Saturday brought a whole raft of pre-season friendlies with many of the Premier League top guns stretching sinews.

Gervinho’s brace on his Arsenal debut offered an early warning sign to the chaos he can cause defences – enough to have Arsene Wenger purring in post-match anticipation. Fantasy Managers will be stroking chins, pondering the merits of the Ivorian, perturbed no doubt by his classification as a Fantasy forward.

United overcame the heat to earn another stateside victory over Chicago Fire – Wayne Rooney again on the scoresheet. Liverpool meanwhile, slipped to a surprising reversal on Humberside, Nigel Pearson’s Hull City humbling the Liverpool revolution despite debuts for Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s abilities and Fantasy potential is undoubted; his brace in Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Orlando Pirates will surely have him blink brighter on our pre-season radars. Enough to cause an initial squad overhaul? Tottenham’s early fixtures cause concern but the Van der Vaart pre-season form may yet force a rethink.

There were plenty of other sides in action, including Everton, Sunderland, Norwich and Swansea. With an array of friendly matches pouring in today, it pays to keep up to date with the pre-season trends.

    What do people think the results of the opening fixtures will be, always helps me decide on probable players.

    Blackburn v Wolverhampton – repeat of last game of season, like look of hoilett, wolves defence improved (home win, poss home clean sheet)

    Fulham v Aston Villa – Fulham plenty of competitve game time, strong villa defence (score draw) Liverpool v Sunderland – can see livepool scoring a few against a team still geling (home win, no clean sheets)

    QPR v Bolton – thought there would be more new faces at loftus road losin tarabat will be blow, Bolton always look like scoring (away win, no clean sheets)

    Tottenham v Everton – Spurs will want a win with tough fixtures to follow, toffees always slow starters (home win, poss clean sheet)

    Wigan v Norwich – Really fancy an upset here, Norwich will attack on road bit like blackpool (Away win, no clean sheets)

    Newcastle v Arsenal – Disjointed preseason so far for the toon, few
    players missin in the states, let hope
    Arsenal keep thier 4-0 lead this time
    (Away win, poss away clean sheet)

    Stoke v Chelsea – Stoke at Britannia
    welcome to the PL AVB, Super Sundays first fixture could end in a stalemate (Goaless Draw)

    West Brom v Man Utd – Baggies have not invested at the back, coupled with uniteds frontline = highest scoring fixture and top of the league after GW1 (Away win, poss clean sheet)

    Man City v Swansea – Swans foundations were built on strong
    defence think they may frustrate City a little, even so think captain must come from Manchester for GW1 (Home win, poss clean sheet).

    Notes:

    4.5m in bank so i can make decisions about chelsea players after gw1 (E.g. Dont want to waste a transfer getting *insert chelsea player's name* out after gw1 when he's benched)

    Willing to take the risk on tchoyi starting since he's cheap and imo a great prospect.

      You will have the cheapest team on FFS thats for sure!! In an ideal world we all want to keep money in the bank to see who emerges but with the prices this season its tough enough. For the amount you have spent its a decent enough side but I would spend some more.

          Yeh but then you would have Malouda. Chelsea have been given the fixtures to start like they did last season and we don't want to miss out on all those points.

            yes well at the end of gw1 i can buy malouda for pennant. But i'd rather have the option of other chelsea players and other midfielders out instead of pennant.

            So since i don't see malouda firing them in at stoke, i'm willing to have a cheaper team in gw1

              Yep makes sense scored. Think I'll leave options to decide gw2 on a chelsea attacker too. Few players I don't rate personally but I'm probably wrong so stick with it 🙂

      You'd be better off with Hughes than Baird, for the same price. I'd pick any one of Barton, Murphy, Brunt over Pennant. Otherwise that's an impressive team considering the 4.5m left over!

        can't pick murphy (3 fulham) yeah i thought about barton and brunt too, they're possibilities. Brunt dried up at end of last season though. (And pennant was on fire). TY for ideas

      Too close to call I reckon so I think it depends on the rest of your squad. Swansea have hard games in weeks 1, 4, 6, 11 & 12. If you are picking another cheaper player who rotates well and has decent games in those weeks (e.g. QPR) then Sinclair is a good shout.

      If your team has other weak players (because of plenty of big players) then the greater number of good fixtures for Albrighton makes him a better shout and worth the 0.5 million extra as you need him to play more games.

          In that case, i like the defence. Midfield needs sorting out. Strikers are good for the first few games but you'll want RVP or Rooney soon.

      It's a nice balanced team. Where is Taarabt though? You could do Albrighton to Taarabt.

      The other problem is you have no big name midfielders or strikers except Bent, but you can't always rely on Villa to score. I suppose you could do Bent to someone like Suarez after a couple of weeks but not having Lampard, Rooney or RVP could bite you in the butt.

          Indeed I also have Zamora and Rodallega, but I also have Rooney who seems in great form in pre-season. As Hernandez might not be back for the start of the season Rooney could be right up top. Bent may do well also, but I feel like I need one of Rooney/RVP.

    Originally I had Torres and Albrighton/Taarabt because I have a the same feeling about Torres as I did with Drogba (pre-seasson 09/10) but I thought it would be best to have one 10m + midfielder.

    Would downgrading Al Habsi to a 4.0m keeper and upgrading Ben Arfa --> Barton be a good idea?

    Finally I had Gibbs in for Rafeal but switched to Rafeal due to lack of united players good move or bad move?

      Not sure about downing being worth it until we see evidence of the liverpool style and how he fits in.

      With malouda and drogba we can't be sure of starts so it depends if you're a gambler!

          yeah I know what you mean...I think downing will start as the main thing liverpool missed last season were crosses and with Carroll it seems like a no brainer to play him.

          If drogba starts he should be a bargain

      Ruddy is the cheapest (probably) definite starter, no point having a reserve keeper who will sit on the bench in real life too.
