Bolton made their first summer signing on Friday, confirming the capture of Swansea midfielder Darren Pratley on a free. The former Fulham trainee was out of contract with the Swans having declined the opportunity to stay with the Welsh club having helped them to promotion via the play-offs.

The 26-year-old arrives at the Reebok on a four-year-deal and will contest for a start in a Bolton midfield which will be missing Stuart Holden who remains sidelined with a knee injury. Right now then, Pratley looks to have every chance to stake a claim for starts and will join Bolton’s tour of the US looking to impress his new boss Owen Coyle.

“It was nice to leave Swansea on a high after gaining promotion to the Premier League and I’m now looking forward to showing the fans what I can do here. Now I’m really looking forward to Monday and getting into training and meeting the lads. The manager outlined some exciting plans and we had a good chat. I’m fully focussed on playing well for Bolton.â€

The Statistics

Pratley begun his career at Craven Cottage but made just a single appearance for Fulham before spending two successful loan spells with neighbours Brentford. Five goals in 46 appearances for the Bees attracted the attention of then Swansea boss Roberto Martinez and, in the summer of 2006, he joined for a modest fee of £100,000.

He made 28 appearances in his first season in Wales, fetching just a single goal but followed that up with 5 goals and 4 assists in the following season after making 39 starts in the League one promotion year. Pratley’s output increased dramatically as he settled into his Liberty Stadium surroundings, he notched 4 goals and 4 assists in 33 starts in his first Championship season in 2008/09 and bettered that again in 2009/10 by finding the net on 7 occasions.

Last season was his best for the club however – 10 goals and 5 assists represented a handsome return for a player who made 28 league starts before contract wrangles and the form of others begun to restrict his involvement to bench duty. Overall Pratley registered 47 shots on goal in the league, striking the woodwork on three occasions – he ended the season with 12 goals from 32 appearances in all competitions.

The Prospects

Pratley himself offered us a handy synopsis of what he will offer to Bolton on his arrival on Friday…

“The fans can expect someone who always gives 100 per cent. I like to get around the pitch and am a bit of a box-to-box player and hopefully I can chip in with a few goals. I managed to get 12 in my last season with Swansea. Hopefully I can continue to score goals from midfield at Bolton.”

That goal threat was surely key to Coyle’s pursuit of Pratley. Bolton scored just 13 goals from midfield areas last season, relying heavily on the strike partnership of Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies in the opening months, with Daniel Sturridge arriving from Chelsea on loan to fire 8 goals and keep the Trotters afloat over the final ten gameweeks.

Pratley is a tireless, athletic player who will fit in well with Bolton’s work ethic. With the influential Holden absent for at least the first month of the season, he could establish himself alongside Fabrice Muamba and, if he can supply an early goal or two, could well cement a starting role.

Fantasy Managers have been deprived of effective potential within the Bolton midfield, with Martin Petrov, Matt Taylor and Lee Chung-Yong failing to maintain regular starts in Coyle’s lineup. Pratley’s engine and physical presence could see him jump the pecking order and, if he can bring his goal threat to the top level, Fantasy Managers may well take notice when Bolton’s fixtures fall in favour.

There is this little Irish bar in Greenwich Village I took a few ice cold bottles of Heinikens down on an amazing sunny day and just chatted with the locals for some reason I remebered it this afternoon and wished I was there again, the good old days, made me smile.

Fairly dull first half in Brazil-Venezuela. But I'll be perfectly happy if they hold on to the CS having doubled up on Brazilian fullbacks. Both getting involved in attacks too.

Don't think Brazil were that bad, they moved the ball really well and created shots and chances. Just lacked the finishes.

Is that a typical Arsenal fan's appraisal?

    Anyway, 2 clean sheets. Yay!

Yeah, you have t wait for the first round of games to finish before making any changes. Captaincy is standard. I have a strong suspicion that tinkering before the first gamw used up transfers. And there may also be some way of physically buying transfers with real money.

Did anyone else notice that Alves's points were allocated to Maicon? Been changed now. Must have been that email I sent...

