There’s little doubt Charlie Adam was the phenomenon of the Fantasy season gone by. In his debut top-flight campaign, the Blackpool midfielder took the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) by storm, as Ian Holloway’s tactics ensured the Scot was at the hub of everything good about the Seasiders’ play.

Factor in Adam’s set-piece and penalty duties, and here was an anomaly; a cut-price midfielder who could be relied upon for goals, assists and, most eye-catching of all, Bonus Points by the handful. Although Blackpool finally succumbed to the drop, Adam finished the season as second top scorer in FPL with a phenomenal 192 points, picking up the Fantasy points despite his team creeping slowly towards, and ultimately through, the relegation trap door.

The Statistics

Adam made a mockery of his 5.0 starting price as early as gameweek 4, where a 13 point haul in the away win at Newcastle merely hinted at what was to come. Heavy defeats away to Arsenal and Chelsea, however, prompted Fantasy managers to treat him with caution; it wasn’t till gameweek 6 that Adam’s price started to climb.

Home or away, in victory or defeat, Adam picked up the points in equal measure; Holloway’s tactics threw caution to the wind and their playmaker was the main beneficiary. In a season where only three other players picked up more than 30 Bonus Points, Adam was awarded a staggering 45, with his OPTA stats fully indicative of his outstanding all-round involvement.

Subject to bids from Liverpool and Spurs in the January transfer window, Adam’s form definitely dipped; he only picked up 10 Bonus Points since the closure of the transfer window from February onwards but his set-piece and penalty duties balanced this out, as he scored 8 of his 12 goals in the same period.

His best week saw Adam return from a two-match suspension in gameweek 30 and, away to Blackburn, grab both his side’s goals in a 2-2 draw. The resultant award of 3 Bonus Points meant a 15 point haul and rewarded those managers who held onto Adam during the suspension; he had dropped 0.2 in price in the fortnight.

The Prospects

It seems likely that Adam will return to the Premier League this season and the chase for his signature, similar to January, will be between those clubs in the upper echelons. Bearing that in mind, a look at the starting prices of Tottenham’s creative midfielders may offer a hint to his possible price, with somewhere in the region of 7.5 a realistic figure.

A similar Bonus Points return seems unlikely, however, though a playmaker role and guaranteed starts could still see Adam return somewhere in the region of 30-35. His ability from corners and free-kicks suggests he should still get the majority of set-pieces, regardless of where he ends up, though the lack of penalty kick duties will certainly lessen the appeal.

FA proposed the idea of postponing the FIFA President vote.

We stood up, said why. Then 6 other speakers came up from associations such as...

        CYPRUS, CONGO, HAITI, BENIN, CYPRUS

along with an Argentinian Fifa Executive Vice-President all came up, told us we were total c*nts, that the UK media makes up lies all the time, that the FA should wind it's neck in and the UK government has no place in football.

The organisations then voted 172 - 17 to not postpone the election (155 votes would have been needed).

I say credit to the FA for standing up against FIFA. I'd much rather have an FA that risks "humiliation", in order to stand against corruption and and all the other shit that comes with FIFA.

Doing nothing at all would have been disgraceful.

So you think they're acting out of sour grapes? It's surely not so trivial. Clearly the FAs experiences in that WC bid have led them to believe FIFA is rotten. Unless they're just making it all up because they're mad about losing.

FIFA's obviously corrupt, but talk about timing from the FA...speaking up after all that's happened in the last 6 months it's no wonder people think it's sour grapes.

I said this back in Nov after the WC decision and didn't get much agreement then and I don't expect to now. But England were quite happy to play friendlies in Qatar, get Beckham to set up a skills school in T&T, do a vote-swap deal with S Korea and more all in the name of getting votes. I agree with what he's saying, but it's quite a lesson in bad PR and making yourselves look whingey. And the fact that we all know he would have kept his trap shut if England had got the vote really doesn't give them the high moral ground.

For the record, I think some of the reactions the FA have got have been a bit outrageous, but even so they could have helped their case greatly by taking this stance earlier.

The fact that the FA were willing to go along with the corruption and the British government going along with creating a tax haven for FIFA, it's cronies and it's sponsors, shows that we have double standards.
What the FA are doing now is absolutely correct but it should have happened months and they should have put forward their own candidate.

It's actually frightening reading the reports of how much we are hated around the world.

I'd be quite happy enough if we withdrew from FIFA and no one else followed.
The 'real' reason our FA are so full of hot air is that they have a stadium to pay for and rely so much on FIFA sponsored tournaments and friendlies to generate income.

Nah, modric. Wesley plays in rooneys position in this 4411, modric would be a like for like replacement for where scholes and Giggs played next to carrick. I'd like a return to 433 in which case sneidjer would be amazing but Fergie seems to love the roonandez partnership.

The guy is one of the best midfielders in world football and i think you could play him anywhere barring centre half but i guess he'd be best positioned in an advanced midfield role. Even in a 4-4-1-1 he could play in the midfield four no problem.

I've no doubt Modric would slot in easily, just amazed that you would pick him given the choice of the two

Modric also has the advantages of being younger than Sneijder and of having already played in the PL...

Lol ok Tommy. Do you think Sneijder would find it tough in the Premier League?

You speak like formations and systems are set in stone. They are constantly evolving to get the best out of a set of players. Sure it is easy to see a straight replacement in Modric for an ageing Scholes but for me Sneijder is much close to the player Scholes was at 26-27. When he used to be very advanced and even play off a front man.

Like i said, Sneijder could play anywhere IMO and that includes doing everything Modric can do

Also if we're looking at it realistically, the chances of us getting Sneijder are virtually zero.

TBH I see it as a similar case to that of Veron. He was an equally gifted midfielder imo, but just didn't fit into United's set up.

Well at the time of his transfer he was seen as one of the best midfielders in the world, but due to roy keane he never fitted in with United's line up.

Same thing with Sneijder, except this time it's rooney rather than Keane. I'm really not entirely sure how you don't see the comparison....

SnoochieBoochies of course there are. Teams and formations are constantly evolving and IMO Fergie would be more than happy to adapt his set up to accommodate Sneidjer.

I really don't think it is anywhere near as hard as accommodating someone like Sneidjer as it was finding a role for Veron

oooo perhaps a pointer towards some rule changes for fpl in 2011/12? I see they are awarding 1 point for a penalty assist and -1 for giving away a penalty. Plus they have scrapped the negative points for an own goal.

No idea, it's in a format far closer to the Champs League and Europa fantasy games on the site. (Thankfully not exactly like the Europa format which didn't award save points to keepers).

I like it as you're able to make use of your bench between games (swap out terribad players - so long as they didn't get red carded - for ones yet to play) and change captain (to one that hasn't played yet).

I don't like it that an assist is:

"When a player passes it to another player who scores without having to take it round an opposing player"

I guess I'd probably have been pleased if I won tickets to the champions league final or something (although I'd be just as likely to give them to someone who really wanted them).

But I know what happens when you throw a javelin. The only thing I don't know is exactly how far it's going to travel, and I don't care.

Pole vaulting. Looks like a laugh, but come on, that's not a real job.

And Chris Hoy, one of the dullest people on the planet, gets a knighthood. FOR RIDING HIS BIKE FAST. Admittedly, knighthoods are a joke too, with the barely-articulate Sir Alan Sugar also in its ranks.

Just a shot in the dark, but does anyone know if you can adapt a laptop battery for other applications? I think because of the mechanism (pretty sure they have some kind of PCB control) you can't just jumper +/+ -/- and use it to power a SNES or something.
