The speed at which a certain Mr Torres went from irreplaceable to “Fernando who?” in the eyes of Liverpool fans can mainly be attributed to the displays of Luis Suarez. Arriving at Anfield just as El Niño headed south to Chelsea on the final day of the January transfer window, Suarez wasted little time in establishing himself as an Anfield favourite with a series of scintillating performances in the second half of the season.

Coming off the subs bench for his debut at home to Stoke, Suarez grabbed a goal in a 28 minute cameo that, despite a lack of match-fitness, hinted at what was to come. After missing out on an away trip to Chelsea the following week, Suarez started the final twelve games of the season for Kenny Dalglish’s side, missing only eight minutes of action from gameweek 27 till the end of the campaign.

A virtuoso display in Liverpool’s 3-1 home win over Man United in Gameweek 29 particularly caught the eye as Suraez tormented the eventual champions on his way to picking up 2 assists and 2 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points for a 10 point haul haul that saw him resultantly leap onto many a Fantasy Watchlist.

Whether he partnered Dirk Kuyt or Andy Carroll upfront, his menace to opposition defences saw the Uruguayan finish the season with 68 FPL points from thirteen appearances, averaging over five points per game as Liverpool just missed out on a place in the Europa League.

Key Factors

  • Suarez’s game is clearly suited to scoring highly with the Bonus judges. A look at his stats in our Members Area illustrates just how influential he is for Liverpool and it reflects in the 14 Bonus points awarded over seven of his twelve starts. At home, in particular, Suarez stood out, picking up Bonus in five of his six Anfield starts.

  • Liverpool’s form under Kenny Dalglish gives definite cause for optimism. Prior to his January arrival, the club’s record under Roy Hodgson read (P20, W7, D4, L9 25pts) and, despite one point from his first two games in charge, Dalglish led the club to (P18, W10, D3, L5, 33pts) with a run of games from gameweek 24 to 36 that saw them win ten and draw two of their fourteen games. Under King Kenny, they beat Man City and Man United at home, while winning at Chelsea and drawing away to Arsenal.

  • Liverpool have a kind run of home games to start off the season (SUN, BOL, WOL, MUN, NOR, SWA) with only the Man United clash looking tricky on paper. Having won the corresponding fixture last season, Dalglish’s men will hold no fear going into the game. Currently starring in Copa America 2011, Suarez may end up playing late into July but has moved to dismiss fears of burn-out, assuring Liverpool fans he’ll be fit and ready for the new season.

  • With just half a Premier League season under his belt, it seems unlikely Suarez will be priced in the same bracket as more proven top-flight forwards such as Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and -despite the uncertainty over playing time- Chelsea pair Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres. While the above-mentioned quartet should come in around 11.0-12.0, Suarez looks more likely to be around the 10.0 mark and will, more than likely, not even be the highest priced player from Liverpool, with Steven Gerrard still leading the way there.

  • Liverpool’s sixth place finish last season may prove to be a blessing in disguise for their league aspirations this coming campaign. With no European football to clog up the fixture calendar, Dalglish’s side can fully focus on the Premier League, meaning less possibility of rotation and more chance of his squad being fresher from one gameweek to the next, in comparison to their top-flight rivals.

    Good article Sir P

Looks like Andy Carrol may be a better choice for the start of the season, than Suarez. The longer Uruguay are in the Copa America, the more chances of Suarez being rested early on

If FFS came out officially and said they didnt have a dickie bird about when it was opening, and the reasons why they couldnt give an answer (theyre all obvious), and how it couldnt possibly know when it was starting, we would at least accept it. It would give regular visitors proper answers to pass onto people who bleat "when does it start?!".

Mark did say something along those lines on Saturday. There's technical issues and even FPL don't know when it will launch...just they want to as soon as.

I too don't actually mind the lateness compared to the lack of information, but I went away happy on Sat that Mark had kept us informed of what he knows. He added that he didn;t see much point in constant updates saying "we don't know when it will launch" and I kinda agree.

It looks like a big site redesign for FPL not just the game and that is going to involve some teething issues.

The majority of us to accept it. It is only the 'are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet' brigade that don't.

People should just learn to have some patience and maybe in the meantime make thoughtful contributions to posts rather than clog up the boards with all this childishness

What's he supposed to do? He's stated a few times that they are having problems with the new site and that we'll be happy with the changes when it comes out in the near future. I know we're frustrated but there's time and hopefully they'll get all the bugs out now and not experience problems during the season.