Yeah, would be a good signing for most in the bottom half. He does remind me in a way of Odemwingie, bit of a pain to play against but he's finishing can be absolutely awful. Not what we need though, obviously, because we have Odem.

Things looking up for WBA I think!

A keeper needed, Kuszack would fit the bill. Defense will improve with Hodgson as he can turn poor defenders into conpetent ones. Plenty of midfielders and as you say, a quality striker in Odemwingie! I predict you lot to finish 11th-15th.

Would definitely take that. Think our squad is definitely good enough for this league and with Hodgson too, I can't see ourselves having too many problems staying up.

Think we will end up with Kusczak, he was good enough for us when we had him before so I think he will be alright.

Don't think we will change a huge amount, just improve the squad on a whole. Gera is a fantastic side, and if we get David Vaughan too our midfield 100% won't need any adjustments. It will just be bringing in some strikers as competition for Odem and a couple of centre backs.

Kuszcack was always dodgy at United but I think, like Ben Foster, he'll show what a decent keeper he is when he finds his level.

Who would you like to sign as competition for Odem? Fortune is a bit shit and Cox has his limitations. Tchoyi can play as a 2nd striker can't he?

Cox I count as a midfielder now, especially whilst we are playing 451, he will never ever be a lone striker. Fortune is awful, Miller once was showing lots of promise but that seems about 10 years ago watching him now and Tchoyi I'm still not sure about in midfield, let a lone up front.

If I'm honest I wouldn't mind DJ Campbell, despite what I said about not needing him. If we got him though we would still need to buy another one, a target man should be our priority.

Nah, too injury prone to pay £4m for, but probably worth more if you know he is going to stay fit. Think we will definitely go in for him at some point to be fair, wouldn't be a bad signing.

Reds looked good all season. Quade Cooper might win the WC for the Aussies on his own.

Somehow i have a feeling the Saders might win the final. They deserve it after all the travelling they have done and not having a "homeground" due to the quakes.

DF - you have any thoughts on your pre season team?

Although I'm in QLD and obviously would go for the Aussie side.... Crusaders are a great team and most neutrals would want them to win with what the team and NZ has been going through....

Nah no idea on my team yet until prices come out....

Had a look at my current ( end of season team ) and I wish they would let me start the season with it 😉 There should be an option to "roll over" your team 🙂

Surely you don't REALLY think beckford will get more than 2pts vs Spurs(a) first game?

If Sinclair is a striker I'd rather pick him for the bench in gw 1 and play him gw 2 + 3.

Ba/rodalegga both have better fixtures me thinks. Everton do have 3/4 at home after gw 3 though.

Beckford is no certain starter either.

Baface seems to have a decent goals to games ratio wherever he goes.

RVP is RVP and Bentyboy has the fix.

I'd wait on Sinclair and see what he ends up as.

You put your essential players in first and then build your team around them.

Which players are your "go to" boys for the first team sheet?

I'll nominate Tevez and RVP. Possibly Baines too even though he goes against my ubercheap philosophies.

RVP is the only one I can't see being without currently. Baines may be nice, especially if he gets penalties. Will have to see how he affects the money for the rest of the squad. RVP is definitely in my team though

Is that Copa America fantasy game - http://www.thesportcity.com - Lithuanian? If not there's a bizarrely high number of Lithuanian players.

I've now got my head around the points system. It's 3 points just for stepping on the pitch, then:

    Every 30min played = 1pt
CS 3/2/1 for def or keeper/mid/fwd - must play at least 44mins & not get sent off.
    GS 6/5/4 likewise
+1 for goals scored by team while on pitch
-1 for goals conceded, -2 for keepers
    Yellow -1
    Red -3
1pt for every 3 fouls drawn
-1 for every 3 fouls conceded
Only 2 for penalty scored, 4 for a saved pen and -2 for a miss
    -2 for own goals
    3 for an assist
    1 for every 3 saves

For those of you playing your WC early this season...Don't make the smae mistake i did last season:

If you have a free trade due to a "roll over", remember you lose the free trade when playing the WC.

    Eg:

    gw 1
gw 2 - no transfers made, roll trade over to gw 3
gw 3 - have 2 free trades but play WC
    gw 4 - 1 free trade
