Today’s Members article is the third instalment focusing on player value. We turn our attentions to the top ten midfielders in our Members Projections area and analyse just why we anticipate each of them to be so budget-friendly Fantasy prospects in the upcoming 2011/12 campaign. With three of our top four are already justifying our hopes in early pre-season by finding the net in their respective clubs’ friendlies, some of the names are already blinking brightly on our radars…
After days of boredom, studying and tinkering, this is what I've came up with.
Reina (Al Habsi)
A. Cole, Hangeland, M. Richards, Kompany, (Simpson)
VDV, Sinclair, Taarabt, (Brunt, Ephraim)
Bent, Suarez, K Davies
Davies, Taarabt and Brunt would be rotated depending on fixtures. Also by choosing mids around 6.5 mil, if players aren't preforming there's lots of others who are affordable to put in their place. e.g. Sessegnon for Taarabt.
What do you think?
Be gentle ;o)Open ControlsNot so sure about doubling up on City Defenders, not too sure on Davies and i have no idea who Ephraim is, but apart from that its quite good chap.
Open ControlsYea, I don't like doubling up but looking at their games and the price in comparison to United or Chelsea defenders they seemed better value. I'm a Liverpool fan but don't know who our choice defense will be. That's 1 position that could change. Cheers though mate.
Open Controls
Kevin Davies has terrible fixtures early on get Ba or maybe Holt instead. I'd say Clichy is more nailed on in City's defence than Richards. You could downgrade Hangeland to Hughes and use the 1.5 to upgrade Eprahim
Open ControlsHangeland scores infinitely more than hughes though. 2nd top defender last year. I agree wi the fixtures but I think that Newcastle could be shocking. Also Holt, I had him in before too but changed my mind, I'm already risking two championship players wi Sinclair and Taarabt. I chose Davies because he's proven and last season towards the end he was unplayable.
Thanks for the response.Open ControlsKeep in mind Martin Jol is an attacking manager so Fulham may not get as many clean sheets, which is why I wouldnt have Hangeland
Open ControlsFar comment, that's the reason why I'd take him over Hughes though. He scores goals and picks up bonus points. I'd like to put Huth or Shawcross in but their fixtures are terrible.
Open Controls
Doubling on City is a gamble, but might pay off. I personally like nthe double-defender gambit ... just wondering if Richards is better than Clichy.
VDV has vicious fixtures weeks 2-5, although you mkight be thinking he's class enough to produce anyway.
Since you have Reina and will, presumably, be starting him 95% of the time ... why not downgrade Al-Habsi to Ruddy and get Hart/Cech instead?Open ControlsI'd prefer Reina over Hart and Cech anyway and seeing as though I already have a Chelsea defender and 2 city defenders I think it could be overkill. Hughes does look good value but Hangeland was my 2nd choice defender after Cole. I'm still uming and arring over Davies.
Thanks again peeps keep the comments comingOpen ControlsRb seems 50/50 between Richards and zabaletta. Kompany & lescott look the safe options to start with.
Open ControlsI'd disagree. Clichy is a safer bet than Lescott. I wouldn't be surprised if Onuoha got the nod over Lescott.
Open Controls
Davies will get you more yellows than goals. 2 QPR mids might be a little over reliant. Hangeland is too dear imo, especially when Hughes is only 5.
Has potential though.Open Controlshow did fulham get so many clean sheets last season? dya think hughes was one season guy or is he worth putting in again
Open ControlsHughes wasnt a one season guy, thats for sure.
Open ControlsA lot of people talking about Fulham not doing as well defensively this season, but at the moment they have the same key defensive personnel, i.e. Schwarzer, Hangelaand, Hughes- and the same hard-working midfield. They're not going to forget how to defend, they've been consistently solid for a fair while. Maybe they'll be a bit more gung-ho and drop a couple of clean sheets, but I don't think the difference will be that drastic.
Open Controls
any ideas on who are the best defenders priced at 4.. from newly prmoted teams as well?
Open ControlsOrr and Simpson are the most popular here.
Open Controls
Champ, on the subject of Norwich players, I see Henri Lansbury is signing for them permanently. He could be another one to watch, but they've not put him in the game yet. I was hoping he'd be there as a 4.5m Arsenal squad player (ala O'Hara a couple of years back at Spurs on loan to Portsmouth) but hey....
