The departure of Charles N’Zogbia may have left a huge void within Wigan’s squad but in Victor Moses the club may well have a natural replacement. Certainly that’s the opinion of Latics boss Roberto Martinez who has wasted no time in talking up the abilities of the 20-year-old as he looks to reassure the Wigan faithful ahead of what seems likely to be another turbulent season at the DW Stadium.

Moses has already done his best to live up to the billing; three goals in pre-season, including an eye-catching brace to cap an impressive showing against Al Ahli in Austria on Wednesday has added fuel to the fire. Fantasy managers are now on alert and with Moses classified as a budget midfield option across many of the games, it’s clear that the former Crystal Palace starlet warrants our attention.

While nothing is certain with just over a fortnight to go before the kick-off, it’s clear that Moses is positioning himself to make his mark. Martinez has set the scene, lavishing praise on his £2.5m capture in the light of recent pre-season performances; the Wigan boss has few doubts that, in Moses, he has a player capable of providing the kind of individual attacking verve so often delivered by N’Zogbia…

“He’s a special talent…It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability…Charlie [N’Zogbia] has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up…Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”

Opportunity knocks for Moses then, but can he grasp it and provide the inspiration for Wigan and rich returns for Fantasy investors?

Key Factors

  • Moses is available as a budget option. Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game with largely defensive players such as Cheik Tiote, Lucas and Nigel De Jong in the same bracket; there’s little doubt that Moses is an attractive Fantasy proposition amongst that kind of company.

  • Wigan’s fixtures provide ample opportunity for Moses to raise his profile and FPL value. Incredibly, Martinez’s side face all three promoted sides in their first three Gameweeks. As they found with Blackpool last season (losing 0-4 on the opening day), that can be a double-edged sword but Wigan will be expected to craft opportunities in all three matches, giving Moses the chance for returns.

  • The pre-season has confirmed that Moses is growing in stature. N’Zogbia’s departure has opened the way for a definite starting role and increased responsibility and, on the evidence so far, Moses is relishing the prospect.

  • While Moses has, to this point, failed to make an impact in terms of raw statistics and Fantasy output, that can be attributed to the fact that his opportunities have been severely limited. Despite making 21 league appearances last season, Moses was given just 8 starts; he was subbed in every one of those games, often just after the hour-mark.

  • Right now Wigan’s attacking options look limited. Just as N’Zogbia’s ball carrying abilities and direct style of play had him stand out within Wigan’s lineup, Moses has shown similar talents that could see him emerge as the Latics’ key threat to opponents. It’s clear from analysis of last season’s performance statistics that Moses will need to raise his game – to make a significant step up in his end product. Renewed confidence from a prolonged run in the side could provide the impetus for that. A risk then, but at his budget Fantasy valuation, certainly a tempting one.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    team is....
    Given (ruddy)
    Gibbs Kompany Hangeland Ivanovic (simpson)
    Silva Moses Walters O'hara (Albrighton)
    Gervinho RVP (Holt)
i know both gerv and RVP is stupid but not sure which striker to bring in instead of RVP. Any suggestions?
i have 2.5mil left in the bank and will swap ruddy with foster which will leave either 1.5mil or 1 mil so could possible upgrade one of my mids any suggestions there? cheers

      Improve your midfield

      Gibbs is not guaranteed starter
      Neither is Ivanovic
Change RVP to Rooney or Gervinho to Bent/Hernandez/Carroll

I'm seeing a lot of Aguero love. (I've been around for half an hour in the last 2 weeks).

Why? He's class but not on penalties and new to the league. Fixtures are decent I suppose.

        Tevez, Balotelli, Barry

That seems to be the order based on last season. But did Aguero take pens at Madrid? If Tevez goes then you want your penalty taker to be a regular starter

my excuse is i want a man city attacking player for gw1 and am not sure about the starting prospects of dzeko, johnson and balotelli. presuming tevez either leaves or goes awol that only really leaves silva or yaya (also probably not on penalties). seeing as price isn't an issue as he'll become drogba/torres or if silva malouda for gw2, then aguero is at the moment top of my list

six goals and six assists from a season mainly as an attacking mid doesn't excite me at all. it was good for 5.5mil. besides there's every chance silva could ply the most advanced role of the middle 3 this season making yaya just a glorified de jong

