While the Carlos Tevez saga rumbles on and looks unlikely to end favourably for City, the club have gone about their business to make a second positive move within a week with the capture of Stefan Savic. The 20-year-old, rated as one of Europe’s most promising defensive prospects, signed a four-year deal on Wednesday to join fellow new signing Gael Clichy in the City squad.

At 6ft 1in, Savic is a tall athletic defender who seems well suited to the English game. Renowned for his composure and astute positioning, Savic also has pace and a tidy first touch for a centre-back. Having started his career in Serbia, the Montenegrin international has inevitably been labelled as the next Nemanja Vidic in some quarters but , although Savic will threaten to make an impact on the Premier League next season, he has some way to go before that comparison can be justified.

Despite experience in Champions League and international football, Savic will surely be seen as a long-term option who can provide able back-up in Roberto Mancini’s squad. The Fantasy potential of City’s new acquisition is perhaps limited then; his arrival presenting Mancini with further options with which to shuffle his back four – already a notoriously unpredictable component in the City lineup.

The Statistics

Not surprisingly for a 20-year-old with just a couple of seasons under his belt, Savic does not boast the kind of career statistics that offer indication of his talent. He began his career with BSK Borca in Serbia where he made 27 appearances – a spell which did enough to rouse the attentions of Arsene Wenger who brought Savic over for a trial the Emirates in 2010. For reasons still to be revealed, Wenger decided against offering him a contract and Savic returned to Serbia before Partizan made a move to capture his services on a four-year deal.

Savic went on to make 28 appearances for the Belgrade club, notching a single goal and did enough to earn a call-up to the senior Montenegro squad in April last year having represented his country at three youth levels. His performances were also enough to earn further attention from the Premier League elite – City making their move and showing no hesitation in offering Savic passage to the English top flight. Savic will have a point to prove to Mr Wenger when he eventually makes his Premier League bow.

The Prospects

While it is widely rumoured that Mancini doubts the merits of Joleon Lescott alongside the defensive rock that is Vincent Kompany, it seems unlikely that Savic has arrived as an immediate replacement for the former Everton man. Savic is a right-footed centre-back and has even represented his country at right full-back – most recently against England at Wembley. With Lescott lining up on the left of City’s central defensive pairing, Savic is unlikely to threaten a breakthrough into the staring XI just yet and it seems that Mancini has earmarked his new acquisition as one for the future, rather than a central figure for next season.

Unlike recent arrival Gael Clichy then, Savic is another addition to the City squad that will cause us Fantasy Managers concern rather than offer true potential for regular starts and consistent returns. Savic has the ability to make an impact but would seem set for cameo roles as a rotation option which will dent the security offered by Lescott as Kompany’s regular centre-back partner. Pre-season form and some impressive displays early on could however, promote Savic in the pecking order.

Yeah, that was my point - if the advertising is going and no-one is buying it, it might become untenable.

He could pump money into it, but he wouldn't if he wasn't sure he'd make it back.

Yeah it's plausible, it could happen. I think some advertisers have already pulled out- but they're the same, the chance to advertise in the biggest circulating paper means they'll change their mind when it dies down. They look great pulling out now, superb PR, looks like they're full of morality. Unlikely to last though.

I think there's more chance of circulation dropping.

Did you see any of the clips of Paul McMullen (former deputy ed or something) on the BBC? What a scumbag. Showed no remorse about the practice, described it as part of The Game, and would only concede that the deleting of messages on Millie Dowler's voicemail was wrong- not the hacking to begin with.

An all-round smug scumbag, but the fact that he was so oblivious as to what was wrong suggests that it is very much the culture.

"Our Republic and its press will rise or fall together. An able, disinterested, public-spirited press, with trained intelligence to know the right and courage to do it, can preserve that public virtue without which popular government is a sham and a mockery. A cynical, mercenary, demagogic press will produce in time a people as base as itself. The power to mould the future of the Republic will be in the hands of the journalists of future generations."

They have the controlling stake anyway. There's very little difference between the reality now and if they buy the remaining shares.

They just want it because they consider it theirs and because they're confident that it will be profitable.

Bent was not on pens for villa last year so you could probably give him another .5pts per game bringing him up to just behind rooney level with drogba on pts per game.

That said you would not expect berbatov and possibly carroll/odemwingie to provide the same returns per game as last year. For me he is probably only behind RVP, Rooney, Tevez, Torres (who had a poor pts per game also last season) and maybe Drogba in the potential highest scoring strikers next season.

