Having captured Seb Larsson on a free transfer from Birmingham, Sunderland flexed their financial muscles by announcing the signing of Ipswich starlet Connor Wickham for a fee that could rise to £12 million.

The 18-year-old arrives at the Stadium of Light on a five-year deal, fresh from a season with the Tractor Boys that was scattered with eye-catching goals and performances. The 6ft 3in striker claimed the Football League’s Young Player of the Year award for his displays, adding momentum to a bandwagon of hype and attention which culminated in the Black Cats swoop on Wednesday.

Sunderland had to break the transfer record for a football league player to see off the attentions of Liverpool and numerous other suitors; this for a player who will surely need to be eased into his career in the top flight.

While Steve Bruce will be mindful of managing the impact of his new young prospect, Wickham himself remained typically focused on his arrival on Wearside….

“I’m confident in myself and my ability…I know what I can do and am capable of…I’ve never felt pressured or intimidated by matters off the pitch but I’m relieved to have everything done. Now I’m looking forward to getting back into training, getting back into football and meeting the lads. I know what I can do. I’ll work hard, do the best I can and get my head down.”

The Statistics

Wickham has been fast-tracked to the Premier League. He made his debut for Ipswich at the age of just 16 years and 11 days in April 2009, breaking the club record. He went on to make 10 league starts that season, with 19 appearances from the bench. Six goals and an assist arrived in that campaign and his displays were enough to immediately put Premier League clubs on alert.

Last season Wickham made further strides – nine goals in 37 league appearances represented significant progress. All those goals arrived in 2011 with Wickham used as an impact sub to that point. From the New Year however, having served Roy Keane form the bench, Wickham was promoted to the starting XI by new boss Paul Jewell.

While Jewell’s decision to hand Wickham regular starts had results on the pitch, it also got the club Scouts furiously circling Portman Road. The club moved swiftly to sign their star asset on a new contract in April but, realistically, this served mainly as a means of assuring a minimum bid rather than securing the player’s future at the club.

The Prospects

Sunderland’s investment certainly looks sound in the long-term – Wickham is a centre forward with huge potential. A physical specimen with all the attributes to lead the line, he possesses an assured first touch for a big man and has guile and trickery in his armoury. Wickham’s finishing has also caught the eye; for one so young, Wickham can display an assured touch in front of goal and can strike the ball with either foot. It’s a package will have Sunderland fans purring in anticipation; the question is, will they get to see Wickham produce results next season?

Steve Bruce played a major part in attracting Wickham to the club according to yesterday’s claims from the player himself. The Sunderland boss now has the task of reining in his new young talent, whilst serving the supporters inevitable hunger to see Wickham unleashed. The opportunity for a first team breakthrough will surely have proved motivation for Wickham and Bruce certainly suggested that the 18-year-old could make an immediate impact at the club…

“He’s still very young, but at 6ft 3in, he’s a physical presence. With his height and style of play, he will offer us a threat in front of goal and complement our existing strikers. We have been watching him for a while now and he is improving and developing all the time. He’s a great prospect and I’m sure our supporters will love watching him play.â€

Fantasy Managers will need to monitor the pre-season and assess how Bruce is likely to use his new asset. With the experience and pedigree of Asamoah Gyan still at the club, the Sunderland boss may afford himself time to blood Wickham gradually rather than throw him against Premier League defences.

With another signing up front perhaps on the cards, there’s a suggestion that Wickham could get loaned out by Sunderland. A regular bench role seems more likely and that will obviously hinder the striker’s potential as a Fantasy prospect. If however, Wickham can successfully make the step up and bring his presence and talent to bear, we may see him emerge as a potential bargain during Sunderland’s favourable fixture window in November. It may be too much to ask for Wickham to earn starts and produce the goods any earlier.

How on earth does one know whether he's overpriced or not? There are some quite poor knee jerk reactions on here, almost always from a basis of far too little knowledge ... ðŸ˜

He could be under priced - we just won't know for at least two seasons ...

The interesting question is - will he get some game time? If he does, I think he'll score, BECAUSE I trust the people who've done the scouting - and Bruce will have done the same ...

Agreed Micael. I would expect his first season to be similar to his last at Ipswich. Possible frequent inclusions on the bench, leading to more starts later in the season. The health of the rest of the Sunderland squad obviously a caveat.

Should be nicely conditioned for kickoff :-). I won't be going near The Pool for a while anyway. I was a bit worried that it looked like the honey period of KD was coming to an end the last few games last season. Hopefuly it was just end of season laziness. The main reason is I just can't handle the double depression of losing and having them in my squad.

Indeed he does. Are you happy with Fat Sam Michael? Obviously his 2yr contract is to get ye up and then keep ye up and I suppose that's all ye want(?) but he's so wrapped up in his own crapulence. I suppose his mundane, grind style of football is whats needed in the championship thpugh.

