The first major team news going into the weekend comes from the Arsenal camp with Arsene Wenger confirming that Robin Van Persie should be amongst a string of players available for Saturday’s trip to Newcastle.

The Dutchman was a slight doubt going into the weekend having suffered a knock in the first half of the friendly with Benfica. Wenger has however offered us reassurance that the striker should figure at St James’ Park…

“From the players who played in the last game, everyone should be available.â€

There’s more positive news on both Thomas Vermaelen, who was nursing a back complaint and Theo Walcott who has returned to training ahead of schedule following an ankle problem. Kieran Gibbs is also thought to be available and will likely claim the left-back berth.

With Aaron Ramsey and Andrei Arshavin both also given a clean bill of health, Arsenal’s resources look plentiful enough even without both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri who remain unlikely to figure. The Gunners will also be without both Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby in midfield.

Van Persie’s availability could now cause a shuffle within our Fantasy squads. Despite a testing opening three Gameweeks, Arsenal appear to have a run of fixtures during the first-half of the season which should hand the Dutchtman opportunity to flourish. The recent squad upheaval and the continuing doubts over Van Persie’s durability will be a concern but, even so, the Dutchman is currently owned by over 140,000 Fantasy Premier League managers – a figure which could be set to rise as the day progresses.

This early team news from the Emirates has been collated in our Team News section – keep popping back there for all the updates as today unfolds.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Righto guys, after listening to the scout cast, the chaps seem to think that Liverpool might have a clean sheet in them this weekend. It looks as though Enrique wont line up for GW1 so, any recommendations on which Liverpool defender would be a good bet? I was thinking Agger.

    Rest of defence is Kompany/ Hughes / ? / Simpson / Gabbidon

Hmmm...I don't think you can take a short term view of this game, Jamie. I would take the first 6 games as a whole and base your team around them.

Otherwise, it will be hits (now there's a word I haven't used for a while) galore.

On saying that, your defence looks good and well thought out. I think Brown at 4.5 is good value and comes from a team that kept plenty of cs in the first half of the season last year.

It's almost crunch time, 1 more day. I'd like Liverpool and Chelsea to come out with a statement confirming Suarez and Ivanovic are playing then i'd be a happy man, unfortunately that's not going to happen so so last minute tinkering is going to be called for.

ATM I have 2.0 in the bank. I've played this game for years and I usually try to use up all of my money. This year though I'm thinking about leaving myself something to play with.

    What do you think?

Apart from the fact that they both got bags of goals last season. O'Hara and DJ are good choices and perhaps more sensible choices but there's nothing wrong with a little gamble on those cheap players.

I’m not too keen on nzogbia – plus his high ownership means that if he doesn’t bring in the points, his price will fall relatively quickly as people ship him out

High ownership doesn't affect how quickly price falls since its based on %. But, high ownership does mean that his price is less likely to rise since thats based on pure numbers...

    Given – Ruddy
    ACole – Lescott – Bramble – Simpson – Orr
    Malouda – Silva – Sessegnon – O’Hara – Moses
    Bent – Carroll – Zamora

    1. Do I need to get in RVP?

Taraabt is a straight swap for O'hara. RVP is a good option as would Rooney be also - I think due to budget it's difficult to get attacking cover from all the top teams.

I had the same dilemma in my team earlier this week. In the end I settled for just Moses. According to most on here Moses will fill the n'zog gap and has been good preseason. I also read that Rodellaga is a risk to start the GW. I have Hughes in my team and think he will play.

Don't know about everyone else but i alway saw Rafael as a sure starter for Man U. Might be wrong but hes surely better than Smalling and Jones at RB. And I'm happy to keep Baines in as hes got brilliant fixtures after GW1.

FFS generic with a 'big defence as opposed to a big attack' variation.

And to elaborate.. it is thus quite a good team. The cheap forwards you've gone for are good choices but I would question Rafael and Agger.

If you mean roger, 5m for a wolves defender is never a bargain

There seems to be far more good defence options this season compared to midfield and striking options. Just hope they start scoring for me from the first whistle.

Rangel of Swansea £4.5 million. Granted they may not keep as many clean sheets now they have come up but he is a Baines type defender so may make points that way.

Rafael - Bargin for a UTD Defender that starts or good price for a defender who will start but not very often for Utd? Is Smalling a better shout?
