Manchester United have today sealed the signing of David De Gea from Atletico Madrid in a deal reportedly to be worth around £17 million. The 20-year-old joins on a five-year contract as the replacement to the recently retired Edwin Van der Sar and will form the last line of defence for Alex Ferguson’s side as they embark on their campaign to retain the Premier League title.

Ironically, De Gea is likened to United’s retiring her; nicknamed “Van De Gea†by his Atletico team-mates, the physical resemblance is there for all to see. Standing 6ft 4in, De Gea is a wiry but imposing figure in the box, confident on crosses, with impressive speed to aid his dominance.

A strong shot-stopper, comfortable with the ball at his feet and with an icy assurance – the comparisons to Van der Sar continue. A penchant for saving penalty kicks is also a welcome string to the bow; shaky distribution being perhaps the one area where De Gea lacks the qualities of the Dutchman he succeeds between the Old Trafford goalposts.

The Statistics

De Gea is undeniably an exciting prospect but, unlike previous goalkeeping signings, Ferguson has not opted for experience and proven pedigree this time around. With just two seasons under his belt in Spain, De Gea’s record offers little indication of his talents.

He made his full debut for Atletico in 2009 after rising to prominence for Spain at youth level; he was a long-time international at Under 16 and Under 17 level before announcing himself in first-team football. His break came following several errors from the then first choice, Sergio Asenjo. De Gea took his opportunity in style, swiftly established himself as the new number one and went on to help Atletico to the Europa League title.

An ever-present last season, De Gea earned 11 clean sheets, conceding 53 goals as Atletico eneded the La Liga campaign in seventh.

The Prospects

There can be few doubts on De Gea’s potential – having impressed during Spain’s Under 21 European Championship triumph, he will go into the season as a winner and with expectations high.

If there is a concern, it will surround his ability to adapt to the Premier League and life in England. At just 20-years-old, the prospect could be daunting and while De Gea looks to have a strong and calm mentality, he may need time to adjust to a new way of life on his arrival in Manchester, regardless how he reacts to a swift dig in the ribs from Kevin Davies.

Any United number one is likely to attract interest from Fantasy Managers, simply because, by default, he is set to be amongst the leading gatherers of clean sheets. United mustered 15 shut-outs last season, a disappointing return for the Champions, but one which typified a season where clean sheets remained unpredictable and, at times, a rarity.

This is likely to have a marked effect on the Fantasy Managers approach to the goalkeeping position. Low and mid-price options have been en vogue for several seasons now and it seems likely that this trend will continue into next season’s campaign.

De Gea could well benefit from the arrival of Phil Jones and the blossoming talents of Chris Smalling when Rio Ferdinand’s fragility resurfaces, and there’s no doubting Nemanja Vidic as a formidable defensive barrier. We could well see Ferguson’s side better last season’s clean sheet haul then and De Gea could resultantly shift into view as a possible option but, with a high price tag inevitable, the lure of cheaper alternatives will always be there.

United’s opening fixtures are also a major consideration when assessing De Gea’s worth. Arguably, Ferguson has a right to complain about a run of opponents that pair the Champions with Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea in their first five weeks of the season. The young Spaniard will have ample opportunity to impress given the early fixtures he has in front of him – whether he can keep his sheet clean over those successive games remains to be seen. Fantasy Managers will surely be approaching the United defence with caution, however, preferring to back their attacking players who are likely to be riled in retaliation against opponents capable of breaching the back four.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Would be too except for MU's tricky start....but if you go with two mid/low priced keepers will be hard to get him in when the fixtures improve...yet another dilemma...

The annual fixture stitch up means i'm going to steer clear of Utd players apart from Vidic - potential goals from set pieces, and hernandez - can score against anyone. De Gea is due a few nervy moments and Chelsea's starting fixtures are ludicrously favourable. I might get Luiz too if AVB plays him instead of Alex.

you're wasting a spot in your team then though.

You only have to play one goalkeeper a week, whereas you need to play 3 defenders. it's better to invest in the defence.

Two cheapies. Expensive goalkeepers are shit versions of expensive defenders because they rarely make enough saves.

Conversely cheap goalkeepers are upgrades on cheap defenders because they make loads of saves.