No doubt on the wage bill. Not sure accuracy of the story a week or so ago that had 500,000 a week in wages for players from Roy and Rafa era still on the books. None the less Henry will have to work something out.

    EVOLUTION:

Some parasites are absolutely amazing. There is one which goes through its adult stage inside cats, so in order to get there it enters a rat's/mouses's brain system causing it to have a suicidal non-fear of cats, making it susceptable to being eaten thereby transfering the parasite.

Parasitoid wasps are even more amazing. Some of these somehow maniupulate other animals for there own benefit. I'll link so ye can read em rather than listening to me

oversupply in the middle of mostly poor quality or older midflielders (gerard). Not sure about liverpool apart from suarez- if suarez away in comes kuyt.

I am an arsenal fan and unsure aboutt hem as well- at this rate it will be wilshere - diaby - rosiky midfield ouch

i was going to but there isnt any great rotation from the teams i expect cleanies from at the beginning so ill mix n match from the start.

im planning to wildcard after gwk11 and from gwk12 blackburn n stoke rotate perfectly with nice home fixtures up until the jan wildcard time so ill do the 2 x treble up then i expect

What he have done so far is good business, Meireles is probably on his way out, still trying to flog Aquilani and Jovanovic.
henderson = cover/rotation option for Gerrard as they are similar with pushing forward , Adam will be the cheaper and chubby version of Alonso and Downing will finally add the width we have lacked also Maxi has stated that he woud like to go back home to where he started out. I think Kuyt will either be pushed onto the right again or used as the 3rd option striker.
This is only my guess though

I reckon so but there is another option that isn't available just yet and that is Juan mata, there has been alot of speculation for weeks now about him coming to Liverpool, if this is true the money we pay for him will mean he won't be sat on the bench.

I know what you mean but the amount of speculation that has been going on and the amount of time it's gone on for leads me to believe this may happen.
Our problem is DC seems to take an age at preparing realistic bids sometimes and other clubs go in and get it sorted straight away.

I don't think it 's gonna stray very far from the ones already lnked to be honest (Adam,Downing, NZog(?)) I really don't see the point in splashig out on any one else really. Raheem could certainly have a say in this years team as could Suso and Pacheco please god so I don't understand the links with Lennon at all. We have some fantastic young fellas who could easily be stand ins for injurys etc so why not use them.

It all depends on the price for Downing, i know we are not willing to pay over the odds. I like the philosphy of Henry and the approach we are taking.
Alot of fans feel we will be challenging for the title etc next season. I don't i think the season after is when we will be challenging, if we carry on buying quality youth or who we think we can make a great player that is young then we have the foundations to build a great team for years to come.
I think there is going to be one relativly big signing this transfer window, i wouldn't like to hazard a guess as to who though!

I'm really not convinced at all by Newcastle, I was picking them and Sunderland to struggle this season but I think Sunderland have signed well enough in terms of Wickham Gardner & Larrsson to be ok and theyve not let a lot go.

Newcastle however, losing Nolan and probably Barton, 2 good experienced Premier League players and getting in a couple of unproven French guys, we've had plenty in the Prem come with a reputation and fail. I no which combo I'd rather have. I do think Ba could do well but he does have the odd injury problem. Ben Arfa has potential but people got carried away after only a handful of games. Just my thoughts.

Can i ask if i'm the only one that thinks the "RMT" posts before the prices are announced as useless waste of space!

I dont plan to do one untill we have had some preseason!

Not trying to be controversial but really they are pointless!

RMT posts before the prices have come out is pretty pointless I must admit.

Fair enough for people to say they will get such and such whatever the price. For example my RMT at the moment simply reads Baines, Bent, RVP plus some others.

I can see your point, but its essentially good way to ask the masses what they think of your draft team. For example if someone had Suarez in their RMT the masses could give their opinion on Suarez and then inform the dude that he's likely to miss GW1. I dont think you can ever be too early prepared and personally speaking my deadline is July 19th to get my team in as I doubt FF will be my main focus when travelling.

I believe that Kolarovs success depends on the success of Dzeko. if Dzeko kan find his form and develop a decent first touch then Kolarov will be the bomb. City need a striker with good headers. What did they score last season? Was it one goal from a header?

CB? I wouldn't of thought it would change the midfield round much, Gerrard and Lucas are nailed on, same with Suarez and Andy. So that leaves the LW and either Kuyt or Henderson on the left (can't see Raul playing there).

So I guess, barring an injury, he'll be on the bench at the start of the season.

btw I'm very happy he's back, good player who deserves a second chance. Don't really know why Woy let him go, he looked good when he played in 09/10.

I wouldn't of thought so, Henderson will still get alot of game time this year, most of it at RM imo.

