Martin Jol has made his first meaningful foray into the summer transfer market with the capture of John Arne Riise on a three-year deal from Roma. The move, for an undisclosed fee, sees the Norwegian return to the Premier League following a three year exile and Riise, having spent seven years at Liverpool, will bring plenty experience of England’s top-flight.

The transfer follows on the heels of Hungarian Csaba Somogyi’s move to Craven Cottage as back-up keeper to Mark Schwarzer and the new Fulham manager’s joy was apparent when unveiling his new addition to the ranks:

John Arne Riise is an experienced international left-back who will bring a number of qualities to our squad and provide more options for me. He is used to performing at the very highest level for both club and country, and is an accomplished player defensively, who can also contribute to our attacking play.

I am extremely happy that we’ve been able to add him to our squad, and believe that he will prove a valuable addition as we progress.

The Statistics

Riise rose through the youth ranks at Aalesund and played just one season in his homeland -scoring 5 goals in 25 appearances- before being snapped up by AS Monaco. He spent three seasons in France, but failed to properly establish himself under Claude Puel and played only 44 games, scoring 4 goals, before making his way to Anfield in the summer of 2001.

Riise’s seven campaigns at Liverpool included, of course, the Champions League win in 2005 and his lethal left-foot saw him grab 21 goals in 234 games for the Merseyside giants. As time progressed, Benitez’s tendency to favour Fabio Aurelio limited his game time and the Norwegian resultantly left these shores for Roma. Over the past three seasons, Riise has played 99 league games in Serie A, scoring 7 goals.

Last season saw him grab 5 assists, with only Francesco Totti- who picked up 8- managing more as the club finished sixth in Italy’s top flight. The club’s acquisition of highly-rated Sporting Gijon 21 year old left-back José Ãngel this summer meant Riise was surplus to requirements and at the age of 30, should still have a few good years to offer the Cottagers.

The Prospects

The signing of Riise certainly backs up Jol’s promise to bring attacking football to the club this upcoming season. Fulham may have finished eighth last time round but they found the net just 49 times, with their game based more on defensive solidity under Hughes.

With just 43 goals conceded, Fulham had the joint-fourth best defence in the Premier League, with only the top three conceding less goals, and it’s worth noting that last season Brede Hangeland and Aaron Hughes -Fulham’s only first-choice defenders during Sparky’s tenure- ended as first and second for “Value†in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Hangeland started at 5.5 and racked up 154 points, whereas Hughes came in at 5.0 and picked up 129 points.

Just quite how much Jol’s brand of football may diminish Fulham’s defensive potential remains to be seen, though Riise’s threat going forward -similar to Hangeland- should see him balance out any drop in clean sheets and offer a Fantasy alternative to his compatriot at the back.

    To the Coy Masters of FPL Towers
    by (apologies, Andrew Marvell) Doosra

Had we but world enough, and time,

    This coyness, FPL, were no crime.

We would sit down and think which side

    To select to secure our player's pride;

    Thou by the Indian Ganges' side

Shouldst strikers place; I by the tide

Of Humber, goalies could rotate. I would

Play you ten years before the Flood;

    And you might, if you please, choose
    Boners, ‘till the conversion of the Jews.

    My fledgling squad should grow

    Vaster than empires, and more slow.

An hundred years should go to praise

    My midfield, and on the defence to gaze;

    Two hundred to adore each striker,

    But thirty thousand to the bench formica;

An age at least to all the watchlist,

    And the last age to captain Lamps first.

    For, FPL, you deserve this state,

    Nor would I play at a lower rate.

... But at my back I always hear

    Time's winged chariot hurrying near;

And yonder all before us lie

    Deserts of vast eternity.

    Your interest shall no more be found,

    Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound

    My many transfers; then by worms shall it be marred -

That long preserved and treasured wild card!

And your first place turn to dust,

    And into ashes all my lust.

The grave's a fine and private rest,

    But none I think do there invest.

        It's not us they need to worry about (as we're all FPL addicts who are prepared to wait)...
        It's the more casual players who right now are setting up office fantasy football leagues across the country, and using Metro, Daily Mail, Sun Dream Team etc or any of the other free alternatives rather than FPL.

    Right as FPL is not open just yet and im leaving work in under an hour until September, I have scouted out a few poptential players and thus compiled a shortlist.

    Goalkeeprs

    Villa keeper & either Norwich keerper or Schwartzer

    Defenders

    Cole, Baines, Kompany, Gorkks, MArtin, Hutton (if at villa), Gibbs, Walker (if not at spurs), Riise, Collins, Distin, Samba

    Midfielders

    Taarabt, Sinclair, Malouda, Lampard, Ben Arfa, Dempsey, Cahill, Nzog, Wallcott, Girvinho (if midfielder),Alrighton, Watson, Silva, Yaya

    Forwards

    Bent, Torres, Balotelli, Zamora, Beckford, RVP, Ba, Dzecko, Rodellega

    I know tranfers and prices will probably change this but I need to have something to go on. What do you's think? anyone I should add?

