The Digest – a new regular. The concept is simple – capture the Gameweek past under three headings, assessing the player, the team and the one event that has the Fantasy Football community stirring.

Gameweek One provided an easy introduction, although sadly, around the genius of one Argentinian and the artistry of a sparkling Monday night display, some of its events are best forgotton.

The Player

Sergio Aguero
Late to the party, Sergio Aguero transformed the Gameweek in thirty minutes by dismantling Swansea with two goals and a smart assist for David Silva’s third goal. Busy and bustling, Aguero’s impressive industry was surpassed by moments of brilliance, capped by a 20-yard drive that dipped and curled away from the grasp of Vorm – a keeper who had, for so long, repelled City’s best efforts.

Any doubts that Aguero would take time adjusting to Premier League life were extinguished – concerns that Mancini’s men would need more matches to gel with their new talisman quelled. The link up play with Silva, in particular, looks to have the potential to dismantle defences and Aguero clearly has the end product to convert the creative spark supplied by the Spaniard.

Fantasy Managers will have revised their plans of the back of the half-hour cameo. Suddenly Aguero is no longer a “wait and see” prospect – he’s firmly in our plans with heavy investment heading his way.

The Team

Man City
City’s slow ascent from a teasing tormentor to ultimate destroyers of Swansea’s plucky Premier League baptism sent a clear message to their title rivals. The firepower available to Roberto Mancini is clearly devastating, reinforced considerably by Aguero’s explosive introduction on the hour-mark.

Around the Argentinian, last season’s campaigners stepped up accordingly. David Silva conjured and cajoled in midfield, linking play, seeking the ball, dazzling the visitors forlorn attempts to shackle his influence. Yaya Toure was immense – by pushing his presence further up the pitch, Mancini turned the game, imprisoned Swansea in their own half and was able to sustain the pressure to such a degree, breaking point was inevitable. Even Edin Dzeko, rejuvenated by a pre-season and clean slate, toiled as the lone striker before providing the focal point for Aguero to buzz around with such effect. A 75-minute appearance for Adam Johnson, the usual smattering of step-overs this time accompanied by an end product as he provided the ammunition for Dzeko’s crucial opener.

Behind all finery, Vincent Kompany marshalled a defence which started the campaign with a clean sheet – the first of many for a defence which topped the rankings last term.

We shouldn’t be seduced too easily – Swansea’s resistance seemed to drain once Dzeko breached their defence; clearly Brendan Rodgers has a lot of work to do before his outfit can compete with such an effective foe. However, it’s apparent that City’s attacking talent bristles with Fantasy potential and with defensive resolve also on offer, the temptation to boost the City quota in our lineups is strong.

The Talking Point

Fantasy Premier League Woes
Much as we’d like to dwell on some sparkling on-field displays, the Fantasy Gameweek was dominated by the problems suffered by the Fantasy Premier League game. Demand on Friday evening created issues which ultimately saw the service disrupted with managers unable to log on to tweak their lineups and new managers denied the opportunity to sign-up. Despite toiling overnight and a brief window of normality from 5am onwards, big demand again on Saturday morning again threatened the service and Friday night’s issues returned.

Live points were disabled while the service looked to recover and it wasn’t until Sunday that the FPL began to edge back to near working order.

Yesterday came the apology for the issues – the FPL have taken the step to lift the cost on transfers leading up to this weekend’s deadline and emphasised the option or mini-league admins to scrap Gameweek One’s tallies. New monthly prizes were introduced; an extra incentive for Gameweek’s 2-4 thrown into the mix. Inevitably, the solution left some feeling aggrieved and there’s still concerns that the message has yet to reach those who play the game. There’s still confusion.

In truth, the FPL manager just wants stability. We want the game to get back on its feet, to make a recovery and to reinvigorate our Fantasy seasons. We’ve got everything crossed for Gameweek Two. We hope to be talking football in next week’s digest.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

good morning/evening/whatever the hell it is for you

im thinking of putting 1.0 elsewhere by going with a combo of silva and torres rather than the original notion of malouda and aguero.

Is the malouda/ageuro combo worth the extra 1.0? Discuss

I like Silva the best of all 4 players.

      Malouda over Torres.

That leaves Aguero out, but for me, Malouda and Silva is the way forward for now. You can always find a way to get Aguero in by GW 4 if he's confirmed as starting and continuing his hot form.

