Nani looks a nailed-on starter for next week, says Sir Alex Ferguson. Liverpool are hopeful on Glen Johnson’s fitness. Darren Bent uses twitter to explain his shoulder injury while Man City coach David Platt questions Carlos Tevez’s participation in next Monday’s home game with Swansea. With only five days to go before the big kick-off, here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

Nani’s two-goal performance in yesterday’s Community Shield has earned him a starting place in game week 1. Buoyed by the winger‘s contribution in the 3-2 comeback win over Man City, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed after the game that the player will be part of his first XI at West Brom next Sunday:

“You have seen Nani’s form in pre-season and again here. He will start the season.”

The United boss was also full of praise for young Tom Cleverley, whose half-time introduction at the expense of Michael Carrick gave his side an extra attacking impetus from central midfield.

Liverpool are confident Glen Johnson will make the season opener at home to Sunderland. The right-back limped out of Saturday’s game with Valencia with a thigh injury and has subsequently been ruled out of this week’s England squad but Kenny Dalglish is optimistic Johnson will make it for the weekend.

Fabio Aurelio reckons he could play a big part in Liverpool’s season. Despite the club being linked with Jose Enrique throughout the summer, the Brazilian says he’s ready to step up and nail down the left-back role:

My problem has been the injuries and I’m aware of that but I still believe I can be better than in the past and more available. This season we have our games mostly once a week so it could be a good season for me to have a run of games and fill that gap.

Man City coach David Platt has admitted it’s unlikely that Carlos Tevez will be taking part in the club’s home game with Swansea next Monday. While the striker’s future at the Etihad Stadium remains uncertain, Platt said of the Argentine:

“Just finished the Copa America and had three weeks off, which the players need. There’s only eight-nine days before that game [against Swansea], I think it’ll be tight. But Carlos is a strange one, in the sense he doesn’t need a lot of time to get back fit – so we’ll see. Once he’s back in the building, we’ll look at things then.”

Alex McLeish is confident James Collins will be fit for the start of the season. The centre-half injured his back in training last week and has been withdrawn from the Wales squad for the game against Australia on Wednesday. Collins has been one of Aston Villa’s stand-out players this pre-season and Big Eck said :

James has injured his back. He did it a few days ago to be fair and he thought he was okay in training on Friday. But I think the intensity of training over the last few days just flared it up and he was a bit stiff. Therefore, we didn’t want to risk him. It’s a worry – but knowing the type of character James is, I’m sure he’ll be determined to be on that pitch at Craven Cottage.

Darren Bent will miss England’s midweek match with a shoulder injury. The Villa forward used the medium of twitter to announce his injury but his withdrawal seems merely precautionary and he expects to be fit for the weekend game at Fulham. Bent tweeted :

Gutted I had to pull out of the England squad. The shoulder has been bothering me and wanna make sure I’m fully fit for the big KO next week.

Roy Hodgson is hopeful Peter Odemwingie will recover from an ankle knock to face Man United at the Hawthorns on Sunday. Last season’s top-scorer picked up the injury in a recent friendly with Bristol City and has yet to feature since for West Brom. Speaking ahead of yesterday’s game with Parma, Hodgson said of the injury:

We were hoping it would recover in time for today’s game but it didn’t. Now we’re hoping it won’t go beyond next week. Ankle injuries can take time and I wouldn’t want to put a timescale on it. All I want to say is the medical staff are very optimistic he’ll recover, so I’ve got to be optimistic. I’m sure he’ll be desperate to play against United and we’ll be happy to put him in the team if he’s fit.

Roberto Martinez may be without the talents of James McCarthy for the season opener at home to Norwich. The midfielder picked up an ankle injury in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Villarreal and Wigan are sweating on his availability. Good news for Martinez was the continued good form of Victor Moses- the winger scored the only goal, to net for the third game running.

Steve Bruce looks set to add another player to the Sunderland ranks this summer. The Black Cats boss has already snapped up nine players during the close season but intends to make that ten with the capture of winger James McClean from Derry City in a deal in the region of £1m.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

For my money Ashley Young looked a more promising prospect that Nani, despite Nani's two goals. With Tony V still out I think he'd be a better bet for the first game.

    RMT please

    Given/Ruddy
    Cole/Kompany/Hughes/Bramble/S Taylor
    Young/Downing/Taarabt/O’Hara/Moses
    Carroll/Bent/Holt

Leaves £2m in the bank to switch Carroll to Torres or Drogba in GW 2 and then to RVP from GW 4.

Will get Man City attacking coverage for GW4 once their side has settled down a bit, probably either Silva for Young or Yaya/Johnson for Downing.

Longer term plans, if you can make any, are Baines for Cole around GW12, O’Hara to Sessegnon around GW12, Walters/Etherington for Taarabt around GW10, Spurs coverage from GW10 and more United coverage from GW11.