Obviously an expensive goalkeeper is going to score more points than a cheap one - that's why they're more expensive. But you have to look at the bigger picture.

Say I have two spots left in my team - a goalkeeper and a defender - and (just for example) I want defensive players from QPR and Man City. I could essentially have Gorkss and Hart, or Kenny and Lescott (again, this is an example, so let's assume Toure is still banned and Man City don't buy a big centre half).

Kenny will probably outscore Gorkss because he'll make a fair few saves, while Gorkss won't get too many bonus points, as QPR won't keep many clean sheets. Meanwhile, Lescott will probably outscore hart, as Man City won't concede too many shots on goal with their slow-tempo and 3 defensive mids. Lescott will still be primed for bonus points, and offers decent attacking potential.

So while obviously expensive GK > cheap GK,

cheap GK + expensive DF > expensive GK + cheap DF

Every season there is a much wider difference between the best and worst defenders than keepers, for pretty much the same cost.

It's very much cost efficient to go with cheaper keepers. By no means be all and end all, but definitely muchly right is this point.

The most you should ever spend on keepers is 9 million (altogether).
The keeper system on this game is flawed as cheap keepers make more saves so expensive keepers aren't worth it.

The solutions to this are that keepers still get 4 points for conceeding only 1 goal (i.e. lose their clean sheet for conceeding two) or to raise the points for a keeper clean sheet to 5 or 6.

There aren't really any good cheap rotation pairs this season though. Add to that there were fewer clean sheets last season, especially amongst the smaller teams. I can only really think of Foster who still got decent points despite conceding.

Unless Given + Begovic is 10m, I'll be going for Cech/Hart/De Gea and a cheapie.

The most expensive goalkeeper of all time is currently Gianluigi Buffon (following his €52.29 million transfer to Juventus from Parma), followed by Manuel Neuer (€18 million from Schalke 04 to Bayern Munich in 2011).[2] The British record is held by Scottish goalkeeper Craig Gordon, who signed for Sunderland from Scottish club Heart of Midlothian for £9 million on 7 August 2007.

De Gea went for £18 million thats 20,032,200 Euros making him the second highest goal keeper transfer fee.

If you mean sub keeper for you FPL team at probably £6.5mil then go for it!

            I'm sure agents would talk.

It'd be in their interest to have journalists know if certain teams are coming in for their players.

generally, people within the clubs themselves don't talk.

To the keeper debate earlier, I think an expensive and cheapie. I'm going to go for cech and kenny they rotate nicely if there is ever the need to but cech will start the majority of the time.
If all else fails during the season, the good old wild card will come into play and it will either be wig/bol keepers or stk/avl as they rotate at home all season.

            Look at this way;

            Cech + 4.0 keeper
            Kompany, Collins

            or

            Two 4.5 keepers
            Terry, Komapany

Both come to the same amount in my head, but I'd say that right now the first is a lot better. Cheap keepers have a lot goign for them, but it depends on fixtures, interaction with other defenders, squad rotation etc.

I've been pretty set on an expensive keeper recently but I'm not too sure and I'll probably just see but my main reasons were the uncertainties in the defences of the teams with pricey keepers.

Do we really know the set back 4 for Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, City etc? It may be come clear but with Chelsea for example u wanna take advantage of their fixtures early on so u can't really wait to see who will be in their back 4 with Terry Alex Luiz Ivanonvic Bosingwa & Cole all competing for 4 spots it's tough to call. Thus making the keepers safer options.

Other reason is the chance you will pick the wrong keeper with the rotations. Its ok saying u had Foster all season and he got however many points but did you actually get those points from him? Most of the time it maybe obvious which keeper to pick but it's not always that simple.

If you went for the Cech Kenny combo for example how many times realistically is Kenny gonna outscore Cech? Probably not often I wouldn't have thought, and those tough games for Cech at OT Anfield etc you still have the option to play Kenny.

Just some thoughts and those good reading either, im yet to 100% decide.

Decent little app for the iPhone if anyone is interested, search for Football Rumours in the app store, I'd recommend specifically going for the Lite version as you get notifications. It basically just gets all the rumours together from various sources but youll get a notification on done deals etc. Only thing u miss out on the Lite version is a couple of the stories but most people usually no what they are and the full versions doesn't do the notifications.
