The speed at which a certain Mr Torres went from irreplaceable to “Fernando who?” in the eyes of Liverpool fans can mainly be attributed to the displays of Luis Suarez. Arriving at Anfield just as El Niño headed south to Chelsea on the final day of the January transfer window, Suarez wasted little time in establishing himself as an Anfield favourite with a series of scintillating performances in the second half of the season.

Coming off the subs bench for his debut at home to Stoke, Suarez grabbed a goal in a 28 minute cameo that, despite a lack of match-fitness, hinted at what was to come. After missing out on an away trip to Chelsea the following week, Suarez started the final twelve games of the season for Kenny Dalglish’s side, missing only eight minutes of action from gameweek 27 till the end of the campaign.

A virtuoso display in Liverpool’s 3-1 home win over Man United in Gameweek 29 particularly caught the eye as Suraez tormented the eventual champions on his way to picking up 2 assists and 2 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points for a 10 point haul haul that saw him resultantly leap onto many a Fantasy Watchlist.

Whether he partnered Dirk Kuyt or Andy Carroll upfront, his menace to opposition defences saw the Uruguayan finish the season with 68 FPL points from thirteen appearances, averaging over five points per game as Liverpool just missed out on a place in the Europa League.

Key Factors

  • Suarez’s game is clearly suited to scoring highly with the Bonus judges. A look at his stats in our Members Area illustrates just how influential he is for Liverpool and it reflects in the 14 Bonus points awarded over seven of his twelve starts. At home, in particular, Suarez stood out, picking up Bonus in five of his six Anfield starts.

  • Liverpool’s form under Kenny Dalglish gives definite cause for optimism. Prior to his January arrival, the club’s record under Roy Hodgson read (P20, W7, D4, L9 25pts) and, despite one point from his first two games in charge, Dalglish led the club to (P18, W10, D3, L5, 33pts) with a run of games from gameweek 24 to 36 that saw them win ten and draw two of their fourteen games. Under King Kenny, they beat Man City and Man United at home, while winning at Chelsea and drawing away to Arsenal.

  • Liverpool have a kind run of home games to start off the season (SUN, BOL, WOL, MUN, NOR, SWA) with only the Man United clash looking tricky on paper. Having won the corresponding fixture last season, Dalglish’s men will hold no fear going into the game. Currently starring in Copa America 2011, Suarez may end up playing late into July but has moved to dismiss fears of burn-out, assuring Liverpool fans he’ll be fit and ready for the new season.

  • With just half a Premier League season under his belt, it seems unlikely Suarez will be priced in the same bracket as more proven top-flight forwards such as Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and -despite the uncertainty over playing time- Chelsea pair Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres. While the above-mentioned quartet should come in around 11.0-12.0, Suarez looks more likely to be around the 10.0 mark and will, more than likely, not even be the highest priced player from Liverpool, with Steven Gerrard still leading the way there.

  • Liverpool’s sixth place finish last season may prove to be a blessing in disguise for their league aspirations this coming campaign. With no European football to clog up the fixture calendar, Dalglish’s side can fully focus on the Premier League, meaning less possibility of rotation and more chance of his squad being fresher from one gameweek to the next, in comparison to their top-flight rivals.

Bizarrely (since they were relegation candidates last year and are weaker this year) I reckon most people on here will be Villa heavy in their opening teams...
Nearly everyone will have at least 1, many people 2 and quite afew the maximum 3.
Likely candidates: Given, NZog (if he goes), Albrighton, Bent...

All price dependant obviously, but I'd take a look at Nzogbia, Albrighton, Bent, Given, Ireland and Warnock.

Probably just go for one of Ireland, Albrighton and N'Zogbia though.

Disagree - 20% tops for Bent. He only ever gets bonus when he scores lots of goals and won't have Downing or Young fizzing them in this time.

    In the spirit...

    Hart + Given £7.5m
Luiz, Kompany, Cole, Baines, Collins (Villa) £12m
Lampard, Nasri, VDV, Downing, N'Zog £21m
    RvP, Bent, Rooney £1.50

I've got an idea why don't we all make second teams that can only spend less than 80m at the start of the game but will allow for a team value to increase. You must have at least 20m in the bank at all times though? We could call it the incredible value league or something. What do you think, could make it more of a challenge?

Thanks, and I don't think everyone would have the same teams, there's loads of value players each year and would produce different teams to make it more interesting. Could change the minimum value to 85m but depends on what others think.

You would need someone to check everyone's team value once a week yes, but if the league only had 20 or so teams that wouldn't be too difficult.

What if a player starts at 6.0 but rises to 6.5 are you not allowed to buy him if he goes over 6.0? What about if he was 5.5 and goes to 6.1 not allowed to buy anymore?

I think the league would be fun but wouldn't everyone just have very good keepers/defenders and not so good midfield/strikers?

Why not set a limit of 6.0m for midfield/strikers and 5.0m for defenders/keepers? That would total around just above 80m in total.

