Nani looks a nailed-on starter for next week, says Sir Alex Ferguson. Liverpool are hopeful on Glen Johnson’s fitness. Darren Bent uses twitter to explain his shoulder injury while Man City coach David Platt questions Carlos Tevez’s participation in next Monday’s home game with Swansea. With only five days to go before the big kick-off, here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

Nani’s two-goal performance in yesterday’s Community Shield has earned him a starting place in game week 1. Buoyed by the winger‘s contribution in the 3-2 comeback win over Man City, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed after the game that the player will be part of his first XI at West Brom next Sunday:

“You have seen Nani’s form in pre-season and again here. He will start the season.”

The United boss was also full of praise for young Tom Cleverley, whose half-time introduction at the expense of Michael Carrick gave his side an extra attacking impetus from central midfield.

Liverpool are confident Glen Johnson will make the season opener at home to Sunderland. The right-back limped out of Saturday’s game with Valencia with a thigh injury and has subsequently been ruled out of this week’s England squad but Kenny Dalglish is optimistic Johnson will make it for the weekend.

Fabio Aurelio reckons he could play a big part in Liverpool’s season. Despite the club being linked with Jose Enrique throughout the summer, the Brazilian says he’s ready to step up and nail down the left-back role:

My problem has been the injuries and I’m aware of that but I still believe I can be better than in the past and more available. This season we have our games mostly once a week so it could be a good season for me to have a run of games and fill that gap.

Man City coach David Platt has admitted it’s unlikely that Carlos Tevez will be taking part in the club’s home game with Swansea next Monday. While the striker’s future at the Etihad Stadium remains uncertain, Platt said of the Argentine:

“Just finished the Copa America and had three weeks off, which the players need. There’s only eight-nine days before that game [against Swansea], I think it’ll be tight. But Carlos is a strange one, in the sense he doesn’t need a lot of time to get back fit – so we’ll see. Once he’s back in the building, we’ll look at things then.”

Alex McLeish is confident James Collins will be fit for the start of the season. The centre-half injured his back in training last week and has been withdrawn from the Wales squad for the game against Australia on Wednesday. Collins has been one of Aston Villa’s stand-out players this pre-season and Big Eck said :

James has injured his back. He did it a few days ago to be fair and he thought he was okay in training on Friday. But I think the intensity of training over the last few days just flared it up and he was a bit stiff. Therefore, we didn’t want to risk him. It’s a worry – but knowing the type of character James is, I’m sure he’ll be determined to be on that pitch at Craven Cottage.

Darren Bent will miss England’s midweek match with a shoulder injury. The Villa forward used the medium of twitter to announce his injury but his withdrawal seems merely precautionary and he expects to be fit for the weekend game at Fulham. Bent tweeted :

Gutted I had to pull out of the England squad. The shoulder has been bothering me and wanna make sure I’m fully fit for the big KO next week.

Roy Hodgson is hopeful Peter Odemwingie will recover from an ankle knock to face Man United at the Hawthorns on Sunday. Last season’s top-scorer picked up the injury in a recent friendly with Bristol City and has yet to feature since for West Brom. Speaking ahead of yesterday’s game with Parma, Hodgson said of the injury:

We were hoping it would recover in time for today’s game but it didn’t. Now we’re hoping it won’t go beyond next week. Ankle injuries can take time and I wouldn’t want to put a timescale on it. All I want to say is the medical staff are very optimistic he’ll recover, so I’ve got to be optimistic. I’m sure he’ll be desperate to play against United and we’ll be happy to put him in the team if he’s fit.

Roberto Martinez may be without the talents of James McCarthy for the season opener at home to Norwich. The midfielder picked up an ankle injury in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Villarreal and Wigan are sweating on his availability. Good news for Martinez was the continued good form of Victor Moses- the winger scored the only goal, to net for the third game running.

Steve Bruce looks set to add another player to the Sunderland ranks this summer. The Black Cats boss has already snapped up nine players during the close season but intends to make that ten with the capture of winger James McClean from Derry City in a deal in the region of £1m.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Eugh. Tidy this post up, one question at a time.

Rafael, Clichy and Luiz extremely dodgy selections in defence.

Cashley and Yaya is better than Luiz and Silva imo.

Holt and Moses should both play GW1. If you aren't gonna play them both in those type of games you shouldn't have them both.

    RMT Please!!

