When Neil Warnock began to build his QPR side around Adel Taarabat, the cock-sure Yorkshireman was taking a risk on the impetuous talents of a player who had been cast aside by Harry Redknapp – rarely a bad judge.

By Christmas the performances of Taarabt had illuminated the Championship, carried QPR to the summit and left Redknapp wondering if he’d be sacked by his employers for allowing such a player to leave the Lane.

Following such an outstanding six months, Taarabt was crowned the Football League’s Player of the Year in March. Whilst Warnock was pipped to the managerial accolade by Norwich’s Paul Lambert, his role in converting Taarabt from an inconsistent show-pony to a disciplined and devastating force, arguably deserved greater recognition.

QPR’s manager will now likely spend the summer using his powers of persuasion to keep Taarabt at Loftus Road. If he succeeds, Warnock must then sketch a blueprint that will again harness the Moroccan’s abilities. Pull that off and Taarabt has the potential to keep QPR afloat and provide us Fantasy Managers with returns that would threaten to overshadow this season’s contribution from Blackpool’s Charlie Adam.

The Statistics

With 19 goals and 16 assists in 43 starts for Rangers, Taarabt arrives in the Premier League with a Championship CV that surpasses any promoted player over the last few seasons. The aforementioned Adam came up last season with 17 goals and 11 assists to his name; he went on to provide superb value, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game where his frequent haul of Bonus Points helped him end the season second in the midfielder scoring rankings.

Taarabt has the same degree of influence for QPR; there’s a similar dominance at set-pieces and, should QPR earn positive results, Bonus Points will surely come the Moroccan’s way. And yet, we’ve seen potential from such statistics fall flat in the past. Birmingham came up with Gary McSheffrey having contributed 13 goals and 18 assists in their promotion in 2006/07, only to bitterly disappoint on the Premier League stage.

A tally of 7 goals and 5 assists in 32 Championship starts whilst on loan at Rangers in 2009/10 offers a more sobering view of Taarabt’s productivity. However, this was during Jim Magilton’s tenure at Loftus Road – indication perhaps that Warnock’s ability to foster Taarabt’s skills in his formation will remain crucial to his Fantasy returns.

Before his arrival at QPR for two loan spells, Taarabt’s potential can only really be measured anecdotally. When Martin Jol captured the 17-year-old from Lens to bring him to Spurs in 2007 he proclaimed Taarabt as a “wizard†stating..

“On the ball I don’t think there’s another talent like him in Englandâ€

He arrived at White Hart Lane having drawn comparison to none other than Zinedine Zidane, albeit from his own agent – Rudy Raba…

“In France he is considered the new Zidane… He is exceptional, he is one of the most talented young players in France, perhaps the most talented.â€

By the start of the 2008/09 season however, Juande Ramos’ arrival at White Hart Lane saw Taarabt ignored. When Harry Redknapp took over the reins, the Morrocan was at least brought in from the cold and handed back his squad number, but he was later allowed to leave for a first loan spell at Loftus Road in 2009.

Having once demand £4.5 million for his services, Redknapp eventually allowed Taarabt to leave on a permanent deal for a fee reported to be just £1 million. Taarabt’s progress from that point has justified at least some of the hype lavished upon him; it has certainly made a mockery of Redknapp’s evaluation.

The Prospects

Harry is very rarely so wrong on a player however and Fantasy managers will approach Taarabt with a degree of caution given the jump in class ahead of him.

Premier League managers will be wary of the devastation he can cause but at the same time aware that, when tested, Taarabt’s temperament could be a flaw.

Defenders will welcome him with biting tackles, midfield enforcers won’t allow him space to unravel his repertoire of flicks and showboating antics. The stance taken up by the top level referee’s will also be crucial – react badly early on to some of the inevitable treatment coming his way and sympathy for Taarabt’s frequent flailing falls to the deck could be ignored or worse still, met with cards.

These reservations could all be academic should Taarabt seek a move – that’s still a very real prospect. When asked whether he would stay at Loftus Road following promotion, Taarabt offered little reassurance to Rangers faithful…

“I don’t know, I did everything for the club this year. The manager told me ‘It is up to you, if you want to go I won’t stop you because you did everything for me, but I would be very happy if you stay for me’. So he gave me a choice. So I have the summer to think about it.”

Should Taarabt find his way to a bigger club, his Fantasy potential would likely take a significant dent. The Moroccan conducts matters at QPR; manufacture a move and he’s likely to end up as a flamboyant soloist drowned out by a vast orchestra of talent.

Taarabt and his agent will wait on interest from Spain or the Premier League’s elite then; us Fantasy managers also need to bide our time. QPR’s magician is a hugely tempting prospect should he remain under Warnock’s wing and, if his manager can again build a system around him to protect and allow his talents to come to the fore, then the rewards look rich indeed.

