Man City hammer Inter as David Silva pulls the strings. Alan Pardew’s unhappy. Wesley Sneijder fails to write off a move away from Inter and Daniel Sturridge wants to stay at the Bridge thanks to a new-found freedom. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Bolton have been linked with a move for Shaun Wright-Phillips following the sickening leg-break injury to Chung Yong-Lee. The Man City star would fit seamlessly into Owen Coyle’s starting XI, though his wages may prove to be a stumbling block. The Trotters’ new signing Chris Eagles can play on the right flank and comes in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), though Coyle has been playing Eagles as a support striker in recent games, meaning a possible right wing role for Gretar Steinsson or Tyron Mears if Coyle fails to bring in re-inforcements. With both listed as 4.5 defenders, it’s a situation worth monitoring.

Staying on the subject of Bolton, Coyle has also been linked with another loan move for Daniel Sturridge as he looks to shuffle his pack. Citing his great relationship with Andre Villas-Boas, Coyle then proceeded to lavish praise on Sturridge, with his admiration for the player very much apparent:

Daniel is such an outstanding young talent but I think he has to play week in, week out now. He’s had six months of being a regular starter with us and he will probably know he’s got to start these games now. I played him through the middle and he was sensational for me. I always felt he wanted to play through the middle…

If Sturridge‘s latest comments are anything to go by, however, Coyle’s pursuit of the player may prove to be a fruitless one. Sturridge seems a happy man under Villas-Boas and in light of the club’s sixth straight pre-season win, has been talking of a new-found freedom to his play:

The manager has given me the licence to express myself and I don’t think I have had that before with any manager. He has let me off the leash and said go out and enjoy yourself. I have a lot more freedom than I have ever had and I think I enjoy my football more..

It is not just me either; everyone feels like that. He wants us to attack and not be too defensive. That is refreshing. The tour has been great. The manager has shown faith in me.

Fantasy managers will be crossing their fingers and hoping Sturridge does depart Stamford Bridge, though; at 6.5 in FPL his performances for Bolton last season suggest he’ll be a real bargain. If he stays at Chelsea, squad rotation looks likely to kill off his Fantasy potential.

Javier Hernandez’s Gold Cup exploits for Mexico and the subsequent rest period was always going to mean the striker had some catching up to do in terms of match fitness. With the striker now sidelined with concussion, his pre-season training schedule has been further disrupted and Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted the player may not be available until the end of August, meaning there’s a chance Hernandez may not see any Premier League game time until game week 4, in mid September:

Javier was always going to get a break until he did his proper pre-season. In a two-week period now he’ll do some training but he won’t play. We’ll have him back in three to four weeks.

Arsenal suffered a scare in yesterday’s draw with New York Red Bulls when Jack Wilshere was withdrawn after only seven minutes with an ankle knock. With Abou Diaby already sidelined for ten weeks and Cesc Fabregas looking likely to exit the Emirates, the last thing Arsene Wenger needs is more injuries to central midfielders. The Gunners boss seemed positive on Wilshere after the match, saying:

It is not very serious. They say he might be out for the whole of next week because he has an ankle inflammation. But he has not torn anything. He is a quick healer usually and a tough boy so I hope he will be quicker than the medical predictions.

The England game is on August 10 and I don’t know [whether he will be available]. They told me he might be out next week. If he is out next week, he will not play against Benfica so he will certainly not play for England.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was far from pleased with his club’s 3-2 loss at Leeds yesterday. Pardew fielded many first-teamers in the Elland Road defeat and despite his disappointment, was full of praise for a couple of his new summer signings after the match:

Sometimes in a game like that you learn more, and I’ve learnt more about individual players today than I have all pre-season. Cabaye was a positive – he played the holding role and you could see that, although he is a great passer, he also has defensive qualities…Demba Ba was good in all he did without actually getting a goal, and Danny Simpson played well.

Steven Taylor showed his scoring capabilities once again for Newcastle. The big centre-half grabbed his side’s first goal and served a reminder of the form that saw him score in each of his side’s final three games last term. At 4.5 in FPL, he looks a decent punt for a low-price defender.

Roberto Mancini was a happy man after Man City’s 3-0 demolition of Inter Milan. With an outstanding David Silva pulling the strings from the right flank and resultantly picking up the man of the match award, Mancini also saw Mario Malotelli and Edin Dzeko find the net as his strikers start to pick up form ahead of next weekend’s Community Shield showdown with Man United.

