Nani looks a nailed-on starter for next week, says Sir Alex Ferguson. Liverpool are hopeful on Glen Johnson’s fitness. Darren Bent uses twitter to explain his shoulder injury while Man City coach David Platt questions Carlos Tevez’s participation in next Monday’s home game with Swansea. With only five days to go before the big kick-off, here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

Nani’s two-goal performance in yesterday’s Community Shield has earned him a starting place in game week 1. Buoyed by the winger‘s contribution in the 3-2 comeback win over Man City, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed after the game that the player will be part of his first XI at West Brom next Sunday:

“You have seen Nani’s form in pre-season and again here. He will start the season.”

The United boss was also full of praise for young Tom Cleverley, whose half-time introduction at the expense of Michael Carrick gave his side an extra attacking impetus from central midfield.

Liverpool are confident Glen Johnson will make the season opener at home to Sunderland. The right-back limped out of Saturday’s game with Valencia with a thigh injury and has subsequently been ruled out of this week’s England squad but Kenny Dalglish is optimistic Johnson will make it for the weekend.

Fabio Aurelio reckons he could play a big part in Liverpool’s season. Despite the club being linked with Jose Enrique throughout the summer, the Brazilian says he’s ready to step up and nail down the left-back role:

My problem has been the injuries and I’m aware of that but I still believe I can be better than in the past and more available. This season we have our games mostly once a week so it could be a good season for me to have a run of games and fill that gap.

Man City coach David Platt has admitted it’s unlikely that Carlos Tevez will be taking part in the club’s home game with Swansea next Monday. While the striker’s future at the Etihad Stadium remains uncertain, Platt said of the Argentine:

“Just finished the Copa America and had three weeks off, which the players need. There’s only eight-nine days before that game [against Swansea], I think it’ll be tight. But Carlos is a strange one, in the sense he doesn’t need a lot of time to get back fit – so we’ll see. Once he’s back in the building, we’ll look at things then.”

Alex McLeish is confident James Collins will be fit for the start of the season. The centre-half injured his back in training last week and has been withdrawn from the Wales squad for the game against Australia on Wednesday. Collins has been one of Aston Villa’s stand-out players this pre-season and Big Eck said :

James has injured his back. He did it a few days ago to be fair and he thought he was okay in training on Friday. But I think the intensity of training over the last few days just flared it up and he was a bit stiff. Therefore, we didn’t want to risk him. It’s a worry – but knowing the type of character James is, I’m sure he’ll be determined to be on that pitch at Craven Cottage.

Darren Bent will miss England’s midweek match with a shoulder injury. The Villa forward used the medium of twitter to announce his injury but his withdrawal seems merely precautionary and he expects to be fit for the weekend game at Fulham. Bent tweeted :

Gutted I had to pull out of the England squad. The shoulder has been bothering me and wanna make sure I’m fully fit for the big KO next week.

Roy Hodgson is hopeful Peter Odemwingie will recover from an ankle knock to face Man United at the Hawthorns on Sunday. Last season’s top-scorer picked up the injury in a recent friendly with Bristol City and has yet to feature since for West Brom. Speaking ahead of yesterday’s game with Parma, Hodgson said of the injury:

We were hoping it would recover in time for today’s game but it didn’t. Now we’re hoping it won’t go beyond next week. Ankle injuries can take time and I wouldn’t want to put a timescale on it. All I want to say is the medical staff are very optimistic he’ll recover, so I’ve got to be optimistic. I’m sure he’ll be desperate to play against United and we’ll be happy to put him in the team if he’s fit.

Roberto Martinez may be without the talents of James McCarthy for the season opener at home to Norwich. The midfielder picked up an ankle injury in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Villarreal and Wigan are sweating on his availability. Good news for Martinez was the continued good form of Victor Moses- the winger scored the only goal, to net for the third game running.

Steve Bruce looks set to add another player to the Sunderland ranks this summer. The Black Cats boss has already snapped up nine players during the close season but intends to make that ten with the capture of winger James McClean from Derry City in a deal in the region of £1m.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I have been considering Rodallega for the first 3 GW's, but I'm hearing a bit of chatter about how he hasn't played any preseason games(Cope America) and may not even play in GW 1. Anyone have any insight into this?

