Martin Jol has made his first meaningful foray into the summer transfer market with the capture of John Arne Riise on a three-year deal from Roma. The move, for an undisclosed fee, sees the Norwegian return to the Premier League following a three year exile and Riise, having spent seven years at Liverpool, will bring plenty experience of England’s top-flight.

The transfer follows on the heels of Hungarian Csaba Somogyi’s move to Craven Cottage as back-up keeper to Mark Schwarzer and the new Fulham manager’s joy was apparent when unveiling his new addition to the ranks:

John Arne Riise is an experienced international left-back who will bring a number of qualities to our squad and provide more options for me. He is used to performing at the very highest level for both club and country, and is an accomplished player defensively, who can also contribute to our attacking play.

I am extremely happy that we’ve been able to add him to our squad, and believe that he will prove a valuable addition as we progress.

The Statistics

Riise rose through the youth ranks at Aalesund and played just one season in his homeland -scoring 5 goals in 25 appearances- before being snapped up by AS Monaco. He spent three seasons in France, but failed to properly establish himself under Claude Puel and played only 44 games, scoring 4 goals, before making his way to Anfield in the summer of 2001.

Riise’s seven campaigns at Liverpool included, of course, the Champions League win in 2005 and his lethal left-foot saw him grab 21 goals in 234 games for the Merseyside giants. As time progressed, Benitez’s tendency to favour Fabio Aurelio limited his game time and the Norwegian resultantly left these shores for Roma. Over the past three seasons, Riise has played 99 league games in Serie A, scoring 7 goals.

Last season saw him grab 5 assists, with only Francesco Totti- who picked up 8- managing more as the club finished sixth in Italy’s top flight. The club’s acquisition of highly-rated Sporting Gijon 21 year old left-back José Ángel this summer meant Riise was surplus to requirements and at the age of 30, should still have a few good years to offer the Cottagers.

The Prospects

The signing of Riise certainly backs up Jol’s promise to bring attacking football to the club this upcoming season. Fulham may have finished eighth last time round but they found the net just 49 times, with their game based more on defensive solidity under Hughes.

With just 43 goals conceded, Fulham had the joint-fourth best defence in the Premier League, with only the top three conceding less goals, and it’s worth noting that last season Brede Hangeland and Aaron Hughes -Fulham’s only first-choice defenders during Sparky’s tenure- ended as first and second for “Value” in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Hangeland started at 5.5 and racked up 154 points, whereas Hughes came in at 5.0 and picked up 129 points.

Just quite how much Jol’s brand of football may diminish Fulham’s defensive potential remains to be seen, though Riise’s threat going forward -similar to Hangeland- should see him balance out any drop in clean sheets and offer a Fantasy alternative to his compatriot at the back.

There is no way in holy hell that all 15 players will score you points next year. No... way... in... holy... hell.

As far as changing your team mid-week.... to be honest, I half-expect the FPL to allow in any rule which means people are more likely to log onto the site more often. And it is the way that other Fantasy Games have been operating.....

          I don't know about that.

Question...would you rather have a player get 2 points for starting a match or leave it be and they have to play 60 mins.?

I'd be happy with being a starter gets you 2... Darn annoying to lose a H2H just bc your player was subbed in 59th minute through injury.

what are poeple's thoughts on Ba for the new season? I'd imagine he will be the focal point of Newcastle's attack and believe he will get opportunities as they've signed well to date.

Hoping he'll be around the 6m mark for a cheap attacking option.

If he's 6m i'd rather look elsewhere. Would prefer him to come in at 5m or even at a stretch 5.5m

Then there is his injury troubles. However he certainly has the fixtures to warrant selection.

Injuries and price aside he might be worth keeping an eye on. He had an attempt on goal every 26 mins according to the stats. There actually arent many topping that. Sturridge was on 21 mins and RVP something stupid like 9 mins!

I'm definitely considering Ba as my back-up striker. Main pair potentially Torres (if pre-season form holds up, may be a little cheaper than last season) and Suarez/Carroll depending again on form. I always like to be a little more risky with my strikers than my mid & defence. Never had Rooney or Drogba.

Nah, I usually go strong midfield/defence to compensate...

Generally do ok, the year after the World Cup I refused to put Ronaldo in and that cost me big time, overall score ok but position much lower! Last year was another wipe-out for me as well, tried playing Metro game more and lost focus for a few months. This year definitely aiming for top 10,000 again!

          Last 5 season's scores:

          2006/07 1817 99,883
          2007/08 1918 317,155

I hope they take our captains this season.

Most of the time its just your captain vs your rivals captain pretty much.

If you choose the wrong player and he chooses the right one they win the week unless one of your differentials scores a hattrick or something. It makes it well boring.

It would also mean that not everybody would have Lampard/Fabregas/Tevez etc out of fear that a rival will have them and captain them and get like 40 points from one player

Guys, there is a team of software developers working frantically to get everything working for us. They can't give us a date because they don't know when they're going to have all the bugs ironed out. You can't just set a date and launch something like this if its full of bugs... It will be ready when its ready and no sooner.

Surprised people are still going for Sessegnon. Wasn't he only up front because all of the other strikers were injured?

"Sessegnon showed toward the back end of the season, for me his best position is in and off the front - he got three goals in four games at the end and we started to see his best position," Bruce added.

He's definitely in my thoughts if he's listed as a midfielder.

Common misconception that footballers are also fans. In cases where they grow up near a team, or only play for one club, fair enough. But Vieira is french, he realistically has no allegiance to either team, it's a job and he'll go where he gets the best wage.