Malouda is a flat track bully. He scores big against weak teams at home. AVB likes his 4-3-3 so in my opinion, he'll start, and with a much weaker defense up against him, he'll surely score well.

I can't see him being dropped just yet. Kalou and Anelka didn't exactly cover themselves in glory. A 4-4-2 still finds him on the pitch wide left.

Better value than Lampard, more nailed on than Torres, takes corners etc.

Sure he's not the best player at the club, and if this was a contest to see who the best player is, I'd avoid him like the plague. But this is fantasy football. You choose players who score points, and I can just see Malouda getting a flukey deflected cross assist and a tap-in this weekend.

There is no way that Torres would be rotated ..specially for our next game.Getting Torres back to his best is the key of our success this season..AVB is a bold manager ..he wont bother if he wanna drop someone.

Big question here....Keep Nani, who has Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea in his next 4 games... or replace him with a mid up to the value of 11m. Have City covered so no City suggestions please.

Also...what do people reckon, after playin 75mins the last day will Adam Johnson be given more of an opportunity this season?

only GW1 and im doing so bad already (39 points). Does anyone here think that Swansea actually had a good game against city? What do u think of Swansea defenders, being backed by Vorm (who was fantastic despite conceding 4 goals against city), and midfielders who can pass the ball around (swansea completed the most passes than any team in GW1)

Nice, where in New Zealand? Going to the rugby in September? I was in NZ in 2005 and I loved the place, would go back there in a heartbeat.

I moved to Boston 2 months ago and the time difference almost suits the football, Champions League games will be at 3pm (which I can get out of work for, and get all the news on line ups in work without ruining dinner) and the Premier League games are on in the morning here, so it means getting out of bed, watching a game, and then having the whole day to do stuff. Awesome!

I fancy Suarez to score the same if not better than Carroll and he is .5 cheaper, Suarez can make stuff happen from nothing, Carroll needs more support, and while he has Downing and Adam and Suarez, when they have off days, odds are Carroll will too. Not to say he is a bad fantasy player obviously, I just like Suarez better for the .5.

Don't like Cahill in defense, weekend was a bit of a fluke, they have lousy fixtures. I like everything else, a little different.

Nothing, unless you like waiting for set pieces or some mishap. Out of you strikers he had the least upside, as he has the easier game to execute the scouting report on. And as far as Arsenal, I think he will play simply because of their CB injuries, but still remember for him, Wes Brown is about as easy as it could get @ 6'0".

im going with a GK combo of vorm/ruddy till GW10.

WIG, SUN, WBA, WBA, SUN, STK, SWA, wol, BLA

and rotating 3rd defender with brown, simpson and hall (yes QPR).
A QPR defender looks nice for the weeks sunderland and newcastle look not so nice.

NEW, FUL, NEW, STK, BLA, WBA, BLA, WIG, AV

just the 2nd NEW and 2nd BLA fixture for QPR, when SUN are home to CHE and NEW home to TOT respectively.

with these cheapies and moses as the cheapest front 8 option, the rest of my squad is loaded. I dont expect huge returns from these two spots but the idea is with these fixtures i can sniff a couple of cleanies and have much more flexibility for the front 8, where i think the real money is made. Hope to build team value to where by week 10 i can afford to upgrade my keeper without sacrificing too much in the outfield. If the experiment fails, i have 10 weeks to gradually change it without taking hits, i hope. Maybe I WC. Anyway, im on this ship sink or swim.

yeah wigan wolves rotate rather well, was thinking of al habsi/de vries or hennessey combo at start of season, then i thought why have two rubbish keepers for 9 mil when i can have two rubbish keepers for 8 mil!!

just noticed it said vorm/ruddy not given/ruddy 😳
Yeah wouldn't look at the wigan/wolves combo defensively.
I see what you're saying but given's (or schwarzer) fixtures for the opening 10 gw's make him great value at 5.0.
I usually spend a bit more on gk's than most on here, given/begovic for 10.0 should be top value this season but no point getting begovic until wildcard.
Good luck with it though fuzzy, word of warning the carson/harper combo ended in tears for many 😉

Brave. I wouldn't have a goalie combo that weak. Given was my second highest scoring player this week...

Splashing out on a 5.0 keeper will help you long term. You can straight swap Given for Begovic, Foster, Schwarzer etc.

