Having snapped up Phil Jones from Blackburn earlier this month, Man United continue their summer of domestic acquisitions with the capture of Ashley Young on a five-year deal from Aston Villa for a fee believed to be in the region of £15m.

Young arrived at Old Trafford on Wednesday for a medical and, having agreed personal terms, the transfer was completed following weeks of speculation. With the player out of contract next summer and having already announced he had no intention of extending his Villa Park career, new boss Alex McLeish had little option but to sell his prize asset within days of arriving from Birmingham, saying:

â€Ashley has made a terrific contribution for Villa over the past four and a half seasons and everyone at the club wishes him the best for the future. He has become an important player in the England team during that time and I’m sure he will be looking forward to this new challenge.â€

Upon completion of the deal, Young had this to say to United’s own tv channel:

“The opportunity to come and play for one of the biggest clubs in the world is one I couldn’t turn down. It’s a chance to hopefully become part of their history by helping to win the 20th title…It’s a prospect I always looked at from being a child: to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world. I’ve got that opportunity now so I’ve just got to take it with two hands.”

The Statistics

Aged eighteen, Young made his debut for Watford but the first couple of seasons were largely uninspired, with just 3 goals and 1 assist from 39 appearances. The arrival of Aidy Boothroyd as the new Hornets boss in 2005-06 transformed the winger, with Young scoring 14 goals and making 13 assists to help fire the club out of the Championship and into the Premier League.

Young spent just half a season as a Watford player in the top-flight, although a series of impressive performances persuaded Martin O’Neill to splash out £8m to bring him to Villa Park. Since his arrival, Young has established himself as one of the most consistent wide men in the Premier League. Young spent four-and-a-half seasons in the Midlands, playing 157 league games, scoring 30 goals and providing 44 assists, and has become a recent fixture in the England squad of late, scoring 2 goals in 15 appearances.

Young missed just 4 games last season for Villa, scoring 7 goals and picking up 11 assists on his way to scoring 160 FPL points last season, the fifteenth highest total of last term. Young was also a favourite with the Bonus Point judges, grabbing 27, the seventh best total in 2010/11. This return followed hauls of 7 goals and 9 assists in 2008/09 and 5 goals and 11 assists in 2009/10.

The Prospects

At present, Young’s arrival at Old Trafford merely clouds the waters for Fantasy managers- Antonio Valencia’s broken ankle restricted him to 10 appearances last term and allowed Nani the game time to resultantly finish 2010/11 as top-scoring player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but if all three are fit and battling for the wide spots along with Ji Sung-Park, the Fantasy appeal of these players takes a severe blow. With Sir Alex Ferguson spoiled for choice, who can predict his first XI from one gameweek to the next?

Young’s adaptability as a second-striker may improve his selection chances when Ferguson decides to rest the likes of Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez on occasion but, again, this scenario is too unpredictable and does not strengthen Young’s Fantasy appeal. If anything, Young’s adaptability reduces pre-season confidence in the likes of Hernandez.

With his fair share of set-pieces and corners, in addition to penalty kicks thrown in, Young was something of a solid, albeit sometimes frustrating, Fantasy pick last term. Indeed, it’s worth noting that four of his seven goals were spot-kicks. It’s difficult to imagine that Young will be granted similar opportunities at Old Trafford. He will surely find competition for direct free-kicks, while Rooney will be expected to tie up penalty duties once again.

Priced at 8.5 last season, a similar value can be expected in the upcoming FPL campaign. There’s every possibility that his initial value will be hiked given his level of consistency at Villa – further reducing his appeal.

The only real positive aspect of the move from a Fantasy angle is the knock-on effect at Villa. The potential of Stewart Downing, if Alex McLeish can persuade the ex-Boro man to stay at Villa Park, will undoubtedly increase, with young Marc Albrighton possibly being given the chance to establish himself in Big Eck’s starting XI.

Young’s 27 Bonus Points last season represented 25% of Villa’s overall haul in that area – Downing and Albrighton would seem well placed to benefit from some of those points next term, while set-pieces will also be up for grabs. Darren Bent looks another likely beneficiary – he will surely be granted responsibility from the spot at Villa Park – a factor that will further boost his appeal for Villa’s kind run of opening opponents.

