[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

Other than Chelsea’s home game against Norwich, the top six from last season all have a tricky fixture this weekend. With no obvious targets amongst the usual suspects, then, it may be an ideal time to take a bit of a punt on a ‘Differential’.

This week’s three picks all have less than 0.6% ownership putting them on the riskier end  of the Differential scale but as we saw with Andy Carroll’s leap from 2% to 50% last season, a decent run of form and a couple of goals can change that in a heartbeat….

Ross Barkley

David Moyes has publicly stated that he intends to protect the young star by easing him in gently, but Ross Barkley has been outstanding in Everton’s last two matches, and it’s very hard to see him being dropped against Blackburn. Barkley’s performance on the left of midfield was one of very few positives Moyes will have taken from the QPR game; his ability to take players on and make clever forward passes is something that has been sorely lacking in Everton’s play of late, and another strong performance midweek where he picked up an assist will only strengthen his claim.

Against Sheffield United, Everton lined up as a 4-2-3-1 with three creative players in Arteta, Barkley and Osman behind a lone striker and they looked a much better side as a result. Moyes will be expected to stick with a similar lineup for the trip to Ewood Park then, the only changes likely to be Rodwell and Anichebe making way for Cahill and Saha – Barkley should keep his spot on the left. With an ownership of just 0.6% (that’s less than a fifth of those that have Phil Neville), and coming in significantly cheaper than Cahill or Osman at just 5.0m, Barkley looks a great differential option for the next couple of weeks.

Jonas Olsson

With the best ranked fixtures of any side in our ‘next six ticker’ including a home tie on Sunday against a Stoke side still recovering from Thursday’s Europa League game, it could be a great time to look at investing in West Brom. Although Somen Tchoyi, Paul Scharner and Nicky Shorey were all considered as potential ‘Differentials’, we eventually went with the safe starting role and occasional goal threat of Swedish International, Jonas Olsson. West Brom had a woeful defensive record last season, but we’re expecting a marked improvement this season now that Hodgson has had time to really work with his team and with 21 points on the Premier League’s EA index, Olsson also offers the potential of bonus points along the way.

Coming in at 4.5m and ownership of 0.6% in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Olsson is definitely in the budget ‘Differential’ category but has the added advantage of having home and away fixtures rotate perfectly with Aston Villa – with so many managers opting for Given or other Villa defenders Olsson could be a great long term pick even when fixtures get tougher.

Junior Hoilett

Despite a poor start to the season, Blackburn will fancy their chances against Everton this weekend, and Hoilett looks the pick of the bunch after a strong performance at Aston Villa last weekend. He was easily the most creative attacking outlet in the Blackburn side in that game, and it was his clever play and skill on the ball that led to their only goal; a perfectly delivered cross into Pederson, after beating two defenders.

Hoilett made the picks twice last season, and duly delivered the goods with a goal in each game so we’re hoping he can make it three successes in a row (assuming Everton are 5-0 up at the time, obviously). His place in the side looks pretty nailed on for the season and at 6.0m and ownership of 0.5%, could be a great value pick as a third striker.

I am thinking as I have paid 12 for Lamps I really should captain him especially against norwich at home but I cant pull the trigger

Go with Fat Frank. I want to captain Torres because of the smug satisfaction I'll feel if it pays off but I can't bring myself to do it. Lampard is a much safer bet. They don't call him Mr Reliable for nothing.

Alex is a worry for me this weekend, could easily be dropped for Ivan. For what it's worth, I'm sticking with him for now with a half-decent bench option ready to come in.

Also, bench Yaya. Seems to be playing too deep away atm

I would bench Yaya. I was going to bench him ahead of Sinclir, but sold him in the end for Brunt.

I fear Toure will be playing further back this season due to the arrival of Nasri and injury to De Jong.

My team with no transfers made for this week is:

    Given
    Bosingwa Simpson Enrique
    Taarabt Sinclair N'zogbia Moses Malouda
    Rooney Torres

    Subs: Ruddy, Saha, Kompany, Brown

Do I need to make any changes to my team or is this good enough to allow me to save 2 transfers for next week.

I am really worried about not having suarez though.

    What would you suggest?

I'm not captaining Bent. He plays the 12 o clock game and if he does nothing I will be annoyed all weekend of my captain having 4 points. Then the likes of Suarez and Torres will score later and I will regret the decision. Wolves are pretty decent at the back now.

morning. No chelsea coverage at mo, so reckon its worth bringing in malouda for vdv? (vdv a punt that hasn't exactly paid off)

      VDV is not a punt

in the context of their first few fixtures, I'd say he wasn't a natural easy pick.

Not easy but the reality is VDV is on corners, pens & free kicks! He's a certain starter and is playing out-of-position up front. Hard to ignore all that regardless of fixtures. He'll also get knock-downs from Adebyor to score some goals.

Fair points, that was my thinking from onset, just weighing up likelihood of chelsea riot today - only other option of yaya out doesn't free enough cash so would need to take a hit. I'll have a think. Cheers

    Vorm
    Simpson / Bosingwa / Kompany
Yaya Toure / Sinclair / Lampard / Moses / Sessegnon
    Rooney (c) / Suarez (vc)

    Given / Brown / Saha / Senderos

    Any obvious mistakes on selection?
    Any obvious transfers to make?

    Thanks

transfer yaya to somebody else! he probably won't get into attack much which means odds of getting more than a 2 point return from him are low

Last week folk on here were going mental after another no show from Torres. This week it looks like all is forgotten and forgiven 🙂

I kept faith in Drogba from GW1 to GW2, but he had to go as I can't deal with the uncertainty every week. In fact most of the pony team I fielded last week has gone.

Is this last chance saloon for Torres then? I thought from everyone's (ok maybe not you personally) reaction last week he was out the door. Good luck to all who kept the faith. But I have a feeling this is Drogba's week. Why? Because I shipped him out and it's the law of the sod.

Going to stick with him for this week. So yes, last chance saloon for me.

Looking at the fixtures before the season, i picked Torres, as i wanted him for the 1st 3 games. 2/3 done, and i might as well see it through now. No better opportunity than against Norwich, the weakest of the 3 opening fixtures.

I agree Demi. But even if Torres scores 4 today, I think I'm still gonna sell.

I am too. Only picked him for the 1st three, so he's out the door this week for RVP

Think Torres and Drogba will both start. If they can't play them both at home to Norwich, when can they?

well i think he'll start only because beckford was really bad last GW. no other news at the moment sorry.
(keep him on the bench as he may endup playing for doubtful moses)