Open ControlsBest 4.5 defender?
A. Bramble (have him at the moment)
B. Salgado
C. Shorey
D. Alcaraz
E. other (who?)Open ControlsNoticed absolutely nobody has gone for any Tottenham coverage at the back. Why is that? Besides having a pretty ordinary season at the back last year, they were a fortress the season before. Do people believe its going to be the same as last season? I reckon Assou-Ekoto is a decent shout out for 5.0
Open Controlspurely fixture related i think. otherwise i think you'd see a few dawsons and assou-ekottos flying about
Open ControlsYeh not the best i guess - utd, city and liverpool in the first 5 weeks or so. With Friedel coming there also should add some stability - atleast he will be able to catch the ball lol
Open Controls
Only one decent defender Dawson in there team so always likely to concede.
Open Controls
FPL's back at last - thank the gods!
Current team as follows:
given (al-habsi)
samba kompany rafael jags (simpson)
sessegnon vdv taarabt nzog (tiote)
rvp rooney (beattie)
anything look immediately dodgy?Open ControlsSolid mate!
Only thing is Beattie...not going to get much better for 4.5 I suppose, but he only started 9 games last season for SwanseaOpen Controlsbeattie's my comedy player this year - i figure why spend anything more than the base minimum on players who are gonna be warming the bench? but i do recognise that rafael is a danger: to himself, to other players, and most importantly, to my fantasy campaign! the only other defender i really fancy getting in is luiz but he's a risk too. what about gibbs???
Open ControlsThey should be starters at least though. Beattie won't be starting.
Open Controls
RMT please lads
Al-Habsi (Given)
Cole, Samba, Kompany, (Johnson, Simpson)
Silva, N'zogbia, Benayoun, Walters (Moses)
Rooney, Gervinho, RodallegaOpen Controlsrelying on aguero being 11 or less
who to pick outta rooney/ rvp
thoughts on barton since he said his contracts up at end of summer and newcastle not improving his dealOpen ControlsRooney, 10 for aguero imo
Open Controlsi hope so but somehow cant see it seeing he is breaking there record fee and is on 200 grand
Open ControlsTorres was 10 coming from the same team at a similar age/ability/reputation. Robinho was 9.5. I'm struggling to remember an import starting more than 10. Maybe schevchenko but he was considered one of the top 3 strikers in the world.
Who knows with this seasons prices though.Open Controls
is it possible to have put together a good team if GW1 looks like this?:
Starting XI: 4 home, 7 away
Bench: 2 home, 1 away
i like my team except im worried if i dont have a strong enough team for week 1, I wont get off to a good start and I'll have players whos value will be heading in the wrong direction.
I like the coverage, the players roles, starting job security, first 6 fixtures etc., just worried im not thinking 1 week at a time enough.Open ControlsSame here- 4 home, 7 away for my starters
Not too worried, I'd rather build my team for the first 6+ weeks, not just for GW1.
Any value lost will surely be made up if your picks are solid!Open Controlsgood as long as im not the only one.
im hoping vdv->malouda for GW2, still .5 in the bank.Open ControlsSolid. I've gone for Lamps right out of the gates.
Once the Chelsea set up becomes apparent I can downgrade to Malouda (possibly even Benayoun!), or get in Drogba/Torres.
Too much uncertainty at the moment though...Open Controls
just noticed hart if hart was a striker last season he would have come second in terms of points...surely cech/hart are worth the 7 compared to 12 of strikers?
Open ControlsGood observation, but I think strikers generally underachieved last year. Berbatov only got a handful of games post feb, malaria caught Drogba and Rooney was poor pre-christmas. I cant see the same this year, also theres more value in cheap keepers than there is in cheap strikers. I'd much rather 2 keepers for 10 million, than 2 strikers for the same price.
Open Controlsthis is true
hard to say whether the likes of odemwingie ba can replicate last season..well wort it if they do though as saving almost 5 mil whilst still getting high scoring strikerOpen ControlsIndeed. Also, you wouldnt captain Hart in 36 games of the season, fair enought here might be one or two you're really stuck for, but with a 12m striker, you would.
