Blackburn Rovers finally made their first foray into the transfer market on Wednesday by completing the signing of 22-year-old striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.

The young Scottish international joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed sum, rumoured to involve an initial fee of £2 million with various add-ons included.

Rovers fans at last have themselves a cause for optimism then, having waited patiently for the club’s owners and manager Steve Kean to bolster a squad that has already lost Phil Jones and several squad members over the summer.

In David Goodwillie, Blackburn have an outstanding prospect. Recognised as the best young player in Scotland in consecutive seasons, the Tannadice striker was hot property going into this campaign and, as Rangers prepared an improved offer for a player who has previously haunted them on the pitch, Blackburn swooped to seal a deal to bring Goodwillie south of the border.

Speaking in his first interview for the club, Goodwillie played down his early season prospects whilst clearly relishing the opportunity to impress on the Premier League stage…

“I feel ready. It’s up to the manager and we’ll see what happens. It will be massive and I think the first few games will be difficult for me…I’m really lively. I’ve got energy and I will just try my best and look to bang in a few goals.â€

The Statistics

Goodwillie made his debut for Dundee United back in 2005 at the age of 15 – the youngest player to appear for the first team in the history of the club. He went on to make numerous appearances from the bench that season and was largely used from the bench the following year before being sent out to Raith Rovers on loan in 2007. He returned to Tannadice having scored 9 goals in 21 appearances for the Second division outfit – a hint at his potential which was only realised at Dundee United in the 2009-10 season.

By that stage he’d established himself as a regular starter and notched 3 goals in the first 5 games, scoring a dozen goals by April; that was enough to earn him the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Year award for that season.

He was to follow that up with the SPFA Young Player of the Year award last term. Goodwillie announced himself in 2010/11 by scoring in six consecutive matches, prompting United to slap a hefty price tag on his head. The suitors duly came circling as Goodwillie ended the season with 18 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. It was clear that his tenure at Tannadice was coming to an end.

The Prospects

Goodwillie should certainly be given every opportunity to impress. With Nikola Kalinic seemingly set for an Ewood Park exit, Steve Kean really only has Jason Roberts as a recognised striker – that shouldn’t present too big an obstacle for the burgeoning talents of Goodwillie; we should expect an early debut for the Rovers new boy and home matches against Wolves and Everton in the first three present a decent platform.

The player himself is right to be cautious over his early prospects, however. The jump from the Scotish top flight to the Premier League is a daunting one and Goodwillie will undoubtedly be faced with tougher opponents and perhaps more limited service than he is used to. The creative talents of Morten Gamst Pedersen and Junior Hoilett will be crucial to his prospects and if Steve Kean invests in an attacking outlook, Goodwillie could yet receive the ammunition which can be converted into goals.

At 5ft 9inches, Goodwillie is not target man material, but North of the Border he developed a reputation as a player who was rarely bullied off the ball and who possesses an icy quality when presented with an opportunity in front of goal. He was also capable of the spectacular, demonstrated by a stunning overhead kick in the Scotish Cup tie with Motherwell which drew comparisons with Wayne Rooney and ample praise from Dundee United boss Peter Houston…

“He’s got that ability in him and he can be anything he wants to be so long as he gets himself sorted out off the park.”

Houston’s reference to Goodwillie’s off the field entanglements is a worthy sidenote. At 22-years-old, he’s already been involved in a string of controversies, including a charge for an alleged rape – a case which hung over him last season. Goodwillie’s arrival in England and a lucrative new contract will offer opportunities for the striker to stray into trouble once more – his discipline off the field could well be crucial to his prospects on it.

Fantasy managers should expect a low-to-mid price valuation as Goodwillie arrives as a largely unknown quantity with the potential to make an impact. Having already made three appearances for Dundee United this season he will be fit and ready to announce himself on his new stage. Whether he can live up to his billing on the pitch and steer clear of trouble off it, remains to be seen.

What are our thoughts on Valencia.

