The Digest – a new regular. The concept is simple – capture the Gameweek past under three headings, assessing the player, the team and the one event that has the Fantasy Football community stirring.

Gameweek One provided an easy introduction, although sadly, around the genius of one Argentinian and the artistry of a sparkling Monday night display, some of its events are best forgotton.

The Player

Sergio Aguero
Late to the party, Sergio Aguero transformed the Gameweek in thirty minutes by dismantling Swansea with two goals and a smart assist for David Silva’s third goal. Busy and bustling, Aguero’s impressive industry was surpassed by moments of brilliance, capped by a 20-yard drive that dipped and curled away from the grasp of Vorm – a keeper who had, for so long, repelled City’s best efforts.

Any doubts that Aguero would take time adjusting to Premier League life were extinguished – concerns that Mancini’s men would need more matches to gel with their new talisman quelled. The link up play with Silva, in particular, looks to have the potential to dismantle defences and Aguero clearly has the end product to convert the creative spark supplied by the Spaniard.

Fantasy Managers will have revised their plans of the back of the half-hour cameo. Suddenly Aguero is no longer a “wait and see” prospect – he’s firmly in our plans with heavy investment heading his way.

The Team

Man City
City’s slow ascent from a teasing tormentor to ultimate destroyers of Swansea’s plucky Premier League baptism sent a clear message to their title rivals. The firepower available to Roberto Mancini is clearly devastating, reinforced considerably by Aguero’s explosive introduction on the hour-mark.

Around the Argentinian, last season’s campaigners stepped up accordingly. David Silva conjured and cajoled in midfield, linking play, seeking the ball, dazzling the visitors forlorn attempts to shackle his influence. Yaya Toure was immense – by pushing his presence further up the pitch, Mancini turned the game, imprisoned Swansea in their own half and was able to sustain the pressure to such a degree, breaking point was inevitable. Even Edin Dzeko, rejuvenated by a pre-season and clean slate, toiled as the lone striker before providing the focal point for Aguero to buzz around with such effect. A 75-minute appearance for Adam Johnson, the usual smattering of step-overs this time accompanied by an end product as he provided the ammunition for Dzeko’s crucial opener.

Behind all finery, Vincent Kompany marshalled a defence which started the campaign with a clean sheet – the first of many for a defence which topped the rankings last term.

We shouldn’t be seduced too easily – Swansea’s resistance seemed to drain once Dzeko breached their defence; clearly Brendan Rodgers has a lot of work to do before his outfit can compete with such an effective foe. However, it’s apparent that City’s attacking talent bristles with Fantasy potential and with defensive resolve also on offer, the temptation to boost the City quota in our lineups is strong.

The Talking Point

Fantasy Premier League Woes
Much as we’d like to dwell on some sparkling on-field displays, the Fantasy Gameweek was dominated by the problems suffered by the Fantasy Premier League game. Demand on Friday evening created issues which ultimately saw the service disrupted with managers unable to log on to tweak their lineups and new managers denied the opportunity to sign-up. Despite toiling overnight and a brief window of normality from 5am onwards, big demand again on Saturday morning again threatened the service and Friday night’s issues returned.

Live points were disabled while the service looked to recover and it wasn’t until Sunday that the FPL began to edge back to near working order.

Yesterday came the apology for the issues – the FPL have taken the step to lift the cost on transfers leading up to this weekend’s deadline and emphasised the option or mini-league admins to scrap Gameweek One’s tallies. New monthly prizes were introduced; an extra incentive for Gameweek’s 2-4 thrown into the mix. Inevitably, the solution left some feeling aggrieved and there’s still concerns that the message has yet to reach those who play the game. There’s still confusion.

In truth, the FPL manager just wants stability. We want the game to get back on its feet, to make a recovery and to reinvigorate our Fantasy seasons. We’ve got everything crossed for Gameweek Two. We hope to be talking football in next week’s digest.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Some thoughts on Lampard please...

I think people need to find 12.0 for Lamps. He’s the best option in mid and attack for the expensive big name players and has the best fixtures by FAR.

Malouda, Torres, Drogba…all risks. to either start or for production. Lamps will deliver.

United’s fixtures look nasty. why spend 12.0 on Rooney or RVP when Lamps will be the one to have for the next run of fixtures and is the safest bet?

I'm definitely getting him. People always slate him on here yet if he keeps injury free you can pretty much guarantee 180+ points. He's also the safest captaincy option for GW2 and 3 so he's the first name on my revised team.

Seriously though, Lampard is a fine choice but give people 20mil to spend on 3 strikers and they start making whiny noises.

He doesn't justify 12mil for me atm moment. Having a 12mil mid breaks the balance of the squad completely for me - esp when the emphasis this year is now aimed at beefy forwards and defenders.

Torres I think will come good - just a matter of time. Malouda still has more chance of starting than warming the bench.

Rooney - from what I've heard, he will be playing a deeper role. Now this was a negative and ppl did stray away from him, but given his goal scoring propensity and again the new PPI coming into play, he justifies 12mil for me.

RvP is another story - his performance will very much depend on how the rest of the team fronts up after the loss of Fab.

      Upgrade Ruddy.

      You've got to.

The rest of your team is stellar by the way. The only thing is you'll be benching Moses in almost every game, so might as well get Dyer or Surman instead and save the 0.5m.

I'm also not too keen on Odemwingie just yet. Needs to prove his fitness.

my thought is having to bench moses if/when i do is a blessing. How often are all 8 of your front men fit and coming off a good performance.

could do sessegnon/dyer instead of sinclair/moses

wingie just needs to be ready by GW 3. Maybe im foolish but im bringing him in now and benching him. trying as hard as i can to field a team that doesnt need transfers GW2 unless injuries hit hard.

