In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

but not in the hole? from what I've seen wenger's been trying nasri and nasri in the advanced spot.

if walcott misses the start of the season.. i'd have thought that ramsey may start if cesc is absent no?

In competition with Barton for RW and Jonas for LW and as such will be rotated heavily, so not realistic for FPL unfortunately.

He's had a great pre-season for us so far though.

Well he's played in a couple of friendlies so he should be ok to start. I imagine he will get a game too in the absence of Ben Arfa, but it depends what Pardew does with the midfield. He could use Barton on the right as he did last season with Cabaye and Tiote in the centre in some kind of 4-4-2 meaning Jonas will be contending with Marveaux on the left, or he may play 4-5-1 with Cabaye, Tiote, Barton in the centre and Marveaux and Jonas on the wings.
Not sure to be honest. I suppose it depends on whether we bring in another striker. As for the player himself, he is highly rated but has been unlucky with injuries lately. Not seen much of him myself though.

I think they are far more similar then last year. Prices have meant the same players are getting picked. Im trying to look for a differential but it's tough. Doyle is the best i have at the minute. Why can't that suave Italian just play AJ everyweek?

Differentials are all about Anderson and O'hara. Or as SuperDunny calls it 'the worst midfield he's ever seen on here'. No Moses, no Sessegnon then, standard.

I think they're less similar. Sure the same players are getting mentioned, but that's because there's so many RMTs. But the actual teams are generally different.

You're always going to have a batch of players that get picked over the various teams as they're the (potentially) best players

To be honest it really doesn't matter anyway, players that are classed as bandwagons on here (eg Moses) often only have a tiny ownership.
                Moses = 1.3%
                Sessegnon = 1.5%

            Myhill (Foster really), Given
            Simpson, Bramble, Orr, Clichy, Kompany
            Anderson, Zogs, Barton, Sessegnon, Moses
            Torres, Aguero, Rooney

Now obviously Sessegnon/Bramble and Barton/Simpson rotate perfectly, Anderson will stay if Utd don't sign another mid, Barton may become Cabaye if I fancy a punt. But that's the current lineup. 1.0 in the bank.

I'm keeping it for the sec as I imagine Foster will be more than Myhill's 4.5. On top of that it allows me to swap Torres for RVP if necessary.

Marveaux is an issue for me as he's untested in the premier league. Other cheap players i have, O'Hara and Albrighton i know have done the business before. I'm actually more tempted to let Ferguson rot on the bench and upgrade Anderson to a 7m player when Utd inevitably sign a new CM.

Whats up with Ba? Everyone seems to be picking him but he hasn't done anything in pre-season? Or has he not played? Stats are impressive:
Rouen 22 goals in 26 appearences
                    Mouscron 8 in 12
                    Hoffenheim - 37 in 97
                    West Ham - 7 in 12

Dunno, not done much to speak of preseason, though to be fair no-one has done much preseason for us.
He'd be a reasonable pick, 10-15 goals this season I reckon.

It is tough. Had one team with A.Cole, Kompany and Baines. Another with Aguero, Rooney, RVP. Some with no midfielder over 7.5m.

Yeah probably, though there is slightly more chance of a card and possible rotation with Williamson.
To be honest I think there are better places to spend 0.5 on than the difference between Taylor and Simpson.

Hmm I thought Pardew favoured Taylor over Williamson.

Can't see many options for 4.5m with better potential.
Bramble or Givet maybe. Or perhaps Wheater if Bolton's fixtures weren't so tough.

    Balanced squad?

    Given (Moeira)

    A.Cole, Kompany, A.Hughes (Simpson, Orr)

    Taarabt, Silva, O'Hara, Moses (Sessegnon)

    RVP, Torres, Zamora

1.0 in the bank to switch Silva to Malouda for GW2. Torres could also either be swapped for Aguero at a punt or upgraded to Rooney at the expense of Silva to Malouda.

