The departure of Charles N’Zogbia may have left a huge void within Wigan’s squad but in Victor Moses the club may well have a natural replacement. Certainly that’s the opinion of Latics boss Roberto Martinez who has wasted no time in talking up the abilities of the 20-year-old as he looks to reassure the Wigan faithful ahead of what seems likely to be another turbulent season at the DW Stadium.

Moses has already done his best to live up to the billing; three goals in pre-season, including an eye-catching brace to cap an impressive showing against Al Ahli in Austria on Wednesday has added fuel to the fire. Fantasy managers are now on alert and with Moses classified as a budget midfield option across many of the games, it’s clear that the former Crystal Palace starlet warrants our attention.

While nothing is certain with just over a fortnight to go before the kick-off, it’s clear that Moses is positioning himself to make his mark. Martinez has set the scene, lavishing praise on his £2.5m capture in the light of recent pre-season performances; the Wigan boss has few doubts that, in Moses, he has a player capable of providing the kind of individual attacking verve so often delivered by N’Zogbia…

“He’s a special talent…It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability…Charlie [N’Zogbia] has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up…Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”

Opportunity knocks for Moses then, but can he grasp it and provide the inspiration for Wigan and rich returns for Fantasy investors?

Key Factors

  • Moses is available as a budget option. Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game with largely defensive players such as Cheik Tiote, Lucas and Nigel De Jong in the same bracket; there’s little doubt that Moses is an attractive Fantasy proposition amongst that kind of company.

  • Wigan’s fixtures provide ample opportunity for Moses to raise his profile and FPL value. Incredibly, Martinez’s side face all three promoted sides in their first three Gameweeks. As they found with Blackpool last season (losing 0-4 on the opening day), that can be a double-edged sword but Wigan will be expected to craft opportunities in all three matches, giving Moses the chance for returns.

  • The pre-season has confirmed that Moses is growing in stature. N’Zogbia’s departure has opened the way for a definite starting role and increased responsibility and, on the evidence so far, Moses is relishing the prospect.

  • While Moses has, to this point, failed to make an impact in terms of raw statistics and Fantasy output, that can be attributed to the fact that his opportunities have been severely limited. Despite making 21 league appearances last season, Moses was given just 8 starts; he was subbed in every one of those games, often just after the hour-mark.

  • Right now Wigan’s attacking options look limited. Just as N’Zogbia’s ball carrying abilities and direct style of play had him stand out within Wigan’s lineup, Moses has shown similar talents that could see him emerge as the Latics’ key threat to opponents. It’s clear from analysis of last season’s performance statistics that Moses will need to raise his game – to make a significant step up in his end product. Renewed confidence from a prolonged run in the side could provide the impetus for that. A risk then, but at his budget Fantasy valuation, certainly a tempting one.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ok so I had some more great feedback today and I have some specific queries:

    Balotelli and Dzeko
    or
    Aguero and Ba

Also got a tip from redlfc about the rotation of Malouda (10.5) and Downing (8.5) and I'm wondering about options to better mitigate the risk.

    Thanks ya'll.

Aguero and Ba definitely. Dzeko is unlikely to make starts and same with Balotelli. You'd imagine Aguero will be a regular starter with or without Tevez.

Not sure you'd want to rotate 2 players so expensive. probably looking at playing them week in week out.

Aguero and Ba, the other two are rotation risks.

I'm playing three four three and currently my front are Van Persie-Ba-Aguero but I had some tips on maybe replacing VP for first 3 weeks and also that Ba might not be a good choice.

I currently have a pretty similar team to yours. I'm going to go for Rooney until GW4 and then look at changing him to RVP.

I have Ba currently but am looking at ways to save myself 0.5m to get Zamora instead.

RVP is fixture proof his on corners, FK and pens. Has scored home and away. Rooney scores in patches, he may get 5 or so in 4 games but u may have to wait 7 games between them.

I wouldn't worry too much about Malouda being rotated. He doesn't have very much competition on the left wing and he's by far their best player in that position.

Difficult to say about Downing, but he's clearly Dalglish's man after he kept upping his bid, so I'd say he would be first choice ahead of Maxi and the left wing berth is his to lose.

Well I could switch out Downing for Silva and RVP for Torres or even Carroll or Bent either of which would leave me one more point with which to play.

