Nani looks a nailed-on starter for next week, says Sir Alex Ferguson. Liverpool are hopeful on Glen Johnson’s fitness. Darren Bent uses twitter to explain his shoulder injury while Man City coach David Platt questions Carlos Tevez’s participation in next Monday’s home game with Swansea. With only five days to go before the big kick-off, here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

Nani’s two-goal performance in yesterday’s Community Shield has earned him a starting place in game week 1. Buoyed by the winger‘s contribution in the 3-2 comeback win over Man City, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed after the game that the player will be part of his first XI at West Brom next Sunday:

“You have seen Nani’s form in pre-season and again here. He will start the season.”

The United boss was also full of praise for young Tom Cleverley, whose half-time introduction at the expense of Michael Carrick gave his side an extra attacking impetus from central midfield.

Liverpool are confident Glen Johnson will make the season opener at home to Sunderland. The right-back limped out of Saturday’s game with Valencia with a thigh injury and has subsequently been ruled out of this week’s England squad but Kenny Dalglish is optimistic Johnson will make it for the weekend.

Fabio Aurelio reckons he could play a big part in Liverpool’s season. Despite the club being linked with Jose Enrique throughout the summer, the Brazilian says he’s ready to step up and nail down the left-back role:

My problem has been the injuries and I’m aware of that but I still believe I can be better than in the past and more available. This season we have our games mostly once a week so it could be a good season for me to have a run of games and fill that gap.

Man City coach David Platt has admitted it’s unlikely that Carlos Tevez will be taking part in the club’s home game with Swansea next Monday. While the striker’s future at the Etihad Stadium remains uncertain, Platt said of the Argentine:

“Just finished the Copa America and had three weeks off, which the players need. There’s only eight-nine days before that game [against Swansea], I think it’ll be tight. But Carlos is a strange one, in the sense he doesn’t need a lot of time to get back fit – so we’ll see. Once he’s back in the building, we’ll look at things then.”

Alex McLeish is confident James Collins will be fit for the start of the season. The centre-half injured his back in training last week and has been withdrawn from the Wales squad for the game against Australia on Wednesday. Collins has been one of Aston Villa’s stand-out players this pre-season and Big Eck said :

James has injured his back. He did it a few days ago to be fair and he thought he was okay in training on Friday. But I think the intensity of training over the last few days just flared it up and he was a bit stiff. Therefore, we didn’t want to risk him. It’s a worry – but knowing the type of character James is, I’m sure he’ll be determined to be on that pitch at Craven Cottage.

Darren Bent will miss England’s midweek match with a shoulder injury. The Villa forward used the medium of twitter to announce his injury but his withdrawal seems merely precautionary and he expects to be fit for the weekend game at Fulham. Bent tweeted :

Gutted I had to pull out of the England squad. The shoulder has been bothering me and wanna make sure I’m fully fit for the big KO next week.

Roy Hodgson is hopeful Peter Odemwingie will recover from an ankle knock to face Man United at the Hawthorns on Sunday. Last season’s top-scorer picked up the injury in a recent friendly with Bristol City and has yet to feature since for West Brom. Speaking ahead of yesterday’s game with Parma, Hodgson said of the injury:

We were hoping it would recover in time for today’s game but it didn’t. Now we’re hoping it won’t go beyond next week. Ankle injuries can take time and I wouldn’t want to put a timescale on it. All I want to say is the medical staff are very optimistic he’ll recover, so I’ve got to be optimistic. I’m sure he’ll be desperate to play against United and we’ll be happy to put him in the team if he’s fit.

Roberto Martinez may be without the talents of James McCarthy for the season opener at home to Norwich. The midfielder picked up an ankle injury in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Villarreal and Wigan are sweating on his availability. Good news for Martinez was the continued good form of Victor Moses- the winger scored the only goal, to net for the third game running.

Steve Bruce looks set to add another player to the Sunderland ranks this summer. The Black Cats boss has already snapped up nine players during the close season but intends to make that ten with the capture of winger James McClean from Derry City in a deal in the region of £1m.

Probably already been said, but I'm glad Cleverley got called up for the England Squad. Definitely deserves it. Poor Carrick, replaced by Tom by club and country! 😛

people on twitter saying it's crazy as it's based on 45mins of proper football. that's 45mins more than most considering it's the summer.

He played in the U21 euros and he was quite good in that too, so I wouldn't really say that it's based on that single game, personally.

Ok, latest effort below - any thoughts?

    Given, Ruddy
Kompany, Cashley, Simpson, Orr, N Taylor
    Nani, Silva, N'Zogbia, Sessegon, Moses
    Drogba, Carroll, DJ
Bank 1.0m to leave enough for either (most likely a)
    a) Silva -> Malouda in GW2
    b) Drogba or Carroll -> Torres if he looks like playing

Don't like having plans to sub after 1 GW.

Pick a team you'd be happy with for 3 GWs then use your subs to counter any changes in fortunes (injuries, shining stars, etc)

Hmm, perhaps a valid point. Was pretty set on Malouda and Silva as my 2 top priced midfielders, but Nani looked a bit too good to ignore last night. Malouda has the best fixtures, Nani is the most explosive, Silva looks like being consistent.

