This afternoon has seen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) update the stats after reviewing a couple of incidents from last weekend’s games.

Under this season’s new assist ruling (below), Wayne Rooney has another assist to his name, given for his role in this Ashley Young goal (1min03sec).

It’s a decision that’s likely to cause plenty consternation across the Fantasy world and is arguably as contentious as any Bonus Points decision that’s gone by. Under the letter of the law, though, it seems it must be applied. The Bonus Points for the match will stand, though, with Ashley Young still having a greater EA Sports PPI.

Elsewhere, Martin Petrov was awarded an assist for his role in Bolton’s late consolation at Anfield.

Crossing Potential
Certainly it seems that players supplying crosses may well be in line for increased assists. Perhaps it’s only speculation but, given that this rule change has thrown up an early example of an assist awarded which wouldn’t be given last season, we should perhaps expect more examples and an increase in assists from crossed balls.

It seems that even if a cross is unsuccessful, then, it could still be turned into a potential assist if the defending side’s clearance falls at the feet of the right opposition player, a la Ashley Young. The likes of Leighton Baines and Stewart Downing –given their number of crosses- are suddenly a little more appealing.

Assists
Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal.

In the event of a penalty or free-kick, the player earning the penalty or free-kick gets an assist if a goal is directly scored, but not if he takes it himself, in which case no assist is given.

All assists are reviewed before the points are updated at the end of each day.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Of course it is! Yes, technically the last player to touch the ball, but did he really assist the goals by even moving the ball towards Rooney? Not disagreeing they were not technical assists, but in reality...no

As ab says below, if you meant cheap, then you have a point. But if you're saying it's not an assist, then I don't know how else to argue against it - other than it's clearly an assist.

guess you mean cheap in which case i agree. rooney and young got some luck this week, it's magnified as they already had such mammoth scores anyway. hopefully people who lose out to this gain a dodgy assist down the line. then ideally fpl scrap this rule next seasn.
think this change could apply to many things in life. complain about something then when something new replaces it you realise the old wasn't so bad after all. arsenal fans may get a taste of this soon

It seems to be down to Norwich's new rotation approach. There was a discussion about it on Soccer Saturday. Lambert apparently feels that by regularly rotating players he can avoid injuries. Against Stoke the argument was the likelihood of an injury to Hoolihan and Surman, while at Chelsea I think it was little more than he had already admitted defeat and didn't want to risk injury.

Seems a little mad tbh, especially when Norwich's promotion was gained through a consistant starting 11 all year.

Can anyone confirm my belief that the EA Points (that inform the bonus points) are based on their own measurements and not whether FPL award an assist or not?

i.e. FPL may award an assist but if EA's measurements/data don't consider it an assist then it won't count towards the PPI and hence bonuses?

    hypothetical questions:
    1) if arsenal and chelsea swapped fixtures these first 3 games would chelsea be on 1 point and arsenal 7?

      like you said, hypothetical.

      1) imo Chelsea could have picked up more than 1 pt from Arsenal's 3 fixtures, but Arsenal would not get 7 pts from Chelsea's. Chelsea could well have beaten Newcastle on the first day, even if they didnt I think they could have taken at least 1 point from Liverpool, who were lacklustre until teh 71st minute; Chelsea would have found the net by then imo. They would have lost against MU, but certainly not by 8 goals. Arsenal, however - if they cant beat NEwcastle away then they shouldnt have been able to beat Stoke away; I reckon they would probably have lost against WBA as well since WBA put up a good fight against Chelsea. Norwich, well, I'll give them that.

      2) Highly unlikely that Rooney would be injured for the whole season. At the moment he actually adds experience to MU's young side; without that experience I dont think we will be able to cope with the bigger sides away from home.

The Lukaku loan deal to Stoke has broken down because the Premier League do not allow players to be sent out on loan in the same transfer window that they joined the parent club (BBC).

If this is true, then HOW did Chelsea sign Thibaut Courtois (goalkeeper from Genk) earlier this summer then send him out on loan on the same day? Its a situation that has definitely been seen more times than one before, so why are the PL using some random unknown rule now to block Lukaku to Stoke? Any explanations?

      Rooney crossed.

Traore, while in his box, headed the ball clear (NOT a deflection).

Young got the clearance (crap clearance) and scored.

      Rooney got an assist.

    My team

    Given/Vorm
    Komp/Jags/Rjohnson/Enrique.Simpson
    Yaya.Brunt/Young/Moses/Sess
    Rooney/Suarez/Dzeko

Already made my two free trades to get in young and dzeko. Only concern is no silva/nasri. Would I be mad to WC to shoehorn in Nasri or hold fire?

Zlatan, imo hold fire. That's a good enough team to play next week, besides who would you transfer out?

SZ, never, repeat never use a WC for one transfer, that would be an incredible waste. But I would get either Silva/Nasri in the next transfer window, MC are too hot to not at the mo.

QPR fixtures look quite good over the next 5 fixtures. Anyone think Taarabt will finally fulfil his preseason promise?

I'm sure one or two those long-range hopeful shots of his will go in at some point and then the bandwagon will ensue 😉

All the cheap pre season bandwagons were, as expected, rubbish. (still strangely fun though).

    Sturridge or Kevin Doyle(+0.6 mil)?

Any other strikers in the 5.5-6.5 range that are appealing?

I kneejerked in Best from Newcastle for 5, but have no expectation of him ever taking the field. Unlike everyone else I'm going for 2 big forwards, not 3.

So, unlimited deflections in the box now.......

In theory 11 different players from the opposition can touch the ball before the goalscorer and his teamate will still get the assist

Ha ha yes. They could in fact play keepy-ups, every man for himself, headers and volleys etc for 20 minutes or so. As long as the ball stays in the box

The ball can even go out of play, if player A shoots and misses resulting in a goalkick and said goalkick goes directly from player B who then scores. However this need a ball boy to throw the ball to the keeper, ifthe keepereft the box to collect the ball it wouldn't count LOL

A goal-kick has to go out of the 18 yard box but it's a nice imaginitive thought

No, not from my understanding. If a ball is cleared from the box and it is touched by a teammate outside the box, then any subsequent goal will not have an assist.
