Liverpool last night confirmed the signing of Uruguayan defender Sebastian Coates on a “long-term contract” from Nacional after the towering 20 year-old completed a medical and gained his work permit.

Coates, an imposing 6ft 6in figure, arrives fresh from claiming the young player of the tournament gong at the Copa America, where he lined up alongside new team-mate Luis Suarez and helped guide Uruguay to the trophy.

The Statistics

Having made his professional debut in 2009, Coates’ record for Nacional is limited to just two seasons in which he notched up 54 appearances, scoring 4 goals.

His talent had already been recognised by Uruguay before his domestic debut – Coates had represented his nation at Under-17 level before going on to earn his first full cap at the Copa America in the summer. Coates found himself installed in the starting line-up following injuries to Diego Godín and Mauricio Victorino and duly seized his opportunity. Coates’ assured defensive displays at the back saw him emerge as the outstanding young player in a tournament renowned for attacking flair.

The Prospects
Liverpool’s Director of Football Damien Comolli left us in no doubt that the club rate Coates extremely highly, offering a fine synopsis of the qualities he brings…

“He’s a central defender who can play on either side, even though he’s right footed. He has a fantastic physical presence, he’s very good in the air offensively and defensively, he’s very strong in one v ones and very good at clearing things in his own box. He has the mentality of Uruguay players that everyone can see in Luis Suarez; he never gives up, always commits himself and isn’t scared of any challenge either on the ground or in the air. He also has this ability to play from the back, which is needed when you play for Liverpool Football Club.”

It seems unlikely that Coates will be given immediate opportunities. Long-term, he may have been signed as a replacement for club skipper Jamie Carragher. The Liverpool stalwart has established a strong understanding with Martin Skrtel in recent seasons and with Dan Agger currently deployed alongside Carragher, Coates clearly has to settle lower in the pecking order right now.

Comolli hinted that their new signing will be given time to settle and develop his game in England…

“We think he is the complete package. He is only 20 so there is a lot of time for improvement, and playing alongside Martin, Jamie or Daniel will help him improve fantastically.”

That would suggest that, in Fantasy terms, the prospects are limited to a handful of Carling Cup appearances although, as the season progresses, we may see Coates begin to threaten Liverpool’s established centre-back pairing for starts – particularly when Kenny Dalglish takes his men to counter sides with a strong set-piece threat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I've just bought in Simpson for Richards to enable Holt to Dzeko with my free transfers on Sun. Please can anyone put my mind at rest to confirm it will be Simpson and Santon as the nailed on full backs.

Santon can play either side, so it's a gamble getting either Taylor or Simpson. Try to raise some more cash and get S.Taylor?

Used my free transfers, so I'll just have to pray...

Simpson seems pretty secure defensively. I would have got in Swans Taylor but it's Arse this week while Newc could snatch a cleanie at Loftus. I think Swans Taylor will come in for Cole/Bos over the next couple of weeks as Newc and Swans rotate nicely.

STaylor is an excellent shout with bonus and GS potential. My plan is to eventually have the following back 5: Baines Kompany + Simpson NTaylor and another 4.0 to rotate, possibly De Leat or Briggs. Need to leave as much cash as poss to eventually fit in the likes of Silva/Young/Walcott/Nasri etc

    Quick yes/no for WC please:
    Current:
    Given (Ruddy)
    S.Taylor Enrique Kompany Baines (Williams)
    Y.Toure Nzogbia O’Hara (Moses) (A.Surman)
    Rooney Aguero Suarez
    [1 free transfer]

    Vs.

    WC:
    Given (VORM)
S.Taylor Enrique Kompany BOSWINGA (4m DEF)
    SILVA YOUNG JARVIS (Moses) (N.Dyer)
    Rooney DZEKO Suarez

    My main concerns=
Not having Silva (+Yaya playing deep)
Not having a c.10m midfielder to interchange (Young)
    Surman not playing for NOR
Aguero being rotated with Tevez/not getting pitch time

    Given, Vorm
    Bosingwa, Simpson, Baines, Warnock, Enrique
    Sinclair, Lampard, Brunt, Larsson, Moses
    Torres, Suarez, Fletcher

I want to save my wildcard so I'm thinking of doing:
    Lampard to Nasri
    Torres to Rooney
    Larsson out for someone...

Any suggestions? I'm willing to take an 8 point hit since I'm already miles behind rivals. I've nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Lampard has shown he is capable of collating points with his set piece and pen duties and despite being a rip off I would just hold fire - raked in the points at Sunderland last season too. Very few will own him as well. I'm benching Sess but I can see him and Larsson coming good - just need a bit of patience...

Torres to Rooney is sound. Downgrade Lamps if you can't afford this transfer.

Actually, if you just bought in Rooney and Nasri you would solve your problem of City coverage. Walcott is another viable option but I would suggest that Manc coverage is your priority.

Get rid of Lita, raise money to do so by downgrading Hart to someone 5mil. The rest is fine, more expensive defence than most but could work out.

Decent team. Bent will come back to bite people. Weak links are Zog and Lita so it would be wise to gradually downgrade Hart to Krul in order to sort them out. If you only have 1 FT then save it as there is no point getting rid of Hart at home to Wigan.

    Any Saha owners around?

It doesn't look like his price will fall again, and he said on Twitter the other day that he should be back for the Villa game. I want to swap him for Suarez eventually, but tempted to keep him for a couple of games as he has better fixtures rather than taking a 4 point hit to switch this week. What do you reckon?

Chelsea have had an offer rejected for the Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles of £7m plus Yossi Benayoun as a makeweight. The London club will continue to talk to Liverpool in the hope of making progress for Meireles, Chelsea also hope to take the left-sided player Alvaro Pereira from Porto before Wednesday's deadline. They failed with a bid of €20m (£17.7m) last week, which fell short of the €30m buy-out clause in the Uruguayan's contract, but they are encouraged by the player's desire to complete the move. Chelsea have also made a £30million move for French star Franck Ribery. But Bayern Munich will not consider a deal for less than £36m. The Blues are ready to hand him a pay deal worth £10m a year.

Pereira seems almost sown up now. I'm 50-50 on Ribery. I'm not 100% but I thought he was cup tied? But then again for Ribery, you would only be missing him for the group stages where you wouldn't need him.

Perreira seems more likely yes, don't know much about him but Youtube suggests he's good. Ribery seems far too good to be true so I doubt it, also, he has played in the CL qualifier so does that mean he can't play for us in the CL this season or just the group stages? He'd be a brilliant signing, but surely a CM is essential for us, who knows? It's all very exciting! 🙂

Right, the Bundesliga's final transfer list has been published at midday (German time). Only those players whose names have been placed on the list by their clubs are allowed to move by the end of today. As you can see, there is no Ribéry, no Papiss Demba Cissé (Freiburg) and no Patrick Helmes (Wolfsburg) on the list, so they aren't moving in this transfer window.

    http://www.bundesliga.de/media/native/autosync/55-11-12.pdf

New on the list: Per Mertesacker (Arsenal deal concluded) and Guy Demel of Hamburger SV, who is a target for Aston Villa. As a Villa fan, this makes me deeply depressed, as he's overpriced (€2 million in salary) and over the hill.
