Fulham snapped up Costa Rican sensation Bryan Ruiz from FC Twente on a four year contract before last night’s transfer deadline. The deal is thought to be in the region of £10m and represents a significant coup for Martin Jol -the twenty-six year old is a class act and should bolster the Fulham first-team significantly.

Despite some last-minute interest from the likes of Newcastle, the player admitted Jol was a major factor in his decision to sign for the Cottagers:

“I’m really happy to be joining Fulham Football Club and playing under Martin Jol who is a manager I admire from his time managing in Holland for Ajax. I chose to come to Fulham because it feels more personal than other clubs I have visit

The Statistics

Ruiz’s career began as an eighteen year old in his native country, playing 83 times and scoring 24 goals for Alajuelense, before moving to Belgian club KAA Genk. Ruiz stayed there for three seasons, bagging 26 goals in 79 games and his performances caught the eye of Steve McLaren, the then-manager of FC Twente.

McLaren snapped up the player for a mere 5m Euros in 2009 and the player’s goals repaid his manager’s faith, as he fired Twente to their first ever Eredivisie title under the guidance of the former England boss. It’s in Holland that Ruiz –nicknamed “The Weasel”- developed into a real top-class talent; 61 games brought 39 goals and 20 assists, indicating a keen eye for goal in addition to a real creative edge to his play.

The Prospects

There’s little doubt Ruiz arrives at the Cottage as a key player for Martin Jol’s side. A left-footer, he will offer Fulham options both on the wing and as a forward in the new manager’s preferred 4-4-2. Jol is desperate for a goalscorer and it may well be he sees Ruiz as a forward, someone he can play alongside Bobby Zamora; Fulham have scored just one goal in their first three Premier League games under Jol and more firepower is essential.

Alternatively, it would also give Jol the option of keeping Clint Dempsey as a forward- the American has impressed in Europe when played up front and scored the club’s late consolation at Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Ruiz is highly regarded across Europe and has many strengths to his game. He possesses a fantastic technique as well as an ability to regularly find the net and, standing at 6 foot 2, is also great in the air.

The ideal scenario for Fantasy managers is for the player to be classified as a FPL midfielder (around 7.5 or 8.0 could be expected) with Jol then opting to field him as a forward. With this type of skill in his locker, he would be a great out-of-position proposition and has the class to spark Fulham’s league campaign into life.

I've asked this before but just to clarify.

I used 3 transfers this week (2 free) and took a 4 point hit. And if I use my wildcard will the 4 point hit still get deducted?

If Ruiz is a mid I'm all over him. Apparently Stracqualarsi failed a trial at Leicester in the summer, so I don't hold great hopes for him. He's got 52 goals in 107 games I think. Wait and see on him. He'd be a gamble unless he's seriously cheap.

Stracqualursi apparently has something like 156 goals in 110 games!... in Mexico. I think Ruiz could be very good, but I think with both I'd give them a 3GW run before I'd consider them.

I would say yes, AVB wants him as his creative player. He'll play in a midfield 3 alongside Lampard and either Mikel/Ramires, more likely to be Mikel.

?? Mata on the bench? I think Mikel and Lampard are starters. Mata will either play in Mid with 3 strikers, or Ramires will come in if Mata goes in front three. I think Meireles will have a very tough time finding that many minutes. 15 games this season maybe?

Could really be anything atm. It's prob going to defo be a 4-3-3 with att full backs. But how useful will that Mid 3 be in reality? Lampard goes missing for large part of games and is best coming late into the box to pick up a goal. Mikel/Essien will be there as Def cover. So where will the Mid passing come from? I think Ramires will come out on top over Meierles for his work rate. I also think there is a lot of over hype around Sturridge. Lukaku could well feature as well. Agree Mata will most likely settle in front 3 leaving Kalou and molouda on the bench.

There were some blogs that we don't need a holding midfielder so maybe Ramires will play instead of Mikel and we'll play 4 3 3 with Lamps on the left and Raul on the right. Mata will be winger with license to come inside.

I think now the window is closed they will get more consistant in their team sheet. I think it was just baecause he was trying to play against Stoke that he shuffled them about, then had Chelsea straight after. I think in the next few weeks Surman will become a regular in the Mid.

    need a lil' help

    I have 2 free transfers and 1.0 M in a bank.

    My team is:

    Al Habsi - Given

    Kompany - Hughes - J. Enrique - Smalling - Bosingwa

    Cahill - Dempsey - N'Zogbia - Sessegnon - Moses

    Torres - Suarez - Holt

I definitely need transfers. Thinking about dropping Torres (11.9 M) and N'Zogbia (7.5 M). Then I have 20.4 M to spend (because of 19.4 M + 1 M from the bank) for midfielder and striker. Who would you recommend ?
I also consider 3 players transfer, but it would give me -4 pts, so I would only do that when really great opportunity.

    Thanks for help!

RVP already had his price down, I am not so sure that he'll fall one more time. Baines maybe, cause cash is needed for the attack and I am not convinced that Taarabt is worth 6.4m even.

On the price fall I am happy for Valencia. 7.9m get in

I agree it's quite generic, but I'm not mega worried about that. These are my main concerns:

        - I'm wondering if I should get Chelsea or Arsenal cover in midfield, or whether to wait and see how those situations play out before transferring in.

        - Not completely sold on Jarvis, Petrov, Moses, but unsure of better options for the same prices.

        - Also worried about rotation risk for Dzeko over the next few weeks.

It'll be interesting to see which side of the Eredivisie to Prem divide he falls. For every Van Nistlerooy and Suarez, we've had a Kezman. I've not seen loads of him, but he does seem good. I'm tempted to gamble on him if he is a 7.5 or less mid. He'll prob be an 8.0 forward though.

Why? Because you've seen some videos off Youtube?

He's a shadow striker, is reliant from his teammates runs. Seen from Fulham first 3 match currently they're struggling forward even to get past from their own half.

And he's pretty lightweight, not that quick. He's nowhere near Suarez level. IMO his chose the wrong league with his attributes.

I think his situation to be assessed first, not certain.

Spurs and Liverpool both did well in terms of who left as much as who came. You raise a good point though, Spurs are three bad injuries away from a very tough campaign. That much can be said of many sides though. I think the Europa league is going to see a lot of second string sides until there's a chance to win it.

I'm ambivalent towards the sale of Meireles. I did like him and he offered up something a bit different. He was a bit cowardly for my liking, but his movement around the box is superb. However, he'd become back up to our first choice mids, and with Gerrard to come back would have found his time cut further. Also, he was 'only' on 30k a week at Anfield. Sure his pay rise is huge. I think it shows the faith we have in our squad, along with the promising youngsters such as Shelvey, Sterling and Suso who can step up into those back up roles.

No. West Ham have done alright. Got Nolan, some other tidy buys. Parker was never realistically going to stay and they got an Ok prce for him. If he applies himself, Bentley could revive his career at West Ham. Or, he could continue being awful.

Can't see Bentley motivating himself even slightly in the Championship.

Quick question. If I used my wildcard on Monday, will I be okay to make as many transfers as many times as I want up until this gameweek closes?

How much do you let reckon Adebayor will be? I reckon if he is under 9.0 or under he could turn out to be bargain of season. Much like Suarez starting at 9.5.

Also do you lot reckon Dzeko will start more games over Aguero given his goalscoring exploits?

I reckon Ade will come in at 8.5 (hopefully).

Aguero will register the most starts for City this season.
