Harry Redknapp admits Luka Modric could leave, as long as he gets time to replace him. Chelsea join Arsenal in the race for Juan Mata. QPR’s new owner Tony Hernandes wants Scott Parker at Loftus Road and Theo Walcott has faith in Arsene Wenger. Here’s today’s Scribbles:

Harry Redknapp has admitted he would consider allowing Luka Modric to leave Spurs. Far as he’s concerned, though, it has to happen sooner rather than later in order to give him the time to bring in reinforcements:

He’s had his head turned. I want to see him here at the start of the year, but if he goes then you get three or four players in. They’re your options: get the money and get four players and, in all honesty, have a better team, or keep Luka, who is a fantastic player.”

“There’s no chance the chairman will sell him on the last day of the transfer window. He did that with Berbatov a few years ago and ended up with no strikers. He won’t do that again.

Redknapp reckons his move for former Arsenal forward Emmanuel Adebayor will be looked upon favourably by Spurs fans. Adebayor sparked controversy a couple of seasons back by running the length of the pitch to celebrate a goal for Man City front of the Gunners fans and Redknapp reckons that will win the Tottenham supporters over. Having already acquired William Gallas from the Gunners in his time at White Hart Lane, Redkanpp clearly doesn’t let the club’s North London rivalry affect his transfer thinking:

Arsenal fans hate him so Tottenham fans will love him. He’s got an advantage by upsetting them. He’ll be a hero.

Chelsea have joined Arsenal in the race for Valencia’s Juan Mata. The Blues have been relatively quiet in the summer transfer market so far but are aiming to pip Arsene Wenger’s side for the playmaker’s services as Andre Villas-Boas looks to bring in more creativity. Reports suggest Chelsea are on the verge of a double transfer raid on Villas-Boas’ old club Porto. Joao Moutinho and Alvaro Pereira were key components of the Portuguese club’s brilliant 2010/11 season and the Chelsea boss is determined to wrestle them away before the transfer deadline in 13 days time.

With Arsenal decimated by injuries and suspension, young Carl Jenkinson looks set to start at right-back against Liverpool on Saturday. Bacary Sagna will move to left-back to step in for the inured Kieran Gibbs and with such a depleted line-up looking likely for the Emirates match, Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez will be heading to the Gunners with plenty optimism.

Tony Fernandes’ imminent takeover of QPR’s is set to spark a host of new signings at Loftus Road. Bids for Scott Parker and Shaun Wright-Phillips are already rumoured to be lined up as Neil Warnock looks for reinforcements ahead of the end of August deadline.

It‘s been a tough old week for Arsene Wenger, but at least he has the support of Theo Walcott. The Arsenal winger expressed his faith in the Gunners boss and suggested dressing room morale hasn’t been affected by the recent Cesc Fabregas upheaval.

I am sure the boss has got players coming – I don’t know – but if you sell one of your best players I am sure he has got options coming in. But the mood is very good. We got a very good result at Newcastle I thought, especially going down to ten men.

Man City’s Nedum Onouha is a wanted man. Three Premier League club are after the full-back’s services, with Everton, Blackburn and QPR all eyeing up a bid. Onouha spent last season on loan at Sunderland but is clearly not part of Roberto Mancini’s plans for the season ahead and is set to leave the Etihad Stadium before the end of August.

Wigan have been linked with a move for Peter Odemwingie. The West Brom forward, however, used his official Twitter feed to assure Baggies fans that he will leave only for a top side. Arsenal and Spurs are also rumoured to be hovering.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

its on the website when you go on transfers, they are giving you free ones again this week since so many people couldnt access the website last weekend, you can also reset private leagues so that last weeks results dont count, which is tempting since im nearly bottom already!

    My thoughts on Baines:

First of all, yes, he is expensive. Especially when you look at the fact that Everton only got 9 CS last year.

However, Baines effectively plays as a midfielder. So let's compare him with some midfielders in his price bracket. Baines recorded 5 goals and 11 assists last year, with exceptionally few penalties awarded Everton.

Yaya Toure: 6 goals and 6 assists
David Silva: 4 goals and 9 assists
Walcott: 9 goals and 8 assists
    n'Zogbia: 9 goals and 7 assists
Cahill: 9 goals and 4 assists
Arteta: 3 goals and 4 assists
Downing: 7 goals and 9 assists
Bale: 7 Goals and 3 assists
Modric: 3 goals and 3 assists

Seen as a midfielder, Baines can compete with all of these players, comparing just goals and assists. In addition Baines gets clean sheets, he's on penalties and shares set pieces with injury prone Arteta.

