Nani looks a nailed-on starter for next week, says Sir Alex Ferguson. Liverpool are hopeful on Glen Johnson’s fitness. Darren Bent uses twitter to explain his shoulder injury while Man City coach David Platt questions Carlos Tevez’s participation in next Monday’s home game with Swansea. With only five days to go before the big kick-off, here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

Nani’s two-goal performance in yesterday’s Community Shield has earned him a starting place in game week 1. Buoyed by the winger‘s contribution in the 3-2 comeback win over Man City, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed after the game that the player will be part of his first XI at West Brom next Sunday:

“You have seen Nani’s form in pre-season and again here. He will start the season.”

The United boss was also full of praise for young Tom Cleverley, whose half-time introduction at the expense of Michael Carrick gave his side an extra attacking impetus from central midfield.

Liverpool are confident Glen Johnson will make the season opener at home to Sunderland. The right-back limped out of Saturday’s game with Valencia with a thigh injury and has subsequently been ruled out of this week’s England squad but Kenny Dalglish is optimistic Johnson will make it for the weekend.

Fabio Aurelio reckons he could play a big part in Liverpool’s season. Despite the club being linked with Jose Enrique throughout the summer, the Brazilian says he’s ready to step up and nail down the left-back role:

My problem has been the injuries and I’m aware of that but I still believe I can be better than in the past and more available. This season we have our games mostly once a week so it could be a good season for me to have a run of games and fill that gap.

Man City coach David Platt has admitted it’s unlikely that Carlos Tevez will be taking part in the club’s home game with Swansea next Monday. While the striker’s future at the Etihad Stadium remains uncertain, Platt said of the Argentine:

“Just finished the Copa America and had three weeks off, which the players need. There’s only eight-nine days before that game [against Swansea], I think it’ll be tight. But Carlos is a strange one, in the sense he doesn’t need a lot of time to get back fit – so we’ll see. Once he’s back in the building, we’ll look at things then.”

Alex McLeish is confident James Collins will be fit for the start of the season. The centre-half injured his back in training last week and has been withdrawn from the Wales squad for the game against Australia on Wednesday. Collins has been one of Aston Villa’s stand-out players this pre-season and Big Eck said :

James has injured his back. He did it a few days ago to be fair and he thought he was okay in training on Friday. But I think the intensity of training over the last few days just flared it up and he was a bit stiff. Therefore, we didn’t want to risk him. It’s a worry – but knowing the type of character James is, I’m sure he’ll be determined to be on that pitch at Craven Cottage.

Darren Bent will miss England’s midweek match with a shoulder injury. The Villa forward used the medium of twitter to announce his injury but his withdrawal seems merely precautionary and he expects to be fit for the weekend game at Fulham. Bent tweeted :

Gutted I had to pull out of the England squad. The shoulder has been bothering me and wanna make sure I’m fully fit for the big KO next week.

Roy Hodgson is hopeful Peter Odemwingie will recover from an ankle knock to face Man United at the Hawthorns on Sunday. Last season’s top-scorer picked up the injury in a recent friendly with Bristol City and has yet to feature since for West Brom. Speaking ahead of yesterday’s game with Parma, Hodgson said of the injury:

We were hoping it would recover in time for today’s game but it didn’t. Now we’re hoping it won’t go beyond next week. Ankle injuries can take time and I wouldn’t want to put a timescale on it. All I want to say is the medical staff are very optimistic he’ll recover, so I’ve got to be optimistic. I’m sure he’ll be desperate to play against United and we’ll be happy to put him in the team if he’s fit.

Roberto Martinez may be without the talents of James McCarthy for the season opener at home to Norwich. The midfielder picked up an ankle injury in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Villarreal and Wigan are sweating on his availability. Good news for Martinez was the continued good form of Victor Moses- the winger scored the only goal, to net for the third game running.

Steve Bruce looks set to add another player to the Sunderland ranks this summer. The Black Cats boss has already snapped up nine players during the close season but intends to make that ten with the capture of winger James McClean from Derry City in a deal in the region of £1m.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Hey guys,

my first time doing this so please give me some your thoughts on my team.......

    Given----(Begovic or Ruddy/moriera)

    Cahill--Jageilka--Hughes--Enrique--Assou-Ekkoto

    Nani--Silva--N'zogbia--Taarabet--Moses

    Carroll--Gyan--Zamora

with 0.5 or 1.5m in bank

Want to put either Wilshere or Ramsey in because with Fabregas going/not playing i think them two will be vital for Arsenal.

Ramsey has goals in him too, and what are your thoughts with Gervinho

Probably a back 5 not seen before
      Solid midfielders
plus £`s spare to do various tweeks .... when Saurez/Aguero are 100% fit .

I've opted for Gervinho as it doesn't seem likely that RVP will start IMO. However it may make sense to keep 3mil spare to get him in should he find his fitness again

I would steer clear of Cahill for the first few games as Bolton's fixtures aren't that great.

weak forward line imo. Gervinho untested / unknown quantity in the PL. Should go Bent / Suarez for Gervinho... see above also opening fixtures are cack and RVP / Fabregas / Nasri all doubtful for various reasons so think l'Arse will struggle.

        Ta,

I just can't envisage them failing that badly, but they are the Arse after all.

Gerv did look decent pre-season, but again I see your point about struggling in the Prem.

not so much that he will struggle, i agree he has looked good and as you say Arsenal are still a top side. but the uncerainty / injuries to other key players could take away a lot of high scoring potential.

Fair few people saying that they were wishing Cleverley was a nailed on starter as a good FPL prospect.

