The Digest – a new regular. The concept is simple – capture the Gameweek past under three headings, assessing the player, the team and the one event that has the Fantasy Football community stirring.

Gameweek One provided an easy introduction, although sadly, around the genius of one Argentinian and the artistry of a sparkling Monday night display, some of its events are best forgotton.

The Player

Sergio Aguero
Late to the party, Sergio Aguero transformed the Gameweek in thirty minutes by dismantling Swansea with two goals and a smart assist for David Silva’s third goal. Busy and bustling, Aguero’s impressive industry was surpassed by moments of brilliance, capped by a 20-yard drive that dipped and curled away from the grasp of Vorm – a keeper who had, for so long, repelled City’s best efforts.

Any doubts that Aguero would take time adjusting to Premier League life were extinguished – concerns that Mancini’s men would need more matches to gel with their new talisman quelled. The link up play with Silva, in particular, looks to have the potential to dismantle defences and Aguero clearly has the end product to convert the creative spark supplied by the Spaniard.

Fantasy Managers will have revised their plans of the back of the half-hour cameo. Suddenly Aguero is no longer a “wait and see” prospect – he’s firmly in our plans with heavy investment heading his way.

The Team

Man City
City’s slow ascent from a teasing tormentor to ultimate destroyers of Swansea’s plucky Premier League baptism sent a clear message to their title rivals. The firepower available to Roberto Mancini is clearly devastating, reinforced considerably by Aguero’s explosive introduction on the hour-mark.

Around the Argentinian, last season’s campaigners stepped up accordingly. David Silva conjured and cajoled in midfield, linking play, seeking the ball, dazzling the visitors forlorn attempts to shackle his influence. Yaya Toure was immense – by pushing his presence further up the pitch, Mancini turned the game, imprisoned Swansea in their own half and was able to sustain the pressure to such a degree, breaking point was inevitable. Even Edin Dzeko, rejuvenated by a pre-season and clean slate, toiled as the lone striker before providing the focal point for Aguero to buzz around with such effect. A 75-minute appearance for Adam Johnson, the usual smattering of step-overs this time accompanied by an end product as he provided the ammunition for Dzeko’s crucial opener.

Behind all finery, Vincent Kompany marshalled a defence which started the campaign with a clean sheet – the first of many for a defence which topped the rankings last term.

We shouldn’t be seduced too easily – Swansea’s resistance seemed to drain once Dzeko breached their defence; clearly Brendan Rodgers has a lot of work to do before his outfit can compete with such an effective foe. However, it’s apparent that City’s attacking talent bristles with Fantasy potential and with defensive resolve also on offer, the temptation to boost the City quota in our lineups is strong.

The Talking Point

Fantasy Premier League Woes
Much as we’d like to dwell on some sparkling on-field displays, the Fantasy Gameweek was dominated by the problems suffered by the Fantasy Premier League game. Demand on Friday evening created issues which ultimately saw the service disrupted with managers unable to log on to tweak their lineups and new managers denied the opportunity to sign-up. Despite toiling overnight and a brief window of normality from 5am onwards, big demand again on Saturday morning again threatened the service and Friday night’s issues returned.

Live points were disabled while the service looked to recover and it wasn’t until Sunday that the FPL began to edge back to near working order.

Yesterday came the apology for the issues – the FPL have taken the step to lift the cost on transfers leading up to this weekend’s deadline and emphasised the option or mini-league admins to scrap Gameweek One’s tallies. New monthly prizes were introduced; an extra incentive for Gameweek’s 2-4 thrown into the mix. Inevitably, the solution left some feeling aggrieved and there’s still concerns that the message has yet to reach those who play the game. There’s still confusion.

In truth, the FPL manager just wants stability. We want the game to get back on its feet, to make a recovery and to reinvigorate our Fantasy seasons. We’ve got everything crossed for Gameweek Two. We hope to be talking football in next week’s digest.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Holt for sure imo, he's hugely influential for Norwich and takes the pens. I'd be surprised if he doesn't pick up at least a few good hauls this season.

