Sunderland have not had the best of starts to the league season. Despite bringing in ten new players during the summer, Steve Bruce’s side have just two points and one goal to show for their endeavours so far. The Black Cats boss therefore moved to address this yesterday by snapping up Nicklas Bendtner on a season-long loan.

Bruce is no stranger to Bendtner- he has previously taken the player on loan when in charge of Birmingham City and it was there that the big Dane had his most successful season to date. The club’s assistant boss Eric Black also worked with Bendtner at St Andrews and his statement last night certainly suggests he knows exactly how to handle a player famous for his self-belief:

We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Nicklas, who is an established Barclays Premier League player now. Nicklas had a big impact on our season at Birmingham when he arrived as a youngster and I’m sure he’ll do the same again. He’s a big, physical lad with a good touch, good movement and he’ll certainly bring something to the party.

I’m sure he’ll be looking to come here and prove to the supporters how good a player he is. He probably has more chance of playing first-team football here, and if he grasps it there’s no reason why he can’t be a top, top player.

The Stats

Born and raised in Denmark but a product of the Arsenal academy from his teenage years, Bendtner had been with Arsenal for seven years until now.

His first true action came in the 2006/07 season when Arsene Wenger loaned him out to Championship side Birmingham City for the season which started to blossom the self-belief that we know all know too well by now.

He has remained at The Emirates ever since and turned out 98 times for the Gunners in the four seasons that followed, scoring 22 goals. Mainly accustomed to being back-up to the likes of Robin Van Persie, the Great Dane made well over half of those appearances from the bench.

The Prospects

Not short on self-confidence, Bendtner will undoubtedly believe that he will be an unprecedented success while with Sunderland.

Priced rather nicely at just 6.4 (cheaper than current striker Asamoah Gyan) in the Fantasy Premier League he will provide a promising option for when Fantasy Managers want to back the Sunderland offense.

Despite all the bluster, he is a talented striker who can play with the ball at his feet as much as in the air. Inconsistency has always been an issue but with the support of the Sunderland midfield he’ll likely be dished up more than a few chances. Fantasy Managers won’t want another Burnley on our hands again.

The move certainly brings Stephane Sessegnon’s role in the Sunderland XI into question. Bruce has been playing him behind Gyan in a 4-4-1-1, but with one goal in their four games in all competitions, a move back to 4-4-2 could be in the manager’s thinking. Such a scenario would certainly dim Sessegnon’s Fantasy appeal as an out-of-position player, with the Black Cats boss playing Bendtner alongside Gyan up front as he looks to boost the Black Cats firepower.

Anyone else mildly excited / intrigued by the signing of Royston Drenthe? He was outstanding at the Euro U21 finals a few years back. Wouldn't want to be a full back trying to cover him and Baines.

So was Maceo Rigters. I'm intrigued as to whether someone who was as bad as he was at Hercules can still be classed as a footballer. If he recaptures early form he can be a beast. But he's been poor for two seasons now. Not a big risk financially, but a big risk form and contribution wise.

I'm in the minority of LFC fans who feel sorry for Everton above hating them/ wanting them to go down. With what happened with us the last few years, I can sympathise with the situation. I suppose this Stracqualursi or whatever he's called needs to be firing all cylinders....

I'd like to see Capello try something a little different tomorrow, but I doubt he will. Think it'd be good if he gave Cleverly and Carroll the nod, as well as both Downing and Young. Dread to say this, but Barry anchoring to accomodate Cleverly? No doubt he'll go in a different direction.

He's good, but not in the England squad. Or fit probably. Barry's actually looked sharp in City's first few games. I just want Capello to mix things up. Like the idea of Downing and Young playing. I still need a lot of convincing about Walcott. I can see his potential, but I just don't rate him.

I believe he is. I rate Downing as the better of those two, in an out and out provider sense. Johnson cuts inside too much. Like many wingers, needs to work on his end product. The potential is there.

Most people say that, but I really will stick up for Downing over Johnson. I feel AJ is overrated, Mancini wants shot of him after all. Until Downing came to Liverpool, I didn;t appreciate what he's capable of. That's not blind bias, it's finally seeing that I was wrong about his abilities beforehand.

