In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

Hola, Moses. Two assists and a goal today. Risk, you all say? Bullocks. Try not to have him.

Look at who they are playing!!!

Wigan had the fewest (every stat related to goal-scoring)last season.

...Now they might be even worse

I was at the game and I personally would highly recommend Moses. Appears to have got the N'Zogbia role now he's gone (Meaning involved in all Wigan attack play)will surely be guaranteed starts now and he's only 5m saving funds for elsewhere what's not to want about him in FPL?

Then again I am a Wigan fan, but if people thought N'Zog was essential then I believe they should be thinking Moses is now too.

As much as I love Mr T(iote) I really can't get why people are picking him for their FPL teams. Sure he is 4.5 but surely last season showed a decent squad is needed?
He picks up a booking a game too. Not the best FPL choice, find another 0.5 and get someone like Moses who at least carries an attacking threat and has nice fixtures.

Mind you I'd love to see him get another glorious screamer of a goal against Arsenal GW1 🙂

People on here seem to be clinging to the mantra "don't spend money in defense" without really looking at what you can get for the money. With Arteta out Baines is on pretty much all set pieces, goes really far up the pitch, crosses a lot; i.e. acts like a midfielder. With good fixtures and classic Chelsea early form much of the same goes for A.Cole. I don't really see the big problem with having those two and 2x 5.0-6-0 mids instead of two cheap defenders and two 7.5-8.5 mids.

    CRICKET BLOGGING
    random, feel free to ignore.
one of the benefits of wordpress is you can see the referer for every hit onto your site, so either where the web address was linked or what was googled to find it. anyway found something of mine translated and put on a chinese football website and not sure what to make of it. seen other articles up on their forum from backpage football, zonal marking etc. they seem to advertise them and get someone to translate them. then when they get someone it gets posted in its own right. http://www.goalhi.com/ that octopus pic on the homepage is mine. i think it's nothing sinister as it gets posted on a forum type way where people then discuss it but there's no trace at all that it's actually mine left on the final translated piece, or no link, nothing. at the very least a tonne of hits from china would be nice (even though hits don't actually equate to anything) but nada.

actually they're filed under a group called 'translation group'. i guess a simple link and letting people use google translator isn't accurate enough which is why they try and get people to properly translate it. still others say orignal link underneath, mine just says: "Original link has been harmonious. . ."
perhaps means i need to put a copyright message up so it at least gets referenced properly

          Hello.

I've not logged on yet. We have an official fpl kick off for our mini league each year and this year it won't happen until this thursday. Not checked any prices or fixtures yet. All I can say is that I crave fpl tinkering more than Attila craves tiote wonder goals, more than jamsiep craves attention and more than AP craves to discuss arsenal

That's why I'm trying to stay away. I already saw a few prices by mistake so I'll have to log off until Thursday now I think. Talk to you then.

Doyle has a couple of decent fixtures and is on pens. He's a good player aswell and could be a bit of a differential. Demba Ba? Naaaahh.

Yossi has potential. He is capable of big scores. Decent fixtures. Name me a 6.5 whose better?

I was majorly stuck around the 7.0 mark and theres not many decent players... if benayoun plays he is ace

I was looking at sunderlands preseason and sess has been a scoring machine i know against lowly oppostion but assured starting position and sunderland did ok last season

theres a few others... I heard with the new BP defensive mids will be doing well with tackles per game so someone like wilshere who may also push forward for assists/goals could be a good option

best to wait and stick with your current team tho

I don't doubt Yossi.. he's in and out of my team at the moment. But I'd worry that Malouda might be competing against him for a starting spot thats all.

I think Duff or Sessegnon are good options to have.. especially with Fulham fixtures.

    RMT

    Al-Habsi/Given
    Bardsley/Hughes/Kompany/Orr/Alcaraz
    VDV/Kalou/Duff/Taarabt/Sinclair
    Bent/Rooney/Rodallega

    Was thinking…
    1. VDV>Malouda cuz of fixtures and VDV knock
    2. Kalou>N’Zogbia to avoid rotation risk.
    3. Rodallega>Zamora because N’Zogbia has left, but Wigan are playing the promoted sides…

Sorry for repost, didn't realize new page.

First RMT of the summer, and last before I head off again tomorrow.

    Given Ruddy
    Cole Kompany Bramble Simpson Gabbidon
    VDV Moses Taarabt N'Zogbia O'Hara
    Rooney Aguero Ba

    0.5 in the bank.

Relatively happy with the squad, although I'm thinking Silva, Bent and Graham instead of N'Zog, Aguero and Ba. With Aguero, I'd probably transfer him out for Torres/Drog but Bent has equally brilliant fixtures in GW 2 and 3 (BLA and WOL). Silva should avoid rotation and Graham has some decent fixtures whenever I need to call on him. VDV --> Malouda is an obvious transfer too.

I'd appreciate some of the more regular posters that I posted with last season to not just ignore this like all the other RMTs. Any thoughts welcome, I need to have a fair idea of what I'm doing because I won't be around much from now until the start of the season.

One of the best I've seen. The two strongest defenders with good rotatables. (I'd rather have Malouda than VDV, and Zamora rather than Ba) but I think you've done extremely well sir!

Thanks mate, makes the next 2 weeks slightly easier 🙂

VDV will become Malouda after GW 1 probably. I'd like Zamora too, but I've put a limit of 6.5 on my 3rd striker for now. O'Hara to Hoolahan could fund it I suppose, but I don't want too many promoted players.

Yeah I think you should rest easy, it really looks good!

If you're planning VDV to Malouda, just get on with it. Another more pressing matter is bound to come up. And you know you'll want to.

I'm also debating Silva and Bent or N'Zog and Aguero. It's a difficult one, but I'm also leaning towards the second.

Enjoy your holiday, and good luck for the 13th.

because he was listed as a midfielder. He would have been one of the highest scoring defenders if he had been correctly listed. Also under the new bonus system he would have mopped up.

Luckily most plebs don't know this so won't get him in.

Yeah definitely, your attack comes at the cost of your defence and midfield. They'd all have to score very big to make up for it, and it's asking a lot for 3 guys to do the job of another 5.

    2. Is it mental to go into the start of FPL without Chelsea attacking coverage? I've got a side I'm quite happy with at the moment but that's the main nagging point in the back of my mind. Personally the only player I would go for is Malouda but it kind of ruins the rest of my side.

      1) I imagine so, Williamson is his main threat but I think (and I believe that Pardew thinks) that Taylor is better. More of a threat from set pieces too. Simpson is more secure and cheaper but less likely to score goals.

      2) Dunno, maybe. I've gone for Torres.

Cheers, that's what I thought. I think he's definetly worth the extra 0.5 with the goal threat, he scored a few at the end of last season I noticed as well today, not expecting that every week but I like the idea of him being able to nick a goal.

Torres could be a great call, but I suppose is considered a gamble, I'm not willing to take at the moment. Lampard isn't worth it to me so only really leaves me with Malouda but I'm just not sure.