I think Kuyt will be the starting RW for the new season (although he is a far better striker) but who knows, KK could want to throw Henderson in right away.

The central-midfielder Alberto Aquilani has given an interview to Sky Sport about his return to Liverpool following the Juventus experience. "I am returning to Liverpool with great enthusiasm, I have no problems with it. It is not true that I didn't want to go back to England. I leave Juventus on good terms, perhaps there was too much waiting around in the squad, in any case I have fallen outside those restrictions. Delneri paid for everything but he wasn't specifically culpable. My feelings? I am sorry for the supporters, they have got behind the players brilliantly and can only be thanked for that. Now there is a wait for the Americans who must build a great squad."

Good stuff, i can't remember where i heard what i'd heard. If he's looking forward to the challenge then fair dos. It's good news really more competition for places means players putting the effort in.

swear i read KD saying he is not playing Henderson out wide. Also why would you? Kids a CM. I know he filled in out there for 11 games last season, but doesn't add up for me.

Henderson started out as a RM, in his first couple of games for Sunderland, on loan at Coventry and in his first real season in the PL.

I can't see him getting any games in the middle this season with Gerrard, Lucas, Raul and Aqua (and potentially Adam) so he could get some gametime on the right.

Interesting. I save all the starting formations from the EPL and dont have him starting out wide in any early matches last season or the 09/10 season. Have to watch this a little more closely 🙂

Pretty sure he did mate, in 09/10. And definitely on loan at Coventry.

Are those squads online, would be good to look through them 🙂

you can go to soccernet.com and click on the game cast of any match in EPL, click on tactical formation then chose starting formation or average formation.

Not saying he hasn't played out wide so please do not take it that way. But not as much as some LFC fans would hope or like 🙂 Also not sure on his conventry days. Either way it will be interesting to see where he plays. For me you icon makes way for him and unjustly at that.

                  Cheers, I'll have a look.

Can't see Lucas getting dropped, our player of the season last year and having him as the DM in the team will give Gerrard license to get forward more often.

No, but it will put them down the pecking order. Spearing played very well in the last couple of months of last season and tbh I didn't think he could step up to that level, he deserved his new contract.

There was talk that Jonjo was going out on loan to Blackpool in the Adam deal, but with Aqua back I'm not sure if Adam is still coming.

Both need game time, Jonjo is younger so either championship or higher for him and although he played well I wouldn't mind Spearing going to a PL side on loan.

That's what i read also. He was suppose to be a loan for a year to tip the deal since LFC rate Adam less than BPool.

I agree about Spearing. I thought he did really well covering the Gerrard role while he was injured and improved as the season went on. Looking at the current squad I'm not sure there's anyone else in the that could do that as well as he did.
Talk of Wilson going on loan to Blackpool as well as Shelvey and Darby as part of the Adam deal!

Wilson and Jonjo loans, Darby permanent?

Wouldn't mind that, Darby looked good a couple of seasons back when he was the ressies captain and played a couple of games for the first team but really hasn't done anything since. With Kelly, Glen, Flanagan and Carra all able to play RB ahead of him, we might aswell let him go.

Wilson has never impressed me, although he does look better in the middle than at LB, good loan move too.

to be fair i don't think Darby has had much of a chance since his time in the reserves but think a loan would work for him and give him a chance to prove himself.
From what I've seen of Wilson I think he's done pretty well. We're hardly overflowing with quality at CB either so I'd rather keep him for now.

I haven't heard of any transfers out of LFC yet. I'm hoping a few will get shipped out 🙂

    Hi,

Does anyone have any stats on where bps were distributed last season?

i.e. overall percentages that went to GK/DF/MF/STR?

How they were distributed home/away teams?

Which teams picked up the most/least?

Did they generally go to the winning team, were they very often split between both teams?

    How relevant are these questions???

Not really an answer to your question but one thing I like doing is to look at the top 10 points scorers in each position (probably just 5 for goalkeepers) and then work out an average points per player... and use that as a guide for how I should distribute the cash that I spend.

Doing a similar thing for bonus points gives this as an average for the top 10 bonus point magnets in each position:
      Defenders - 16
      Midfielders - 28
      Forwards - 23.5

So a bit of a lean towards the midfielders.

Bonuses tend to go the team that wins which explains why they generally go to the attacking players. it's another reason why I'd generally prefer to pick a midfielder as captain.

eyah AP-what does AP stand for?

anyway, yeah, Northern Ireland people are allowed declare for ireland as per fifa. We give passports to anyone from the north if they want them, seeing as , though technically part of the UK, the North of Ireland is really a part of Ireland, and was stolen from us via plantations throughout the past 400 years. 🙂

all that aside though, he can definitely declare for us if he's from Northern Ireland, and with a first name like Connor, i'd say it's looking slightly more likely than less.