While Young’s departure will hinder Villa’s attacking progress next season – in Fantasy terms, the likes of Bent, Downing and Albrighton may yet emerge as stronger propositions. Until we know more on Alex Ferguson’s thinking and his likely first choice lineup, the same cannot be said for a host of United’s attacking talent.

In fact, decent mail is pretty important. When I was a kid, I used to phone car dealerships claiming to be interested in buying different cars.

Then when I started getting more mail that my parents (in the form of brochures) they wondered what the hell was going on. Still it decorated my schoolbooks nicely, and I learned something.

Did you know that Mercedes tune each of the panels in their cars to a different resonant frequency?

Here, then, is what might well be the United side to line up against Manchester City in the Charity Shield.

De Gea; Fabio, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra; Jones, Rooney; Valencia, Young, Park; Hernandez.

Rooney could move back into the creative midfield role that his performances have long insisted he was born to play

Jones, for instance, if he is to play as a centreback, could find himself fourth in line behind Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and his under-21 colleague Chris Smalling. But as a defensive central midfielder, his combination of good distribution, cool control and snappy tackle might well work nicely.

Don't think Hernandez will play in the CS as he'll only have had a few days back in training.

In reality, Anderson or Cleverley could start in midfield, or Young could start behind Rooney and Nani start on the left. There's so many options it's brain scrambling. It will however give a great indication of whether SAF will play 451 or 4411 against the 'big' teams this year. The 4411 got beaten by liverpool, arsenal and chelsea away.

I personally think Jones will be used sparingly, in League Cup, in early rounds of easier Champions League fixtures we may see Smalling and Jones, I don't think he will play DM much personally, Fletcher will be back to full fitness hopefully and Carrick is always there, thereabouts.

You already have Nani, Valencia (both better than Young imo) Cleverley, Giggs and Park for the wings.

Ever Banega or Javi Martinez would of been a better sort of signing. If you want them now your summer spending will be £100m+

His impressive performances in the U21 have hopefully raised his profile a little though, which has raised his price 😉

I really don't think Valencia is as good an all round player as Young, Young can play on both sides, Valencia can only play on the right. Young is a set piece specialist and it's been a long time since we have had a player (barring Giggs and more recently Rooney) who could whip a free kick into the corner of the net, Young brings that to United now, it's expensive sure, but I think it is a good piece of business

Maybe a better all round player, but I know what one I'd want starting in my team. I think the obvious positions you needed to spend on this summer were GK (close) and a new CM, but with £35m+ spent already, neither position has been sorted out.

I don't doubt that Young is a good player (even if I think he's slightly overrated) I think that the £17m could of been spent better elsewhere.

Henderson was £16m, he is also 5 years younger.

Young may be a better player right now but Henderson has the potential to be a brilliant player for us.

Young's contract was up next year too, I would of thought that that would of lowered the price.

"Henderson has the potential to be a brilliant player for us."

Where have you got this from? He looks run of the mill average Gareth Barry type player - At best . He isnt even at this level yet.

Hyperbole really takes place in summer season.

You had 2 brillant players in that position and sold them Alonso & Masherano.

The odds of Henderson reaching that level are almost 0

      Articles with "could" mean nothing.

The list of thing wrote about "could" is endless.

      eg.

Its why 99% of news is now garbage. No honest journalism anymore and its spreading from the rags to the broad sheets.

He can't tackle, which means we need a DM there (Lucas) Gerrard is obviously a different class, and Suarez can play behind Andy.

So even though he wasn't bad playing at RM it's not his best position and there are players who could probably do a better job there than he can.

He's now had an operation and had months to rest, next season he will be fit again.

Demi - maybe, much prefer Dirk upfront though, and even though £17m was alot for Henderson, I think he's a great player and Andy can only improve with such a good crosser of the ball in the team.

PFOR - they did play well together, but Andy was bought before we saw them. Once again, £35m was alot, but that was on deadline day with Torres going to Chelski for £50m. I think although he cost alot it will be worth it, on of the best attacking headerers in the division, fast, powerful, young and importantly wants to play for the club. He had a bad injury when he signed for us and has only just shook it off, you could see the quality in his Newcastle days and in the Citeh match. Signing good wingers like Henderson and Mata will help him and if he's 1.5m or more less than Suarez he'll definately be in my FPL team next season 🙂

A good striker will score for any club v any opposition. Andy scored v Arsenal and Chelsea (and many more) for Newcastle, so with the support of better players why couldn't he do it for Liverpool?