United's recent popularity growth in Asia has been meteoric- Singapore would also give a good price for the shares.

Ultimately it would be in the interest of any potential investors to help the club succeed on the pitch as that's where a substantial part of the club's value is rooted.

This would worry me if I was a Manc fan, surely the pure sleaze of the Channel 4 doco highlighting Asian influence or claimed influence from people like Mr Sim (was that his name?) should have you deeply concerned about the future integrity and management of your club.

It can't exactly get much worse though can it?

Besides, it would be quite hard for anyone to "do a portsmouth" on us seeing as our underlying business model isn't based on the whims of Harry "I'm not a f*cking wheeler dealer" Redknapp.

So I get Bent, Torres and Rooney in as my front 3. I then start thinking about captains.

Torres - well, WBA did ok vs Utd although that was at home, and Torres hasn't scored in a while so maybe I'll risk him but not captain

Bent - well, where is his service going to come from? he can score braces from little and other times scores nothing

So really, I wonder why I have either in the first place.

I think I'm going to steer clear of Aguero given fixtures and Mancini saying he still wasn't fully ready. Surely though after last night he will start?!

Well, from what I gather from folk that watched both games at the weekend, Torres squandered some chances, and put a number of chances wide. Bent I know from the live match tracker had a few chances to score, at least 1 clear cut chance but didn't put it away.

We are only a week in, at this point not having competitive form to go on we need to put faith in the player, and Bent is solid against the best, Torres is a an excellent player on his day, and the confidence he was lacking appears to be permeating back into his overall play, I am captaining Torres this week.

It will be interesting to see how the baps are distributed this year. Your strategy may work as this week the bps went mostly to forwards and defenders, there were an unusual number of clean sheets though. Interesting to see if the trend continues

Q: How will having unlimited transfers until the Gameweek 2 deadline effect the game?
A: All record of transfers will be removed at the Gameweek 2 deadline (11:30 BST on Saturday 20th August 2011). You will start Gameweek 2 with no transfers or points deductions recorded. If you have already played your wildcard it will be reset.

Transfers will not effect player price changes until after the Gameweek 2 deadline

saw the gibbs injury happen. he got caught miles up the pitch sprinted back a good 70 yards and stretched to block the ball out for a corner. looked innocuos. then when on the front post he was rubbing his hamstring a bit but seemed relatively bouncy after that. it was about on 40mins he did it and after that he still went careering into a challenge (the one he got booked for). based on that my pointless guess would be it's like ivanovic's in pre-season and more a 1 week tightness issue, rather than a rio-esque tear

Guys advice on following defensive options:

Only ever play 3 at back so

    1. Richards, Bosingwa and then rotate either Simpson, De Laet or Gabbidon

    Or

    2. Bosingwa, Enrique, Woodgate, senderos, simpson

Option one gets me a city & chelsea defender but option 2 gives me better rotation options

fair point but i think Richards offers better short term attacking potential & could swap for another 6 city defender if looks like going to be an issue. I think Bosingwa more of a risk but get the feeling Boas likes him?

    Hi guys,

I think defense and attack there are a lot of easy/cheap/really good players but i just cannot decide on midfielders, they just look crap.

My first team I read a lot on FFS and I went with :

Taraabt, Sinclair, Moses, N Zog, Sessegnon

But as I expected, Sessegnon is shitty, Taraabt and Sinclair are in very bad teams and I think it will be hard for them to score points, or just against very bad teams so they depend too much on fixtures, and Moses lost value as Watson is the set pieces taker.

So, with this free wildcard I am thinking again and I cant see any good midfielder, I just think they all look shitty or too expensive.

    Can we discuss about that?

I think the shitty ones are :

    Ohara
    Hoolahan
    Sinclair
    Taarabt
    Ramsey
    Formica
    Sessegnon
    Larsson
    Moses
    Watson
    Muamba
    Mikel
    Brunt
    Cleverley

And the good ones but who are too expensive comparing to the top strikers are :

    yaya
    silva
    malouda
    nani
    young
    vdv
    cahill
    arteta

Seriously, I am in big trouble for making a good midfield, or not a shitty one and keeping a 3 top strikers attack (currently suarez, aguero, rooney of course).

