The departure of Charles N’Zogbia may have left a huge void within Wigan’s squad but in Victor Moses the club may well have a natural replacement. Certainly that’s the opinion of Latics boss Roberto Martinez who has wasted no time in talking up the abilities of the 20-year-old as he looks to reassure the Wigan faithful ahead of what seems likely to be another turbulent season at the DW Stadium.

Moses has already done his best to live up to the billing; three goals in pre-season, including an eye-catching brace to cap an impressive showing against Al Ahli in Austria on Wednesday has added fuel to the fire. Fantasy managers are now on alert and with Moses classified as a budget midfield option across many of the games, it’s clear that the former Crystal Palace starlet warrants our attention.

While nothing is certain with just over a fortnight to go before the kick-off, it’s clear that Moses is positioning himself to make his mark. Martinez has set the scene, lavishing praise on his £2.5m capture in the light of recent pre-season performances; the Wigan boss has few doubts that, in Moses, he has a player capable of providing the kind of individual attacking verve so often delivered by N’Zogbia…

“He’s a special talent…It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability…Charlie [N’Zogbia] has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up…Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”

Opportunity knocks for Moses then, but can he grasp it and provide the inspiration for Wigan and rich returns for Fantasy investors?

Key Factors

  • Moses is available as a budget option. Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game with largely defensive players such as Cheik Tiote, Lucas and Nigel De Jong in the same bracket; there’s little doubt that Moses is an attractive Fantasy proposition amongst that kind of company.

  • Wigan’s fixtures provide ample opportunity for Moses to raise his profile and FPL value. Incredibly, Martinez’s side face all three promoted sides in their first three Gameweeks. As they found with Blackpool last season (losing 0-4 on the opening day), that can be a double-edged sword but Wigan will be expected to craft opportunities in all three matches, giving Moses the chance for returns.

  • The pre-season has confirmed that Moses is growing in stature. N’Zogbia’s departure has opened the way for a definite starting role and increased responsibility and, on the evidence so far, Moses is relishing the prospect.

  • While Moses has, to this point, failed to make an impact in terms of raw statistics and Fantasy output, that can be attributed to the fact that his opportunities have been severely limited. Despite making 21 league appearances last season, Moses was given just 8 starts; he was subbed in every one of those games, often just after the hour-mark.

  • Right now Wigan’s attacking options look limited. Just as N’Zogbia’s ball carrying abilities and direct style of play had him stand out within Wigan’s lineup, Moses has shown similar talents that could see him emerge as the Latics’ key threat to opponents. It’s clear from analysis of last season’s performance statistics that Moses will need to raise his game – to make a significant step up in his end product. Renewed confidence from a prolonged run in the side could provide the impetus for that. A risk then, but at his budget Fantasy valuation, certainly a tempting one.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have an inkling he may have to contest the lb spot with Olsson, who could move back there from midfield.

There's probably Blackburn fans out there - and they'll be better placed than me to advise - but Salgado may be a better bet at the same price?

Pretty decent fixtures for Blackburn though.

They used to have a complicated system at Arsenal in the invincibles era, something to do with not taking it if you won it.

In reality, Henry and Pires should have just stepped aside and let iceman Lauren take them all.

Definitely. I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot barge pole while he's at City - but put him in say, Fulham's team and you'd be mad not to have him.

Such a shame that teams hoard talented players.

I'm not sure what the protocol is for posting team review requests. Do I just throw it up on whatever the latest thread is in the comments section?

Ok so after a lot of help last night this is where I'm at and any help is welcome since I'm a complete n00b to EPL and fantasy gaming.

    Given
    Samba-Hughes-Kompany
    Moses-Sessegnon-Malouda-Downing
    Aguero-Ba-Van Persie

    Reserves: Ruddy-Barton-Simpson-Bramble

This is my potential gw1 setup. Thanks again for any input.

      I like this team.

The only constructive criticism I cant think of is that I'm not keen on Ruddy. I can't see Norwich keeping a lot of clean sheets.

Samba is expensive too for a Blackburn player.

Well I had Cahill instead of Samba but a tip about the Bolton fixtures convinced me to make the switch. Ruddy seemed good as he's inexpensive and a tip convinced me he was a good rotation partner for Given.

Once again I'm a n00b and a lot of this is from varying opinions and the best information I was able to extract. I can't thank you enough for your feedback.

        Cheers!

I might leave RVP until GW4, and have a striker with easier opening three. Otherwise depending on transfers/team changes etc it really could be worth a punt.

Never having played before the ease of moving players in and out of the squad is unknown to me. My game day setup plays all three strikers at the same time so "going with the rest" would mean a transfer correct?

Just didn't know if I could transfer him back in on gw4 without a problem. Thanks very much for the insight and I'll start looking at it immediately.

Nasri 'Update': Central vs. Wide vs. Sell to Man City

    Some feedback from game:
"this guy couldn't create a hotmail account, let alone a goal scoring opportunity for our forwards"
"He can still be a top class attacking midfielder, but his game needs to be direct: focused on running in behind defenders, getting in the box, scoring goals. He cannot replace Cesc. There is no doubt that we'd be better off cashing in on him now than persisting with him at AM playing as he has done so far before leaving for free next year"

He slows down our play and should be wide or sold. Ramsey+Wilshere would be more efficient centrally and allow us to utilise our increasing pace and directness out wide.

...however, we went through a lot to get Nasri and Wenger takes unmotivated players too personally... I am braced for another Cesc-esque indulgence, whereby Nasri gets to play where he wants to the detriment of the team. Hope not. Once Ramsey is up to speed, should be his position.

Some Romanian programmer figured out that Wales were 0.07 points too high and that was enough to swau it 😆

        True story.

Lets be honest, we're all rivals. To that end - shouldn't we all stop posting our teams?

The scavengers are there perched and waiting, ready to swoop in and steal our kills. They lack conscience, and basic morals. Watch your backs.

I'm definitely one of those clueless people just trying to educate myself and I sincerely appreciate all of the help and insight. However I don't think you'd need to worry too much as just having a team hasn't instructed me on how to play them, when to make subs, how to handle transfers, how to read fixture lists and predict results.

Having a decent side is just a way to get us new players started and we sincerely thank you all who are willing to share.

      Peace!

you must be a pool fan, i would go with either Adam or Kuyt, possibly Adam with Gerrard out as Adam will be firing crosses left right and centre into Carroll and he should be on pens

Haha! Man U fan actually, believe it or not. Yeah, I had the same feeling about Adam. Thought Kuyt was in great form towards the end of last season and was hoping he might carry it on. Kinda hard to know who's a definite starter in that midfield now though.

Maybe take a bit of money out of your defense - difficult to justify five relatively high priced defenders, as you may be better off with one or two big money defenders, with three cheap options to rotate in.

That should give you some cash to invest in midifeld and attack - and I'd maybe look at dropping Kuyt. He was great when he was up front last season, but once he's back on the wing he'll get a lot less points.

Whitehead is a bit of an odd choice, too. Moses/Taraabt/Barton probably offer better value in that price bracket.

Up front, Ameobi may struggle for minutes and Ba could be a fairly straightforward swap.
