Sunderland have this evening confirmed the transfer of John O‘Shea from Manchester United. The defender joins up at Wearside on a four-year deal, with the fee undisclosed.

Following just hours after their capture of Wes Brown, the deal completes a busy day of business for Steve Bruce, with the Black Cats boss snapping up two experienced defenders from his old club as the rebuilding process shows little sign of slowing down.

O’Shea’s versatility will give Bruce options in both full-back positions and the Irishman even has central midfield experience under Sir Alex Ferguson. The 30 year old was delighted with the move, saying:

“Once I’d heard reports about the club and the people here, the ambitions and what the manager was all about it was the only place I was going to come to.”

A double Scout Report on the prospects of both Wes Brown and John O’Shea and their likely effect on the Sunderland starting XI is already under progress and will follow shortly.

No, will be 5 I reckon, an even number anyway so one of 4.5, 5 or 5.5. If it's 6 then he's definitely off my list, 4.5 and he might well be on it.

    I'm thinking something like:

    Hart

Vidic Hangeland (Cheapest Man City) O Shea

    Lampard Ramsey Malouda

    RVP Hernadez Ba

Something along those lines, depending on prices of course.

    Any thougths?

O'Shea and Brown to Sunderland... one of them has to be a good punt at the "right" price and, as long as they are fit, they will both play. If they come in at 5/5.5 I reckon either is worth it... as long as they're fit (ie Brown)

Four year contracts for the pair of them seem mad to me but what do you know. At least they've definitely reinvested their Bent money now (in wages alone I'd guess!)... NUFC fans must be wondering what happened with all the Carroll money...

As an aside I'm glad I'm not a Fulham fan who went to support them today. Apparently there weren't any flights there and supporters wanting to attend needed to get a ferry over.

    It's the 73rd minute. It's still 0-0.

Yeah, there's a lot of rotation risks now, especially Man City defence.

Sunderland looking more and more like Man Utd's bench than Man Utd's bench does these days.

Agree about Lampard, I'd hold off him to start off with. Liverpool look like they will be a difficult team to predict as well. Gerrrad looks like Fantasy Plague right now.

Villa are another one who look like they could struggle as well.

Rooney looks like the only big hitter who is worth starting from opening day. Even Van Persie is not a happy bunny at Arsenal and no Fabs or Nasri potentially....

Man, FPL is going to be hard to RMT on this off-season.

Arsenal are like a dinosaur's egg - you don't want to know what could come out. Liverpool, for me are displaying an alarming disposition of having their cake and eating it - indigestion beckons. For once, David Moyes is not putting out fires - yet. I have put money on Everton to finish 4th - OK, it's Paddy's money, but still ...

Arsenal minus Cesc & Nasri would still finish above Everton imo, but they will definetly spend and try to replace those players. We have only actually bought 2 players so far and one is gonna replace somone leaving (Meireles) and the other is adding depth including covering for a more injury prone Gerrard and our squad wasnt exactly huge before. Everton have bought no one, unlikely will do and they have a crock of a striker plus barndoor Beckford. 7th will be a great season for them imo.

Still a little confused, tough day obviously!

I dont actually neccesaly think Adam will play that regular, id guess Gerrard Lucas Hendo would be the main midfielders with Adam filling in for Gerrard or Hendo when injured. We only paid 7m for Adam, but 20m for Hendo, that says a lot i think.

My guess (as it stands for GW1):

                    ---Hendo Lucas Gerrard---
                    -Kuyt---Carroll---Suarez-

I'm not sure, apart from Kompany, who will start most games??

I'm undecided if its better to have Hart & a cheap keeper that id never play, or 2 decent keepers. Last season I had Foster & Robinson, they rotated very well & that system may have got me more points than only using Hart. Plus it was cheaper too.

Yeah apart from Kompany, it's hard to tell. You'd do well to keep an eye on the pre-season games and see who Mancini looks like preferring, and even then you may not know. Lescott and Kompany will be the first choice CB's until Toure returns, and then it's anyones guess, as he may struggle to find form at the beginning, and Savic may be knocking on the door too.

I don't think my keeper combo is set in stone, so i may go with 2 cheapies, and hope to build up value with one of them ala foster last season, and then sell via my wildcard for the Hart/Cech & cheap goalkeeper combo.

