Saturday brought a whole raft of pre-season friendlies with many of the Premier League top guns stretching sinews.

Gervinho’s brace on his Arsenal debut offered an early warning sign to the chaos he can cause defences – enough to have Arsene Wenger purring in post-match anticipation. Fantasy Managers will be stroking chins, pondering the merits of the Ivorian, perturbed no doubt by his classification as a Fantasy forward.

United overcame the heat to earn another stateside victory over Chicago Fire – Wayne Rooney again on the scoresheet. Liverpool meanwhile, slipped to a surprising reversal on Humberside, Nigel Pearson’s Hull City humbling the Liverpool revolution despite debuts for Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s abilities and Fantasy potential is undoubted; his brace in Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Orlando Pirates will surely have him blink brighter on our pre-season radars. Enough to cause an initial squad overhaul? Tottenham’s early fixtures cause concern but the Van der Vaart pre-season form may yet force a rethink.

There were plenty of other sides in action, including Everton, Sunderland, Norwich and Swansea. With an array of friendly matches pouring in today, it pays to keep up to date with the pre-season trends.

Our pre-season form guide is up to date with all yesterday’s action, scorers and team lineups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

VDV is a big game player, not too worried about his fixtures. I would trust Spurs more against a big team than I would a swansea

VdV is fixture proof and on pens.

N'Zogbia and Adam played for teams that were relegation favourites all last season but that never stopped them earning a ton of points.

In fact, the tougher the fixture, the more likely VDV will play a central advanced role. He may drop wide for lesser teams to accommodate 2 out and out strikers.

Hi everyone as many have and still are I have been changing my team pretty much on a daily basis.

With RMT's all over the place people are always going to point out the same issues with certain players.

    For example:
Malouda - we dont know if he will start same goes for Luiz/Torres/Drogba/Nani/Young/Valencia/Hernandez etc...
Suarez - will he be fit and allowed to start?

These are the players that have mainly been an issue for me Im sure there are many more that others have been contemplating.

So I have finally decided to stick to a very simple rule.

Until team lineups become clearer then the player I am unsure of does not go into my team.

This way you ensure your team has starters and can settle on a team that will be good on day one. Even if there is no coverage in a particular area such as Chelsea going foreward for example its for good reason.

When Lineups become clearer people can be transferred in and out thus giving me less of a headache in the few weeks leading up to GW1.

Just wanted to get that off my chest. 🙂

      you are right

one thing that cost me early last season was the number of gambles i took that ended up not starting or being dropped early on.

this forced me into an early WC

I had exactly the same last season, one of the worst things that could happen one GW1 is that your big money players dont play.
Just as an example if you get Malouda in and he doesnt play thats 10.5 missing from your team!! its alot of money to lose out on.

Yeah it's worth picking a sub keeper who rotates )home/away games) relatively well with your first choice. So you may as well change your swansea keeper to Ruddy from Norwich, since between him and Given there's only 2 weeks all season when they're both playing away from home.

Personally I think the Swansea keeper rotates as well if not better than Norwich. I'm not as bothered rotating keepers for home games (particuarly if one of them is Norwich or Swansea) as theres always save points as well as clean sheets. I'd as soon have Given away at Blackburn as the back up keeper at home to say Fulham.

So I look across the ticker and I'm only really interested in the weeks when Villa have a really tough game - in those weeks I'd be as happy with the Swansea keeper as the Norwich one. And I think Swansea will be better defensively.

Real frustrated gervinho is a forward - he's going to be playing similar role to Walcott, doesn't make much sense. I think he'll be a fantasy hit.

Tempted by a forward line of Rooney, rvp and suarez and then going with a pretty cheap midfield. Some more standout options will probably come across after some more transfer activity I reckon.

its like last year, once the deadline is reached, u cnt change anything until the gw is over.
after that if u have a player that ddnt play, then automatic substitution will occur.
u can always read the rules on the FPL site u know.

for all managers, like myself, signing given, make sure ur second keeper is reliable since given has a long history with injuries (for a keeper of course)
thats what kpt harper as a backup keeper at newcastle for a decade. every single season he was getting 5 to 6 games at least because of givens injuries and niggles.

A lot of people picking Given. He probably will make a lot of saves but he's joined a really weak team who'll concede a lot. I'm puttung money on Villa to be relegated this season.

There is no way villa will go down. They have the same defensive base that they had 2 years ago when they were one of the most solid teams in the league. They also have a new very defensively minded manager and excellent fixtures.

dnt judge villa on last season's showing.
oneill resigned 3 days before GW1
      caretaker for 6 gws
then houiller enherited a team there management staff ddnt want to collabtrate with him
then mcallister took over to finish the season.
despite all this, they were midtable.

the last time this happened. the toons got relegated

OK, it's been long enough... I have to ask.

Why are people selecting Ruddy? Also, why the Given/Ruddy selection?

I think from GW3 Norwich and Villa alternate home fixtures very well.

Norwich may not get many clean sheets but he'll get a sh1tload of saves. Villa will also start building from the back

I just think there's a better keeper pairing that's all. It's the only position I can't see me changing between now and GW1.

Who you got KC? At £9mill in total u may not find a better pairing. I did toy with alhabsi before but wigan are a liability. Impossible to predict which wigan will turn up.

Concerned about putting big guns in my team. May yet drop suarez based on him being knackerd after copa america. Any advice/tweaks are welcome....

    Given (Ruddy)
Terry Kompany A Hughes (Simpson Bramble)
    O'hara Nzgobia Taarabt Lampard (Moses)
    RVP Suarez Holt

Think there are plenty of set piece takers for each team. Not sure which Lampard will turn up but will be less of a gamble than Malouda i should think? ADVICE WELCOME

      Cole instead of terry
      VDV instead of Lampard

Sweet! There are some essential players you have to have in. I will pro have to drop suarez...thinking rodallega or zamora n then could make other upgrades elsewhere

Don't worry so much about big guns.... theres no extra points for nice biceps. A great set of washboard abs are more important imo.

Guys.... Finally made my team... RMT please

    De Gea / makalamby

    Cole / kompony / bramble / hill(QPR) / simpson

    VDV / Murphy / sinclair / Nzogbia / Taarabt

Rooney / Bent / Holt (0.0 left in bank)

My main worry is Midfield and Rooney or RVP dilemma..
We can afford only 3 big players (above 9$) So, what they should be? 2MF+1Striker or 2striker+1MF?

My only question would be who would your captains by in the first few weeks when Rooney and VDV have tough fixtures.

Week 1 - VDV or Taarabat?
      2&3 - Bent
      4 onwards... not sure?

If you're happy with what captais you can choose then go with it. I would like an Arsenal and a Chelsea player for captaincy choice i the first few weeks (unless you will captain Cole).

Hey guys, looking for any advice or changes anyone thinks I should make..

    Given (Kenny)
Kompany Rafael A.Cole (Figueroa, De Laet)
    Silva Albrighton Taarabt N'Zogbia (Tiote)
    Rodallega Suarez Van Persie

Figueroa and Rodallega simply in there because of Wigan's easy early run. Also not sold on De Laet or Tiote's job security so unsure on them.
