Blackburn Rovers finally made their first foray into the transfer market on Wednesday by completing the signing of 22-year-old striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.

The young Scottish international joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed sum, rumoured to involve an initial fee of £2 million with various add-ons included.

Rovers fans at last have themselves a cause for optimism then, having waited patiently for the club’s owners and manager Steve Kean to bolster a squad that has already lost Phil Jones and several squad members over the summer.

In David Goodwillie, Blackburn have an outstanding prospect. Recognised as the best young player in Scotland in consecutive seasons, the Tannadice striker was hot property going into this campaign and, as Rangers prepared an improved offer for a player who has previously haunted them on the pitch, Blackburn swooped to seal a deal to bring Goodwillie south of the border.

Speaking in his first interview for the club, Goodwillie played down his early season prospects whilst clearly relishing the opportunity to impress on the Premier League stage…

“I feel ready. It’s up to the manager and we’ll see what happens. It will be massive and I think the first few games will be difficult for me…I’m really lively. I’ve got energy and I will just try my best and look to bang in a few goals.â€

The Statistics

Goodwillie made his debut for Dundee United back in 2005 at the age of 15 – the youngest player to appear for the first team in the history of the club. He went on to make numerous appearances from the bench that season and was largely used from the bench the following year before being sent out to Raith Rovers on loan in 2007. He returned to Tannadice having scored 9 goals in 21 appearances for the Second division outfit – a hint at his potential which was only realised at Dundee United in the 2009-10 season.

By that stage he’d established himself as a regular starter and notched 3 goals in the first 5 games, scoring a dozen goals by April; that was enough to earn him the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Year award for that season.

He was to follow that up with the SPFA Young Player of the Year award last term. Goodwillie announced himself in 2010/11 by scoring in six consecutive matches, prompting United to slap a hefty price tag on his head. The suitors duly came circling as Goodwillie ended the season with 18 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. It was clear that his tenure at Tannadice was coming to an end.

The Prospects

Goodwillie should certainly be given every opportunity to impress. With Nikola Kalinic seemingly set for an Ewood Park exit, Steve Kean really only has Jason Roberts as a recognised striker – that shouldn’t present too big an obstacle for the burgeoning talents of Goodwillie; we should expect an early debut for the Rovers new boy and home matches against Wolves and Everton in the first three present a decent platform.

The player himself is right to be cautious over his early prospects, however. The jump from the Scotish top flight to the Premier League is a daunting one and Goodwillie will undoubtedly be faced with tougher opponents and perhaps more limited service than he is used to. The creative talents of Morten Gamst Pedersen and Junior Hoilett will be crucial to his prospects and if Steve Kean invests in an attacking outlook, Goodwillie could yet receive the ammunition which can be converted into goals.

At 5ft 9inches, Goodwillie is not target man material, but North of the Border he developed a reputation as a player who was rarely bullied off the ball and who possesses an icy quality when presented with an opportunity in front of goal. He was also capable of the spectacular, demonstrated by a stunning overhead kick in the Scotish Cup tie with Motherwell which drew comparisons with Wayne Rooney and ample praise from Dundee United boss Peter Houston…

“He’s got that ability in him and he can be anything he wants to be so long as he gets himself sorted out off the park.”

Houston’s reference to Goodwillie’s off the field entanglements is a worthy sidenote. At 22-years-old, he’s already been involved in a string of controversies, including a charge for an alleged rape – a case which hung over him last season. Goodwillie’s arrival in England and a lucrative new contract will offer opportunities for the striker to stray into trouble once more – his discipline off the field could well be crucial to his prospects on it.

Fantasy managers should expect a low-to-mid price valuation as Goodwillie arrives as a largely unknown quantity with the potential to make an impact. Having already made three appearances for Dundee United this season he will be fit and ready to announce himself on his new stage. Whether he can live up to his billing on the pitch and steer clear of trouble off it, remains to be seen.

    Gday lads!

Sorry, just before I get off the computer, could I please have a RMT. I don't do them very often.

    Foster Given
    Ivanovic Kompany Bramble Orr Simpson
    VDV N'Zog Sessgnon O'Hara Moses
    RVP Rooney A.Johnson

Taking a punt in Johnson, N'Zog could be turned into Yaya if not fit, and the defence rotates well.
    Thanks

So let's recap on that night of nights:

A14 posts a bogus Spurs line up with no Bale.
People then got rid of Bale in their perry groves.
This causes the FPL to crash.
This in turn, then causes the FFS to crash.
Lots of people unable to change their teams.
            The truth is out.

