The departure of Charles N’Zogbia may have left a huge void within Wigan’s squad but in Victor Moses the club may well have a natural replacement. Certainly that’s the opinion of Latics boss Roberto Martinez who has wasted no time in talking up the abilities of the 20-year-old as he looks to reassure the Wigan faithful ahead of what seems likely to be another turbulent season at the DW Stadium.

Moses has already done his best to live up to the billing; three goals in pre-season, including an eye-catching brace to cap an impressive showing against Al Ahli in Austria on Wednesday has added fuel to the fire. Fantasy managers are now on alert and with Moses classified as a budget midfield option across many of the games, it’s clear that the former Crystal Palace starlet warrants our attention.

While nothing is certain with just over a fortnight to go before the kick-off, it’s clear that Moses is positioning himself to make his mark. Martinez has set the scene, lavishing praise on his £2.5m capture in the light of recent pre-season performances; the Wigan boss has few doubts that, in Moses, he has a player capable of providing the kind of individual attacking verve so often delivered by N’Zogbia…

“He’s a special talent…It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability…Charlie [N’Zogbia] has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up…Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”

Opportunity knocks for Moses then, but can he grasp it and provide the inspiration for Wigan and rich returns for Fantasy investors?

Key Factors

  • Moses is available as a budget option. Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game with largely defensive players such as Cheik Tiote, Lucas and Nigel De Jong in the same bracket; there’s little doubt that Moses is an attractive Fantasy proposition amongst that kind of company.

  • Wigan’s fixtures provide ample opportunity for Moses to raise his profile and FPL value. Incredibly, Martinez’s side face all three promoted sides in their first three Gameweeks. As they found with Blackpool last season (losing 0-4 on the opening day), that can be a double-edged sword but Wigan will be expected to craft opportunities in all three matches, giving Moses the chance for returns.

  • The pre-season has confirmed that Moses is growing in stature. N’Zogbia’s departure has opened the way for a definite starting role and increased responsibility and, on the evidence so far, Moses is relishing the prospect.

  • While Moses has, to this point, failed to make an impact in terms of raw statistics and Fantasy output, that can be attributed to the fact that his opportunities have been severely limited. Despite making 21 league appearances last season, Moses was given just 8 starts; he was subbed in every one of those games, often just after the hour-mark.

  • Right now Wigan’s attacking options look limited. Just as N’Zogbia’s ball carrying abilities and direct style of play had him stand out within Wigan’s lineup, Moses has shown similar talents that could see him emerge as the Latics’ key threat to opponents. It’s clear from analysis of last season’s performance statistics that Moses will need to raise his game – to make a significant step up in his end product. Renewed confidence from a prolonged run in the side could provide the impetus for that. A risk then, but at his budget Fantasy valuation, certainly a tempting one.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Squillaci gives the ball away and Boca score.

It's looking like this in the 2nd half:

    Mannone
    Jenkinson Squillaci Djourou Traore
    Ramsey Frimpong
    Vela Nasri Eboue
    Chamakh

Boca have scored again. Djourou at fault this time.

I'm an arsenal fan as well but it is obvious to everyone in the whole world that our defense blows.
        Everyone but Wenger that is.
I say we just buy Samba and/or Jagielka no matter the price, at least we know those guys are good and will improve our defense.

Well something must be done about our defense, buying players that are clearly much better at defending than the ones we currently got must be a good move.
Gervinho and this Mata fella are great in sure, but they are not desperatly needed.
Not buying any really good defenders is equal to forfeiting the titelrace and CL as far as I'm concerned.

too simple to say that imo. people say arsenal concede form set pieces then think who's good at defending set pieces (samba and cahill) then think right that's the answer. what about the rest of defending? positioning, reading the game, concentration, agility, pace etc. if the targets being talked about were good enough in those areas they wouldn't be playing for the clubs they are playing for imo. jagielka being talked about is refreshing because he's more complete than the those two heading machines.
so yeah win a few more headers every game, patch up one hole but then watch the other holes which open up. i agree it could be a good idea to get a samba for the squad for different options

I'm not an expert on the subject, I just know our defense is shite and we need to buy some defenders not more attackers.
Which defenders to buy I don't know. But yeah someone really tall seems like a good idea.
Money should not matter as this is a crucial area to strenghten and failure to do so could result in us missing CL next year in the worst case scenario if pool or tottenham have a great season.

yeah, not necessarily disagreeing with you, i'm disagreeing with the targets people are talking about. buy a top class centre back who will definitely improve things or don't bother. finding a vidic or kompany really isn't easy.

Really not liking Drogba though until Torres gets injured. Also think are prob better options than Delap, Wilshire, Skrtel.

Debate - which one of these do you think is better?

(i)Having 6-7 attacking players that you start every week and a cheap 4.0 or thereabouts bench fodder

(ii) Spreading it a bit more even and playing your bench more often

I've heard decent arguments for both. On the one hand, there is a strong relation between home games & attacking points hence rotating sounds good. On the other hand, with attacking players esp ones on pens its sometimes tough to predict the big point hauls. For example I missed at least 3 big hauls for Chaz Adam last season.

    Opinions?

The vast vast majority nowadays play 3 at the back so 7 of the front 8 play each week. Personally I like all of the front 8 to be playable options.

Defenders ofc more rotatable and bench fodder easier to get away with until snow time.

I'm having benayoun, all the pre-season signs bode well for me, I really think he could be a bargain this year, and even if he doesnt play, he's 'only' 7.0

I think he will though, i've seen nothing to make me think otherwise.

Kompany is 6.0, in the 'most solid defence in the league', and was incorrectly classed as a midfielder last year. If he was actually a defender, he would have scored more than Vidic.

benayoun looks great but will get subbed on and off surely - 7 million a bargain though agreed. nice points.

hard to tell. i got the feeling he was highly rated on here becuase for fpl purposes people wanted him to be good. one thing they (the panel) haven't mentioned is there was no alex song. song helps take pressure off the likes of djourou. frimpong and ramsey isn't the same shield

Alex Song too often wandered up field and didn't track back, whether that's his fault or the fault of the midfield 3 covering each other, I don't know. But considering how bad he is up the field, I'm guessing the former.

Yeah I agree, Song went from being a reasonably solid defensive mid to a more box to box player and often left the defence exposed. Not sure if that was his poor positioning, or whether it was Wenger's idea. Either Arsenal were a more formidable side with a dedicated defensive mid.

Lol @ this site. It's just one person's prediction on who'll play & their scores. For instance choosing Luiz or Valencia will drive your total way down because they don't think they'll play.

And by these projections both Taarabt and Sinclair will outscore the likes of Malouda, Bale, Nasri and Modric after 10 games.

These same projections would have scored Boselli higher than the likes of Drogba, Berbatov, Chamakh and Carroll this time last year. The year before that Michael Carrick was in everyone's team as the 7.5m "bargain".