    Balanced enough squad?

This Moses debate comes down to which shit players will you have in your team. Here is a an examples:

    A) Wilkinson, Dyer, Sessegnon

    B) Bramble, Moses, Sinclair

In a way, these are the most interesting decisions.

picking carroll over zamora for the obviously better first 3 fixtures.

He was quite good for Palace a few seasons ago and was rated but hasn't had an extended run in the team for Wigan, mostly because of injury. He's fast and attack minded & should chip in a few assists. And for 5m he's not that much of a risk.

I want penalties at least to fall back on if he's that price. He should hoover up the baps though, and he started scoring decent at the end of last season. I really want him, but maybe a bit too expensive.

Saw him live in Los Angeles last week and he looked world class. Ball on a string. Only player with confidence and creativity in attacking areas and I will guarantee 10+ assists this season from him. The problem, of course, is GOALS and the price tag with the likes of N'Zogbia and others cheaper and proven to score around the same cumulative amount. Another issue is the difficulty captaining him because as PFOR mentioned he's not on PKs. Very much on the fence with him vs Malouda VDV personally for just one spot.

Yeah see above. Reasonable pick, not done much thus far but we've had a shit preseason. FPL prospects very much dependant on whether another striker comes in, if we don't sign anyone else then he could be Andy Carroll-esque for FPL as everything will go through him.

I like Ba. Problem is I can't afford him with my Uber defence.

        Young, Nani, Valencia.

Who's going to get the most games?

        I reckon Young.

Hard to say. Worryingly i thought Young looked very much out of his depth against Barca. Stark contrast to Nani, Welbeck and Cleverley lording it up.

            Aye.

I fancy a punt on Young, but at 10m I will probably regret it.

I'm guessing Nani.. because he's clearly the best player of the 3 😐

My Uber defence of steel is:

Vidic, Alex (might be Luiz) Kompany, Clichy, De Leat (bench fodder)

What'd you think gents? with all these RMTs going on i'm finding it difficult to improve on what I already have. I'm not particularly comfortable with Holt/Alcaraz.

    Kompany A.Cole Alcaraz
    N'Zogbia Lampard Taarabt YayaToure

I think Holt has potential. Certainly looks VFM. Alcaraz has 3 decent fixtures to start with. Think your team is decent. If any suggested change it would be to squeeze in Silva. He looked in great form today.

The transfer window is like an all night Party. When it starts you're incredibly excited and having an awesome time but by the end you're crying in your p*ss in a disused stairwell. Maybe that's just me, but please please please would Modric, Fabregas and Sneijder just sodding move and be done with it. 😡

Like the analogy, for a Newcastle fan its like you go in all you're best clobber (£40m worth) and end up trapped in the corner talking to a boring twat about accountancy or something while everyone else has fun.

RMT - changed it a lot. Gone for a really strong defence, budget mid and decent attack.

    Kenny (Given)
    Baines Cashley Clichy Kompany (Simpson)
    Taraabt Moses Barton Benayoun (Sinclair)
    Aguero RVP (Holt)

OK, defence.. Baines - on set pieces and will keep clean sheets, and will earn a lot of BPs with Ea sports in charge.
Cashley - 2-3 possible cleanies in first 3, could get assists and BPs.
Clichy & Kompany - City defence pretty solid and Kompany will rack up BPs.
Not much to say about the rest of it except I'll be doing Aguero to Torres/Drogba GW2 depending on how chelsea line up in GW1.

    Opinions appreciated.

I like it. The only thing I'd say is that you're locking yourself into playing 4 at the back every week, that is unless you make a few transfers.

Looks ok. Clearly a different strategy to the masses by investing heavily in defence. I am not convinced that Benayoun will get significant game time, one to watch. Also I suspect Clichy may get rotated with Kolarov, will have a better idea next Sunday.

I remember when i doubled up on City when they were at home to Wolves. They conceded 3 goals. Good memories.