I do think that the FPL have dropped the ball this year because if memory serves me, we had some notice in the past about upcoming changes to the game and we have had nothing this summer. Lack of information leads to frustration...

There is really nothing we can tell you. There are some technical issues which they are addressing but knowing the software industry very well, the backlash in releasing something before it's ready is far worse than a delay.
      We understand the frustration.

see F1 2010 from Codemasters for a perfect example of a rushed release. good game ruined by awful bugs. leading a race with mandatory pitstops, i pit, rest of the field don't. I come in about 16th. On the rare occasions the rest of the field did pit, my pit crew helpfully held me in the pits whilst the whole field streamed past. they eventually released a patch but the backlash was hideous.

I had him in the last 2, but it was due to the fact that Liv had intentions not to play Europa league and I think it was on purpose. I know its a tough acquisition, but I had that impresion. Now they will be in a full gear.

Regarding his fitness after the WC he played for Ajax excellent.

Cole has stated himself he expects to be rotated more this year (although will prob play 90% of fixtures he could miss some key ones). Also he had a very average year in terms of attack and needs to do a lot better.

What looks like an obvious punt on Bent from the off, given fixtures, I'm starting to wonder who will create for him with Ash/Downing gone. that's 20 assists combined last season and I'm not convinced by Albrighton. Villa sign N'Zog and things will be looking up but if not, Bent doesn't make many goals for himself.

And in the same vein, will Van Persie will over-priced without a Fab to supply him? There's a lot of known unknowns at the Arse at present; Woolcott, Gervinho, Nasri, Wilshire, Ramsey, Arse-shavin. Tough calls on the Gooners this season, I say.

I'm pretty sure that Villa will find an extra million and bring in NZog soon. The problem I have is do I want both Bent and NZog on my team?

Agree Frazek, he needs a decent supply fizzing in because he doesn't put them away every time. Bent doesn't get much bonus either, often not unless he scores a couple.

With decent service Bent could have a 15+ goal season.

I'll probably go for Bent from the off, but with McLeish in charge and Downing and Young gone it's putting me off a bit.

Just had an email from a guy that played in the same league as me for the old times play the game game. He says that a lot of the people who used to play that game now play this one:

anyone had any experience with this game? Is it any good?

    Hi all

When the new FPL starts (expected soon?) at what point do player price rises and falls come into play?

Is it straight away? Or only once season begins?

    Thanks

In previous seasons the prices have always been fixed until the season starts. I would say that's 99% likely to be the case again this time.

A)Mid-jul...oh 😉 Nobody knows on here (posters anyway) but I would of thought it would be up in the next 10 days at the very latest.

B)Pretty sure it's just when the season starts.

    NERD ALERT
Wow, not only content with the new site FFScout breaks linguistic grounds with 'resultantly'.
It is a real word (adverbial inflection of resultant) but I've never seen it used before. 😛

    Early draft without knowing prices.
    Given Begovic 9.5m
    Risse, R Johnson, Baines, 17.5m
Young, Silva, OHara, Zog (Villa?), Adam 37m
    Bent, RVP, Odim 26m
    93m
Leaves 10m for 2 defenders, or maybe VDV if fit?

Won't be able to afford it and why would you want Young (dodgy fixtures not guaranteed to start) and Adam (will be overpriced and not guaranteed to start).

Biggest waste of time I've seen since I bothered to reply. 😛

Seriously though, not much point until prices come out. Other than that I would reconsider at least Young (rotation-risk) and Adam (rotation risk, not guaranteed to take set pieces).
Why all the Wolves love (Johnson & O'Hara) their fixtures arent great and they are pretty crap to be fair.

Firstly your prices make that add up to 90m. Secondly they will still probably be more expensive than you think. I estimate the following prices for your players.
      GKs - 10.5
      Def: 17.5
      Mid: 38
      Att: 28m

      94m

Defenders and Midfielders look about right price to me but GKs and Strikers low

    My guesses:

    GKs: Given 5.5, Bego 5.0 = 10.5
    Str: Bent 9.5, RVP 12.0, Odem 8.0 = 29.5

been checking in here for a little while now, trying to satisfy the FPL itch!! I am hoping Riise will be a bargain. Expecting a few left foot rockets from him and Fulham have decent enough fixtures early doors.

Suarez and Carroll may well be the premierships best striking partnership this season. Chuck Kuyt in there and with Adam and Downing providing ammunition i think the reds are big contenders this year!

Too many contenders, add in Maxi Gerrard Henderson et al, and there are too many rotation risks, speaking in fantasy terms of course, it's great for liverpool!