Actually, if you choose well and use your transfers wisely, you should have a front 7 which play every week for at least the next 5 gameweeks. By then, Moses' run will be over and he'll be taking up 0.5 every week.

i may be holding moses all year. Hes the only fantasy mid under 6.0 that has potential for 6.0+ type production. There may be a week where Young doesnt start or suarez doesnt start or torres doesnt start. I think its worth the .5 to have a guy like moses fill in than a 4.5 option.

id go so far as to say the .5 gap between moses and a 4.5 mid is the biggest gap in the game.

a few options that I'd say are worth it: baines & brown > riise & lescott. Or odemwingie who's injured and maybe unsettled with bids being rejected > fletcher who's picked up where he left off last season. Or young > cahill. Or sinclair & wingie > hoolahan & zamora.

i had dzeko in my GW1 team, but have hauled him off for aguero. there's talk that tevez might still end up suiting up, in which case dzeko goes back to the bench, and you'll have already cost yourself a few hundred thousand to get aguero (unless you go for the more expensive tevez) and surely you'll want ONE of those two.

Okay so.. now that we've 100% established that there'll be no price rises this week...

For the purpose of building team value is anyone still tempted to get guys like Suarez, Aguero, Cahill etc
It seems that a lot of players are still unaware of the unlimited transfers so i'll bet that after the 11:30 deadline on saturday the same transfers continue in their droves for the same players throughout the day.
I'm not sure I want to buy Aguero just yet, but I might have to in case he's set to rise to 11.3 / 11.4 by GW4

I think it's more likely that they'll get decent but not amazing points between then and ownership will drift back down, losing money overall. If you're going to all 3 you'll probably break even but I can't see them being goldmines. We had the drop on the transfers but the price freeze eliminates it imo.

Potentially, but Everton are notoriously slow starters, and missing the first week won't have helped I reckon. Read the article I just posted too, the fans aren't particularly optimistic, some even saying they'll lose against QPR.

All these RMTs we have are really a waste of time, cast your minds back one week . The forum gurus were critiquing all the RMTs , "change this , change that etc , so everyone ended up with the same (low scoring ) players.

Not much has changed , except just one week on we are all recommending different players !!!!

Im half tempted to stick with my original team , because you all know whats going to happen , our original teams are going to outscore our new ones. Bound to happen

Quite. The only thing that has changed is certain punts now become certs as proven starters. And everyone can pipe down about Taarabt.

        Proven starters? After one game.

Last week Drogba expected to play , many have him , orres is chosen. Same people swith from Drogba to Torres , what will happen? Maybe Drogba will start.

Some people were starting because other players still lacked match fitness or had been playing in coapa america etc. Others were rewarded for good pre season .
Dosent mean they are proven starters.

Every season someone scores in the first week and then goes on to do nothing , who will it be this year?

Well now Nzogbia has an easier fixture , yet nobody wants him !!
    Same with Bent

Taabaat Is on the losing side , in oine game and nobody wants him despite still being the main playmaker

Sinclair , forgotten about because Dyer in the same team did a few dribbles.

Gone for Bosingwa with a view to swapping him for Enrique down the line, might go with Alex but will wait til Chelsea press conference.
Torres will be probably be downgraded to Aguero in a few weeks.

Which means I may well pick Saha for a few games with a veiw to downgrading to Sturridge after his ban.

Torres will play 90% of games, AVB will want to make his mark on the team and pull away from Mourinhos team that did so well 4-5 years ago.

and Torres still being relatively young is probaly going to be the base on which the team is built around. Drogba is 33 now, if they keep relying on him to win games, then they are gonna be in the same position they have been for the last 2 seasons.

Hmm, when we won the Premier League and FA Cup double I don't think we fell short to Man Utd, did we? So you're wrong there. At the start of last season when everyone was fit we were winning the majority of our games, then when we had a lot of injuries our results turned sour, and then recovered the best form in the league when they were fit again, that proves me right and you wrong. And Man U didn't win the champions league, Barcelona did, so whats wrong with being knocked out by Man U? They were only knocked out themselves in the final. So, again, you saying we'll be in the same postion we have been in the last two seasons is saying that we will win when everyone is fit. Maybe pay attention to what is actually happening in future.

They have won the title once in the last 5 years, with Man Utd winning the other 4. I would call that falling short.

They are getting a lot of injuries because all there players are nearly 30+ now and are gonna keep picking up injuries.

They need to bring in some fresh faces, look at Man Utd - they lost good places like Scholes/G.Neville/VDS and Giggs is coming to an end of his career but they already have replacements for all these players.

and you don't find anything wrong with losing to Man Utd in the champions league? As a Chelsea fan I assumed you would want to beat them wouldn't you? :/

When you look at VIL fixtures, there are really on three options: Given, Zoggers and Bent.

Bent has probably now slipped down the rankings so that leaves you with Zoggers. I guess the risk with having him now is the fact that he is in that settling in period where returns can not be guaranteed somewhat.

So, after three of the most tumultuous days in fantasy footy history, where are we now at?

An extra wildcard, some solid defensive performances with a plethora of ubercheapies to choose from and the early return of Suarez and Aguero.

I guess the optimum forward line right now is: Aguero, Suarez and Torres?

This leaves a somewhat vacuous midpark: Moses, Silva, Sess, 5miller, 7 miller.

All of the above with the inclusion of Mr Baines. Bad K has goneburger.

Is this scenario familiar with your current team? To Baines or not to Baines?

Me too. Expensive defenders are the baines of my life.

However, cleenies, OOP, boni, assists and the odd goal will likely garner a rather decent points return from this juicy fixture run.

The other drawcard with Baines is this extra w/c. He can be got rid of relatively quickly as you are looking at playing the next w/c by week 10 in most cases.