Barring injury on international duty, he'll start to be the man I reckon. Chelsea apparently tried to hock Malouda last week, without success. AVB's clearly not convinced with Anelka, Kalou or Malouda. Mata should nail the spot, I reckon.

I see the statement "Baines is like an 8.0 midfielder" a lot right now, but I feel it kind of misses the point. Yes, he is worth the money, but in terms of what it does to your team, it might not be. Because in his place there are legions of valid, much cheaper options in defence, whereas the cheaper options in midfield that you have to look towards if you get Baines are less appealing.

I take your point - but not many full-backs get the privelege of both penalties and free-kicks; this has been accentuated by Arteta's departure.

His assist level is high - the worry is that there are a diminishing anmount of capable players in that Everton team who can provide the vital touch to his accurate crosses.

I am not happy with my midfield and Baines is the main culprit - I won't be able to get two midfielders above £9.0m for instance - but I'll settle for Nassri/Jarvis/Larsson for next time.

I keep saying this but people seem to ignore it. The penalties Baineon thes put away last season were when Saha wasn't playing. Forgive me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure Saha takes them when they're both playing though the only pen I can remember in recent seasons while both were on the pitch was against Man City, when Saha took it.

He's robust and pretty quick. Decent crosser, inconsistent passer but generally tidy. As a fantasy prospect I'm not sure. This is going off what he was like prior to his move to Madrid though. Last year, he was awful. Absolutely, sensationally terrible. To the point where he was practically ran out of Hercules. His attitude is a worry too. I'd steer cleer for now. And no, not a set piece taker.

Yeah, it's pretty good. You seem set on keeping Lamps, but I'd downgrade to Mata so that you can upgrade Ferguson to someone who plays. Nasri and Cleverly are rotation risks so ideally you need another mid who is reasonable. Lamps down to Mata can turn Ferguson into Jarvis or someone of similar ilk.

Not having 12.0 players is fun:

    Krul (Vorm)

Baines - Bosingwa - Brown (Simpson, N. Taylor)

Young - Silva - Walcott - Dempsey (Dyer)

    Suarez - Adebayor - Sturridge

    ...Nah.

Overwhelmingly tempted by Sturridge right now. I just wish he were classed as a midfielder. So cheap for a player likely to feature heavily for Chelsea but taking up one of those striker positions is a big ask.

Why do you say that. This malarky about big strikers is rubbish. The cheap options in midfield are trully awful in comparison with the big hitters. In the forwards this isnt true, the cheap options are just as valuable.

Very good point. But at the same time the big name strikers are more appealling than the mids at this point.

Any idea who the nailed on front 6 are for Arsenal?

When all fit I'd go with Song, Wilshere, Arteta, RVP and 2 from Gervinho, Walcott & Benayoun. Fancy a punt on Walcott, but not sure whether he will actually start games...

Looks about right and I think Walcott is pretty nailed on for now with his recent form, can't see Benayoun just coming in ahead of him right away and I'd think Gervinho is the more likely to be rotated. Theo won't start every week but most he's a good bet.

Have to say it's been hard to resist the wildcard, all these price rises and time to tinker. But I think there are quite a few uncertainties on who will start for a number of clubs, so it may benefit those of us holding back...

I don't really see the appeal of Wright-Phillips. He's a poor player playing in a poor team. If I was going to get any QPR midfielder it would be Barton I reckon. Although the Newcastle game could go either way- he'll either score 10+ points or minus points for getting sent off.

A lot of people were brilliant in pre-season.

I might be wrong, maybe QPR will be the perfect club for him because he'll be an important player for them if they're going to do well. I just never rated him that much and think there are better bets for less money- Brunt, Jarvis, Cabaye, Cleverly, Petrov, Eagles (Kakuta maybe?)... the list goes on.

Help... 2 Questions - Inaugural Post

    1) Which to believe the Nasri with 1 assist in 2400 minutes last year or 3 in the first MC game? and therefore part B of same question: Nasri or Silva?

    2) Why doesn't anyone have Begovic?

Nasri with the first 3 in MC game, and its 50/50 with Nasri vs Silva - I think it all comes down to who you like better really! and I prefer Nasri over Silva so thats how I'm choosing 😛

He had toughish fixtures at the start, looks a good choice though now
