Over Sir Alex Fergusonโ€™s 24-year reign, Nemanja Vidic has arguably been his most shrewd and vital capture. Costing ยฃ7 million, Vidic has just secured his second Barclayโ€™s Player of the Year award, featured in his fourth PFA Team of The Year and captained United to the Premier League title.

Every Fantasy Manager will be more than aware of what Vidic offers, with a hefty price tag to match his prominence in the United lineup, each season Fantasy managers are faced with weighing up the advantages of acquiring such an expensive defensive asset.

This season, such investment largely paid off. Despite United lacking the solidity of previous seasons, Vidic still managed to fetch returns that saw him soar in popularity and provide a firm foundation for his Fantasy owners.

The Statistics

At the start of the season Fantasy Managers could pick up Vidic for 7.0, a drop from his starting value of 8.0 in 2009/10. However, rising popularity saw his value climb to 8.1 by the end of the campaign – peaking at 8.2 in February and March.

Despite maintaining a strong backing from Fantasy managers, thereโ€™s no denying that the United defence had some shaky spells throughout. With Vidic present in the side, United kept 13 clean-sheets and 15 overall โ€“ a decent return, but hardly comparable to the heady heights of 2008/09โ€™s 14 consecutive shutouts. Indeed, it wasnโ€™t until gameweeks 17 and 18 that United put together back-to-back clean sheets.

There was also little improvement when it came to Bonus Points. Having gathered 17 Bonus in the 2008/09 season, Vidicโ€™s return dropped to just 7 last season and this level was maintained with just 9 coming his way this term.

Clearly Vidic has somehow struggled to earn recognition amongst Unitedโ€™s wealth of attacking talent. Fortunately however, the United skipper increased his goal threat at set-pieces which helped him earn another very respectable points haul.

Vidic enjoyed his most prolific form in front of goal in United colours, finding the back of the net on 5 occasions in the league. He therefore ended 2010/11 with 148 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points which saw him sit comfortably in fourth overall in the defender rankings. Significantly, Vidic earned 35 more points than team-mate Patrice Evra who started the season priced at 0.5 more than his skipper.

The Prospects

With those statistics in mind, we should perhaps expect a price rise next season. A value of around 7.5 would seem likely.

Fantasy managers will be anticipating Unitedโ€™s clean sheet count to improve slightly, which should balance things out if Vidic fails to match this seasonโ€™s goal tally. Alternative options in the United defence could count against the Serb however. Rio Ferdinandโ€™s fitness will again be called into question and could open the way for Chris Smalling to earn more consistent starts in the back four. The right-back situation is another that will offer Fantasy managers potential โ€“ if either Fabio or Rafael cement a start in this position, they are surely set to offer strong short-term value.

The flipside is that, Evra aside, Vidic will undoubtedly be the consistent starter and performer in the United rearguard – he remains โ€œuntouchableโ€ as those around him come and go. The question will be however, whether his assured presence in our defences justifies a weighty Fantasy fee.

Crowbars bum off end of seat. So hard when the opponents have so much possession.

Well happy with that. Great response and great goal from the flat track bully.

Defending has been sublime except for Evra switching off for the Pedro goal.

Okay, I laid £90 down just in case as I thought Barca looked like they might score more goals the way they were going. But tied in with Pedro FGS (£30) and Barca to win (£20)... it's been a fairly good day!

I think United can win but they have to play a pacey direct open game. They will only have about 35-40% of possession, but so long as they use it well they can win.
Valencia and Park HAVE to attack their fullbacks, if you sit back you'll be overrun.
        Hope United win.

If Park can pin Alves back, and Valencia gets the better of Puyol that might be key. Rooney really has to help to do a job on the midfield trio, and hopefully he won't get frustrated because it's likely he'll be without the ball for a lot of the game.

I thought we had a chance in 2009, this time, not so much. Saw a retweet from a BBC journo yesterday, saying rumours are Fletcher will start, Chico on the bench for a 4-5-1. It then went on to say Owen was on the bench and NOT Berbatov so unless hes got some injury I don't know about, that tweet sounds like complete BS ๐Ÿ™‚

You always have a chance in a one off cup match but I still think Barca have too much for us.

To be fair I'd be suprised if many of you United fans would support Chelsea in similar circumstances.
Anyway I wouldn't worry about what other people are doing today, United don't have much to lose (unless they get humiliated). If you win - happy days, if you lose then you've lost to a side thought of as one of the best ever (prematurely in my opinion).
I'd like United to win and the game not to be ruined by constant diving, surrounding the ref at every decision and that kind of horrible shite that ruined the Barca Real semi 1st leg.

Most bookies have things like that included in their T&C or whatever, and what it's basically saying is that they can do whatever they want to their customers without giving any special reason.

The gambling industry is really a shite one.

Surreal Football on twitter is absolutely brilliant:

"I'd like United to win, not mainly because I support United, but mainly because English Barcelona fans genuinely deserve death".

    And on football blogging elitism:

"The same in-jokes get passed about with strange uniformity. Gareth Bale, how did he win player of the year? What a joke. Overrated; Redknapp, how do the media love him so much? Alan Shearer, now there’s a shit pundit. It’s been said a thousand times before, repeated ad nauseum by people hoping it’ll be enough to get them to join the chosen few. It sets out to mock what it perceives to be the establishment of clueless ex-pros talking wind for the cash. In reality, it’s an incestuous cesspit more stagnant and repulsive than anything on TV"

    Love Love Love it.