I think i'll start with the above plan, and if injuries mean Silva has to stay in then I can live with that...

    My current thinking:

    Schwarzer
    Givet/Cole/Kompany
    Nani/Malouda/Silva/Moses
    Campbell/Gervinho/Zamora

    Subs: Westwood/Tchoyi/Shawcross/Bardsley

Anyone in that line up you’d consider ‘risky’ or overpriced relative to a similar option (i.e. similar player for lower price, or better player for same price). Fixture wise I’m look at around 5 games.

          Which hard fixtures?

home to Liverpool isn't that hard - will give you away to United, but that's one game in 3. Wouldn't want to miss out on Arsenal's opening day thrashing of Newcastle.

To be honest, he is my biggest concern, but I can't see where else to spend up to 10.0 up top.

Was messing around with my team to see if I could get Nani sliva and malouda in midfield...
    I came up with:

    Given (Ruddy)
Kompany Cole A Alcaraz (Warnock Woodgate)
    Nani Sliva Malouda Moses Duff
    Zamora Bent(Cox)

Obviously woodgate is the major gamble he could injure himself thinking of the warm up....

RvP is a risk for the first GW - don't really want to spend 12.0 on someone who may not start. Downgrading him could get you the 2.0 you want.

I'd say that is constructive if maybe a little forthright. For what it's worth though:

Gabbidon - QPR will concede a bucket load. He's just a makeweight for the rest of your team though? Suppose he is palatable.
Shawcross - Awful fixtures. First 3 at home are CHE, MUN and LIV. Steer clear.
Enrique - still at Newcastle and not worth it while he is. Good prospect if he moves to Liverpool though.

Simpson is pretty nailed on. If you get him though there's no need for Enrique (atm).

Whatever you do, do not consider Ferguson as bench fodder...he will never play...so you are immediately giving yourself a handicap before the season starts of only having 14 players.

When injuries etc hit you will find yourself regretting Ferguson.

Proper bench fodder is Moses - Neville- De Jong....someone who will play each week but is essentially a bit shit.

      GKs fine.
Defence needs at least one more big name, maybe Ashley Cole.
      Midfield is fine.
Don't like your forwards. You need at least one proven 15+ prem goalscorer, e.g. Rooney, Tevez, Van Persie, etc.

Hi ToonTom. Zamora is a decent choice imo. If I can just find another 0.5 I might get him instead of Ba. Speaking of Ba, you think he'll do anything good? Because I do.

Sessegnon will be in my team too at that price, I rate him as an FPL prospect and Sunderland will be OK.

So, Downing then, my thinking is that Liverpool will score goals this season and that he has less competition for his place than some others do.

Fair logic, same as mine has been. Ba has looked off the pace apparently so far (I havent been to any of the games to be fair) but should start unless we buy another forward which we may well do. I dont have him atm but team is in flux now, it is time to start making decisions, but I want to avoid RMTs, so I ma off to raid old threads for ideas/thoughts!hahah

Was just about to post the very same question. I personally think RVP and Suarez will play but my back up plan is Rooney/Gervinho & Carrol. Quite settled on the rest of my team.

arteta may be out for a few more weeks, suarez back week 1 or maybe 2 vp will be back soon as well and gibbs seems similar, but dont risk any of them for first gameweek

well like i just asked would arteta be playing gameweek one and i was told he would be out for 2 or 3 weeks and they have him starting....they also have Rvp and gibbs starting who are both doubtful.....arsenal not starting fabs too not sure on that.....ivanonvic mikel and luiz are also doubtful....and stevie g is also out for gameweek one so they wont line out like that

Arrgh, not only do they not give any reasons, but even I can tell it's bollocks.

I mean not only will the teams not line up like that the entire system, but by the time I got to Liverpool I could see they were lies.

Hey guys, had a pretty solid well balanced team then somehow it changed to a possibly worse unique team :/ anyway can u pro’s give me some help in making it better? any help is much appreciated

    Given (Kenny)

Enrique (if moves) Hughes Lescott (Simpson) (Orr)
    Silva(v) Taarabt Moses Lampard (Sinclair)
    Dzeko Rooney(c) Zamora

The main problem is i am now .5 over..

Am planning on Dzeko -> Odem for GW3
and Zamora will go when fixtures get tough

    Thanks Guys

Great team though your risk is in your forward line. If Gervinho starts, Holt makes the step up to Prem grade and Carroll isn't overshadowed by Suarez/Kuyt you could be laughing.

Hey guys, any advise on my team much appreciated.

    Given, Al Habsi
    Kompany, Hughes, Jagielka, Bardsley, Simpson
    N’Zogbia, Sinclair, Taarabt, Malouda, Moses
    Rooney, Drogba, Holt

    1.5 in the bank.
1)will bring in Van Persie for Drogba once we hear how his injury is.
2)Should i swap Ruddy for Al Habsi, i hear they rotate well?
3)And is Bramble a better option than Bardsley? What will the Sunderlands defense most likely be?
    4) not sure on jags or holt, are there better options?

maybe hold off drogba and malouda (atleast 1) til we know what chelseas lineup is gonna be
ruddy is cheaper, but i am not sure about rotation, maybe get kenny
