QPR’s squad overhaul following the arrival of new owner Tony Fernandes continued on transfer deadline day with the acquisition of Shaun Wright-Phillips from Manchester City. The winger joins up at Loftus Road on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The Statistics

Having suffered frustration at Chelsea, the return to Man City from Chelsea in 2009 failed to hand Wright-Phillips the opportunity for regular starts that he craved.

The early signs had been encouraging – 27 starts in his first season back brought returns of 5 goals and 5 assists with 16 Fantasy Premier League bonus points. Predictably, however, his starts were cut the following season as City begun bolstering their squad with their newfound millions under Roberto Mancini – the arrival of Adam Johnson, in particular, hindered his progress. Wright-Phillips started 19 matches in 2009/10 but still managed to chip in with 4 goals and 8 assists with 10 bonus thrown in.

Last season, Wright-Phillips found himself limited to Europa Cup and FA Cup appearances and failed to make an impression. There’s no doubt that he desperately needs a run of assured starts and an injury free spell if he is ever to return to the kind of form which brought double figure goal returns in his first spell with City in the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

The Prospects

Wright-Phillips looks a good fit for Rangers. Warnock favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation in the Championship last season and the former City winger would seem well suited to a role in that system on the right flank or in a similar position in a 4-4-2. Joey Barton’s role on the arrival of Wright-Phillips is interesting – presumably he could line up in central midfield rather than find himself deployed on the right. Shaun Derry and Alejandro Faulin are well established in the holding midfield roles but presumably, Barton could take up one of these central positions with Adel Taarabt surely set for the free role behind a lone striker.

Clearly both Barton and Wright-Phillips offer Warnock several options and tactical flexibility. The knock-on effects are that the likes of Tommy Smith and Akos Buzacky now look likely to find themselves restricted to cameo roles as the new broom sweeps through Loftus Road.

In Fantasy terms, Wright-Phillips, along with Barton, will certainly come back onto the radar but Adel Taarabt is surely likely to remain the key target within the Rangers midfield. The price difference between the three midfielders is minimal with Barton currently the cheapest in the pack – Wright-Phillips is available at 6.4 in the Fantasy Premier League game following a recent price drop. Taarabt, at 6.5, still looks the most likely given his set-piece involvement and impressive goal record. Having struck the woodwork twice at Wigan, the signs indicate that returns are imminent.

Taarabt’s influence on Rangers’ attacking play may well be reduced as a result of the new arrivals but arguably the potential for stronger results, form and confidence will only help Taarabt meet the pre-season expectations of those who invested in the Moroccan. Wright-Phillips has a point to prove but whether he can outshine and outperform Taarabt in the new QPR lineup is certainly up for debate.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I would have him over Taarabt any day. The bloke is rubbish and there is a reason why Spurs let him go.

Take the weekend as an example: if arteta wasn’t on the pitch he’d have taken that penalty to add to his cleansheet and 3 baps

This is how I have ALWAYS thought about him this season whenever anyone has said his price is too high for a defender that doesnt keep lots of clean sheets, but really he gets as many if not more attacking points than most midfielders at £8m.

exactly, the top 4 teams (excl arsenal) can all score heavily, why have an £8m defender who might get a nice cross into the box

before season started, everyone went crazy for ashley cole for 7.5.

yes, he also has the occasional nice cross in the box + clean sheet possibilities.

baines is on PK and FK's too.

i think its justified if you were willing to splash out 7.5 on cashley before this.

Just been looking at the goal and assist stats for both Arteta and Benayoun - surprisingly, overall, Benayoun has the better stats by some considerable distance. May go with Yossi now instead of Arteta.. though is he certain to start I wonder?

        Arteta:
        -nailed on
        - Only bit of creativity in the Arsenal midfield
        - Will feed the balls through to RVP
        - Possibly set-pieces

        Benayoun:
        - Not nailed on
        -

I could see both played regularly, Wilshire partnering Arteta with Beny pushed forward to support RvP. But then Wenger and I seldom agree on selection - I'd not be picking a piss-poor Koscielny.

I agree. Silva is shooting a lot more than last season. Think he'll score more goals and assists will be pretty even. Very difficult to predict assists in the City side.

Silva may not even start. Massive rotation risk at City, especially with CL games coming up. If he is fit i expect Dzeko to start but less certain about the wingers.

I was experimenting with my wild card and the possible price rises.

I wanted to play my wildcard anyway. I'd debated it before GW3 as the GW2 one really messed my team up as I meddled with it.

I did this team with the thought of selling some of them back to my old players, but now I kind of like it:

    Hilario/Vorm
Bosingwa De Laet S Taylor ( Ward, Simpson)
Nasri, Silva, A Young, Jarvis ( Ferguson )
    Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko

    silva young jarvis arteta dyer

    suarez rooney dzeko

this team was made aftre WC
    what do you think???
should i downgrade my midfield (or forward) to upgrade defense? (bring in kompany or smalling or enrique)
and should i downgrade jarvis to upgrade arteta to walcot or is it ok?

Boyata/Hutton/Mata/Sturridge all unsure about game time.

Better options than Osman. I'm assuming you planning to play Surridge every week? In that case look who rotates with Long in the place of Osman. Jarvis/ohara/Hunt comes to mind.

    Anyone else thinking:

To Baines or not to Baines?

Everton’s midfield could be good value for a cheap mid option?

Is Sessegnon as good value now as he was before the arrival of a new striker?

Is Walters as good as value as he was before Stoke got two new strikers?

Is Tchoyi (something like that) looking good for WBA now as a possible Walters/Sess replacement plus 1mil in cash.

Can you afford not to get Arteta? Will he get FK’s or Penalties at Arsenal?