Speaking of Adam, did anyone read on the back page of the Racing Post today that VC are offering 10/11 that he accumulates more bookings than goals this season? Personally, I reckon that's an absolute certainty.

Goose - 'Pool have 2 problems: they don't have a dead ball deliverer, and for 2 seasons Gerrard has not been even a ghost of his former self. Henderson should fill the second problem, as I see it, although there will be a chorus of disapproval, but Adam, at Liverpool for the first? Please.

TBF one of Adams strengths is dead balls, i think Kenny sees Adam playing the role Barton did for Carroll at Newcastle. Im not bothered about him but i can sort of see the theory behind getting him. Gerrard isnt same a lot being due to injuries but he still has a lot to give imo and his role is just different now, playing deeper with Henderson to make the charging runs that he used to.

If you were to keep Meireles and buy a winger, then i think regardless of Henderson's price tag, he will feature more often than not on the bench this season. It's the long term Kenny's looking at after all. Just my thoughts.

Ive said all along Hendo is Gerrards future replacement, probably bought early because of the finicial rules coming in.

My team would definetly include keeping Meireles and would be something like:

          -----------Reina----------------
          Kelly Carra Skrtel/Agger Johnson
          --------Lucas Gerrard-----------
          -----Kuyt Meireles Nzogbia-------
          -----------Suarez----------------

With Hendo & Carroll on the bench as other options.

Theirs been odd rumours but it seems well go back for Downing, I no I'd rather pay 10ish for Nzogbia than 20 for Downing. I can't see Dowing improving much now, he's a decent crosser but does beat a man, Nzogbia can and he can be taught to be less wasteful and become a brilliant player IMO.

Glen's done good there but you can't imagine him signing a new contract if he thought he was going to play on the left.

I think we'll put Glen on the right with Kelly backup for now, until he moves into his natural position in the centre when Carra retires/is past it.

I'm reluctant to see us buy one if it means Kelly on the bench, I'd rather sell Johnson and play Kelly at RB, but your correct that CB is his natural position so u could see him taking over from Carra but he actually looked good going forward playing at RB.

I don't think UEFA will let them get away with that.

Here is what Gabriele Marcotti wrote about similar cases in his very informative article about how UEFA will enforce the FPP rules.

"Oh, while we're at it, let's knock one widely held misconception on the head right now. UEFA will be vigilant when it comes to any kind of attempt to circumvent the rules.

So, for example, Sheikh Mansour can't buy, say, a used football from Manchester City for €100 million $148M) and then book that as revenue for City. Or, rather, he can, but UEFA will only count what it considers the "benchmark fair value" of the ball as revenue ... probably €19.95 ($29) or so.

By the same token, Roman Abramovich can't get one of his companies to sponsor Chelsea for €200M a year: UEFA would look at the "benchmark" sponsorship deals -- probably Barcelona's with the Qataris -- and only count, say, €25M ($37) toward FFP."

          It's a good read overall, I recommend it - http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/gabriele_marcotti/05/05/ffp/index.html?sct=sc_t11_a1

Decent article but I'm not sure I completely agree with their interpretation of the rules and how they relate to Chelsea's wages. I think "proving it has implemented a concrete strategy for future compliance" is a hell of a lot more than a "semantic but surmountable struggle".

Saw you asking about O'Shea playing in goal on twitter ab but didn't respond because 140 chars isn't enough for me!

It's one of the funniest football moments I can remember, it was against Spurs and they were 4-0 up and their keeper got injured or something and they had used all subs.

Watch how he expertly punches the corner straight into the ground, then saves a Robbie Keane one on one, much to Rooney's amusement.

He's going to stay and slog it out with Valencia for the Right-Wing berth. I'd like to see Ashley young given a run of games on the left. Either way it will be too much of a rotation headache to even contemplate bringing him in this season + the fact he will cost alot given his extremely productive last seeason.

I think Carroll can become a good part of the team but only if the long ball is an option and not the norm. I do admit I was worried how much we hoofed it forward when he played and how brilliant and flowing we played when he was out (against Fulham inparticular) I'm just waiting to see how the summer training will have dealt with this issue.
