Liverpool last night confirmed the signing of Uruguayan defender Sebastian Coates on a “long-term contract” from Nacional after the towering 20 year-old completed a medical and gained his work permit.

Coates, an imposing 6ft 6in figure, arrives fresh from claiming the young player of the tournament gong at the Copa America, where he lined up alongside new team-mate Luis Suarez and helped guide Uruguay to the trophy.

The Statistics

Having made his professional debut in 2009, Coates’ record for Nacional is limited to just two seasons in which he notched up 54 appearances, scoring 4 goals.

His talent had already been recognised by Uruguay before his domestic debut – Coates had represented his nation at Under-17 level before going on to earn his first full cap at the Copa America in the summer. Coates found himself installed in the starting line-up following injuries to Diego Godín and Mauricio Victorino and duly seized his opportunity. Coates’ assured defensive displays at the back saw him emerge as the outstanding young player in a tournament renowned for attacking flair.

The Prospects
Liverpool’s Director of Football Damien Comolli left us in no doubt that the club rate Coates extremely highly, offering a fine synopsis of the qualities he brings…

“He’s a central defender who can play on either side, even though he’s right footed. He has a fantastic physical presence, he’s very good in the air offensively and defensively, he’s very strong in one v ones and very good at clearing things in his own box. He has the mentality of Uruguay players that everyone can see in Luis Suarez; he never gives up, always commits himself and isn’t scared of any challenge either on the ground or in the air. He also has this ability to play from the back, which is needed when you play for Liverpool Football Club.”

It seems unlikely that Coates will be given immediate opportunities. Long-term, he may have been signed as a replacement for club skipper Jamie Carragher. The Liverpool stalwart has established a strong understanding with Martin Skrtel in recent seasons and with Dan Agger currently deployed alongside Carragher, Coates clearly has to settle lower in the pecking order right now.

Comolli hinted that their new signing will be given time to settle and develop his game in England…

“We think he is the complete package. He is only 20 so there is a lot of time for improvement, and playing alongside Martin, Jamie or Daniel will help him improve fantastically.”

That would suggest that, in Fantasy terms, the prospects are limited to a handful of Carling Cup appearances although, as the season progresses, we may see Coates begin to threaten Liverpool’s established centre-back pairing for starts – particularly when Kenny Dalglish takes his men to counter sides with a strong set-piece threat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

And how will Walters be affected by Jerome/Crouch. I am annoyed enough that he missed that pen against Nor.

When Agger inevitably gets injured I'm sure he'll get a chance. But he'll start the season as 4th choice centrehalf I'd assume

If you use your wild card you are mad.
You just picked up Ronney's & Dzekos points...you'd be sitting pretty.

Stay with Silva and Young won't score like that every week.

What's the deal with Cahill from Bolton at the moment? I thought it was fairly certain that he was going to Arsenal? Paddy Power have him 10/1 to be a Arsenal player, with Tottenham odds on to sign him. I'm confused

I use a cheap defence. 60% heavy in the middle and 100% heavy up front
Downgrade the defence to give you money as 1 goal against using expensive defence and you team is screwed for the week

Silva for me. Best value and judging by the ICT so far he's going to be an essential for the season. I'd also want one of the other 4 too. Mata is too early to say I think. Walcot in an Arsenal side looking dishevelled. Leaves Nasri and Lampard - don't think Nasri and Silva is wise so...

I’m tempted to transfer Lampard -> Nasri for a 4 point hit today to join in on the ‘fun’ of transfer deadline day. Anyone agree or am I being caught up in the madness of the day?

Pros: I prefer MCY fixtures over the next 6 GWs, would catch Nasri’s price rise, frees up some cash
Cons: already have Dzeko as MCY cover, 4 point hit, Lampard nailed on to start and on pens

I watched Ashley Young home to Spurs last week and he was really wasteful. He is still inconsistent, but that may well change this year.

I'm not a Cahill fan. He scores all his goals with headers, not there is anything wrong with that.

I have Baines at 8 mil which is 900K cheaper.

Thought on which option/ Can't decide!

    A. Sessegnon to Walcott
    B. Senderos to Bosingwa
    C. Baines to Bosingwa, and Sessegnon to Young (plus a 4 point hit and 1.0 in the bank)
    D. Hilario to Schezeny, plus 1.0 in the bank.

    Leaning towards A.

no, i was just trying to show what my original team was going to look like as opposed to my WC team. If I didn't WC, I would of done one of the above options, most likely being the Walcott one.

I did Torres to Dzeko a few days ago.

    Hi guys,
I rather stupidly used my free transfer to do Torres->Aguero very quickly before Torres dropped in price, which meant i wouldn't have been able to afford Aguero....
Then Dzeko goes and scores 4!Cue price rises and a wave of trades in.....i also read in a Scout Report link that Aguero may be rested after his internationals...
Tevez isn't in the national team and will be fresh for the Wigan game.
But does anyone feel the same may apply to Dzeko, ie: Balotelli may replace Dzeko?
Just curious as i'm weighing up shipping out Aguero now, 4 point hit i know :-(!

I guess it's the Dzeko bandwagon that's caused my anxiety!
I was happy with the Aguero transfer initially, i think Man.City have 7 games in 3 weeks or something, the report was highlighting that Aguero has a game 3 days before the Wigan game, which is why i guess the Tevez speculation came in.
Plus, if i do buy Tevez...i'll have to ship him out the following week!

i cant see dzeko being rested as i think mancini's found a system he likes with a big target man in the centre and 2 nippy wide men, as apposed to last season with tevez in the centre, he wont want to disrupt dzeko's form either, but mancini may try aguero>tevez

I have a similar conundrum. Currently sitting with my 2 transfers and thinking about a 3rd or using the WC. So far, I'm keeping the WC for the next international break and thinking a 4 point hit at the end of this international break to cover possible injury.

I assume you transferred Torres out -> Dzeko/Rooney? Who else?

yes i did Torres->Aguero, i've already wildcarded last week so that luxury has gone!

He's awesome. Unfortunately they won't. Arsenal and Liverpool were offered him for £12m last January and both declined. Can't imagine why. He's versatile and very, very good. He'd cost £20m now, or best part of, as he's halway through the Russian season and he's playing well over there. However, he does want to leave and has had a lot of abuse of the fans.

    Whats your opinion?

    A) baines/walcott/dzeko/suarez
    B) bosingwa/adam/RVP/dzeko
    C) bosingwa/walcott/suarez/aguerro

I'm leaning towards B with an alternative to dzeko... maybe agbonthewhore. Additionally I know baines isn't on penalty duty any more but with this assist rule he may get a lot of assists.

Anyone? Not that there is any rush and I'll probably completely change my mind once the window closes.

Thanks for this. I've had graham since GW1 but he's not delivered so he's out of my team
