point hit), I'd have won my mini league in near identical circumstances to you.

              Gutted!

Still it provided one of the season's best buggumark moments with Jason Dozell.

I reckon Utd will lose to Barca, so I'm going to feel terrible when United actually beat em'.

    Just like Juve 99'.

You can take Lloris out of your name now. De gea is practically a done deal.

Gotta say from watching the FA yoof cup final that Pogba, Morrison and Keane look like SERIOUS prospects.... 😀

Pogba especially has some ridiculous passing ability.....

Yeah for sure. Just hope Morrison can stay out of jail for longer than 3 minutes. Pogba is a serious athlete and Tunnicliffe looks solid unall.

1 good keeper and thats all they will sign especially if berba stays. a look at the accounts book and it'll explain it all. this talk about money being available to spend is just publicity to keep the fans quiet against the glazers. And eventually the argument will be "never change a winning team"

Depends how you class the best. On importance I would say VDS is far more important to the team than Rooney.

they need to put a rubber stopper in that volcano, they could use michael carrick - a holding midfielder as he's pretty much worthless everywhere else