Post-match, Mancini praised all three players but his most intriguing comments came when the subject of Carlos Tevez arose, suggesting the striker‘s exit may not be as definite as previously thought:

When Carlos comes back on Thursday we will have four strikers fighting for the shirts. That’s good for us. When you are playing in four competitions, we need that.

Wesley Sneijder was somewhat cryptic in yesterday‘s post-match press conference in Dublin, after Inter‘s loss to Man City. The Dutchman has been linked with a move to Man United all summer and although Sir Alex Ferguson seemed to write off the chances of the transfer last week, Sneijder was not quite so pessimistic. When asked if he was likely to remain an Inter player next summer, Sneijder replied:

“What will happen? We will see. There is always a chance that something will happen, but we will see. There is always speculation. I’ve said before, I’ve played for almost 10 years at the highest level and every year there is speculation.”

Blackburn Rovers look set to finally make some leeway in the transfer market over the next few days. With Phil Jones leaving Ewood Park and talk of Chris Samba’s exit, Steve Kean looks to have a positive addition to the Rovers ranks in the form of Dundee United striker David Goodwillie.

    Afternoon all 🙂

Firstly, I'm leaving the country on Wednesday and don't get back until past the deadline. Bearing that in mind, do y'all think it's worth the risk playing the likes of Ivanovic and Suarez? Not looking for opinions if they'll play or not since nobody knows, just whether it's worth the risk as a strategy in general.

Secondly, it's my birthday today! 🙂 Happy birthday me.

Happy Birthday Cooper, You don't want to waste a WC however my plan is too use GW 4/5 as it worked using it early last year. You could plan your team for the first 3/4/5 Gw's with the knowledge you'll be WCing then. Just a thought.

Hmmm, I reckon there will be a statement from Liveprool regarding Suarez, but you wont be able to change your team if it's announced that he will be rested? In that case I'd go for a certain starter.

    Kenny (Given)
    Baines Cashley Clichy Kompany (Simpson)
    Taraabt Moses Barton Benayoun (Sinclair)
    Aguero RVP (Holt)

OK, defence.. Baines – on set pieces and will keep clean sheets, and will earn a lot of BPs with Ea sports in charge.
Cashley – 2-3 possible cleanies in first 3, could get assists and BPs.
Clichy & Kompany – City defence pretty solid and Kompany will rack up BPs.
Not much to say about the rest of it except I’ll be doing Aguero to Torres/Drogba GW2 depending on how chelsea line up in GW1.

    Opinions appreciated.

I think you already know you're going to be told you're too defence heavy. Baines + Cashley + Kompany + 4.0 + 4.0 would already put you on the expensive side, add Clichy to that and you're spending at least 4 mil more than most on here.

Aguero is intested, I wouldn't. Benayoun needs to hold down a spot before he's worth 8m, other than that it's ok.

      Sorry to be mostly negative.

I'm after changing Clichy to Orr, Benayoun to Silva and Aguero to Drogba. I fancy Drogba's chances against Stoke, I think he will start against them because Stoke are a physical team and he'll be taking set pieces too.

Van Persie FPL-wise. From a Man Utd fan. That said, Rooney COULD be pushed up as the main striker in a 4-3-3 for the first few games especially as Hernandez looks to be out. In that case, then the decision becomes 50-50 IMHO.

Is there anyone we should be considering beyond Rooney, Nani? Have you got Man U coverage?

I thought Rooney look V sharp preseason. The only thing I worry about is, to me, AF seems more likely to rotate inform players for the benefit of the season (a few options up front).

Van persie had a very average game yesterday, but scored... I am considering both (as of today!), but not sure it is a good risk management/ top team coverage strategy.

Anybody else sick of these RMT posts?

Can I please suggest you do one of the following:

    1. Narrow it down to the players you're unsure of and ask for preference on these players

    2. Ask a more specific question the answer to which should help with your team selection and which might actually help others (E.g. Is _____ first choice for _____?/ Is _______ on set pieces? etc.)

    3. Give some kind of explanation as to how you came to your team selection *before* asking for advice on it, especially for players who are likely to meet criticism (rather than using these explanations to respond/ defend yourself)

Too many people are just expecting to come on this site and get their team picked/ improved for them with very little personal input/ thought. If that's the aim, just don't play the game.

well - considering his price - i think he may be worth the punt.

If he plays every game in the hole (As seems to be his position) he should be worth closer to 9mil, even more with easy fixtures, so at 7mil it's a risk with a big upside.