As much as I hate Barton, I think he would give Arsenal a bit of a tough edge. Right now they don't really have any players who you'd think twice about going up against.

I think all us Arsenal fans were kidding ourselves about a busy summer. Soo many players were linked at the start but all those rumours have cooled off and Wenger is giving his annual "our defence is good enough, i have belief rant"

Im not too optimistic about signing, i still think we will finish top 4 though!

PS. Personally, i hope he just plays Ramsey. There aren't many better players out there available. And with the Cesc money, he brings in a different kind of midfielder to cover for Song and Wilshere, someone like Vidal or even Barton!

Two names from leftfield that could be worth a look under certain conditions:

Anderson - if utd don't sign a playmaker he will surely get lots of game time, especially with scholes gone + fletcher dead. His form towards end of last year was scintillating - box to box, scoring goals & bonus pts & should be cheap as chips. 2011/12 - year of the Anderson?? I bloody hope so

Vermaelen - former goal machine + should notch a few cleanies... potentially a slightly lower price due to not playing last year? Injury permitting obviously

Hurry up FPL & show us the prices!!

Anderson - He'll have similar gametime, Scholes didn't play that much and Anderson still didn't get in the team.

Vermaelen - as an arsenal fan, i would advise you not to! He'll still be around the 6.5-7 mark aswell.

I think the penny has dropped with Anderson & he is finally growing into the central midfield role... especially when they play three in the middle. You have to remember he is still very young for a midfielder and that car crash left him injured for most of the start of last year...

He's by no means a banker but worth a little look if you fancy an educated gamble as he has quite a few factors going for him this time around

He's always showed glimpses of talent but hasn't been consistent enough. He goes through a game making world class passes and then has a shocker the next game. He's constantly in and out of the team. I agree, if he is a regular he is a good pick, i gambled on him for the last game of the season, unfortunately, i don't think he will be a regular. 23 isn't young for a midfielder.

Modric is the only player we've been seriously linked to who would really suit that position - Sneijder, Nasri and Ganso are all more comfortable further forward. I'd still take any of them, though...

Of more interest to me was watching the inter friendly. This was the formation:

              http://this11.com/topics/show/5922/sneijder-deep-inter-vs-ac-mezzocorona

and Sneijder was brilliant with a goal and an assist while running the midfield (albeit against awful opposition). Good fun to watch a really attacking formation, shame more teams don't play it!

Anderson - love the guy, but he's scored about 3 PL goals in 3 seasons at Utd. Just can't shoot (from distance, at least.)

Vermaelen - totally agree - I don't think his scoring was a one-off (see Shawcross, Cahill etc.) - he gets forward frequently, has a good shot and isn't scared to beat a man.

Ando is only really a viable option if Utd don't sign anymore midfielders. Considering we have only 3 fit at the moment - that's highly unlikely!

Like the Verm punt though, he's a lousy defender who marauds forward too much but he's defo a goal risk.

He won't replace Paul Scholes, but he'll definitely play a lot more this season and there have been many games when he has shown potential. Unfortunately these games are coupled with ones where he plays terribly...I just hope he plays consistently good IF he is given the game time.

I wouldn't be as quick to rule out an improvement in Anderson's play as some seem to be... a crucial factor that can be forgotten is that players can improve, particularly young players. If his decision making tidies up a bit & gets just a bit more composure in front of goal he could do all right. He certainly handles the physical side of the game well. Anyways, just a thought as a squad filler/risky choice... any other shouts out there of similar players? I'm sure Taarabt has already been discussed at length!

        To Yatesy -

        The rules are -

Any player with a GW1 starting value of 6.0 or less is eligible.

It does not matter if their price rises above 6.0 as long as in GW1 they were 6.0 or less.

If a player drops down in price to 6.0 or below he becomes eligible from the moment of his price drop.

I'm doing a basic website with a list of rules and eligible players which I will update weekly.

I tried to do something like this last year, made up a game called super-subs, you only got points if the player came on as a sub. It was a terrible and boring game that lasted one gameweek, Total score 3.
A game like this picking cheapies that do well, is basically what everyone does in normal FPL to try fit in the pricey players. Picking a whole 11 players? 8 out of 11 players will only get appearance points each week, bar keepers perhaps.

Ah okay so it will give you more players to pick from as it wont matter if they go over 6m after gw1. So you can't really miss the boat on a player just because he has suddenly gone too expensive.

Just wondering are we even allowed to make secondary teams or?

Ok ok the Sneijder bit is fantasy, but i put Young and Valencia in over Nani as they both put in a massive shift defensively too which 343 would require. Fabio and Rafael could do that role aswell.

Even if Sneijder somehow signs that formation wouldn't work. You couldn't have someone else (Rooney) playing with him in the hole or support striker position. It didn't work with him & VDV for NL, VDV had to be moved into a into a more orthodox midfield or wing position.
