When it comes to midfielders, Arsene Wenger doesn’t have his troubles to seek. The Gunners boss, having seen his side’s pre-season preparation blighted by the continual speculation over the futures of skipper Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, has confirmed Theo Walcott has flown home from the club’s training camp in Bonn due to an injury picked up in training.

Walcott sat out Monday’s training and boarded a flight home from Germany yesterday, ahead of this weekend’s Emirates Cup. The Arsenal boss, while not suggesting it’s a serious problem, did admit:

“Theo went home early and was due to have an MRI on Tuesday. It is an old ankle injury from the end of last season. It’s one that comes and goes.

“We need some more investigation because sometimes he’s completely free of it and sometimes it affects him. But we had to send him back because he couldn’t practice anymore.”

The news is a source of frustration for Fantasy managers- Walcott looks good for plenty starts on the right this season and coming in at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League, may prove to be something of a bargain if one, or both, of Fabregas and Nasri follow the lead of Gael Clichy and depart for pastures new.

While new signing Gervinho could be an alternative in his possible absence, FPL have classified the former Lille man as a forward, and priced him at 9.0. Robin Van Persie is likely to be the front man of choice for the majority of Fantasy managers, however, leaving many to hope the likes of Nasri stays put, with the Frenchman surely a nailed-on starter for Wenger in the upcoming season.

I was having a play and prior to this news I was surprised at the decent team I created:

    Given (Ruddy)
    Cole Clichy Kompany (Simpson, Orr)
    Walcott NZogbia Barton Yaya (Ferguson)
    Bent Zamora Rooney

This was before the Walcott news and with the thinking of using Wild Card after GW3 once more is known on form and starting 11s.

Nowt wrong with an early wildcard, but if you're actually planning to use it in GW3 you might want to have a rethink.

      Nice team, though.

My squad with some commentary/reasoning. If anyone has any comments/criticisms/advice, I'd love to hear them!

    GK: Given, Al-Habsi
(Originally had Given & Begovic as they rotate perfectly, but wanted to free up some funds, and Al Habsi still rotates pretty well.)

DEF: Cashley, Kompany, Hughes, Bramble, STaylor
(Cashley and Kompany will be my stalwarts as they both offer great chances of regular clean sheets, and I believe Cashley may be more attacking this season under AVB. Fulham at home are often good for clean sheets, hence Hughes, and Sunderland and Newcastle rotate well all season, hence Bramble and Taylor. Taylor also had a few goals at the end of last season).

MID: Silva, N'Zogbia, Sessegnon, Taarabt, Dyer)
(Silva and N'Zogbia are pretty self explanatory. Sessegnon is a good mid-priced midfielder as he plays almost as a striker and could get goals. Although I'm wary of promoted teams, QPR have good opening fixtures, Taarabt is on set pieces and I imagine he'll have a part in most of any goals they get. Dyer is there as a cheap bench player, but could get a few points and rotates well with Taarabt. I do feel like my midfield is the weakest part of my team though.)

    FOR: Van Persie, Suarez, Zamora
(I was torn between Van Persie and Rooney, and could yet be swayed. Suarez, providing he's fit, is a great pick at a great price and a must-have. I've considered a few people for my cheaper striker - mainly Ba - but Zamora gets goals, Fulham have good opening fixtures, and Jol has promised more attacking football.)

Good team (it's similar to mine).
I'm still not convinced about Silva - 9.5 is a lot for someone who isn't on set pieces. I think the option this year is either have a chaper midfield or only have one more expensive striker. Could downgrade zamora to holt and upgrade dyer for example though.

This is a good team, I'm personally inclined to adopt a wait and see approach on Sess and Suarez, and although lots of teams have Hughes I don't think Fulham defenders will be good picks this season at the price, but these are very niggly criticisms.

At the same price - Warnock and Villa have favourable opening fixtures.

Going the 4.0 route, I think Briggs could be a unique option (a possible Coleman) as he has being playing right mid during the pre-season, and given the Europa league games, Duff will be rested and Briggs could get a couple of chances to get a run of games.

GK - Kenny is a good second option rotates perfectly with Given

DF - I have both Cole and Kompany (tempted by Luiz) See chelsea article below:

      http://backpagefootball.com/premier-league/season-preview-chelsea-2/

MF - solid Sess could be a game changer too

FW - Rooney/RVP/Tevez is my choice atm... I have Carroll and Roda who I think are better value at the start of the season.

I think he'll start in the right back position ahead of Bosingwa. Luiz Terry in the centre with Cole Right back.

Your team is similar to mine:

Benayoun Downing Van Der Vaart O'Hara Barton
          Bent Suarez Holt/Dembele

Rafael, I'd wait on as Fabio won the place at the end of last season and is cheaper at 5. I don't think Benayoun is going to get very much game time tbh. Suarez will be highly unlikely to start. So you won't have much of an option as to who your subs are.

Yeah I hear you...was trying to get a different vibe running through the team.

I had read that Rafael had played 3*90min games with 2 assists. Benayoun has featured a lot under AVB during pre-season and that suarez had cut his pre-season short due to already having a decent winter break with Ajax and stuff (7 game ban)?!?!?

Yep, I heard that all as well. Rafael should get the nod,but MU don't have the best opening fixtures in the first 5. I think Benayoun is another Boseli. Could be wrong but I can't see him getting into that squad as a starter regardless of what happens in preseason. Yeah Suarez has tweeted that apparently and could very well happen, but I'm looking at using Bent/Zamora/Torres till GW3 where I hope to have Suarez/Augero/Torres for the rest of the season.

Teams managed by McCleish tend to score on average -3 goals every season. 7.5 million is also quite a lot for someone who actually doesn't score/assist that many goals.

I would agree... McCleish sets up defensively and the wingers will be tracking a lot the other way.... Not for me...

Barton would be a better choice for me... cheaper - free kicks and corners and 90mins a game..

Cole/Terry - on a point per minute basis they were roughly even last season, and I hate Ashley Cole.

Vidic is a man monster and a guaranteed Man Utd starter.

Kompany - I know he is a good player but on a points per minute basis he doesn't stack up. Why is everyone so convinced this will change? I know Man City have quality but Vidic is the proven performer.

Would you go Downing instead of Kuyt, with Bent. And go for O'Hara.

Think that is quite a good team although a little weak up front and it dosen't really give you the flexability to change it around without wasting a transfer or two.

Could A Johnson be a bargain at 5.5?
I know he's not actually that good of a player but he's played well in pre-season, Jols said that him and Zamora are his first choice in 4-4-2, they are bound to score more goals under Jol than Hughes.

What's the prospect of Dembele? At 5.5 he will be an absolute bargain if he starts regularly and rediscovers the form he was in when he first arrived at Fulham. Even if he was to be played on the wing seeing that AJ and Zamora are both fit.

No, I think he will suffer tbh. I think he is very over-rated and Madrid highlighted how one dimensional he is by putting a two man zone on him. I think alot of teams will employ this on him this season. At the same price and team, Modric is a better option.