The way I see it, don't look at Baines as a defender (and look at Evertons leaky defence previous year), but look at him as a midfielder with penalties and set pieces in a top 8 team. 8.0 is a price I'm definately paying.

Any thoughts on my analysis? Any flaws? Why shouldn't I bring Baines to my team?

yes the prospect is more important than last year's record.
like silva, most of these number came in the second half of the season
walcott bale arteta cahill ddnt play half the nbr of games baines did
      toure & modric are overpriced
but despite all this, he's still the best defender there at the moment

Baines took them last year, after Arteta missed one. However, it's not certain that Baines will take them, but I think he will. Will obviously have to monitor the situation.

In my mind, Baines can compete even without spotkick duties.

Arteta takes the pens, Baines played more minutes than Silva, Arteta, Walcott, Yaya, Bale or Cahill, who are the best on that list.

And Baines had an exellent year, so it is very hard to repeat, like the housing market, the trend does not move up forever.

Sorry to the Scout, but one other page had a good article about Baines: http://premierleaguefantasy.blogspot.com/2011/08/offensive-defense.html

If you still want to criple your offence after that be my guest. Because I may be wrong and look like an idiot after 3 weeks.

I don't really get this article... The underlying argument for omitting baines is that his points per £m will be quite similar to ,say jags or distin...

But if you think about it, a £5m player who gets 100 points will have the same pp£m as a £10m who gets 200 points... This doesn't mean you drop a 200 points per season player! There has to come a point where pp£m is discarded as a selection metric, and I think in baines case he should be good for at least 160 pts this year, with 3 tasty home games in his first 4, now is as good a time as any to bet on him picking up some of those ~160- odd pts.

Thats a very compelling arguement man and I am even swayed a little. But the fact that Arteta was injured for a large majority of last season was a big factor in why he gained so many points. I still think he'll be on his share of the set piece duties...just not as much as last year....IMO, although I could very well be talking outta my...

The other thing to think about in Baines favour is the bonus points. Gibbs for Arsenal got good bonus points last match based on crosses from what I gather and I can see Baines putting in as many crosses as any other player, let alone defender so should be in line for some good bonuses.

Posted this already but just seen this relevent discussion on Baines!

I decided to calculate how many extra attacking points Baines would need to just score the same points as a defender on one of the top 3 clean sheet teams. Should help see if he’s worth the extra money.

(This assumes that the defenders at these teams won’t pick up attacking points, get booked, will play all games, etc)

      10/11
      Everton CS 9
#1 Man City CS 18 so Baines needs 36 attacking points
#2 Man Utd 15 so Baines needs 24 attacking points
#3 Chelsea 15 so Baines needs 24 attacking points

      09/10
      Ev 11
#1 Man Utd 19 so Baines needs 32 attacking points
#2 Chelsea 18 so Baines needs 28 attacking points
#3 Liverpool 17 so Baines needs 24 attacking points

      08/09
      Ev 17
#1 Man Utd CS 24 so Baines needs 28 attacking points
#2 Chelsea 22 so Baines needs 20 attacking points
#3 Liverpool 20 so Baines needs 12 attacking points

My thoughts are: Baine's supremeacy last year was helped by
      a) exceptional low number of clean sheets overall
      b) the best defensive team (Man City) having their one consistent defender down as a midfielder
      c) Arteta being injured and taking on the set pieces

Beg to differ, after the Liverpool game where Seb hogs EVERY free kick and corner, his goal and assist/fluke assist possibilty is far better then Sess potensial oop hype. Sunderland have a few more attackers (Wickham for one) who knocks on the door behind Gyan.
If Sunderland play 4-4-2 with Sess as OP, larsson still does what he does. If Sunderland play 4-4-2 with 2 strikers, Larsson - STILL do what he does, and where´s sess then?

Providing he makes it through tonight without blowing a hammy I'm seriously tempted to take a punt on VDV.
This is 50% due to his penalties, excellent set plays and ability to score against even the top teams.
    And 50% because I'm a Spurs fan.

Yeah I've seen the fixtures but the other options in his price range:
Young - not got great fixtures, not on penalties, sharing direct free-kicks with Rooney and could possibly be rotated.
Nani - as above with higher rotation probability.
Silva - not got penos, may assist the assist too often, how will he slot into the team when Nasri joins.
        Malouda - rotation risk.

I wanted Cech because he is the best GK in the league

His replacements we all know are quite dodgy even with chelsea's good defence

You want a certain percentage of your team long termers, a certain percentage short-term prospects.

Getting all long termers is a definite waste of possibilities.

Depends on the rest of your team - I think with Cahill on the pitch you could get better value from him... Baines is Baines though!