The FPL will be toying with his pricing – considering the impact of Charlie Adam and attempting to anticipate whether Taarabt can match or even better his showing. A similar initial value of just 5.0 seems inconceivable – something around 6.5 would seem more likely. Even with such a valuation and with his abilities unproven in the top-flight, Taarabt would remain a “most-wanted†target.

While the transfer circus has yet to escalate, with the City chequebook still to be unfurled, Taarabt’s arrival in the Premier League is already providing ample excitement. Big things are expected – and with a price tag that should make him instantly available as an asset, Fantasy managers are amongst those eagerly anticipating his appearance at the top level.

anyone think this england team would work? or basically do better than the current one.

    --------------------- hart --------------------
    johnson ------ ferdinand --- terry ------- cole
    ----------- wilshere ---- gerrard -------------
    -- a.johnson --------- rooney -------- young --
    ----------------- walcott ---------------------

would love to see walcott blooded as the furthest man forward basically playing on the shoulder of the last man and running in behind. a passing core of wilshere, gerrard and rooney surrounded by 3 pacy, tricky, selfish buggers

I think that could work actually on paper and individually you's have a world of talent but keep faltering.

I would probably play lamps over Stevie G though.

i disagree with England having a world of talent. Prolific strikers (none), midfielders who can keep posession (1). good keeper though.

Hmmm, I dont know, admittedly I think alot of their players are over rated. Their first team is pretty good but think their mentality and the pressure mounted on them by the press and the fans contributes to their continual 'underachievment'.

because of the size of England and the league they have you have to compare them to the likes of Spain, Argentina, germany etc and i don't think they come close. don't get me wrong if we or you had a team of that quality (england) i would be over the moon but we are only small countries with limited resources.

Of course you do, but I think one of the main contributors is the fact that the majority of english players stay in england and do not move to italy or spain or germany to apply their trade. I completely agree on the national stage i think Englands national team do not come close to the Germans, Argie, Brazilians and the Spanish.

i just think they play the game the wrong way, as do we. you need to keep the ball and move around a lot. stuff the 40yd wonder pass that gets cut out( talkin to you stevie g). all you need is the players to execute it and the right training from a young age. simple! probelm solved.

You talk sense. I agree with that aswell. You sure your not a hun? 😛 going back to your previous point do you think if we had that quality available in our country we would be in the same position? I think the Scottish & Irish mentality is completely different, but maybe thats just the era I've been brought up in.

we would do better than england i think, just because everyone would be on the side of the team (media included) and expectations would be lower. we're just glad to get to the finals. after that it's a bonus

yeah the time difference was a bit frustrating for that world cup, i hope you didn't have a german kid in your class. 89 minutes of being scowled at and then a few minutes of being taunted as you equalised.
we had a bar next to my school and me and a friend tried to go and watch the england argentina game there. i got to the door and looked in and saw about 10 people in front of the tv was about to go in then saw one of them was my dad so had to turn back and get back to lessons. i've still never told him, but always wished i walked in and when he asked, "shouldn't you be in school" i could have replied "shouldn't you be at work."

I'm a big fan, mainly of Joe though...it is after all my actual real name. Adam can be a little too smug when he's on his own or with other rich media chap Jennings. Adam's solo show the big mix tape was ok at first, but got embarrasing after a while.

I used to love the tele show as well, especially the footie song and when they went round people's houses to look through their record collection. the mark e smith one where he just beats them up was a favourite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpdiGGWlqLg

I hated that one T____T picking on the A and J.

We were talking about the show yesterday, the Teris song, and Roscoe H Spellgood.

Have you heard of Sifl and Olly? Very out there humour, but I'm a huge fan. Check out the songs "fake blood" and "pots and pans", plus any part of the show with chester in it.

I don't think it will happen, could just be a smokescreen to land someone else.

But he's still young, only 24 this month, if he really isn't going to sign then Arsenal would have to let him ago and the fee would be no more than £15 mil. Definitely worth a punt, he looked quality when Fabregas wasn't in the side early this season. Could definitely bring something to our team.

Another thing, the interest could just be a smoke screen so Levy can't name his price for Modric. With Nasri as a possibilty, United won't have to pay over the odds.

Still think this possible Sneijder transfer has just been plucked out of nowhere. Probably by an optamistic United fan. Most rumours end up rubbish and the real transfers are done on the DL, like the Jones one which wasn't mentioned much before it happened.

Hi this is open to anyone. (except Demi)

Me, Mcnulty and a few others on TFPL are starting up a poker league for pokerstars where we play against each other and have tables etc.

It's pretty cool as it tracks standings and player stats as well as allows us to play just against each other..

If anyones interested in joining or playing even just a bit now and then, just let us know and we can give you the club code etc.

We're thinking of having a small sit and go table tonight so if anyones interested 🙂

    Big love

In the future get Kelly in there if he develops well.