I like your idea of Brown, Simpson, Hall though. It was my plan for my initial team except Gabbidon failed miserably.

Rooney. Unless you feel like a man.

This is a complete no brainer unless you need the differential. Rooney is owned by 31% of teams (probably more as people find the unlimited transfers) and is a proven goldmine. We know he'll play and he has two home games coming up against teams without amazing defences.
Torres is owned by 5% of teams, has easier fixtures and will almost certainly play. He is, however, a massive question mark and fluffed a lot of his lines against Stoke. All we have to go on is that he is long due a double hat trick.

So Rooney. Unless you feel like a man.

    Team set for this week.

Who should be captain - Rooney (Tot H), Bent (Bla H) or Baines (QPR H)?

Also who should get the nod to start - DJ Campbell (Eve A) or Jose Enrique (Ars A)?

    Any replies would be great

Don't like the Liverpool defence. They should be rock solid but always seem to leave the back man open to pull a draw from the jaws of victory. Captain I'd say Rooney is safer choice but Bent will potentially get more points. I don't like captaining defenders for whatever reason.

Talk to me about this line up - Players in CAPS are new from GW1. Any advice greatly apprecaited. Main worry is Chelsea attacking coverage, stuck with Malouda atm.

    Given

    Terry, Kompany, BOSINGWA, (BROWN, Simpson)

    Malouda, CAHILL, Sessengon, SINCLAIR, (Fox)

    HOLT, ROONEY, SUAREZ

I like it on the whole.

Seems to be missing a little bit of firepower which has gone to the defense.

Man City attack could be hard to fit in. Not a fan of Cahill at 9.0 because it's such an awkward price and because he's reliant on goals for all his points.

Plan for MANC attack would be downgrade Malouda/Cahill to Yaya or Rooney to Augero. Just want to wait and see how MANC react to CL games (rotation) and playing some of the more established PL teams.

Cahill is an intersting option I am considering because with new assist rule (free kicks count as an assist for player fouled when scored from) plus his regular goals I think he may bound out of the gates. I have my eye on Adam, Downing, Yaya or Nzogbia as a replacement. Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

Malouda v Torres is the Chelsea options for me, going to stick with Malouda. Not sold on Malouda nut if he is ever going to deliver its at home versus WBA i say!
Suarez will be a top 5 point scorer this year if he stay injury free.
Bent is hit or miss, I read somewhere that he had zero shots on goal last week? (except for the disallowed goal), that does not cut it for me.

im really going to be testing my resolve with including young over nani in my squad. The boards here seem to overwhelm Nani considerably, but I think young is the better choice, and when valencia is fit, the safer choice. Now i got to wait till saturday am until the peer pressure subsides.

Might be a good decision. As a United fan I reckon that Young could well end up a more permanent member of the starting XI than Nani, and when Valencia comes backs this may dislodge Nani if he continues to be so freakin inconsistent!

Nani is an OT specialist on last season's form. I eliminated this debate and shipped in Rooney instead.

I reckon within a couple months young will be considered a "must have". Should be key for utd this season and at that price you want a set piece hog.
Nani will obviously still get good hauls but I fancy young to be much more consistent.

Looks good. I'd start Moses over Enrique since he won't keep a clean sheet against arsenal and moses looked lively against Norwich. Baines (C) could pay off big time

probably. I think they'll do very well attacking and defensively these next few weeks

more like self inflicted, non-lethal pain. Like papercuts across the bridge of your nose. It will hurt, but it wont kill you.

Hello to the 3 or 4 people hanging about.

Should I boot out Nani for N'Zog and change Bent to Rooney? Same coverage but I know Nani scores all over the place whenever he's not in my team.

I think people need to find 12.0 for Lamps. He's the best option in mid and attack for the expensive big name players and has the best fixtures by FAR.

Malouda, Torres, Drogba...all risks. to either start or for production. Lamps will deliver.

United's fixtures look nasty. why spend 12.0 on Rooney or RVP when Lamps will be the one to have for the next run of fixtures and is the safest bet?

Why is everybody so convinced on Enrique? I'm not convinced he's always a starter when Aurelio is back and 'Pool's fixtures aren't that great.

Enrique is consistent, he is 4 times the player Aurelio is.

Pool was looking to cement a LB for ages and they landed Enrique.
      I reckon he's nailed for a while..