The general idea about the 'alternative bloggers' is a sharp one but it doesn't mean they don't make good points every now and then. And I don't really get why Englishmen can't support Barcelona?

              I see.

My view is that you can support whichever team you want, anywhere. It's not like teams have any real ties to their area anymore anyway - and even if they did that would not be incentive enough for me to support a team.

A football team is an abstract product, it's like supporting Nike or Apple to me. Nothing to do with where you're from, merely a way to make the game more exciting for some.

Probably because they reckon the probability of one part of the bet will increase the likeliness of the other.

What I'm trying to say is that if Messi scores Barca are more likely to lift the trophy than if he doesn't, and if they lift the trophy Messi will have been more likely to have scored than if they didn't.

Some bookies create specials for these things, but generally they don't let you combine doubles where the two singles 'interfere' with eachother like that.

it does seem strange though that you can bet on a barca win in 90 and messi anytime, but not barca to lift the trophy and messi anytime... there can't be that much difference

When I tried doing that at PaddyPower they did not allow it. Said those two could not be combined, and I think that is what Nibbsy tried to do.

I'll quote myself from my original post,

"Some bookies create specials for these things, but generally they don’t let you combine doubles where the two singles ‘interfere’ with eachother like that."

They probably just forgot to create a special for that scenario.

For starters, you lost 68 pts in transfers, although I am noone to talk. Too much faith in Drogba early - Kyrgiakos was in your team (not one to talk on that one either). Overall there is not much explanation, your team was just really overall shitty. Nothing to worry about though, captaining was tough this year, and we were forced to rely on average players to bring in the points, no big gun guarantees this year.

                    Wow ... unvarnished truth, there.

You (Rasputin) actually were pretty consistent with the previous year.

I wouldn't call it 'shitty overall' though - unless you're captain hindsight.

For what they're worth, your greasemonkey stats are actually quite good:
                    (c)=239/429 55.7% Bench=197 9.8%

Yep I tried both with PP - to lift trophy and inside 90 mins. Neither would allow a double with Messi to score.

I can't see it under the specials either, but in any case I wanted to do it for my free bet with Boyle Sports. Oh well, I'll just do Barca inside 90.

            Cheers for the help all.

Its like betting barca win first half barca win second half and barca win the game. Obviously if you win the first 2 you will win the third, so nobody will allow you to parlay them. Odds are too overwhelming that when Messi scores, barca wins.

I think Newcastle are turning into Wenger wannabees, this week we've been strongly linked to a load of young Frenchies, Kevin Gameiro, and Jeremy Menez among them and apparently there is a deal done for Yohan Cabaye of Lille. I've heard of him, and he's good on FM, but never seen him play. Is he any good?

Menez is by far the best players of the above list; top quality player although quite injury prone.
Cabaye is allright, but I think all Lille players will have their prices inflated because of their wonderful season. Nothing to get excited with him to be honest

Thanks Bigo. Yeah I've seen Menez for Roma a few times and he looks handy, not really seen much of the other two to be honest. Theres a load of speculation flying about at the moment anyway so I'll believe it when I see it. We definitely need to add a few players though, especially up front.

      Can't see how there's much tension (for me) ... it's really a 'win-win'

United are certainly the underdog - as much as I despise how Barca go about their business, they are undoubted quality. They "should" win. If United play tight and get a bit of the green, very happy day (year).

      I'd rate United @ 15% to win.

Just hoping, really, for a quality game worth replaying over and over ... showing to my kids someday. If Barca score early, it'll be a long, boring day.

They would have been better off at paying the wages of owen and hargreaves instead or larsson and carew and reo corker. They couldve also at least tried to buy yakubu who is way better and cheaper.

More intuitive Garga - not saying they concede many set pieces, but from watching them over the years it seems like of the goals that they do concede, a decent % come from set pieces. May be because of their height. Ill check the stats though, not trying to invent fact, just observation.

This is a copy of a conversation I just had via the live Paddy Power customer service feature if anyone is interested:

I want to ask about the money back offer on the champs lge final please
    Customer
If I cover all Man U wins up to 3-2 and all draws up to 3-3 will I be eligible for the money back if Barca win in 90 minutes or will this be void because I'm almost guaranteeing a no risk bet?
    Agent
Hello, one moment and I will look into this.
    Customer
    Great, thanks
    Agent
David, those markets do qualify for the Money Back Special.

However in relation to the final clause of the conditions - it is open to the interruption of our traders. Therefore I would not be able to comment on that

I'm not risking it, but good luck to those that do.

+1- will probably just take the 10/1 for united to win on penalties.

We should just get 10 of us to place 10 seperate bets and divide the winnings if any. Im in for 100. We can draw something up pretty quickly.

However, you *will* get beat if you touch Ravel's phone.

Never, ever, touch The Morrison's phone. That is all.

    Anyone use betclic?

What's their cash withdrawal process like? Is it straightforward or one of those dodgy ones where you have to send them copies of bank statements and your driving licence etc?

Forget it, I've just done a bit more delving and it is indeed one of those weird foreign ones where you have send fax copies of your ID and bank statements before they'll let you withdraw any money - no thanks.

Makes a lot of sense remembering what arsenal's 433 did to our 4411 with Roon and Hernandez.