Why isn't the same being said about Wilshere? I think that he could come good in realtion to his price tag.

my favourite on the previous page was someone urging another poster to get Ferguson (who will never play ) in. ...how can anyone seriously follow that kind of advice. Might as well have me as bench fodder. "Sure, Jonty only costs 1m and will never play and can't actually play football, but he's great bench fodder."

I know..its crazy. 155,000 people have transfered in Ferguson...he won't play. That's 155,000 who have said here you go everyone else I'm going to handicap my team so you can all have a chance.

There are arguments for and against a range of players like Moses and Simpson and Orr, but with Ferguson I can't see any argument whatsoever for getting him in.

Anyone else considering dumping RVP with this potential injury? He is always out longer than Wenger says and his fixtures are not great....

he was the first name in my team though!

yep, same here. despite average fixtures i think i will put Rooney in for him. Man U scared me yday but I don't want Nani (rotation), most of their play goes thru Rooney. Takes pens / the odd free kick, high % of assists and always plays well.

I have reluctantly....RVP was the first name on my team sheet and now dumped for Rooney. If he declares himself 100 per cent fit before the newcastle game I may go back, but no time for uncertainty not when I'm more than happy to have that giant potato faced clown sitting pretty in my forward line.

First name on mine too. I think it's probably a phantom injury to stop him from playing for Holland this week (apparently he went down then carried on playing, but just didn't come back out after half time). If there's no concrete news though, Rooney will come in. Shame as I was pretty confident of him racking up a decent score against Newcastle, no offence 😉 .

Sorry, this is a real newbie question but hoping some of you experts on here can help. In terms of picking the 15 players is it better to get 15 players who are all half decent with a couple of stars, or sacrifice a couple of defenders and a midfielder for a weaker option and use that money in mire big hitters?

I'm thinking I'll go in for a 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 every week but would like to spend money on decent players like Barton, piennar, holden, etc only for them to be on the bench...

So whats the concencous... Skimp money on about 5 players and have a strong 10 or have one or two star players and twelve or thirteen decent players.

Cheers in advance for any help

I'd say 2 star players in each position, defence, midfield and upfront.

For example Cole Kompany/Malouda Nani/Rooney Bebt

Then make the rest up of good scorers/assisters from the lower teams e.g. o'hara, taarabt, duff etc.

Key to the defence should be good rotation so make sure that your cheap 4-5.5m defenders rotate well.

Then pick players like Moses or Holt as punts to make up the rest of the squad. NEVER pick someone who will never play though ala Ferguson of newcastle.

      Hope this helps

Although it is a newb question, it's eloquently put, and deserving of more responses.

The only place I feel one can "skimp" money is in the 5th defender spot, as most of us like to only field 3 at the back in a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3.

Even then, for me I need all 15 players to be playable. I strongly recommend you get 15 players who are all likely to start on a regular basis. You never know who will be rested, injured, suspended etc etc. You need players who can step in so using your terminology I would "have one or two star players and twelve or thirteen decent players".

P.S. Barton, Pienaar and Holden are not decent FPL prospects at the moment.

You should try and make sure you have every player starting, thats why people debate 4.0 million defenders so much etc. (will they start or not). Sometimes you will have to bench people who are not total bargain basement but that is OK, within reason! At the min I am planning to bench someone around 6, so thats no worries. You need a flexible squad.

Get them all starting, then look at scoring/clean sheets. etc and fixtures....

Welcome btw, it is manic here due to new season/intake, try and read what people say and work through that...many teams are the similar, but for a reason!

      Good luck

PS I am not an "expert" anyone who says that are is full of shi*!

      OK, how about:
*2 fairly cheap goalies whos fixtures fit well together
*1 or 2 top defenders who will play almost every week
*the remaining defenders should have fixtures that work together so you can play them when they have a good fixture and bench them when not
*1 cheap (4.5 or 5.0) midfielder who will start for his club and might stand a chance of getting points. Will sit on your bench almost every week but may need to play depending on injuries
*3 top range attackers from whom you choose your captain
*the remaining 4 attackers should be good midrange players who stand a decent chance of scoring points every week.

For example, my squad has generally looked like this for a while now:

      Given, Ruddy
A COle, Kompany, Wes Brown, S Taylor, Orr
      Malouda, N'zogbia, Sessegnon, Sinclair, Moses
      RVP, Carroll, Zamora

Mate... I'd say formulate your approach and go with it.

I've spent hundreds of hours (feels like it)so far, but you can bet that come gameweek 3, three or four that I was so absolutely certain about will turn out to be pants, and I'll be playing that wildcard to bring in those I overlooked.

I always go for three at the back as defenders don't get as many points as Mids and Forwards... and that could be more pronounced this season with the bonus point set up.

Anyone taking a chance with Bosingwa?

I think I am going to do it, he looked good against rangers, he is Portugese and seems to be in favour with AVB, plus he's only 5.5.

(not saying his is favourite with AVB, just that he seems to like him)

If he doesn't start I will have Orr coming in for him who is at home to Bolton. I can then swap him for whichever 5.5 defender is looking to be nailed on (Rafael, Smalling, jagielka etc).

The extra cash I get from not having cashley or ivanovic gives some really nice attacking options.

The rest of my team won't need changing for the first few weeks, barring injury, so it seems like win-win to me.

He's in my team - he got an assist, and is on corners/some free kicks. Nani's second goal was a givaway (nicely finished but still a gift) which will not happen every week.

Young had a few chances to score himself, which I think he will start converting once he settles into the team a bit more. I am doing it for a nice differential on all the bandwagon joiners and hope it pays off. If not it's a straight swap (before his price rises).