I admit, when we've played him the football hasn't been great, but we haven't had time to really fit a system around, there should be one in place come the new season.

When we beat Citeh the football was beautiful, probably our best performance of the season, with Andy getting two goals, not just one header but a goal of the season (or month atleast ;)) contender.

Bent's one of the best strikers in the division, given the chance I think he could do a good job for a team in the CL.

Chamakh played 6 CL games for Arsenal this season and alot at Bordeux before that, many would argue that Bent is a better player than he is.

      Henderson's crossing is crap.

I remember when we went up to Sunderland last season, he had a really good game in midfield, but his delivery was atrocious.

he's not a bad player, but I'm not sure why Liverpool have an equally talented English midfielder on their books in Jay Spearing.

Unless Raul M. is on his way, it looks like a silly purchase, as does Charlie Adam.

Henderson's crossing is not crap, it's one of the best points of his game. I admit that Henderson wouldn't of been the first player I wanted us to sign this summer, and definitely not for the price we did. But I think he's a great player, very intelligent (football wise) and the kid's just turned 21.

Jay's had a great end to the season and deserves his new contract, but has nowhere near the potential that Jordan does.

It is crap. There was a reason he was so poor end of season as he was shifted to the right side so much

No need to make up fairy tales cos he plays for your team now

Crossing is not one of his plus points. Neither can anyone with a rational head say Henderson is an intelligent footballer - there are countless better in this area of his age who are cheaper which the recent tournament in Denmark showed

Crazy how lately with the valid critism of his fee and poor performances in Denmark how those "defending" him like to go toe to toe and up the ante on how great his positive attributes are.

He played a box to box midfielder with a mid table team who struggled to create goals from central midfield.

I cant see how you think that makes him an intelligent footballer. He isnt even that good a passer - as was demonstrated at an easy level for him playing U 21 players.

To be fair, it was evident he was trying too hard to impress at the under-21s, I dont think he'll be doing the same for Liverpool. Also he was playing under Stuart Pearce.

              Yes
Trying too hard as his ability wasnt good enough and he tried to live up to a fee and value he is not near good enough for.

Players that good wouldnt crumble under the pressure - which was pretty weak considering all he was expected to do was a simple 5 yard pass now and then

Solid player, good future but is a defender so is well over priced.

He's a good player, but he's going to struggle to fit in next season with Gerrard back and Carroll up front.

He went through a great run of form in the first month and a half when Kenny came back, apart from that he hasn't really stood out. Also, his inability to tackle really pisses me off!

I'd like to hang on to him, but £15+ could go towards Mata.

LucasLeiva your obsession with tackling is a typical British fixation. If you watch the top continental teams they seldom actually tackle but use collective pressure on oponents at the right time to win the ball back.

This is what Meirelles has been brought up doing and as such all he knows, it is not his fault if the English players are still closer related to the ape than homo sapiens in terms of modern football tactics.

Intermilan won a champions league beating Barcelona playing without the ball and without tackling put putting the player in possesion under collective pressure and not allowing him to pass to any open opponents. Barca themselves use this tactic as their main form of defence also and the collective pressure generally leads to turnover ball.

I agree with most of what you say on here but regarding meirelles he is one of your (if not THE) best players imo.

But in this league I think you need atleast one person in your team that can get stuck in, do the dirty work and tackle.

Raul is a great player, but I don't see where he'll fit in next season with Gerrard back, £15m worth of talent could be sitting on the bench and I think that it could be better spent elsewhere. I doubt he'd like to sit on the bench either and would rather be playing for another club.

I agree with not sitting him on the bench alright but would you ask kaka or ronaldo to sit deep and play defensive midfielder "go win the ball back and give it to kuyt/suarez/carroll when you have it they will do the fancy stuff" LOL.

He is far more talented than all of those players gerard included. I dont see anyone ever saying modric or scholes should be dropped from their teams as they are poor tacklers???

Spurs have Sandro in the team who can tackle, united have Carrick and Fletcher.