    Hey,

I’ve been messing around with this Uefa U21 game and in doing so I think I’ve unearthed a gem of a bet…

    The Czech Republic – 6/1.

    Here’s my thinking…

Only one of the 10 qualifying groups provided two eventual finalists, those being the Czech Republic & Iceland. This would suggest that this was a good heat, especially when you consider that the defending champions were out of the money.

The play off’s then saw them canter past Greece 5-0 on aggregate. Greece don’t forget, were the team that topped England’s group.

Spain U21s had to settle for the runners up spot in Holland’s group and Holland in turn were found wanting by the Ukraine. This might suggest the Spanish are favourites on the strength of the exploits of their full international team – not their own merits.

I’ve had a good look at the teams in group A and I’m pretty convinced at what we’re looking at there – two beaten semi finalists!

Ok, I know that there’ll be some changes of personnel here and there but overall 6/1 looks pretty tasty to me.

Anything to get as many English lads in 😉

Give it time - by august he will have J Cole in there over Suarez.

If only Liverpool didnt buy Carroll now. 35mil to get 2 wingers and this summers budget to get creative mid and 2 defenders.

If they didnt buy Carroll they'd still need a striker though. N'Zogbia for less than 10 million, would be good business imo.

                Right on time:

Comolli quote: "If a player is English or British or has played in the PL we'll look at that over someone who is abroad"

Says it all. Liverpool will do very well to compete with that as a platform.

    Yay, just read this article.

Got to say, I really am excited for Taarabt playing in the Prem this season. I'm also inclined to dismiss any comparisons with McSheffery straight away. McSheff had nowhere near Adel's talent.

Quite simply I don't think there has EVER been another player like Taarabt in the Championship.

IMO his skill set exceeds any player who has ever played there before.

His temperament is the drawback. He also needs to quit the 'Ronaldo' style showboating, but the guy seriously oozes talent and, at his age he still can improve too.

Sure, he'll frustrate the hell out of you some weeks but, by jiminy, he can produce single moments of brilliance (like his goal against fellow Premier League newcomers Swansea last season) that will have you drooling in awe!

He carried a lot of the goalscoring burden for us last season when Mackie got injured and Warnock will be getting another striker to share the load, so I think he will score less goals than this year.

But he loves to take players on and run at defenders and that may well earn him favourable recognition from the bap judges.

He'll win you penalties (and prob take them too) and I think you'll get a decent load of assists and bonus points from him too.

Oh yeah, and the occasional wonder goal.

Lots of 5under1and doom around these parts lately. Ironically enough I believe they will be grand next season. O'Shea is reliable and solid, Brown is a risky signing as he is so injury prone (Bruce LOVES injury prone centrebacks) Gibson can do a job. Most of all I think Sessegnon is a decent player and Gyan will score 15-20.
Pretty solid outfit, I reckon they'll finish 9-13th ish, safe mid table.
Blackburn, Wigan, Swansea and Norwich will struggle. Wolves should be around the mix too.

Ngog isn't much improvement, same with Gibson. They're weaker than they were February this year, and look at their form since then. I like Sunderland as a club, but wory for them.

Look at the injuries they suffered though. Had a bit of bad luck to be fair.

Sunderland have a lot of strenghtening to do next year to stay up at least. Form after Bent left was awful, and now they've lost Welbeck and Henderson (yes I know he's not all that) as well. Gibson and Ngog arent going to improve them much either. JOS is a good signing though.

I'll be disapointed if we don't at least equal our 10th placed finish. Our form was poor after Bent left, but that also tied in with a ridiculous injury list.

Plenty of money left to buy Gyan a partner as well, and may also get Welbeck on loan again. I think the pessimisim is greater from non sunderland fans for some reason, perhaps because we don't see losing Henderson as a bad bit of business.

Weak links from your lineup - Adam, gives the ball away in key areas. Basically Lucas is a better player in that role. Agger wont be used as a left back, and Carragher is weeeeeeell past his limited best.
I'd be pissed off if I was Spearing, looked decent when he got his chance last season now another green player has come in and will push him out.

      Yes, I'm playing.

Reznik of Czech Repubic. £4.5m and if you look at their qualifying I think he started nearly all their games.

Its hard because even the expensive players don't play every game if you look back at the qualifying games. For example, I've got Muamba in my team because he's been pretty much an ever present in the team despite his modest price tag of £5m.

Bojan did bugger all in qualifying goals wise I can't understand why he's £10m.

I agree with Nomar, it's worth having muamba, seems to be nailed on starter, and I think if Rodwell starts too they will switch between att and def between them..

City have been surprisingly quite so far this window....

Also, Sunderland have sold Henderson for 16 plus a further 3.5 million in add ons, you'd think they'd just leave it there but they're trying to get a separate deal for Ngog now, which I think is pointless as he's not going to improve them much.