Open Controls
How many goals did Hart score again? 😛
Comparing prices at different positions is apples & oranges, to me.
But I do think that, sometimes, the best guarantee of playing and getting CS for less is in the 'keeper.
A massive divide exists between the '2 cheapies' and the 'one top-shelf, one bottom drawer' GK philosophy. Best thing about the latter is the absence of decision-making each week about who to start.
Wrong choice resulting in your bench 'keeper CS, saves, and PK stopped will make you want to strangle a puppy.Open Controls
I'd like to get a few people's opinion on a selection choice. Would you rather:
a. Ashley Cole and Holt
or
b. Riise and Ba
B is what im with atm but i think i could do with strengthening my defence a bit.Open Controlsthis is the team come the deadline!!!
(until i change it again for some reason)
Given
Baines, Kompany, Gabbidon
VDV, NZogbia, Taarabt, O'Hara
Rooney, RVP(C), Holt
(Moses, Simpson, N Taylor)
.5 in the bank, VDV->malouda or chelsea mid that looks nailed on for GW2
Can i take a fortnight off now?Open ControlsI thought you'd sorted this hours ago FW. Two weeks leave duly granted, then come back and get Gabbidon out. 🙂
Open Controls
Is it weird that I feel like I have to have Holt instead of someone like Zamora? Get a bad feeling every time I leave him out
Open Controlszamora is proven holt isn't. if there was a 4th striker spot i would likely have zamora in it and ditch duff
Open ControlsHolt is on pens though, and Norwich could come out flying like promoted teams have tended to in the last few years.
Open Controlsboth look good options. basically think you've got a case for going either way although i'd argue zamora is safer despite being the more expensive option without pens.
also with you on the promoted teams starting well thing. never understood how it happens but it usually does. teams not being used to them is too easy an excuse imo.Open ControlsI'd say it's to do with being properly riled up for it, wanting to make a name for themselves etc. and other teams under estimating them.
Open Controls
you could have said the same about carroll last year. There is always going to be unproven players who step up and deliver big points
Open Controlsthing is carroll was a 21 year old starting his career and only going to get better, holt is coming to the end of his career after floundering (in relative terms) in the lower leagues for his whole career
Open ControlsGood point. Didnt even realise that, Holt is 30 and has played for medicore teams in smaller leagues all his life. Although his stats from last year are very impressive.
Open ControlsMuch like dj Campbell. Odemwingie is also getting close to 30 and never had his chance in a top league.
Open ControlsWow, had no idea Odem was so old either.
Open ControlsYeah surprised me when I realised last season. Just goes to show that someone not getting the opportunity doesn't mean they won't succeed. Holt has excelled at every level despite everyone doubting him. No reason he won't do as well as dj imo.
Open Controls
to be fair dj campbell has a pretty good excuse for being a late bloomer. he quit football after fathering a kid at 17 and had self-confessed attitude problems holding him back
Open Controls
Same. Would rather bobby but 3 spots vs 5 means I'll have
Open Controls
Limited funds means we need to find a couple diamonds in the rough. 2 from hoolahan, moses, dobbie, holt, graham etc let's you afford the players you really want.
I'm 90% sure zamora will have better ppg than holt though 😛Open Controls
any ideas on who the best striker is from the newly promoted sides?
Open ControlsAm I hearing corectly that S Taylor is NOT nailed on for Newcastle? and Simpson IS?
Open ControlsCertain Attila's opinion last time he posted.
Open ControlsI think they'll both be starters. Competition would be Ryan Taylor for Simpson and Williamson for Taylor I think.
Open ControlsSimpson is nailed on as is Coloccini and Enrique.
Taylor will definitely rotate with Williamson, just like he has done for the past 2 seasons.Open ControlsYou fancy ba this season tatty?
Open ControlsDepends if we sign Mevlut Erding from PSG. If we do he becomes our number one striker and takes fhe number 9 shirt, and with Pardew saying he wants to mainly play 4-4-1-1 with Ben Arfa behind the striker this season then Ba could miss out or be rotated. Newcastles strike force will be rotation hell though so i'm going to avoid it (except for Ben Arfa).
Even iif we don't sign another striker, Ba, Best, Ameobi, Lovenkrands and Ranger all vying for one strikers position will be a fantasy football nightmare.