    Kenny
    Cole Kompany Hughes Gabbidon
    Nzogbia Nani Silva Moses
    Carroll(C) Bent

    subs Given Bramble Graham Ferguson

goalkeepers and defence rotate perfectly well from GWs 1-10
2.5 in the bank for Silva to Lampard GW2, no transfers GW3, Silva back in for Wigan GW4 along with Van Persie for Bent. Will try to get Lamps back in for GW6. I have Bent and Carroll up front because they are proven goalscorers. subs are p1ss poor but I’ll deal with that when I use my wildcard.
Usually don’t plan transfers ahead but I think its important to have your captain for each gameweek in your team in advance.

    All advice/criticism welcome

Taraabt is not essential.. no one is at the moment

Actually there are 3x Villa players there and they will all score good points

As you mentioned Fanta GW4 is best for RVP he might score before then but no major points lost. keep your team as it is until friday!

    Chelsea Right Backs:

Pre-season, Ivanovich has only played in the centre, with the RB slot rotated between Bosingwa and Ferreira. On the basis that Ferreira is a bit pants, can we start looking at Bosingwa as a nearly certain starter?

Swapping down A Cole to him frees up 2.0 for me to switch Orr to Agger (or similar), who I can then swap to an Arsenal defender for their lovely run of fixtures from GW4. Simpson and Bramble then give me cover on the bench. Am I mad, or is this not a rather good idea?

Lescott, Agger (to ARS GW4), Bosingwa, Brown, Simpson

Don't forget that Alex and Luiz were both given time off after the Copa America, so Terry and Ivanovic were the only available senior CBs during pre-season.

Bosingwa would be a punt, not a nearly certain starter imo, especially against a physical, tall team like Stoke.

Was thinking the same about bosingwa . Even if not a regular starter for the whole season , atleast for the first three game weeks i guess bosingwa is nailed on . luiz is not yet having full training and ivanovich too had a thigh injury in one of their recent friendly . So pretty sure bosingwa is spot on at RB . ivanovic will partner terry and once luiz is fit it myt be between ivanovic\bosingwa to sit out based on their performance in the first few game weeks .

against stoke ivan, alex, terry and cole seems very likely imo. ivanovic played on untill half time with his injury so i don't it's serious enough to rule him out of the start of the season.
however that's stoke away, after that everything is up in the air again. you could argue bosingwa is ideal for the two home games coming up after that

      Bosingwa Ivanovic Terry Cole .
Atleast for the first gameweek . It could all change once Luiz resumes full training and back to match fitness .
AVB having seen Luiz @ Benfica would obviously favour him to partner terry later on . And bosingwa being a natural RB and more attack minded ( also portuguese )would make the RB position his IMO .

a week of training for scarface. ramires manged 70mins after 3 days of training and tevez is similarly duracel bunny-esque. mancini's quote about aguero was getting him fit will be very quick as he doesn't need a pre-season like the other players, it's getting him in form could take a while as the copa players haven't played matches for a couple of weeks whilst the non-copa players have had a couple a week lately

Looking at it from the other side though I think Mancini has gotten plenty of good performances out of him when they needed him badly.

As they really don't now, he should tell him to do one.

Really tempted by 3 big guns up front and a budget midefield. Is anyone else taking up this strategy?

My reasoning is there seems to be a lot of rotation risk around the top midfielders and I like to play 3-4-3. players like Holt might be good value but I wouldn't want to play them every week.

If I take a punt on Benayoun in midfield, that then means I can transfer one striker after GW1 for Torres / Drogba and have plenty of Chelsea coverage.

Not 100% set on my front 3 yet but I plan to spend 30 - 32m and 32 - 34m on my midfield.

I guess the main risk is difficulty getting in a big gun midfielder if they explode, but I guess there's a risk in any strategy.

I also think with the new BP system that goals will be rewarded the most.

    Thoughts?

I just asked the same question. No doubt Terry and Cashley will start. I'm thinking Ivanovic will start at right back ahead of Bosingwa. Then its a straight battle between alex and luiz to partner Terry.

You've gone big on your defence and strikers, but with little back up behind that. Dangerous having both Orr and Briggs, would suggest downgrading from Baines to say Jakielka to upgrade one of those two and possibly a better backup keeper.

        Thanks for the feedback.

I have a spare 1.5 in the bank

May downgrade drogba dependent on the start to his season to get in a star man as black cat said.

I'm feeling bullish about keeping Given as No.1 all season but I'm a newbie so I can see this backfiring.

Chelseas back four? God knows, Terry and Cole are the only firm starts I'd imagine. stating the obvious#
