Wigan yesterday completed a deal to bring diminutive Spanish winger Albert Crusat from La Liga’s Almería to the DW Stadium. The 29 year-old arrives on a two-year contract, with the Latics having the option to extend it to a third.

Standing at just 5ft 5in, Crusat is renowned for his pace and dribbling skills and will help Roberto Martinez replace the void left by the departure of the influential Charles N’Zogbia to Aston Villa.

The Statistics

A product of the Espanyol youth system, Crusat made his debut in the 2002-03 season but never really established himself until a move to Almeria three years later. He helped lead the club to their first ever season in La Liga and his displays even had Barcelona eyeing up a move.

Crusat racked up 199 appearances at Almeria, notching 33 goals over six seasons, though a closer look at his La Liga appearances shows promise- 131 appearances in Spain’s top-flight brought 14 goals and 21 assists, indicating his eye for goal and creative ability.

In addition to his pace and trickery, Crusat has shown he’s a spiky little fella- 34 La Liga yellow cards and 2 reds indicate a temperamental, yet nonetheless talented, character.

The Prospects

Wigan started with Victor Moses and Hugo Rodallega flanking Franco Di Santo against QPR on Saturday; it was Rodallega who spent the bulk of his time on the left although he often tucked inside, allowing Maynor Figueroa to drive forward from full-back. A left-sided player, Crusat will clearly offer Martinez the option of a standard 4-4-2 with Moses perhaps taking the right-flank role.

Long-term, even with the 4-3-3 system, Di Santo will have to maintain his form to hold off Rodallega for the central striking role and that could eventually open the way for the little Spaniard to hold down a starting berth. Today’s news that Shaun Maloney is on his way from Celtic to the Latics affords Martinez further options, though, and with an increase in attackers, it may be a case of “wait and see” before he decides on a settled first XI

The Wigan boss has high hopes for his new signing…

“He will add something completely new to the squad, he has electric speed, really quick feet.. He is an explosive player, who understands how to affect games with his attributes, having earned his long experience in such a competitive, tactical and demanding league as La Liga.”

“He is compact physically, but has great upper body strength, and I am confident he can adapt quickly to the demands of the Barclays Premier League…I think our fans will take to him because he is a really exciting player, who can bring a crowd to their feet.”

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I see that Simon Kjaer has gone to Roma on loan for the season.

Obviously a destination that would have appealed given his Palermo days, but similarly given the level of interest from English clubs before his move to Wolfsburg i'm a little surprised that this one hasn't been on the radar?

No chance. Alex is probably the most gifted defender we have at the club.

We need Luiz back from injury, soon. I know he can be a liability, and I've been critical of him in the past, but with the ludicrously high defensive line we're playing at the moment, we can't get away with playing two from Terry/Ivan/Alex in the middle of defence.

Jose Enrique is a tough one. Had him from the start, he could easily go upto 5.2 by the next GW. He's likely to carry on rising but i can't see Liverpool keeping many cleansheets over the upcoming gameweeks. But by the time i want him back, he could easily be 5.5-6.

Yeah I saw that as well, apparently it's the front 4 of Rooney, Young, Nani and Welbeck that are the same as the Arsenal front 4 of 2001-2005 😛

2 expensive forwards, 1 expensive mid and 1 back over 5.5 (assuming you had Bos at 5.5 so doesnt really cut into your budget)
You're way to defender heavy IMO, there is so many backs for 4.0/4.5 and youve got one for 4.5.

Why don't Everton just sell any of their numerous incredibly overvalued players instead of Beckford for £2.5M?

If someone offers 15-20M for Rodwell or Jagielka for example, bite their bloody hands off. Beckford has actually improved and selling at that price makes no sense.

There was a time when they could have gotten £20m for Rodwell, but he just hasn't improved and doesn't look worth the money. Add the injuries, and I don't think anyone will match the asking price. They should have cashed in on him 2 years ago.

As for Jagielka, they need him so he should stay. Agree on Beckford.

It all went quiet on Rodwell though as he spent half of last season injured, and the other half out of form. Jagielka would probably be sold if a bid of £15m came in but it hasn't

I still think people would have offered £15mil+ just because he's a young English midfielder...

Well United were heavily linked with him for a long time but I don't know if any bids were made or not. We will probably sell him next year, he is going to be a top player

Or Heitinga, they don't even play him in his best position anyway and he gets a ton of money.

How did Hernandez do at the Copa America? And did he play any pre season games? I have a feeling it's Chica time!

Hernandez was great in the Gold Cup but Mexico were knocked out fairly early in the Copa America. Played a tiny bit of pre-season I think, it may well be Chica time...

Didn't play in the Copa America, but was excellent in the Gold Cup. He's back fit after the concussion but I'd give him a few weeks to get up and running. He looked lost against Arsenal

With Welbeck out don't you think he'll start against Bolton?

Most likely yeah, but I'd rather Rooney in my team.

Didn't play in the Copa America. After the Gold Cup Mexico took what was basically their U21 or U23 team to the Copa America. I'm pretty sure anyway.

Looking at a front line of Dzeko, Suarez and Chica so i can get Walcott, Mata & Nasri along with two 6.0 in midfield.

After the way I've been burned not having Rooney up until now I don't think I could go without him. Although that extra £2M would come in handy, but when Welbeck is back those two will be taking game time off each other and I don't want to use a transfer (or two or three as it'll most likely be) trying to squeeze Rooney back in.

Yeah i've been burned by Rooney aswell. Im hoping that having a good midfield will take the edge off any points Rooney scores.

Very tempted. Theo' price is hard to ignore though. Going to wait to see what transfers go through before tinkering with my wildcard.

Yeah, the CONCACAF didn't allow players to play two international tournaments so close in time, so Mexico had to take their youngsters.

I think that's a very wise move. He isn't match fit yet, but he's surely going to play with Welbeck out for 4 weeks.

I'm slightly interested in him too but it's hard to motivate buying him rather than Rooney or Young imo, and going with all 3 of them is a serious investment.