When fit i rate him as highly as Nani and Young, if not more so and he is only 8 mill as opposed to 10 mill for the other two.

    A bargain surely? (barring rotaion........)

      Hi Hodge.

O'Hara if you plan to rotate with Moses.
Sinclair if you plan to rotate with Taarabt.

It's a solid team. Your defence is so cheap though that you'll be playing 3 at the back most weeks. If you then rotate Moses and O Hara does that mean you will be playing Taraabt and Holt every gameweek without respite. Same goes for if you rotate Taraabt and Sinclair will you then be playing Moses and Holt every gameweek withut respite.

      Something to consider.

A few notes from Fulham's game with RNK Split yesterday-

Briggs came on as a sub for Dempsey at left-wing. Contrary to my firm belief we wouldn't see much of him with the other personnel we have available, I may have to revise that opinion. Feel quite safe in saying he's only ever likely to make the bench still though.

Senderos partnered Hangeland again, shifting hughes to right-back. As we've not seen much at all of Baird in our pre-season/Europa matches I suspect this may well be how we start the season and with Senderos costing just 4.5 he is a fantastic option for a budget squad-filler, especially when we're at home.

Aj looked very lively too, optimistic for a decent partnership developing with Zamora.

Side-note, our new signing Pajtim Kasami came on for all of 5 minutes and looks a fantastic prospect. Not necessarily talking in FF terms, but for Fulham in general. Don't know what it is, but some playes just have an 'aura' about them and he really looks the part. Hope to see a lot more of him, could be a big player for us I think.

I'll definitely be going for Senderos if it looks like he'll be a regular starter. Nice fixtures, and a great price. What's he like at corners and stuff? I guess it's too much to ask for goals too? 🙂

think you could probably find a better keeper combo...neither ful nor sun have the best clean sheet potential in the 1st quarter of the season and don't rotate that well in terms of match difficulty. home/away is decent, but you have a fair amount of matching blues and then matching greys/reds.

naughton could be ok, rafael could be subject to rotation, arsenal's defense doesn't inspire so much confidence, and luiz could also be a rotation risk.

valencia, rotation, routledge, risky and relatively unproven, wilshere, rotation.

sturridge, banned for first 3 GWs. suarez rested perhaps GW1 and/or GW2.

all of the above may work out in your favor, but if a few of them don't, you'll be cursing yourself for not having chosen nailed on, proven FPL assets.

      Extremely dodgy mate.

      - Slightly odd keeper pairing. Could function but Mignolet faces stiff competition for his place from Westwood. Avoid.
      - Rethink this defence. Rafael and Luiz are just for people who can't afford Vidic and Cole/Terry. They have question marks over their head and are worth avoiding until the picture becomes clearer.
      - Valencia played at the Copa America. Got injured and is therefore very unlikely to start the season with United. Wilshere as a deep lying mid may not be worth the cash although his stock will improve if Fabs and Nasri go. Routledge faces competition from Dyer and Sinclair for his place.
      - Sturridge is likely to be a super sub for Chelsea and therefore not worth it. Suarez doesn't look like starting the season for the Pool.

Sorry if I seem harsh. Very questionable selections here though.

gibbs, luiz and rafael a tad risky - pick one and use the cash left on nailed on starters/performers suck as Samba, Jags, Cahill, Dunne, Huth, Kompany, Clichy.

Like the Mids but again there is a risk with Nzog and Valencia not starting. Might be worth a rethink there.

Finally Sturridge is banned for the first 3 games - look at Holt, Grahem, A Johnson or alike.

ABs and Ozzie will be a close game I feel - 1-12 pts looks a reasonable margin. Queensland Reds won the Super 15 this year and Ozzy have definitely improved. Got a strong 15 but no bench. ABs will dominate line outs and scrums.

I don't get all this too risky business. Now is the best time to take a few risks, it's not like it's November when we all have 7 injuries and 3 suspensions and half the games called off. We all have a full squad, a wildcard which loads of people play early on anyway, everything has an element of risk to it at the start of the new season so a few untested players aren't going to ruin your season, and QPR snd Wigan have realllllly good fixtures right from the start. Taraabt and Moses are definitely gonna start in my team, and a few other "risks".