            Wilshire, particularly if Fab goes. I see the boy becoming an increasing assist force in FPL, maybe for goals too, and he's unlikely to cost more than £6.5-7m.

        Suarez looks to be the type of player to pull in all sorts of BPs and Assists than Carroll, though.

        Henderson is a surprisingly good crosser (1:30 is a particular favourite):

            They do if they bang in tons of goals, get transferred in during the season by about 90% of players, get in the England set up and move to a much better team that look good for the new season. 8.0 absolute minimum.

              I agree with the 8.0. But name me a single players who's starting rpcie has ever gone up by £4.0m.

              The FPL slowly increase players prices if they perform for a number of years; that's the way you get a big price, if you started off at 5.

                  And exactly right, by the way. From 5.5 to 9.0. The pedant in me says that it's only 3.5, but it's still the highest I've seen around.

            his starting price last season last season has nothing to do with it. He made a mockery of his price last season and he's now at liverpool. No chance he'll be under 8.0. 9.0 is my guess with suarez 11.0.

                I have absolutely no idea, it's not a case of proving you wrong. Last year's price is entirely irrelevant. What is relevant is last year's performance, his likelihood of being in the team every week, the team he now plays for and his ability to generate points. And on all those counts he is right up there with probably all strikers outside of the very top ones.

                  I'm afraid you are describing the system as you would like it, not as it is. It is very clear that players prices are related to their starting prices the previous year.

                  I will stick my neck out and say that I think 8.0, and no more than 8.5.

                    No relation at all. Players are priced based on their scoring potential. Last season's price is irrelevant.

                    That's only because most players don't have the kind of trajectory in a season that Carroll had.

                    Far more important than previous year's price is the player's current club. That's why you get Man U squad members who'll barely get 1 minute on the pitch priced higher than players from promoted clubs.

                    You are totally wrong. It's simply not often a very cheap player has a massive impact - hence it's rare for a player to jump massively in price.

                    They don't sit down when setting the prices and say "..well Mr X scored 500 points last year and has been transferred from Norwich to Man Utd, where he will start every game and hammer in goals and assists left right and centre...now he was 4.5m last year, so what shall we say this year....6.5m? Well we can't put him any higher because he was only 4.5m last year.."

                    I think you're going to be shocked at the prices of the players when they are released.

                    My gut feeling is that each year, the FPL look at the previous starting price and add or subtract a certain amount depending on how the player did last year and how their pospects look for this year. (The Ireland example suggests the limit is 3.5 million.) I just think they're too lazy to price every player from scratch every year, and the prices do seem to work that way.

                    I will point out that it is you guys who are saying that something which has never happenned before will happen this year. We may have reached the point of disagreement though, so I'll end it there. It was fun talking about it, so I hope no hard feelings. And MarknLard, we must stop meeting like this. 🙂

                    Just in case Jack Bauer or MarknLard are stil here, or anyone who thinks that the FPL decide prices without taking account of starting prices from the previous season, I did a bit of analysis. Here are Clint Dempsey’s stats for a couple of seasons:

                    2007/08: £4.5m Played 2671 minutes. 115 points.
                    2008/09: £5.5m Played 2594 minutes. 126 points.
                    2009/10: £6.5m Played 2391 minutes. 120 points.
                    And then in 2010/11 he was priced at 7.0.

                    Each year Dempsey played for the same club, in the same position; and in roughly the same number of on-field minutes, he scored roughly the same number of points.

                    But his price keeps going up, even though at a certain stage he is doing no better than he did the previous year, and no other factor has changed to suggest that he is a better option. He didn’t move clubs, swap positions, or perform any better in Fantasy terms.

                    My conclusion from this is every year he did well, the FPL added another 1.0 million onto his starting price, even though he hadn’t proved himself to be any better than he did the year before. Therefore if you do well, you keep going up from your previous starting price, even if you haven’t improved.

                    Can you explain the steady rise according to your method? Your theory would suggest that the FPL must have considered Dempsey empirically a better option each year? But why would they?

                    Quick reply as I'm leaving...

                    With Carroll, we're talking about a player who went from being mainly unknown (those of us who watched the Championship knew who he was) at a newly promoted club to being owned by about 50% of players, having a successful season, getting into the England team and becoming the most expensive British player ever moving to a famous club who will challenge for the top 4.

                    Your example is a player who stayed at the same club for a few seasons and had been initially underpriced but became a staple FF player.

                    No one else is trying to put forward methods or theories, only you, and no one else seems to agree with it.