If Tevez goes, Aguero is merely a replacement and I can't see much of a change in formation. One up front with Silva just behind.
I went for Silva towards the end of last season when I could easily have got Toure and missed out on a hatful of points. Silva whilst a really good player, doesn't score many goals really, like Modric.
I'm interested to see how City start. It was only towards the end of the season that they had any sort of consistency and clearly the most recent history is in all of our minds.

can't see him getting any better and now he's 8mil that's my worry. good scores aren't a bonus any more, they're more an expectation at that price. also that was his USP over silva, now their price difference has been slashed in half

Indeed. It's really tough to choose a team for me! If I get Yaya, I don't really want Aguero but then I'll want RVP AND Rooney and then the midfield has to take another hit.

I think people are reading too much into the EA rankings…

Some people are comparing total scores for the season (I.e. Bale has a total higher score than VdV… because he played more games – this does not affect bonus points in a game they both play!)

Also even for averages, a high mean score does not mean that player is consistently in the top 3 players on the pitch.

People saying Kompany will get BPs consistently are not thinking it through. His average score per week is only minimally higher than an attacker… but when that attacker scores a goal he will have a higher weekly score than kompany.

So basically, kompany only gets BPs in a low scoring game where he gets a clean sheet (Nothing new there then)

People – I recommend you don’t try and second guess the new BP system because i’d be surprised if it makes as much difference as people are anticipating. If a player scores 2 goals, he will get BPs, if it is 0-0 defenders will, if it is 5-4 defenders won’t…

I really don’t think a huge amount will change except the likes of modric will no longer be rewarded for being pleasing on the eye.

It is quite a lot more complicated than that, and I don't agree with you. Besides - it's only me so far, there are no "people", so you don't have to worry. I'm fairly sure of myself, and I've had my say, so I'll pipe down now. I do agree that Kompany will get fewer bonii, for reasons outlined elsewhere.

I'm not saying it to argue with you... I'm saying it because I'm worried that if you use that strategy you will regret it. Hopefully you'll change your mind slightly before gw1

To base your team selection on an unknown is not a good idea and imo you are over analysing it. You may be right that there will be a small advantage to DMs now but it will amount to a few points a season

An assist is the same as 3 bonus points (And it also increases your chance of bonus points)

I am not using it as a strategy - I am politely pointing out what I believe is a mistaken perception. Owing to the crappy pricing of the midfield of the game, that misperception may have a disproportionate effect on outcomes. I have selected one extra "big" player at the back, and one defensive midfielder. This seems to have upset one or two received opinions. Good.

Well, under the old system, the bonus points were awarded roughly according to a players overall performance. Goals played a disproportionate influence, after which came assists. Saves were considered only in the event of a huge amount, or a lot in a low scoring or scoreless match. This is why only Ben Foster came in the old Top 100. In the new proposed system, there would have been 12 goalkeepers, headed by Joe Hart. There are 32 defenders in the new, as opposed to 19 in the old. Midfielders are down from 52 to 43, including at least 5 Defensive mids who would never have had a sniff before. The new system has six criteria, which have been listed passim, and which should prove clearer. However, the new system will definitely militate against losing teams, so someone like Adam(Taarabt?) is only listed at no. 20 instead of by far and away no. 1

nooooo the 'old system' gives points to 3 players (1, 2 or 3)

The 'new system' you're talking about gives points to 22 players + subs.

We only care about the top 3 of these each week.

The reason gks and defenders did worse in the bp system is because they were rarely top 3 but also rarely bottom 3

Strikers will likely be number 1 or number 22
depending if they scored or missed that day

OK. As I said, I've had my say. I've put the player list on several tables, and sorted them according to different attributes. This came up, and I decided to share it. I think it's useful ...

but to compare it properly you need to find out who was 1st 2nd and 3rd in the EA rankings for individual games last season.

Not who got the highest total/ average score

You're comparing 2 very different things right now and so is the guy who wrote that article linked below

"So basically, kompany only gets BPs in a low scoring game where he gets a clean sheet (Nothing new there then)"

Actually Kompany got very few bonus points last season, and will get far more this season, as is EA PPI is much larger relatively than his bonus points total.

The bonus judges overlooked him more often than not, the stats will not.