Ps sorry for the ugly post, i'm on my phone having a poo

Hey guys sorry for the RMT but got a selection headache

    GIVEN (RUDDY)
    KOMPANY CASHLEY HUGHES (SIMPSON BARDSLEY)
MALOUDA MOSES SILVA TAARABT (N DYER)
    CARROLL RVP HOLT

My team feels naked. No Lampard (position), Baines (exp), Tevez (d1k), general man city striker (aguero unproven here, balotelli a d1k and dzeko useless last term), nani-valencia-young (one has to miss out) etc

Such a ruddy (he's in there) headache. Am i making a massive mistake? Have i missed something coz this team looks lightweight :/

Villa attack...was that a question? Watched them a bit this pre-season n they barely attacked. Bent doesnt look as impressive as a lot on here suggest but cheers. Maybe Nzogbia could add to the fire?

Fair comment on silva really. But who is better for that price or moses? No-one i can think of.

If something is awry with the team that is super! Just tell me an alternative coz i really cant see them.

P.s. i will not put darren bent in my team.

Same backline as me, I might get Enrique in for Hughes if he's assured a start in GW1 and rotate him with Bardsley/O'Shea.

I would say that Moses AND N Dyer is a bit risky. I'd change Carroll as you can get better value for money elsewhere (Rodallega, Odemwingie, Zamora). Use the money to upgrade Moses/Dyer/Holt and I think you've got a good team considering fixtures and security.

I wouldn't personally go with Taarabt (or maybe even Moses) but good luck, I hope it works out for you

      Hi Jason,

      My thoughts:
      - With Cole and Kompany starting every game, you'll be rotating the other 3 for your 3rd defender spot. For that reason I don't see why you have two 5m defenders. One is enough. Downgrade Hughes or Bardsley.
      - As you will be rotating Taarabt and Dyer I assume, it means you will be playing Moses and Holt every gameweek! Ask yourself if you are really comfortable with that?

Just considerations to mull over. All teams look a little lightweight preseason, it's the nature of this game. A few weeks into the season all of the bargains will emerge...

I can see City letting in a right few goals. I would rather rotate a 5.5.

I think he will start as he is that type of person who wants to play and an opening win is very important. He will then he will be subbed for the next two games in.

Tara-butt hasnt done very well in pre-season has he guys.....

Considering people are on the pre-season bandwagon sissyon, johnson etc(remember boselli, and petrov) - so it seems odd hey are going for him given he wants away also?

I know what the response will be, just saying !

Not much Everton love around here is there.

I guess they desperately need a proper striker. Feel sorry for Moyes, working on a shoestring

    SAF:

    - Carrick ruled out of Sunday with a knock. Rafael isn't expected to play either.

-Valencia & Fletcher are in full training.

-Javier Hernandez is "still two to three weeks away" and "should be back at the end of August"

Ferdinand will play the majority of games too (if fit of course!)

In defence/goalkeeper it's only really the RB spot which is subject to rotation.

    Given Ruddy
    Cole Kompany Senderos Bramble Simpson
    Malouda Silva Downing O'Hara Moses
    Drogba Gervinho AJ

    Is my strikeforce too 'punty'?
Will shift either Downing or Silva > N'Zogs and Gervinho > Suarez as soon as they are fit.

Yes...Drogba will not start every match, but should start against stoke.

AJ is having a great pre season, but I still have nagging doubts based on previous FPL scores.

      Gervinho is indeed a punt

I'd prefer to see one of RVP - Rooney - Carrol (suarez if fit) or Bent in there. All proven, all capable of 20 plus goals over the season...all can score home and away. All are also more nailed on than Robert Powell during his audition for Jesus Christ Superstar in 1971.

How about Gorkss from QPR? 4.5, can score and has good opening fixtures. You could do with a better big hitter than Kompany.