Ba will also be off to the ACoN in January.Open ControlsCheers taffy 🙂
I think Ben arfa will do well in the hole. Sucks he's injured.Open Controls
My second draft:
Al-Habsi
Kompany Senderos Cole Kelly
Taarabt Yaya N'Zogbia
Suarez Zamora Rooney
Subs: Given Distin Brunt Dyer
Think its pretty solid. 9 home and 2 away (Roo and Cole)
Any stand out f**k ups??Open Controlsthis is it
given (ruddy)
kompany gibbs samba (orr simpson)
vdv taarabt nzogbia sinclair (ferguson)
rooney aguero suarez
im presuming ruddy is best 4 mil keeper (de vries moreia anybody?)
not sure on having orr or gabbidon as sub
similarly samba for cahill/hughes
siclair or barton but like the idea of sinclair being the player who does everything at swansea much like taarabt aswell as uncertainty with bartons future
thoughts?Open ControlsHow are City going to line up now?
4-3-1-2 I'd say.
Toure De Jong Milner/Barry
Silva
Tevez AgueroOpen ControlsYou not think tevez will go gubbins? Hes 2/5 to go to Inter now on sky bet... hmmm..
Open ControlsHope so... Assuming Tevez will stay with this though
Open Controls
either of these:
Toure De Jong de jong barry
Silva yaya
balotelli dzeko Aguero johnson aguero silvaOpen Controlsgrrr formatting error
----- yaya ---- de jong ------
- johnson --- silva --- aguero
-----------dzeko -------------
---- de jong - barry/milner --
- balo ----- yaya ----- silva
----------- aguero -------------Open ControlsIf they somehow hang on to Tevez and play him where you have Dzeko, him as a false 9 could work brilliantly with Aguero as a winger.
Open Controls
A lot of people saying aguero 10-11. If he is added at that price I think I'm right in saying hes the most expensive player to be added to fpl for their first season? Interesting stuff....
Open Controlsi just jizzed in my pants
Given (Ruddy)
Dunne Kompany Samba Clichy (Simpson)
Nzogbia VDV Malouda Benayoun (Hoolahan)
Rodallega Odemwingie (Holt)
4 left in the bank to upgrade rodallega to aguero?!
or i can upgrade rodallega to suarez and upgrade hoolahan to taarabtOpen ControlsA: Zamora Suarez 0.5 in bank
or
B: Rodallega Drogba 0 in bank
My only Chelsea cover is Cole and it's my first season without Lampard but Torres could start instead of Drogba, even though Drog has played better on tour.Open ControlsI hate Zamora and think he is a terrible player so I would say B!
Open ControlsI'd stay away from chelsea strikers for the first gmwk. get lamps or malouda if you want chelsea coverage. Suarez may be rested too. But out of those two options. A is the better.
Open ControlsSuarez I7I...bias much? 😛
Yeah suppose one GW wont kill me to wait.
Lamps @ 12 is unaffordable for me with Rooney up front.
Id have to wait on Malouda as well but if he scores I'll be straight on him because he tends to go on streaks.Open Controls
My draft:
Given, Ruddy
Kompany, A. Cole, Baines, Wilkinson, Simpson
Yaya Toure, VDV, Taarabt, Tchoyi, Sinclair
Suarez, Bent, Holt
Any thoughts lads?Open ControlsI had VDV but got rid due to fixtures and to spread funds but then again that could bite me in the ass.
Kompany, A. Cole, Baines are all reliable but spending 21.5 on 3 defenders is a tad expensive IMO.Open Controls
Looks certain to grab starts...and the odd goal here and there 😉
Open Controlsthat's why I want him, but i don't want to keep him if he isn't going to start.
Open ControlsYou reckon jaf? A lot of competition. Bruce seemed to suggest brambles & turner would be 1st choice cb when fit. Leaves oshea at fb and one spot for brown/bardsley.
Open Controls
RMT :
Given Kenny
Komp Alcarz Simpson Bramble Hughes
Sinclair Tarrabt Segges ? ?
? ? ?
Which player to put on Question mark ?Open ControlsWhoops...
Open Controlswell said..said...said...said..said
Open ControlsCould you repeat that soup?
Silva & aguero flanking tevez would be lethal.Open Controls