Hey man i like your team, back 4/5 looks solid going from last season and pre-season, I'm not sure about Al-Habs but he will definately play all the times, who's your other keeps??
Apart from that i like it, think dyer could be a good outside shout if he rediscovers form at new club. Carroll could be hero/zero but looks to play. Who's captain?

2 issues w Rodallega - he should be fine from Copa America but is still being rested (along with Alcaraz) for some of the pre-season matches.

More importantly though - Whelan is still shopping him around for the right offer and there has been a lot of transfer speculation around him leaving this summer.

Hey Managers, Wondering why all the hype with the Given and Kenny/Ruddy combo at the back... Here's my first stab at an out there team combo:

    Hart/Mignolet
    Hangeland/Huth/Bardsley/Kompany (Briggs)
    Nani/Taarabt/Henderson/Ramsey (Reo-Coker)
    Bent/Roonbags/Gueye

It's just that they're cheap and they rotate well. Also Given is top quality, and Villa will play a more defensive 4-2-3-1 this season. I have Given/Ruddy myself.

well I have all of them...I had Malouda in my squad but took him out for Nani - at least for week 1 as Chelsea have a more difficult fixture at Stoke. Suarez isnt 100% for next week so if you keep Suarez in your squad make sure you have cover for next week.

okay, it's only my second RMT (first one since the start of august) so bear with me.

    Given, Ruddy
    Nelson, Simpson, Lescott, Kompany, Luiz
    Moses, Sess, Malouda, Downing, Sinclair
    Gervinho, Aguero, Rodallega

    0m in bank.

I planned to stick with it, but after seeing City concede so many goals I'm scared on doubling up on their defence, albeit they're playing Swansea at home.

Also I'm wondering if Luiz, Nelson and Aguero will start.

It only works for the Members ticker now.

Use the plus and minus button on the top right of the ticker to expand or contract the range of matches you are interested in.

Use the button at the bottom to toggle between overall difficulty / attacking potential / clean sheets, depending on which you are interested in.

Then hit the 'sort by difficulty' button bottom left, which sorts for the range of matches shown.

Benayoun could start the first few games with Sturridge out. Chelsea look set on playing the 4-3-3 (or sometimes a 4-3-2-1). if the 4-3-3 the midfield is Ramires-Lamps and Mikel or Ramires-Lamps and Young Josh. Upfront Benayoun is competing for a wing spot with Anelka and Kalou. In that context he could easily get the nod particularly since he and Torres have chemistry together. that works well in the 4-3-2-1 with Drogs upfront and Torres and Benayoun playing behind him. If Chelsea are intent on selling Kalou and Anelka (hopefully now with Lukaku and Sturridge) they may want to showcase both a bit. Short answer is IDK but Benny has played well and fits well in the system so he will certainly be getting on the pitch quite a bit. I suspect we will see plenty of 1 pointers from Benny and you will have to gamble on when the goals and assists will come. They will but possibly not consistently enough to be a reliable fantasy player each week.

I recommend taking a wait and see approach with Benny - he is cheap enough that you could get him into your squad for .5 more than lots of other players in that category so I wouldnt stress about it too much. Definitely an early differential player but I think quite a gamble to bank on for week 1. And if he doesnt start/play you might be scrambling to transfer out after the first week and chasing a player whose value is going up after a hot start.

Think a lot of rubbish is talked about not overloading on the defence. For me strikers are often the worst value. E.G only two strikers offered a points per million of over 20 (at current prices)last year. K.Davies and Odemwingie. Whereas there are 10 mids, 13def and eleven gks that offer a return of 20+.
Far better off forking out the extra 1 or .5 mills. to secure the high scoring defenders. Baines or Cashley being the classic examples.
Reckon you're better off taking the risk on a couple of cheaper strikers. who if they work out will increase in value dramatically and quickly.

I think using average over the year is rubbish. Its about picking the right player at the right time. For example RVP was getting over 20 points per million towards the end of last season if you were to extend his form out for a year.

Having said that i do agree there are people on here spending far too little on defence.