At 10m he could be a bit too expensive though as he is not really a viable capt option imo due to his inconsistency.

Lescott was a one off, every year one fpl defender scores crazy points without any logical reasons (Lescott, Bos, GJ, Huth/Ridgwell?)
Milner would just need to play, and remember that half his goals were from PK
Barry was just about PK (and a few bps)

Haven't checked but ppg is more indicative. Lescott was always scoring goals in a strong defence for everton. Granted he only scored double figures once but that doesn't mean he was poor in other seasons. GJ too was regularly amongst the goals assists for pompey and then Liverpool.

Flipping a coin between Malouda and Torres. I think Torres will be excellent this season, but a nicely priced Malouda in midfield (he could have a very attacking role) would be too tempting to refuse.

who are people looking at as potential captain for gwk1

the teams with decent starts dont have the easiest first fixture so my plan is to start with a man city striker as captain for gwk1 then transfer him out for torres or some other chelsea striker after the first week

Tosey (if you're around) - would you start with Bent, RVP and Suarez up front, but at least have Silva (Capt) in your midfield for GW1, swapping Silva him for Lamps/Malouda in GW2 (as opposed to a Man City striker in GW1 as capt and changing him for Torres in GW2)?

Had something awsome called Karburger in SE Turkey when I was over there in May. Its a lamb shoulder, cooked in various stages with rice sown into the skin, then shredded over the rice with a tomato and chilie sauce. Beat the sht out of constant kebaps.

I made home-made mayonnaise. It's wierd. really weird. You start with ONE egg yolk, and that makes a whole pint of mayonnaise just by adding oil. (then you add lemon/vinegar etc after).

But it's just egg and oil, and then by adding them in a certain way, it emulsifies in a really complicated delicate way.

I would normally use 2 yolks plus some mustard and cayenne pepper. I am not masochistic enough to use a balloon whisk, a hand-held mixer does just a good a job. The art is not to add the oil too fast at the start otherwise it curdles.

Once you have tried it, you'll never want to eat that shit from a jar ever again!

    Stoke/Villa
    L'pool/Eve/Che/Ful/Ars

I don't think it's down to being slow.

It's that the clubs kept it to themselves and so the press didn't find out until quite recently.

I expect it to be the same bid, it just happened a couple of weeks ago and was rejected.

I hope they come back with the £25 mil offer though, which I think they will.

I guess we'll get told Nasri wants to leave but Wenger wants more money...

I think £20mil is a good offer though considering he has 1 year on his contract left

I get what you mean, but I think we could see Jones at DM a fair bit this season. Vidic doesn't struggle with injuries as much as Rio does, and Fergie won't have £18m worth of player on the bench.

He did it once, against Middlesbrough.

Wenger has always said he thinks Nasri is most effective in a wide role with licence to drift.

I don't know why you'd want United to continue with that silly system that got you so convincingly beaten in the CL final. Wouldn't you rather have Rooney up front on his own?

That silly system won 17 out of 18 games at home (albeit with different players occasionally) Away from home, agreed - it doesn't work. Any team would have gotten beaten convincingly in that CL final, it was shades of the 1st half at the emirates except they actually kept it up for 90mins and scored their chances against us.

Fair enough on the home games thing.

But yeah, Nasri isn't a deep-lying playmaker. He's quick and explosive. Much more effective higher up the pitch.

I'm sorry Daniel but while I too am eager for FPL to start, posting up here for some former player to give you some details or constantly asking when its starting, when:
          1. It will definitely start soon.
          2. NO ONE F**KING KNOWS!! is, in my mind, both pathetic and pitifull

Damo r u Rookie or something? I believe that FPl has contacts with the winner. They r discussing potential changes in the game. Last year there was info on here and its my right to post around here and to make it more interesting before the game starts. If u have problems just scroll.

you would think so. I cant see him breaking into the team ahead of vidic or ferdinand, but he will have the assurances from SAF that he will be a 1st team regular in a couple of years 🙂

any idea when the times of the first matches will be sorted? Is there usually a 12.45 match on the opening day?

Wasn't Spurs v Man City the 12.45 match last season? I'd guess there'll be an early afternoon game on the Sat on Sky, an evening game on ESPN, then a Sunday lunchtime and a Sunday 4pm game both on Sky.

We won't know for sure until Sky and ESPN choose their games.
