This afternoon has seen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) update the stats after reviewing a couple of incidents from last weekend’s games.

Under this season’s new assist ruling (below), Wayne Rooney has another assist to his name, given for his role in this Ashley Young goal (1min03sec).

It’s a decision that’s likely to cause plenty consternation across the Fantasy world and is arguably as contentious as any Bonus Points decision that’s gone by. Under the letter of the law, though, it seems it must be applied. The Bonus Points for the match will stand, though, with Ashley Young still having a greater EA Sports PPI.

Elsewhere, Martin Petrov was awarded an assist for his role in Bolton’s late consolation at Anfield.

Crossing Potential
Certainly it seems that players supplying crosses may well be in line for increased assists. Perhaps it’s only speculation but, given that this rule change has thrown up an early example of an assist awarded which wouldn’t be given last season, we should perhaps expect more examples and an increase in assists from crossed balls.

It seems that even if a cross is unsuccessful, then, it could still be turned into a potential assist if the defending side’s clearance falls at the feet of the right opposition player, a la Ashley Young. The likes of Leighton Baines and Stewart Downing –given their number of crosses- are suddenly a little more appealing.

Assists
Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal.

In the event of a penalty or free-kick, the player earning the penalty or free-kick gets an assist if a goal is directly scored, but not if he takes it himself, in which case no assist is given.

All assists are reviewed before the points are updated at the end of each day.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

On the Rooney 'assist', can someone explain why he got the assist but no Liverpool player got one for Ramseys OG last week. In both cases 2 Arsenal players touched the ball before it went in?!

A joke of an award. I can handle not having Rooney in my team, it was my choice after all. I can handle people getting 38 points as Rooney earned them, but I can't take it when he gets 3 (or 6) that arent warranted. FPL are making some joke of the scoring this season between this and the Bonus system.

Give me last years system any day, and that was flawed!

The player from the conceding team who touches the ball immediately before the OG-scorer 'scores' should get negative points for an 'own-assist'. I may propose this to FPL Towers, juet to make things more bizarre and confusing.

This reminds me of the first Fifa for Sega Megadrive.. if you scored an own goal, say purposefully, as soon as the ball crossed the line the camera would zoom around to whatever player on the other team touched the ball last and he'd go off celebrating for himself.

I have Rooney but those 3 points need to be taken away.
The BPs are a joke. Either get rid of them altogether or bring back last years system, at least the monkeys were right the odd time.

Yes, with Miereles the last Liverpool player to touch it. Therefore hes the last player from the scoring team to touch it before someone scored...surely thats as much an assist as Rooneys?

I'm not arguing that it WAS an assist, I'm just asking why Rooneys one is but thats not?

Does anyone know how to get rid of players in mini-leagues? I run a cash mini league, and many ppl have not paid yet (deadline was yday).
I used to suspend players, and they would be gone. Not this year (surprisingly....).
FPL should spend less time reviewing stupid 'assists' and concentrate on the technical problems they have still not resolved after 3 weeks

I'm not an admin so can't be sure, but a friend was telling me the other day that it can't be done (yet, at least). He apparently emailed FPL to ask them to do it but has had no response, and the inactive players remain in the league. Perhaps they'll add this feature mid-season.

Yep, it's a bit shoody alright. If they were going to make wholesale changes to the system (which there was nothing wring with in the first place), they should have made sure everything was good to go before the season started. It's damaging the credibility of the FPL and putting people off.

You need to be the admin. If you are click what looks like a little wheel, that gets you into the league details. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and there are 5 actions in Blue. One of them is Add League Suspensions, click on it and it brings up the name of the players in your league, not the team name but the manager's name. Click on the one or ones you want to suspend fromm your league.

I removed my team from a league and although the league has disappeared from my list of leagues, my team is still present in that league table.

Current WC team below... With RVP instead of Rooney. My twisted logic is that in only one of the next 6 GWs would I pick Rooney to outscore RVP... GW4 is a long way away mind.

    Rudd(Vorm)
    Bosingwa/Baines/S Taylor (Simpson/Briggs)
    Walcott/Mata/Brunt/Taarabt (Moses)
    RVP/Suarez/Dzeko

If Arteta stays @ Everton, I'll swap Baines & Taarabt for Silva & someone. Otherwise Dzeko will cover City returns for the time being.

Also, Steven Fletcher should have got the assist for Stephen Ward's goal against Blackburn.

I cannot see any logical reason why Rooney should get the assist after two Arsenal defenders touch the ball and it falls to Young, and Fletcher's cross is touched by the keeper and Salgado before falling to Ward.

In both cases, each of the deflections significantly alter the trajectory of the ball. Identical situations, different outcome. Nice one FPL.

They have already been emailed. 😉

I think the point is if a player alters the direction of a ball "outside the box", then it isn't an assist unless it results in an own goal, Rooney's deflections took place in the box.

So did the Wolves one. Both deflections took place inside the box. Rewatch the game if you don't believe me. There is no difference to the Rooney and Fletcher situations, but Rooney has an assist, and Fletcher doesn't.

Actually, I've thought of a reason. Rooney is well owned, (loads of people emailing FPL trying to get it awarded), and Fletcher is not well owned...

I have Fletcher but I don't want him to be awarded the assist because I don't think that it can be fairly attributed to him after two opposing players touch the ball.

I just don't think Rooney should have the assist either.

Not sure on Mereiles for the Arsenal own goal against Liverpool as it touched two Arsenal players, but one of them was the own goal scorer. This one should probably be given.

I believe that Young's second assist against West Brom should stand, as again the second West Brom player, Steven Reid, can be regarded as the 'goal scorer', and therefore only one player between Ashley Young and the eventual goal scorer, touchers the ball.

No, he stopped the ball for Rooney after Rooney had rolled it forward when taking the free kick. Not the most flamboyant of assists, but assists nonetheless. He won't be doing that every week, at least.

What a bunch of drama queens! It really isn't that complicated - if a ball is crossed into the box and a defender clears to an opposing player who promptly scores, then an assist is given.

Why should Meireles be given an assist? The ball was cleared into the face of Ramsey and went in. 2 Arsenal players touched the ball after Meireles!

These aren't real assists as we know them but in the context of the FPL game, I quite like it. It means fullbacks are rewarded more for dangerous crosses.

By the same logic, 2 Arsenal players touched Rooney's cross before it got to Young.

The rule should be if the clearance leaves the box then no assist is given. Ie if a keeper tips on a cross then that is given if a keeperpunches thirty yards and then a player score its not an assist. Futhermore 2 x touches by opposition means no assist. Simples

Ah, didn't see the first deflection, only the headed clearance.

I assume the first deflection wasn't considered to alter the direction of the cross so is effectively ignored.

Alright, sorry chaps. Thought it was more cut and dry than that.

Park Chu-Young has signed for Arsenal. Wenger might be getting him to replace Nasri, maybe? He's got a good scoring record and decent on set-pieces, so goal and assist opportunities. If he comes in at about 7M, might be a worthwhile buy if he gets decent playing time.