Obviously it’s impossible to have a definitive plan from the off as who knows what will happen with form/injuries, but it’s nice to have an outline in place and will hopefully cut down on 4pt hits.

I used to work in Community safety, if the police have had to do night after night of extra shifts it is unlikely the games would be played within the same GW. Football is seen as an extra and non-essential.

Just jumped on the Nani bandwagon by taking out Malouda and also doubled up on City with Lescott in place of Hangeland.I know doubling up is a gamble but it’s a gamble I’m willing to take.Besides,Lescott will not just give you cleanies but also Hangeland’s goals, and for the same price!
I’m also thinking of getting Ivanovic in somehow.Maybe Kompany->Ivanovic,Sinclair->5.5 MID?Thoughts?Cheers.

If people have RVP and he won't make it for the first week, who are people getting for him? I'm looking at the options but it's a little tough getting someone:

Rooney - On form, but only two games where they will have a great chance at winning and both are away

Torres - Semi-decent fixtures, but will probably make you cry

Drogba - Same as Torres, but isn't 100% guaranteed to start and can't work with Torres

Tevez - Doesn't really care about City and isn't guaranteed a start. Decent fixtures though.

Aguero - 11.0 for a first year player is a bit rich, even if it's Aguero.

Thoughts? I'm probably leaning towards Rooney or Drogba myself.

Aguero and Tevez are unlikely to start so I'd give them a wide berth.
Drogs might be worth the punt, don't think Torres is worth it GW1 maybe GW2 if we have a better idea.
Out of that lot I'd go for Rooney or perhaps get Bent/Carrol and upgrade a MFer?

Ok, so I mailed Mr Redknapp. I could be a hot summer signing yet!

Hello Mr Redknapp, I was wondering if you'd be prepared to sign me for £1?

I'm not actually any good, and I doubt I'd make it into most 5-a-sides, but I think it would be pretty neat to legitimately claim to be a premier league footballer. If I need a kit or something, I won't expect you to pay for that, and I could even cover administration costs. And in a best case scenario, you could always sell me on at a profit (English players seem to be going at quite the premium these days).

Obviously I don't think it would be practical to turn up to training or anything like that, as I live in Bristol, but I guess you could specify in the contract that I'm not supposed to play (although in the interest of team spirit, I'd be prepared to help out if neccessary).

Thanks for your time, let me know your thoughts.

And I'll add this interesting factoid: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2006/nov/22/theknowledge.sport

Start with Nani while price is high.
          Sell before rotation starts.
          Watch his value go down.

It'd be a whole different ball game if the ranks were based on team value.. Not to say that increasing team value is a bad thing... Suppose that's the risk/benefit you gotta weigh out.

Well no you'd need his price to go up between starting with him and rotation begins. So you'd need him to score well against WBA.
No profit if he does rubbish and people jump straight off that wagon.

If you look at last seasons results for Nani the majority of his points came at home and didn't do very well away from home.

Sinclair buddy. He's most of the time the farthest player forward for Swansea and looking at this form in the Championship is a very nice footed attacker. Taaraabt is more of a playmaker. Go Sinclair IMHO.

          Al Habsi. (Moreira)
Kompany. Hughes. Orr. (Taylor. De Laet)
          Malouda. Nani. Silva. Moses. (Sinclair)
          Rooney. Bent. Holt.

What'dyu guys think? Im going with 3 4.0s at the back to rotate with.

                Leave Malouda imo
Take your pick from Nani and Silva to say downing? or dempsey (doesnt get alot of love on here) or even nzog (i know u have bent aswell so maybe not)

If you can save 1... get in bardsley, if you can save 2 i'd get samba.

3 x 4 def is a risky play, especially from 3 promoted teams. Perhaps look at downgrading Hughes to a 4.5 mil and upgrading one of your 4.0's to another 4.5 defender. If you picked say Givet and Alcaraz for example you know they will play every week and Blackburn are reasonable at home ans Wigan has a great start fixture wise.

Also, why pay 6 mil for Sinclair and not play him week 1 given your def strategy. Would it not be prudent to perhaps downgrade him and upgrade the defenders? This way you could keep Hughes. Or lose Moses for a 4.5 mid, keep Hughes and upgrade one 4.0 def to a 4.5. Just some food for thought.

I really like your attacking players, although I just changed Holt for DJ myself.

Personally, I would steer clear of Wigan defenders, they will concede every other week, most likely every week... Yes, Including the first 3 rounds.

Ivan's got a knock and rotation risk. Chelsea defence is a minefield in that sense. Another defender maybe. and Malouda. Suicide not to have him for the first few Gws.

Baines. Too expensive. You'd be overloading your defence honestly. Spread that extra quid around on your midfield.

But then again Baines is virtually as they call him a Midfielder who gets cleanies. Supplies a monster number of crosses. Will earn up BPs as per EAs PPI.
