In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

After the first gameweek I am going to get in torres/drogba in for one of my strikers because I want to see what happens against stoke. So just for the first gameweek would you get in Aguero/tevez for city who play Swansea or Carroll/Suarez for Liverpool who play sunderland. Who do you think will get the most points just for the first match and which player from which club.

Drogba will start against Stoke as AVB is wary of their set pieces and Drogba has aerial defensive abilities that Torres does not, Torres will most likely be a half time or 60 minute mark substitute. Personally I'd like to see them both start but I dont see that happening.

Strikers are pretty hard to pick

RVP and Rooney should offer fixture proof choices

Aguero has nice fixtures but is new to the prem

Zamora and Gyan have pretty awesome fixtures

(sorry for re-post, on end of last page)
RMT – changed it a lot. Gone for a really strong defence, budget mid and decent attack.

    Kenny (Given)
    Baines Cashley Clichy Kompany (Simpson)
    Taraabt Moses Barton Benayoun (Sinclair)
    Aguero RVP (Holt)

OK, defence.. Baines – on set pieces and will keep clean sheets, and will earn a lot of BPs with Ea sports in charge.
Cashley – 2-3 possible cleanies in first 3, could get assists and BPs.
Clichy & Kompany – City defence pretty solid and Kompany will rack up BPs.
Not much to say about the rest of it except I’ll be doing Aguero to Torres/Drogba GW2 depending on how chelsea line up in GW1.

    Opinions appreciated.

Baines - agree with you but not 'will keep clean sheets'. Everton will not keep a lot of CS.

What will you do with benayoun and moses flop? IMO downgrade one defender to give yourself some room to move later.

I'm hoping that my opening choice for keepers will be alright for the whole season (or until I WC). I think using a transfer on a keeper is a waste (unless he's injured) So right now it's a coin flip on Given vs Foster.

dya guys this kinda strategy could work because i thought about it and getting a goal with the likes of rooney gets the same points as getting a cleansheet so surely having 4 cs defenders plus attacking def and cs goalie will rack up points every game

is klasnic likeely to start every game ahead of davies? isnt davies on set pieces though

also with nani silva malouda ive got huge attacking points so long as they play

Thats a good team. I dont see why you would go for O'Shea when Bardsley is the same price, I dont see much coming from Moses or Sessegnon but other than that very good, choosing your first team is not the be all and end all though, to do well you must strive throughout the season to succeed, look in your heart Cal-al, you can be the saviour that Earth needs!

Benayoun could be, will be unless we sign Modric, Kaka etc our playmaker, so I see him as a bargain at 7 if thats the case, also, yes Bardsley was rotated but not often, only to be rested, plus when was the last time O'Shea played a whole season? he may not make it through.

cant justify paying 1.5 more for Silva because I dont think his return will be that much greater than yaya... its money better invested elsewhere. Moses love is going to hurt alot of people imo and plus... he is on alot of benches anyway!

Sessegnon will shine this year playing behind big Gyan as this is Sunderlands strongest side since promoted.

    Team so far:

    Given Ruddy

    Rafael Simpson Johnson Hughes Kompany

    N'Zogbia Moses Nani Taarabt Dempsey

    Rooney Rodallega Zamora

Got 2.5 left in the bank, will be changing Ruddy to Al Habsi/Foster when i can so will end up with 1.5/2 left over. Do i save it for second week or spend the lot????

    Also any thoughts:
    1. Berbatov instead of Rooney now Hernandez is out for 4 weeks.
    2. Ramsey in because Fab looks likely to go, Wilshire out for few weeks plus Diaby injury, he would have to take up playmaker role for RVP (assists galore).

Save it imo to upgrade a defender to whoever partners terry or plays RB
Berba move is risky, welbeck is in ok form and playing a fair bit.
Ramsey move could be a stroke of genius.

Gael Clichy, the notorious right back... Yes of course he will, Zabaleta or Richards? Richards all day. Clichy and Kolarov compete for left back, whilst Richards and Zabaleta compete for right back, Richards has the easier task.

Klasnic has scored 5 times in 6 games pre season. Everyone is jumping on Moses because of his form.. Klasnic is in a better side, i mean, yeah he has worse fixtures but he is a striker - 1 chance and that could be +4 to his score. The only other player i want instead is Doyle.

Did you see his stats ? 12 goals in just over 1500 minutes of football in the last two seasons. I think he could hit about 15 this season as long as Coyle doesnt spoil the party and buy another striker.

What will you do if a mid fielder catches fire? It's sometimes good to have a high priced player in each line so that you can transfer in someone on fire without taking a hit? Just a thought.........

Oh and B, without Klasnic. You need 1 top striker (Rooney, RVP, Aguero, Torres etc etc) in there at least

I would say A but only because I am attack minded and B looks very defensive. Also cs were not easy to come by most weeks last season.Oh and A is loaded with Cpt choices.