    To afford the stars in our 1st team we generally have to unearth a good bargain or 2 from the unproven promoted/imports. It's like a lottery, for every Adam, Odemwingie or Carroll there's a Dorrans, Boselli or Mcshefferey. I pretty much always back the wrong ones and have to mess around wasting transfers.
    I think the mistake I make is comparing their talent, stats, team & fixtures and that's it. I've noticed the common factor with the ones that succeed in the top flight is their mental strengths. Things like determination, hunger, work rate, leadership etc. and no illusions of grandeur.
    Imo these are the most important things to consider when predicting whether championship stars will thrive or flop in the prem. I want to put this out there because I barely ever get the chance to watch the championship over so all I have is what I read about the players and footage online etc.
    With that in mind what's your thoughts on Holt, sinclair & taarabt?
    How will Holt go if he has to feed of scraps?
    Swansea held a ridiculous amount of possession but that won't be the same in the prem, does sinclair have the hunger and determination to bust his ass when his team is getting dominated?
    My theory tells me taarabt will struggle the most. From what I hear he's a lazy primadona that thinks he's the beez knees. How will he cope with barely getting a touch for long periods and then having no support when he does get the ball? Or is he a special case where his talent is great enough to succeed without without the right mentality?
    Long post sorry but you guys have a much better knowledge of these players than me so feedback would be appreciated.

      No need to apologise for the long post - insightful.

      My opinions below:

      Sinclair - Swansea will not score many goals but Sinclair takes their penalties. This is a massive factor for me and if he is down as a midfielder for 5.0 - 5.5m he is top value as he creates as many as he scores.

      Taarabt - On all set pieces for QPR who play open, expansive football. Most of what they do well goes through Taarabt and if he stays, he is likely to be good value.

      Holt - Lots of goals in the lower leagues but with the exception of DJ Campbell, not many strikers spring to mind who adapt well to the PL. Who starts up front for Norwich anyway? They have Simeon Jackson, James Vaughan and Morrison who they signed from Millwall as well as Holt. I could be wrong, but I don't even know if Norwich can afford to play 4-4-2 in the PL.

      To conclude, I like the look of Taarabt and Sinclair but am stearing clear of Holt.

      For me, what determines how well promoted players do for FF is the type of football their teams play. Carroll was a success because Newcastle attack and attack (likewise with Adam at Blackpool).

      As I say, just my personal opinions

      Not very scientific but my memory of Holt over the past two seasons (a lot of my family are Norwich supporters so I always keep an eye on scores) was a fair amount of late goals… that never say die attitude and keep going until the end. You know, score a goal to make it 1-3 down in the 80th minute and grab the ball to run back… that’s not a consolation goal, it’s the start of the comeback.

      He might not get many chances in the Premiership but I think he’ll always be working and won’t be one to give up.

    Interesting, but the same attacking point could have been levelled at previous West Brom promotion teams (not last season particularly), but they consistently failed to live with the higher level. I think Charlie Adam was an absolute one-off and will not be expecting to find anyone from the 3 promoted teams to go near his returns. Pens and set pieces are, of course, a big factor, but I've watched taarabt a few times in pre-season and cup Spurs games and he is a massive sulker and I'd struggle to fit him in if he's priced anywhere near £7m, which he probably will be.

      I've never seen a promoted player priced over 6.0 and they're usually 5.5 max. Never know though. Adam & dorrans were the dominant mids in the championship that season but it was dorrans that was the more hyped of the 2. With the benefit of hindsight we can see adam was much better equipped for the jump thanks to his maturity, hunger, drive and leadership. So that's my thinking when looking at these 3 rather than their just goals, assists, technique etc.

        yes but if they took £35m for Fabs and £25m for Nasri they could go out and spend that on 2 world class replacements. If Wenger keeps on with his arrogant, stubborrn attitude at least one of them will leave with little time for them to get a replacement.

      This is excellent news for football (and i am a Spurs fan). It is time teams started holding their players to contract, instead of these prima donnas holding them to ransom. If you sign a contract then you are their player for the duration - no whining or bitching. Time these players learned that lesson.

        rubbish, contracts are broken all the time. Fact of Life.

        Do you not think that spurs have bought players from smaller clubs that are in contract?

          Of course that doesn't mean it is on. The weight needs to come back into these contracts - that is the point of having one.

            The point of contracts is for clubs to say 'you can have him, but we want a transfer fee'. Very rare for a club to choose to keep a player until the end of his contract and let him move upwards. Most are mortified if they know a player is going to let his run out.

            I'd go as far as saying that a loyal player DOESN'T let his contract run out and leave.

                what people also have to remember is that if anyone is offered to double their wages they would be off in a flash! A footballers career can be very short so players want to win as much as possible and earn as much as possible. dont know why we are surprised when players want to leave?