Ofcourse you wouldn't want Kaka or Ronaldo to sit deep and play DM, that's not their position and that's my point. Raul is not a DM which is fine because we have Lucas, but with Gerrard now back in the team he doesn't have that AM role he played in so well last season.

Would you honestly take out Steven Gerrard from the Liverpool team to fit in Raul Meireles?

                  Yes 100%.

Meirelles is a top class cm/att mid and gerrard is neither as has been his problem most of his career with england and liverpool.

He thrived as a support striker for a couple of seasons when all you had to do was run and shoot but his positioning sense in midfield is non existent and his legs are not there to cover for his mistakes anymore.

I'd love to see liverpool going with a 4-3-3 with a def mid meirelles playmaking and gerrard in the lampard role but that is the only place I see gerrard fitting in now.

If you don't think that Gerrard has been top class for most of his career than I cba to debate any more. He has been world class from about 2003/2004 until about 2010. Even right now Stevie is a top quality player and could easily still be put in the 'world class' bracket.

He has everything. Passing, shooting, strength, pace, heading and just about anything else a pro player needs, he is a leader and along with Jamie Carragher, the heartbeat of Liverpool FC.

You think players don't pass their prime SD? and if you agree that they do, can you explain why Gerrard has never made it in international football? It is hardly due to the world dominating teams that England have had in his time?

All Brittish supporters seem to see his him storming around the pitch making tackles, 80 yard passes, long range goals (all of which are comendable attributes and abilities not many players can match in the epl) but his lack of tactical nous and positioning sense is unforgivable at his age (he is hardly going to get this now) and his ability to do all of the above is diminishing with every year.

Hey it's only an opinion in any case and I must say I am a fan of Mereilles.

In reality the truth probably lies somewhere in-between all of this. Gerrard is a very good player, with certain flaws. Meireles is not the messiah.

I'd say both "arguments" in this debate are liable to being wrong and perhaps trapped in their moulds at either end of the spectrum of opinion.

"All British supporters" - sorry Dino, but on that part: give the heck over.

Agreed Andy "All" should not have been the phrased used. There are a lot of discerning Brittish football fans and a large majority of them frequent this site too imo so I should probably have said the majority of unenlightened British fans.

Re the rest of your points I agree also, Gerro is not as far past it as my writings seem to suggest I think and Meirelles is never going to be a Xavi either. I just think at liverpool I would not be so quick to sacrifice a player of his talents because he is a poor tackler (where this whole debate started btw)

It must be hard as a Liverpool fan to come to terms with it, but Gerrard isn't the player he once was. He doesn't have the legs to drive forward the way he would 2 or 3 years ago - that's the whole reason why he's been move backwards.

The truth is, Liverpool's good run last season coincided quite nicely with Gerrard's injury. Lucas, Spearing and Raul M is a lot more industrious and mobile midfield trio, and doesn't mean that there are two midfielder covering the one(i.e. Gerrard)'s back.

Useless money spent on young. I completely believe that Nani is a superior version of young, so unless Sir Alex plans to sell a winger, I do not think this move bears any fruit. Why it is spent still amazes me.

Don’t you think the money could of been spent better though? On a deep lying playmaker maybe?

You already have Nani, Valencia (both better than Young imo) Cleverley, Giggs and Park for the wings.

Ever Banega or Javi Martinez would of been a better sort of signing. If you want them now your summer spending will be £80m+

£80m is just the Ronaldo money, though. Plus say £25m a year transfer budget, so since Ronaldo left that's £75m + £80m = £155m.

Since then spent £17m on Valencia, £12m on Smalling, £7m on Hernandez, £7m on Bebe, £16m on Jones, £16m on Young, say £20m on de Gea = £95m, plus a bit on fringe players, so say £100m

        So £55m still to spend...

(I'm pretending the Glazers don't exist...)

young can play in 3 different positions and can be equally good in all 3 position while nani can only play his best at rw as he is not that good playing on the left side...
and why berba hate?!?!the amount of stick berba gets from utd fans is unbearable...

75 goals in 83 games for Porto - freakishly good stats.

He'd be a good signing, although I dunno where he'd fit in if VB opts for a 4-3-3? Either way he might just be in my team for the first 3 weeks if I know he'll nail down a spot.

I think a similar few would probably get Hulk.

          I guess it's bye-bye to Drogba then.
