One of the biggest surprises of last night’s transfer window was Chelsea’s late announcement that the club had agreed a deal with Liverpool for the services of Raul Meireles.

With many expecting the Luka Modric deal to happen -despite the protestations of Harry Redknapp that the Croatian would be “One million percent staying”- it became apparent as the day progressed that Tottenham were, indeed, unwilling to budge over the sale of their prized playmaker, regardless of the size of their London neighbour’s offer.

Andre Villas-Boas turned to his compatriot, therefore, and the deal, thought to be in the region of £12m, sees the Portuguese midfielder arrive at Stamford Bridge on a four-year contract.

The Stats

A product of the Boavista youth academy, Meireles’ first-team career started off with a two year loan at Portguese second division side Aves, wherein he made 42 appearances and notched just the one goal. He returned to Boavista the following season but failed to score in 29 showings.

A move to FC Porto beckoned and in six years Meireles played 138 times, scoring 15 goals and picking up, amongst other things, four league titles.

An impressive display for Portugal (47 caps, 8 goals) at the 2010 World Cup put Meireles on the radar of more scouts from across the globe but it was Liverpool who got their man for a 13 million Euro fee. This paid dividend in the second half of last year in particular, when he picked up the PFA Fans’ player of the Year award for 5 goals and 6 assists in 29 games.

The Prospects

The Meireles switch is a head-scratcher for a couple of reasons. Liverpool have decided to sell one of the most successful players of what was an otherwise tumultuous campaign and, as pointed out, while Chelsea will be happy to have signed a creative midfielder for a fee much smaller than the £40million reportedly offered for Luka Modric, this is a player that manager Andre Villas-Boas himself agreed to sell from FC Porto just 12 months ago.

Where he actually fits into things at Chelsea is also another conundrum to be solved. Frank Lampard is 33 years of age and in a slow decline but to expect him to drop out suddenly would be verging on foolish. More likely will be to see Meireles afforded, at least for now, either a wider berth in the Chelsea outfit or a first-team slot at the expense of Ramires.

One thing Chelsea have been distinctly lacking in the last few years is a creative forward drive in the middle of the park. Frank Lampard has upped his creativity so far this campaign- a look at our Members Area show the midfielder has doubled the number of goal scoring chances created per game compared to last season- and, alongside the recent signing of Juan Mata, Meireles gives Villas-Boas a further creative option in the key central area.

If given the chance in the Chelsea starting XI, not only may we finally see a glimmer of the old Fernando Torres but, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy Managers will perhaps be seeing a cost-efficient option from a top team at their disposal sooner rather than later.

I disagree, I'd say you have a very similar product in Aguero and Tevez but Dzeko is has a different style all together, which will in the end allow him more time on the pitch.

I think we will see Aguero and Tevez sub off for each other all year (depending on Champions league line ups of course).

Will score more goals throughout the year imo.
          Less risk of rotation also.

As a City fan I think Aguero just shows more strength, speed, and flair.

Dzeko's goals will rely on how well the team is performing.
Aguero is the type of player that will score regardless of how well or poor the rest of the team is playing.

I chose him as a long term option and will stick with it. Am questioning my timing now due to possible rest and rotation. Is there not the possibility that he will be the one who rotates and Dzeco is the forward who is playing closest to goal?

both are good picks - i think those 2 will get the lion's share of gametime this season, with balotelli and tevez feeding off the scraps...

agree with halnone's comment above though, aguero much more of a technical player, and likely to create his own chances. Then again Dzeko's last goal against spurs was a peach!

One of the lessons I've learned in the past is never make a hit when after the hit u'll have benching problems. I see it as rookie mistake. Sorry but watching those benched points when your first eleven are doing nothing and u've payed minus 4 for the first 11. Aaaa that is frustrating. But what is there that is. One for the future.

From your team I would bench Moses, RT and pick one of Schaw and R.J. Wait for the bookies to choose who.

Actually, she was very pleased with United's 8-2 thrashing of Arsenal.

I shamefully lumped on United -2 at 3/1 and took her out on it.

Should have told her I put it on Sp*rs losing. Rookie error.

Ooooo you have crossed a very important line there Mr Faulkner.

Never bet against your own side. They'll come around to repossess your Arsenal duvet and Tony Adams Scented Bubblebath.

Meh. Have done it before (rarely, but have)

Grew up watching my Dad, a Wrist Ham fan, betting on his team winning every week, and usually losing. Like FPL, I've learned to separate it from my loyalties.

That fact that I can often be a hopeless optimist when it comes to Arsenal normally means when I think we're going to lose, we do.

I'm seeing a lot fewer Suarez/Dzeko/Rooney RMTs recently.

Suarez and Rooney both look like they're gonna score each time their team attacks and Dzeko is in scintillating form.

I think Dzeko's possibility of being rotated and now with the budget option of Ade or the pricey option of RVP people are seeing other options.
Suarez as well hasn't got great fixtures.

It's still my strikeforce at present. Rooney and Suarez are going nowhere as long as they're fit, resolved against RVP and went for the cheaper option of Walcott until we see how their new look team looks.

Adebayor makes Dzeko MORE appealling IMO, risky to put in to start with but if he looks good and Dzeko slows down when he does play, it's an easy transfer to make.

no. gervinho, walcott and arteta would all be ahead of benayoun in their respective positions i imagine. benayoun's strength is that an injury to either of those three and benayoun can fill in with his versatility

a, adam i think has done everything right and hes place is his until he has a couple of poor games. he has proved that he will still shoot take corners and he is pur class arsenal the best i have ever saw him and im a blackpool fan. Holt looks a big hard player and will chip in with goals.

b is a risk cause i like jarvis but i dont see wolves scoring that much and there is loads of players that may shine on the day, doyle, fletcher, hunt and ohara so he may play well and go 5 games without anything. dzeko could of moved himself that high in the pecking order that rm may start bringing him off after 65-70mins for champions leagues game ect.

so a for me but id like walcott as a gamble over adam fixtures thats all 4 out of 6 at home