                Why would Nasri or Modric want to stay at their clubs when a bigger club comes in and offers them more money and a better chance of winning things?

    anyone watching copa america on espn last night? in between matches they had a press pass edpisode and there was an interview with alex ferguson about de gea and he said that he went to watch petr cech when he was 19 at rennes and thought he was too young. that summer chelsea bought him and the rest is history. anyway he was basically saying sometimes you have to take the risk on a young keeper and he's confident in de gea.

      Interesting. The best ones have it at a young age (Casillas), but it goes against all conventional keeper wisdom.

        see shaka hislop wasn't convinced? kind of agree. the mystical attribute that is presence can be a big thing for keepers imo, basically size and commanding your area. de gea definitely doesn't look commanding, more casillas like which is great but maybe not ideal for the premier league?

          Not sure if this is the point you're making about being commanding, but keepers don't tend to come for crosses in the way they used to. It's more about trusting the defenders to clear and then shot-stopping nowadays.

      This is brinkmanship on brinkmanship - who blinks first, Nasri or Wenger? My money would be on Nasri signing a new deal, perhaps a little under the alleged £110k a week he's been after, but re-signs all the same. Why would any team pay £20m+ for a player in his final year? It makes zero economic sense.

          Yes, but even MC and Chelski will be forced to play by the financial fair play rules in future, and dubious stadium sponsorship deals won't cut much ice with Platini's socialist football agenda.

      A mute man walks into a chemist. To signal that he wants to buy a toothbrush he goes to the person working there and signals brushing his teeth with his hands

      The man understands what he wants and gives him a toothbrush
      Next a blind man enters and wants to buy a pair of sunglasses
      how would he signal this to the man?

      A Toxteth hamper is a large, hollowed out, portable CD/record box used by DJs. To outward appearances, it seems identical to a regular record box, but when opened, it has a faux top which can be removed to reveal secreted items (usually food, drugs, or spirits) and up to 5 copies of recent Now that's What I Call Music.

                  They did but you have to admit United were a bit fortunate especially with their shocking away form. We did have a great run in the CL though but came up short against an amazing Barca team. So if we want to go further, we need a world class player like Sneijder to have a shot at the CL title.

        I'm estimating that there is a set amount of points per price that players need to meet.

        Say 7.0 = 120pts
        8.0 = 140pts
        9.0 = 160pts
        10.0 = 180pts
        11.0 = 200pts
        12.0 = 220pts
        13.0 = 240pts
        14.0 = 260pts

        That looks about right at a (very) rough guess. So if people are over their target they increase by 1m, until it gets to where it needs to be

            It does make sense, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

            Write down a few numbers now while they're still there, (mainly players who have under/overperformed massively) and we'll see.

              It'll be interesting to see how Adam is priced then. Last season he started at 5.0 and ended up at 6.0 having scored a whopping 192 points. Add in his move to Liverpool and what do you get?

                This whole argument started because I claimed that the FPL don't increase players' prices by £4.0m in a single year. £3.5m is the maximum on record, we believe, for Stephen Ireland after his mental year at City, so I think the maximum that Adam and Carroll can be is 8.5 each.

                Then again, Ireland only posted 160 points that year, and he didn't have a club switch to deal with, so maybe that's where my theory falls down. Adam started off lower, and posted 30 points more. Hmmmm.

                  I think my issue, in a (big) nutshell, is this.

                  3.5m is an arbitrary figure, yet you seem to have decided that FPL don't go any higher than that, as if it's in their internal rule book and can't be broken, which is a huge leap to make. 3.5m just happens to be the biggest jump we can all think of. Or it may just happen to have been the biggest one they've ever had. It's not some top end that can't ever be breached just because you decide it is!

                  Again to put things very simply, as far as I'm concerned if Ireland had been 4.5m in the first year, then he still would've been 9m in the second year - you seem to have decided that 3.5m is the biggest increase they can possibly do and he therefore would only have been 8m. Which to me makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but we will see very soon I suppose!

        It s a realiability thing.

        Initial price is meaningless, as he would have been an unknown quantitiy.

        2nd season reflects his good score on the basis that it could have been a one off

        3rd season is a more accurate reflection of his potential as he''s a proven point scorer

        Then last season he's even more highly thought of so he goes up another 0.5m

        Simples

        • 15 Years

        We could do this… to make it the same for each year we could work out how many points he would have got had he played the full 3420 minutes each season (crude, but helps if we are working from the same number of minutes):

        07/08 – 147 points – 4.5 million
        08/09 – 166 points – 5.5 million
        09/10 – 172 points – 6.5 million

        Looking at that you might say his score had levelled out so if they felt 6.5 was fair at the start of 09/10 it would still be fair at the start of 2010/11. But you could also say that Fulham as a more established team were likely to be a stronger team in 10/11 and as a consistent and established player Dempsey would benefit from that. Therefore the 0.5 increase is justified.

        If I worked at FPL that might be how I'd justify it.