I am afraid of having no chelsea attack coverage but Malouda is too expensive and do great in 1 over 3 matchs, and as they didnt score against Stoke, I feel they won't rock everything.

Please discuss with me about good potent midfielders, and tell me what you think about the likes of taraabt or sinclair, they could be next charlie adam, but the promoted teams look a lot more shitty than blackpool last year.

    Thanks

I've gone with good defender, good attackers and five 6.5 or lower midfilders. I'll rotate the midfielders on home fixtures.

that is what i was thinking about, but what do you think about taraabt sinclair and hoolalan now that we saw that it will be really hard for the promoted teams?

I'm not touching any newly promoted player until I see what they are made of.

I currently have Nzogbia, walters, ramsey, larson or sessonyon(not decided yet) and moses. I will rotate with home fixtures,

Also, everyone seems to rush on larsson, as we were rushing on Sessegnon, I don't think it is a good idea even if I saw wthe match and Sunderland looked great against one of the best team (Livpool)

I won my league last year for my first year in the game, I finished 18 000 overall. I made a lot of changes last year and had a value team of 110 2 months after the beginning by looking for cheap good midfielders, but I think this year should be different because the promoted teams can't handle premier league level.
You can't say that Nani, Silva, VDV are not the ones who rack up points I think, or I really don't understand this game and was just lucky last year.

The game is designed to make you choose a few players who are unlikely to do well. Take your pick out of the players on the shitty list and hope for the best. Pick players being on penalties if nothing else, they will get some points at least.

i think you should go for kalou in mid, might be a gamble but could offer great return and chelsea coverage...he's very underrated...as long as he plays he'll get slightly less points than malouda overall...but will free up a whole wad of wonga

Anyone else considering going without Chelsea cover?

    Currently I have;

    Given/Begovic
    Kompany/Hughes/Brown/Simpson/Hall
    Young/Silva/Obertan/Moses/N.Dyer
    Rooney/Aguero/Suarez

Obertan is kind of a placeholder until I think of somebody better...
Anyone got any suggestions or opinions as to whether going without Chelsea would be a problem?

    Cheers!

    Given (Ruddy)
Kompany Smalling Bosingwa (Enrique R Taylor)
    Lampard Cleverley Moses Dyer (Formica)
    Suarez RVP Aguero

Midfield too weak? I'm not sure the middling options of Sess, Taarabt, N'Zog etc. are worth dropping any of my 'Big 4'

    is saha nailed on starter?

    bosingwa?

and is it worth it to go for suarez regardless of his tough fixtures or better to wait....?

Didnt see your game at the weekend, what's the deal with your set pieces? Barton or Cabaye? Who's taking your pens for that matter with no Nolan anymore?

Barton took some freekicks, Cabaye at least one corner. Nolan was never first choice penalty taker, it was Ameobi. This season it will between Ameobi, Cabaye and Barton. I think Cabaye had a great penny record so it MIGHT be him.

Blackburn fail in bid to sign Raul.

Slightly disappointed as I'd love to see Raul in the Premiership, even in his twilight he is still a cracking player. Slightly relieved as the thought of Raul playing for Blackburn is just mental.

In my rush to save £0.5m from my back line I seem to have swapped Lescott out and Micah Richards in. I like his attacking potential but don't know much about his chances of starting/rotating.

    Thoughts anyone?

I think if it's a choice between Lescott and Richards, Lescott is worth the additional .5 for goal threat and for a starting berth right now. Once Zabaletta is back he will come back into the reckoning for RB. I have chosed Kompany over Lescott however because he is guaranteed starts, and I am willing to get .5 extra for a guaranteed starter with less goal threat, if all that makes little sense.

    A - Yaya - Torres
    B - Silva - Suarez

In my opinion Yaya and Silva are on level pegging, both recieving the same index score for Mondays game, despite Silva scoring - So on a good day I feel Yaya could prove stronger

As for Torres & Suarez they are both knee jerk picks based around my free transfer.

    so which is it?