Im considering Lampard again this season. He normally has a great season, and although ddint start very well at all, his finish to the season was awesome. Do you think it is worth a punt (as I guess he will be one of the highest priced midfielders again), because I also normally have him as my captain?
Chelsea have a pretty good start to the season also.

    Thoughts everyone.

depends on the formation. If Lampard has room to run into the box then he is tempting. If he hangs back a bit then he will merely be the guy who passes to the guy who makes the assist.

Could be interesting to see how some of the traditional big players get on after a summer with no internationals. Obviously it will be important to keep an eye on preseason, but I can't imagine him being out of Vilas Boas' plans and he represents an easy way to cover Chelsea.

Interested to see if Gerrard offers any value, too.

Is there a way to filter the ticker so that you can chose specific game weeks for instance GW1 - GW6 on diffuculty taking all fixtures during that time period into consideration?

On the members ticker on the front page you just click on the box below the ticker 'Sort by difficulty'. It is already set up for gw1-6 so thats it.

You have already started ... 😉

            ELEGY FOR OWEN HARGREAVES ...

Owen Hargreaves he trains real hard:
It’s just that – well, his knees are scarred …

Ignore the knees and listen to the hype -

C’mon now, get his agent on Skype!
            The Parker deal is dead,

            And Clattermole’s on red -
So let your fingers do the walking,

And get his agent talking …
            Now, Owen’s weekly pay -

            Well, what shall we say?
            For every ninety minutes run,

            Thats 50k we’ve done ...
For your juniors with wet ears,

All trembly with their fears …
            Can learn from his experience,

While your gates gain in pounds and pence!
Don’t bore me with manager’s timidity,

Lift your team out of mediocrity …
Remember all the kits you’ll sell,

AND GIVE HIS AGENT A QUICK BELL!!!

Wifi is fine- i'm on it now! reception shouldn't be an issue, just make sure you use the right network provider and check with someone else's phone who is on the network you're thinking of choosing. unfortunately i live in a f*cking valley so signal is always an issue... 😕

Only minor quibble is the fact i can't keep the screen horizontal all the time (the home page doesn't rotate). Apart from that it's an excellent piece of technology! :p

Well not much to report from the New England Revolution v Man United game last night at Gilette Stadium, only that it was quite painful to have an American chap behind me trash talk the Revolution because he was a "Man U" fan, because they were the best "pro team in the world" (I corrected him on this), and also because they had won the "pro league in England", wally.

So, Young played on the left (switching with Nani briefly to play on the right) and largely did little quite honestly, he had at least two peach crosses, one of which could have been converted by Rooney, so delivery good, not much else.

Rooney was very good, and looks to be continuing his upward cycle of form coming into the season, he passed very well, linked with Berbatov quite effectively two or three times, and also had a nice dipping header just miss the target in the first half. Rooney and Berbatov were both substituted at half time for Macheda and Owen, who had a major impact on the game.

Owen came on and cooly slotted a lovely weighted pass from Carrick past the Revolution keeper to put United one up on the night. Michael Carrick later assisted Macheda for one of his two goals, and was generally untested in midfield with the weak Revolution midfield.

Macheda was very sharp from the get go and was very effective on the long ball, and finished two chances expertly, in general he was the most impressive player on the night and was awarded the man of the match by the home side.

Nani was middling to be honest, didn't have to do much, didn't shoot at all which I thought was very odd for him, and bar some magic feet in the latter stages of the game to lay a nicely weighted pass off to Giggs, was nothing to write home about.

Park got the fourth and final goal, and continues to look like he has really been working on his finishing, a stunning little flick in the box from Giggs put Park one on one with the keeper, which he dummied first, and then cooly chipped over the keeper.

On the night, United played 4-4-2, they did seem to lack a certain cutting edge up front until Owen and Macheda came on strangely enough. Evans and Vidic were untested in the first half really, and Ferdindand (who replaced Vidic) had little to do in the second half either. Revolution's goal came from a wickedly deflected free kick, and flattered the scoreline.

So, all you would expect from a pre-season match, 70% work rate from most players, Fabio and Rafael looked at home at left back and right back, Anderson had a lot of the ball but was generally muted in attack.

Hope I am not repeating something else on here!

thanks for that...very interesting. Be good to see how the friendlies develop from now until the comm shield. I feel I have to have at least one man utd player and posts like this are a great help.

I already know that Young is not on my radar and this and I suspect other reports will cement that view.

I may just go with a defender. Rooney still seems the safest for/mid option. If RVp gets injured in preseason I can see the spud fella sneak his way upstairs into my team, leave a £50 on its dressing table and leave relieved and red faced after spraying his goals and assists across the room.

I watched it myself, nice write up!
Anderson was interesting, he seemed to try and make less probing runs and sit back and find the passes, a shift in mentality now that scholes is gone? or coming to terms with his first game fitness wise? hard to know! Hopefully its the latter, as its his running at defences that make him ooze potential!

Great game from Kiko, considering he was probably 6th striker in pecking order b4 that game its a real conundrum for fergie, is carling cup enuf for him?

As I was saying on here last night, it's foolish to think even remotely short term when you're planning your goalkeepers, in particular because you normally have to do two transfers to change them, as they operate as such a double act.

Prediction: if you get a Wolves and Wigan pairing, you'll be forced into using your on goalkeepers wildcard after week 12. You have to get a pairing that you think MIGHT last you until the Januray wildcard.

12 weeks is quite long term in fantasy football imo, so much can change, & often does, in a short space of time. I've done ok the last couple of seasons so I'll just carry on being foolish I guess 😉 Nice rank btw