I’m not going to put him in from day 1 anyway but he could be a good option.

Alberto Aquilani does not exist as far as FPL goes. If FPL use the same reasoning on price as they have for Joe Cole then he should be available on the cheap.

He’s been LFC’s main man in pre season.

    Any thoughts?

Thoughts on opting for a cheaper front line?

eg. Suarez Gyan Holt instead of having a big gun in there...

Suarez proved he could score just as much as RVP and will probably assist more and Gyan is also very dangerous aerially and on the ground.

Has this ever worked for anyone?

If Hernandez is out they will probably go 433 - at a guess they'll have a front three of Nani -- Rooney -- Young, but I would imagine that Rooney will be the best bet for investment early on.

I've got some spare cash and Brunt's first 2 games are terrible. I've got 7.5 to spend.

I've got no Man UTD players and I can't stop looking at Park as a great option, especially as the rest of my team is so generic. Park, when fit usually plays and when he does he's brilliant. He's had a great pre-season too. Any thoughts?

Brunt's opening game is not that bad.

United are not that strong defensively away from home (they're good but not unstoppable) and WBA score well at home.

Park is a great player i'll agree, but he's far from a regular in the United team and not a great FPL scorer, far better and more reliable options for his price imo at 7m?

Ordered something from US and I think it must be held in customs because it's over the value limit for things to come straight through (which appears to be only £9- I've not got anything fancy).

The Royal Mail website doesn't tell me what to do, so does anyone know how I can get my parcel?! Someone must have had the same thing...

You might have to pay import duty - but I don't think that would hold the parcel up. Probably best to go down to the post office, even though royal mail workers are generally window licking imbeciles.

      Hope that helps 🙂

i've had that happen - you should get a letter if you have to pay import duty. it'll give you a code to pay on the net then they will release the parcel if i remember correctly.

Someone who is not getting much attention on the Forum is Walters. He is playing OOP as a striker and comes in at £6 Million.

What do people think of him as a prospect? Obviously a lot depends on whether Stoke land another forward such as Bendtner.

He's an unusual hybrid of striker/defensive midfielder.

Not one for me, but if OOP is what floats your boat then go for it. You could do a lot worse at that price.

Oh definitely. Not sure who yet but will likely be one of this lot: Robinson, Samba, Olsson, Dunn, Formica, Hoilett or Davey Badcock.

If Kean starts Olsson LM/LW i think he may well be the pick of our players this season

You should apply for the job when Steve Kean (inevitably) gets the chop.

Can't understand why Olsson doesn't play LM anyway. It's his best position by a mile

No need to flush Hoilet away just yet. Very little chance of Goodwillie sending him for an early golden shower.

Jason Roberts place is probably under threat...but Hoilet tends to play either as a winger or moved in when shifting to a two man attack.

Also Bosingwa, will he play this year? In pre-season it looks like he is being favoured.

Seems a massive shame to have a token 4.5 player when you only get three strikers, especially when there are decent options for just 5.5.

And no, there aren't ant 4.5 strikers who will play.

In terms of Bosingwa - you'd be investing in a huge rotation risk - probably best to wait and see

I've still got 1.0 to spare, but I want to keep it for changes after the first gameweek.

What about Swansea who only have 3 strikers:

        Graham 5.0
        Beattie 4.5
        Moore 4.5

Thanks, I might give Bosingwa a miss then!

gallas is probably the smallest goal threat of those, so you can forget him.

enrique, bardsley, oshea and warnock all have attacking potential, but among those warnock and enrique (at new) by far have the most favorable opening fixtures. a close look at the fixtures will show that of those teams (new, sun, sun, avl), both avl and new have good fixtures in both attacking (3rd and 5th best in league, respectively) and clean sheet terms (1st and 2nd in league, respectively), whereas sun are 7th in both categories. if enrique goes to liv, he goes WAY down the list on fixture strength.

long story short, go for warnock, bardsley, enrique or oshea. as oshea is a fitness doubt for the opening of the season, that list gets cut to warnock, enrique or bardsley. on fixtures, you can narrow down to warnock or enrique, and then toss a coin.

as a sidenote, the members' ticker is amazing! pay up all you loafers!