Captaincy. And it's not about points per million. It's about getting the form strikers in at the right time. 13 points from a brace is worth more than 2 clean sheets. Keep that in mind in addition to captaincy.

I don't think people really think that it's just the more likely outcomes. The reason no-one really likes captaining defenders is because 1 goal and you pretty much lose any decent chance of a big points haul.

that being said, I can see some people going Baines (C) GW2

Agree. Captaincy in undoubtably the key. However I just feel that early on it could be worth going one big gun (rooney) and then two lesser names DJ and Holt? This leaves a lot of room to invest elsewhere. I've never really thought defenders make good captian choices due to fact there is a much lower ceiling on scroing potential than a striker or midfielder. So many doubts about the big top priced players. Tevez, Drogs, Torres, Fat Frank et al. Might as well benefit from potential price increases of the lesser stikers early in the season and when things become more settled with Chelski, Man U , Man C Lineups then can always play your wild card early if you're way off the mark .

        Just a thought.

OK, but last year RVP, Carroll, Rooney, Drogba, Berbatov all missed plenty of games for various reasons. It's pretty rare that the top forward in FPL gets fewer than 200 points.

Also, as a tactic it easier to implement a solid defence than gamble on the form of an individual striker were luck is a major contributor. A defence is a unit that can be judged more easily over a period of weeks (fixtures/form) etc. If on form the defence is also likley to remin constant. Unlike Citty Strikers for example.
You can then rotate your big gun players on your judgement of there relvative from or fixtures. Whereas you take the longer term view on your defence over the season.
I was not saying Defence at the expence of everything else. Just a bit more cash spent on your defnce than seems to be the trend amongst others.

    malouda, nzog, barton, sess, moses

i could swap bardsley for cahill, but then would my defence be a bit too costly?

feels like im missing out on the sinclair bandwagon as well!

Any chance can quickly RMT please guys

    Given/Ruddy
    Enrique/Kompany/O'Shea/Hughes/Gabbidon
    Moses/Modric/Sessegnon/Downing/Nani
    Bent/RVP/Graham

    Bank = 1 mil

    Uncertainties:

    RVP?
    Midfield too lightweight?
No Chelsea cover? (where would it fit?)

    Thanks in advance!

i quite like your midfield actually, to get a consistent chelsea player would mean you'd have to switch it all around though which is a shame. maybe use the 1 mil on defence?

    Nani malouda bale moses taraabt

    Carrol rodellega (zamora)

    1) Is my defence good enough, does assou ekotto need 2 come in?
    2) Should I start both moses and taraabt or should I drop 1 and play zamora
    3) Is my lack of big hitters up front concerning?

      I'll answer #4...
I'd say Nani for GW1, but I think your biggest problem is you don't have anyone who you can consistently rely on to be starting and getting points, like Rooney, RVP, Silva, etc. Malouda looks like a good choice for VC.

Wigan overload. There's no need for Figueroa, Rodellga and Moses, you're basically asking for trouble. If you've got Zamora you need to play him for sure. I wouldn't even bother with Ekotto and Cahill. Given will produce save points most of the season so don't bench him, get Ruddy in at 4.0 and play Given.

Honestly, i dont like that team.

firstly, Bale is not worth it. 8.0 for someone who averaged 3.9 points a game is madness.

Second, although Assou-Ekotto is cheap, spurs are not a good defence team, and have poor fixtures.

Also, Doubling up on Wigan players isnt wise, they arent an attacking team, and frankly Rodellega is poor.

      And to answer your questions:
      1) No your defence isnt strong enough imo, only frequent CS earner will be Kompany
      2) Drop Rodellega and play Zamora
      3) It is, a guarenteed pointss earner week in week out such as VDV is essentiall
      4) If you're going captain anyone, captain nani

Right, comments on this team please. I'll probably end up changing it, but right now this is the best I can do.

    Given Al-Habsi
    Kompany, Hangeland, Simpson, Orr, Briggs
    Nani, Silva, N'Zogbia, Taarabt, Moses
    Rooney, Bent, Campbell.

I know the defence is weak, but I'm trying to get a decent array of captain choices and last year I spent money on defence and it really wasn't worth it. If anyone has any better budget options, let me know.