Depends on transfers I reckon. If Chelsea don't sign a playmaker(although I think they will) then Benayoun will get game time. AVB seems to like a proper playmaker and Benayoun the only player of that type in the current squad.

      Worth monitoring.

Bit different and I like it. Althought if you're going to spend that much in defence, at least use the money wiser! Gibbs, Hangeland and Cahill are collectively worth 17.5m! I would much rather have a Chelsea defender, cheaper Fulham defender and a Sunderland defender to rotate well with Simpson.

It must be said the midfield is perhaps TOO cheap, but they are decent choices I guess.. apart from the deep-playing Wilshere.

    Given, Al Habsi
    Cashley, Kompany, Hughes, Bramble, STaylor
    Silva, N'Zogbia, Sessegnon, Taarabt, Dyer
    Van Persie, Suarez, Zamora.

Very happy with my defence: Cashley and Kompany will be my stalwarts, and the other 3 rotate very well.

My concerns lie in my front 8: not completely sold on Taarabt & Dyer, but not sure what else to do with just £11m. Also slightly concerned by lack of Chelsea/Man Utd coverage, but price and rotation leave me few options.

    Any comments really greatly appreciated!

I don't think Ashley Cole should be nailed on fantasy teams this year. Yes, he's been the best left back in Prem for years, but with a new manager and Zhirkov in the wings, you don't know what his plans are. I'd expect Cole to be a regular but feature a little less this year.

Good point. Would it be worth downgrading Cole to Luiz and then using the 1m to upgrade a midfielder? If so, who would you recommend?

you need to get malouda in I would downgrade nzogs to moses. then taylor to simpson. which would be 3 mil. Then magically find another 1 mil and upgrade sess or taarbt to malouda

What's the love with Grant Holt? Sure he scored something like 1 in 2 in the Championship but that's poles apart from teams he and Norwich will be up against in the Premier League.

Didn't we see the same thing a few years back with everyone jumping on the Ebanks-Blake express?

I know prices are tough this year but you simply have to budget an extra 0.5m for Doyle or 1m for a Rodallega as your third striker.

I'll be playing it safer with 2 expensive forwards and 2 expesnive mids. More room to chop and change if it all goes belly up.

It's looking like I'll be going with:

            Def 2/3 x 6m
            Mid 2 x 9-10m
            For 12m, 9-10m

I agree that it gives greater scope to swap in a player regardless of price.

Hey Chill Pill, good luck with the coming season.

Wasn't Doyle out injured for quite lengthy spells last year? Whenever I had the misfortune of watching Wolves, Doyle always looked to be carrying the team. They should be improved this year with O'Hara and Johnson so I can see returns for Doyle.

Is there anywhere I can read up in detail about the new EA PPI bonus point system allotment. I saw a couple of posts back a fella saying Baines would be worth a lot w.r.t. EA PPI.

The three best performing players in each match according to the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index will receive additional bonus points. 3 points will be awarded to the highest scoring player, 2 to the second best and 1 to the third.

Bonus points will be awarded the morning after the matches are played.

Examples of how bonus point ties will be resolved are as follows:

If there is a tie for first place, Players 1 & 2 will receive 3 points each and Player 3 will receive 1 point.
If there is a tie for second place, Player 1 will receive 3 points and Players 2 and 3 will receive 2 points each.
If there is a tie for third place, Player 1 will receive 3 points, Player 2 will receive 2 points and Players 3 & 4 will receive 1 point each.

At the moment surely we should all wait and see what happens on the transfers front before further tinkering. The one big recent transfer has been Aguero and im sure lots of teams have changed because of that.

    Example - If Chelsea do/don't sign a midfielder - Benayoun is/isn't a good choice.

Same with Arsenal and Ramsey depending on ins and outs.

For all we know United will sign Sneider and ALL of the RMT on here will change.

I for one, have now decided that Im not goign to tinker any more till late next week.

Also we've lost Sturridge and Elmander so as of yet are painfully light up front, Cahill might be on the way, our best player last year (Lee) is out for 9 months and most of our signings have been from the Championship. I'm not feeling overwhelmingly optimistic. I suppose there's still time!

Will get games but not points. Same with Tiote - I know he's cheap but will get nothing but cards.

Lots of options for 6 - 6.5 mids who are playing for lesser teams but more chances of attacking returns and on set pieces.

Disagree. Tiote will hover up the BAPs with the new EA Sports rating system, imo.

Generally, defensive midfielders will be recognised more in terms of fantasy points than in previous seasons. Should be interesting.