      2 Vermaelen Hughes Luiz
      RVP Odemwingie

      3 Huth Hughes Luiz

Since the rest of the players are the exact same for the rest of the team. I wouldn't even go for any of those I would change it to:

I suggest you watch them v Barcalona that should indicate a line-up we could see when the season starts.

Your suggestion for players doesn't work for my team. As Kompany would take man city players up to four and there wouldn't be enough money for both Aguero and Rooney as that would take me 1 Million over.

much more level playing field. years ago lot of the eastern bloc players could generally only play in their own countries which probably didn't help them too much, whereas nowadays if they are good enough the big teams will go for them. that brings a lot of players into better leagues than they were accustomed too, thats one point.

Depends on what career, but generally:

Far more people graduate from uni, therefore that is devalued.

Qualifying is a necessary threshold in some industries, but nothing beats a bit of self-belief and a lot of hard work...

I've got £2.5m still in the bank. Any ideas what I could spend it on?

    Given Ruddy

Maybe look at Downing in midfield instead of Taarabt. Strikeforce is pretty weak, although could go well with fixtures and pen duties.

Tough one, Rooney could score loads he looks in great form and I mean great not like the start of last season at all.

Suarez is a risk in my opinion for the starting few games and Silva could well produce a lot or nothing at all. I would go for A personally.

      2) You can make lots of posts about whether team news is in

      3) At 3pm you can follow your points and madly make posts when you think one of your team has assisted but isn't sure

      4) Discuss who should get bonus points before they're given

      5) Go mental on here after the games about wrongly given bonus points

      6) Discuss whether you should make early transfers to avoid price increases

      7) Start all over about what transfers to make and make posts on here asking if others think it's the correct move. Only difference is, you can't click the confirm transfers button until you're sure

Had an interview for a bank yesterday (standard job), went well, got called back in later that day to see the area manager but no job offer, he was concerned about me buggering off for a graduate position so fingers crossed I get a positive call on Monday.

downing has a beast (caroll) to aim for in the centre which would give him several assists. ba got 7 goals in 933 minutes last season, which would only have to increase now because he'll have better providers.

Hard to know if we don't know the balance of your squad.

Personally, I wouldn't be getting Modric whilst at Spurs, not enough goals and seems to dictate the play but without providing the last pass.

Bale has gone amazingly quiet and could be a nice differential, but the stats show that, like modric, he can be the best player on the aprk without the fantasy returns you'd expect.

Downgrading further to an N'Zogbia, Barton, Etherington, O'Hara, Brunt etc - whilst not the signing you'd make as a club- are better fantasy prospects imo.

        Samba-Hughes-Kompany (Simpson-Bramble)
        Moses-Sessegnon-Malouda-Downing (Barton)
        Van Persie-Ba-Aguero

gibbs is a potential starter but the team is of decent quality.

bosingwa is an unlikely starter but the team is of brilliant quality.

hence when you're taking one, you sacrifice the other. now take your pick.

Torres, Rooney and Aguero up front and a pretty balanced side. Happy days.

Now watch fecking Foster be valued at 5+ and piss in my chips.

Well aye, but all the earlier incarnations had cheap enough mids. Here it is anyway

Given, Myhill (hoping Foster will be 4.5)
Clichy, Kompany, Bramble (bleurgh) Simpson (meh) Clark/Warnock (5m Villa defender)

N'Zoggers, Barton (poss Cabaye), Sessegnon, Moses, 6m mid

            Torres, Rooney, Aguero.

Foster has no chance of being as low as 4.5m 🙂

It's not that bad I guess even with so much spent up front. But I'm not sure I'd want to risk Torres.

    RVP / Zamora / Rodallega

Being brutal, alot of the sub 7.0 players are FFS bandwagons.

Alcaraz may return the amount of points that you'd expect from Wigan's defence.

Insert Orr instead of Alcaraz and QPR instead of Wigan in the above sentence.

I don't see Duff coming up in anyones RMTs. Ive been to watch Fulham twice in pre-season and hes looked on good form. Anyone know something I don't?

Ive got 6.5 for a midfield slot, have to play them every week.

    Taarabt, Barton, Ramsey, Duff?

I know theyve been playing poor teams in the qualifiers, but he is a class act.

For me, Taarabt is a gamble, so is Sinclair, because altho theyre on pens etc, if the teams struggle, they generally wont score points.

Barton a safe option, but Arsenal home followed by 4/5 away games.

Duff may well be a good choice youre right.
